Thanksgiving Day 2012 Quit Day 328


Today marks another day added to list of "first times in 35 yrs. to enjoy". Thanksgiving is and has always been a reflective holiday for me and today I give thanks for this site and ALL of the nutcases who have impacted my quit. There are so many who come to mind and more than a handful have become true friends.

I look back briefly to see the Day 1 marker I planted in my quit. No, I'm not boasting, I don't ever want to forget the absolute SUCK. I am looking forward to new chapters to write and will remain confident that I am responsible for my actions and reactions. I will no longer be a slave to a drug in a can. The light has been turned on and I now see I can live without the brain masking drug and habit addiction I selfishly clung to 35 freakin' years.


We are quickly approaching some of the most stressful times and want to encourage you guys to lean on each other when you're not "feeling the quit". Remember all of the craves that have been beaten down and use the tools you've learned here. Be ready to help, encourage or challenge another who might be struggling.

indulge me if I get nostalgic ... six years ago on NYE, I walked out of a party giving my can to the host and said "I am done". Three agonizing days later I googled 'fake dip' and landed on KTC.  I've been attending that same NYE party for the last six years and every year I would have a new coin with me.  I made it a point during the night to show it to the host and ask him if he was ready to embrace freedom.  Every year, he would tell he'd quit when he was ready......

In October he joined the site but never got involved and I was pessimistically optimistic of his success.....Last night he told me he was on day 84...

And thanks to all of you who continue to pay it forward

an update on my buddy.  Monday morning he texted me day 300!!!  I wasn't aware but later that night, our tight group of friends met up for dinner and toasted.

Not relying on the emotion of the moment/day to dictate or give me an excuse to finger bang the can.   You cannot separate Brotherhood, Accountability and Success....all three must be part or there is none.  Pretty sure its an old Chinese proverb Chewie wrote.

Coming up on 4 yrs of quit and taking stock of that time.


Last year I learned one of our brothers has been quietly battling ALS. I am not sure of the exact date he was diagnosed but know the discovery would have destroyed most quits. His steadfastness and commitment to his quit is one of the truest acts of heroism I have ever seen. I am thankful and honored to call him a brother. He is a husband, father, United States Marine and a member of The Glass House of April ‘12. All I can say is thank you Tst for continuing to raise the bar every day.

The closeness and energy that generates here is life changing. We failed so many solo attempts, but once the blinders of nicotine are removed and we face the addiction we willingly submitted to, then and only then will the battle of one day at a time become achievable. Break out of your shell and embrace everything this site has to offer.
Stay active on the site and continue to foster these 'quit relationships'.

and for this today I AM THANKFUL.

What will you do w your quit today?

I will and have posted my word.
I have interwoven that promise into many rooms.
I will assist if possible.

I will not allow the selfish minded stoppers, who are only looking for an excuse to go back into slavery, discourage or impede my quit.

Above all, I will uphold my promise to me and to this sanctitude that I will not use nicotine in any form for today.

I posted my promise today and spent the last hour posting support in other brothers groups
I too, like by March Brother Steakbomb, will text my quit brothers
If the thought of Nicotine enters my brain I will dismiss it by thinking of all my brothers and sisters fighting the same thing with me.
I will stay free today.

You know...when you first came here, I was just a fledgling quitter with a militant attitude about roll call.  April 2012 is still one my favorite groups of all times, and you guys are still rocking this shit today.  Good for you, and thank you for your leadership style.  Fuck the noise.  Put your head down and get. it. done.

Bird’s Top Ten
1 Quit for you.  This decision to abstain from ANY and ALL NICOTINE is not based on fear or for anyone else.  
2.  Post roll every damn day.  Affirm daily to yourself and to the brotherhood your decision to protect your quit and theirs.
3.  Keep you word.  Sounds simple until every hits the fan at once but if you can’t look yourself in the mirror honestly then you are a weak link.
4. Hold your brothers accountable to posting and protecting their quit  This will require open lines of communication.
5.  Have a sense of humor.  Life is serious enough and quitting sucks.  We did this to ourselves so own your quit.  
6.  Special butterflies need not apply regardless of your life story or circumstances.  Your finger print is the only unique thing about you.  Follow the time tested precepts.  You are not God’s gift to “quit” and KTC isn’t broken nor DOES IT NEED FIXING OR REINVENTING!
7.  Take what you can and leave the rest.  It’s called life – roll with the good and bad.
8.  Protect your quit daily and if you have extra energy help a brother out.  (old or new, we all need encouragement sometimes)  the pay it backward and forward principle.   Note help may include a boot in the ass every now and then or a 2x4 upside a thick foggy skull
9.  No cure, pill or silver bullet to erase our history of nicotine abuse.
10.  Wake up and repeat

I decided early in my quit that posting roll was going to be a first thing priority.  As soon as my feet hit the floor, I walked my happy ass to my office and posted roll call.  Nicotine was off the table for the day and I just needed to be a man of my word and keep my promise.  In my mind’s eye I was also putting another nail in the door that separated me from the nic bitch and I knew I could never close it 100% if I missed a day.  
I also started noticing vets posting with our group and as a way of increasing my accountability, I added a post in their rooms as well.  I posted support for them as a tribute to each of those groups/quitters who invested their time and energy in my quit and will continue to support them along with the newbs as long as I have quit in my lungs.  Our quits must be 100% our decision to start with but KTC is a brotherhood and a community.  We all failed miserably when we attempted to stop on our own.  So embrace the brotherhood and allow yourself to be held accountable.
We’re here for a purpose so what is yours?  Find a role to play here and raise the bar of accountability
