Title: New Software: Questions, Comments and Concerns
Post by: chewie on September 16, 2018, 10:21:28 AM
Welcome to the new (and improved) KTC Forums.

This is a new software for us and candidly the mod / admin team is learning it too. That said, if you've got comments / questions about the new place post them here and we'll work to get them answered.

I like the new site better than TapaTalk; however, a little pre notification of the switch would have been nice. It took me a bit to figure out what the hell happened.

I hear you. We're moving as fast as we can to get the TapaTalk experiment behind us.

No, since you asked you did not lose your header in the switch. I hope KTC leaves Tapatalk open for at least a few days as all one has to do is copy and paste the HTML code from Tapatalk to here. If you don't know HTML and need some help PM me as I am pretty bad ass at it.

We have no plans to ever delete the TapaTalk site. It will be kept for historical purposes, but no one new can register there.

Hey, it is the important things like Count to a Million, like buttons, and the (in)appropriate emojis :) that make KTC what it is!
Thanks for what you guys in the Admin roles do Chewie!

Thanks guys, this format is much better! I was able to get our header up on our roll page by copying and pasting the code from the crapa-talk site. I did the same for my own avatar, sig, and profile details.

To keep from getting booted back up one level after posting:

Profile -> Modify Profile -> Look and Layout -> check "Return to topics after posting by default."

OK, for those of you who want to jump to the first unread post...

In a section (like Pre-HOF Groups) there are a list of subjects.

Some of those subjects will have a "New" button next to the subject name, ex:

Pre-HOF November 2018 Group New

That "New" image not only tells you that there are new messages under that subject, it is actually a link that will jump you to your first unread message in the subject if you click on it.

I am looking to see if there is some way to specify as a target in the URL (for people who want to bookmark links so that they always jump to whatever is new).

I am looking to see if there is some way to specify as a target in the URL (for people who want to bookmark links so that they always jump to whatever is new).

This is weird enough that it took me a couple of iterations to realize what I was seeing.

The following is an example of the a URL that links to the last read post in a topic:

        http://forum.killthecan.org/index.php?topic=58.msg847#new

The number '58' there is the topic number.  No matter what topic number you're talking about, appending ".msg847#new" to the topic number will take you to the first unread post in the topic.

For example - the URL to come to the first post in this topic is:

        http://forum.killthecan.org/index.php?topic=25.0 (http://forum.killthecan.org/index.php?topic=25.0)

If you change the ".0" at the end of the URL to ".msg847#new", ex:

        http://forum.killthecan.org/index.php?topic=25.msg847#new (http://forum.killthecan.org/index.php?topic=25.msg847#new)

... you will have a URL that you can bookmark, and which will always take you to the first unread post in this topic.

Well, crap.  That URL trick worked yesterday, but today it's a different msgXXXX number everywhere.  Going to have to dig into this more.

On the plus side, the "New" button always seems to work.  It's just bookmarks that are hosed.

I was liking this forum better then Tapatalk but now I'm not so sure. I had went to my settings and had turned on the quick reply box because I discovered that if one hit "quote" on a roll call and that box was used all one had to do was delete the top and bottom lines of the "quote" codes, type in ones name, days quit etc. and be done in no time. But then I found that feature gone from my page. I went back to adjust my settings and it has been deleted from the options. WHY??? That was one of this forums best features.

It was posted here https://www.killthecan.org/what-the-hell-happened-to-the-forums/ and on social media yesterday.

Are you referring to "here" (on the forums) in General Discussion?

Ah right I didn't see the post.
I thought "here" as in somewhere on the new forum page.
So maybe thread in General Discussion or even better (if possible) on the Login-Page/Dialog.

What also might be a good idea is to add the info to the "Information"-Box on the tapatalk-page (the red banner on top)

We are working on migrating Words of Wisdom and some other resources.

If you have a HOF speech, and it hasn't made it over here yet, feel free to copy it from the read-only Tapatalk site : http://archive.killthecan.org

Anything else (your intro, particularly interesting posts under Wildcard, etc.) you will have to migrate yourself if you want it on the new site for some reason.

Are our posts from the old site going to be migrated to the new site, or are we supposed to retrieve it ourselves from the archived old site?

We will be migrating HOF speeches and WoW.

We have also set up all (I think) of the groups and topics, but most likely the posts for those topics will not be migrated. If there's something specific you want to bring over, we are keeping the Tapa site up in read-only format for historical purposes and for people to snag: http://archive.killthecan.org

Is there a way to follow a thread and be notified when someone post there.  Example, I want to be notified anytime someone post in quitter get together for Texas.  Thanks for all the work!

There is a button called "notify" two to the right of the reply button under posts. I believe if you click that it will notify you of new posts in that topic.

Hmm, guess I don't see that.  I am on my phone using the new default setting.  On the line I think you are talking about, I see Reply, mark as read and print.   No big deal I guess.

I liked that feature. I'll make sure it's noted!

Be interesting to hear if others can see it.  I can not.  Logged off and back on.  Not a big deal.  Thank you.

weird - on 2 different test member accounts we are able to see it in the board.  hmmm.  Can you double check your setting under profile - click "modify profile" and select notifications - make sure you can get to that menu, then come back to this board and see if you see the "notify" button right next to reply at the top and bottom of the posts?

I can see notification under my settings.  I do not see notify button here.  I sent screen shots to Samrs.  I also noticed my preview button does nothing when selected.  Thanks for the help.

I liked the who is reading and who is posting that was at the bottom of the old forum. Is this an option with SMF?

Thanks for all the work you all have put in. Slowly but surely we will get there. The most important part is we all have a place to come and post roll.

Thanks!

Archive is gone.. It seems?
Can HOV speeches or intro information be downloaded another way?

Are our posts from the old site going to be migrated to the new site, or are we supposed to retrieve it ourselves from the archived old site?

Everything was migrated to Tapatalk. That's located here: http://archive.killthecan.org/

Let me know if you're having trouble finding something specific.

Notifications were turned on for everybody.  The default was set to notify for every topic you post in.  This can be changed under profile settings (Uncheck box and save settings).  The default should NOT be to send notification for every topic you reply in.  Save some bits....

I like the new update too if we're talking about the "anchor" tags for posting roll.  One question, did that also eliminate the "modify" tag?  They, seem to be connected. Went back to modify the post and couldn't find the modify button.

Nevermind....see that it's missing here, too.  What happened to the "modify" or "update" tag?  Am I missing something?

Hmm... may just be a permission thing. Let us take a peak to see if it can be re-instated.

Where are you trying to modify?  Some sections are turned off for modify.  For the most part you should be able to modify your own post only.

Never mind, I forgot I left this out there. It has since been restored and this no longer applies. Thanks for checking anyways.

Everyone is welcome to transfer their own intro onto this forum. There is no mass transfer available, Tapa will not release any of our data...

Some have chosen to move over everything...

Some have chose to move over the highlights...

Some have moved nothing, and just started fresh...

And others have simply provided a link to their old intro, and moved forward.

Whatever you choose to do is acceptable.

This. At this point we have no plans to do any more mass migrations. If there's something you want migrated, feel free to go grab it and bring it over. http://archive.killthecan.org will be maintained in read only format for this purpose.

I usually keep my pc on(not In sleep mode) during the day so I can easily just go to it and work on schoolwork and to play video games. Is it bad for the hardware if I do this?

Nah... shouldn't be. If your comp is in sleep mode you're not making any calls to the server. Good to go.

Thx for checking.
