smiller1207- 73- I was home alone this past Monday (wife at work and I did not go back until Tuesday). First time I had a whole day to myself since I began my quit. As soon as my wife walked out the door, an intense craving hit with that little bitch of a voice inside my head..."You could just have one dip today and go right back to your quit. It would be easy to do and just not tell anybody". That fucking voice kept getting louder. I finally got on this site and read some of the heartbreaking stories. I got out my "give up" contract and read it. I went outside and just wandered around my yard (probably looked like a crazy dude to my neighbors). I didn't care. Finally, after about an hour of "intense arguing with that voice", it went away. That was day 71. It was a reminder that you might go weeks without a craving and then one day, it will hit you like a freight train. Stay vigilant. Do not give into that nicotine devil who will give you every excuse to have a dip. Stay strong my brothers!!

Any quitters here who can comment on how quitting affected their blood pressure and what the timeline was before a change in BP occurred?

This is why you stay in school, kids. What the fuck are you yammering about? Make some real sentences and get control of yourself man. If you're still dipping, which your incoherent shit seems to allude to, then just fuck off and go back to banging your cousin. We have big clanging balls here and we don't do that shit anymore.

I hope somebody comes along that can tell you. Quitting dipping helped my dickie doo stay hard, I can tell you that. All the chemicals we put in our bodies have consequences that were very unintended. With every day that you're nicotine free, your body heals itself a little more.

Lance From SD and Theo3wood randomly ran into one another at the Columbus airport! Theo had this to say, "The strangest things happen when you quit dipping. In the summer of 2008, this guy and I both found KTC, promised not to dip for a day, and here we are...running into each other in Columbus, Ohio; 7,553 days of quit between us....Theo3wood & LancefromSD. Yup."

My blood pressure went back to normal around day 50 give or take. I also cut down my coffee intake from a ridiculous amount to a half ass normal human consumption level which also seemed to help. Take it day by day and yours will come down too. Can also confirm lead in the pencil = way better.

Is there an official KTC stance on the consumption of nicotine containing vegetables/fruits such as tomatoes and eggplants?
'm1'
-
If over the course of a day I consumed 5 lbs of eggplant (conceivable), that'd be the rough equivalent of smoking a quarter of a cigarette.

Thanks Sand44- Good to know. Went to the Dr. 2 weeks after quitting expecting to see a change and it hadn't . I also love my coffee. Still drink it but i have cut down and make it a little weaker.

Nothing 'official' for sure.
The topic has come up over the years. My personal opinion is it would be ridiculous to worry about eating tomatos / eggplants ('puking') but I spose others may feel differently.

Broccoli-saurus and Gregor met for the first time and they YouTubed how to install cabinets and cut countertops and got work done. Met in Beaumont and helped a single mom get out of her Fema trailer and back into her house in time for the holidays. Epic KTC meetup. Two guys that had helped each other quit nicotine in back to back months coming together strong to help somebody else in an entirely different way! And we might of even learned something in the process! Shoutout to Rocketman who helped a bit with the finance as well. Brotherhood coming together strong to change lives!

Thanks for addressing this Chewie, haha.
I acknowledge it's kinda silly and I'm not worrying about it, but I'm fascinated by minutiae.

I dipped Skoal Fine Cut Wintergreen for 35 years. It was nothing to go through a can a day for me. Today I posted 730 days quit. First I just want to say everyone should quit right now. Cold turkey, never again for any reason. If everyone would quit, that would be great. Saying that, I am writing this so the older guys will read it. The guy who has been dipping for 20+ years. The guy who really doesn't enjoy it as much, but still does it because quitting is tough.
I am sure you are like I was when I would buy a can(s) of dip. I need to quit this stuff, I am tired of it. What a waste of money. Maybe after these cans are gone, then I will quit. You know that as soon as those can(s) were gone, you were back at the store buying more and making those same promises to yourself. I am here to tell you that it is time. Time to do what we all know is the right thing.
If you have dipped this long, then I know you have had that scare multiple times, you know the one. The one where your heart skips a beat because you think you just discovered you have mouth cancer. A new bump in your lip, white patches on your tongue. Some tickle in your throat that seems to not be getting better. These things used to worry me sick. Am I the only one that would grab the flashlight and head to the bathroom mirror and start looking for cancer? Since I have been quit, I do not think that way anymore. Will my 35 years of abusing myself with tobacco cause me issues in the future? I pray not, but I know that I did the right thing in quitting now. No regrets.
If you had the power to see the future and you knew the next dip was the one that would cause the cancer to start growing, would you take that dip? I think most of us would fight like hell and do whatever it took to keep tobacco out of our mouths. Of course we do not have that power, but we do know that at some point, enough is enough. Us 20+ year guys cant be dancing with the devil and not expect something bad to happen. You can read stories of guys with less time than that developing mouth cancer. When I was dipping, no way could I look at pictures of mouth cancer or even read about it. Since quitting, I have allowed myself to view some of these pictures and read about people going through the treatments. Let me tell you, I ain't going out that way...Hell NO. It is just gruesome to read about. You think it will be easier to quit while you are going through chemo treatments? This is real.
You are on a site that helps people quit using nicotine and reading this, so you must agree that you have had enough. Now you are trying to figure out how to do it. First thing is to know that you do not have to do it alone. Knowing that there were guys and gals here going through the exact same thing I was made this doable. I tried on my own and failed. I came here and went all in. I wanted to quit bad. You have to get yourself to that point and then do what it takes. If a vet tells you to post roll everyday, then you post roll everyday with no questions asked. If a vet says you post early in the morning, then you post early in the morning. This site has worked for many people. It will also let you down if you are not committed to being quit. No magic pills here. You have to quit for you and you have to determine that failing is not an option. When you get to that point and you leave the ego at the door, you too can quit this addiction. You can learn what it feels like to truly be free from nicotine. I have had 477 days of my adult life nicotine free and I wish I was smart enough to quit a long time ago. The freedom is so worth it.
Read everything you can on this site. Get your game plan together. Determine that no matter how bad I feel while quitting, tobacco will never be an option again. I can promise you 2 things if you decide to quit. Promise 1, this will be hard. There will be times that you will question yourself. I say this to you, nobody has ever died from quitting tobacco. You can do it! Promise 2, You will not regret quitting. It took me about 225 days or so to really feel good and not think of tobacco. It may be shorter for you or maybe longer, but when you do reach that point, you will never look back with regret. Hopefully you will reach out like I am doing here and try to help the next guy who is trying to figure out how to quit.
Let today be day 1 of your quit...

Any quitters here who can comment on how quitting affected their blood pressure and what the timeline was before a change in BP occurred?
I hope somebody comes along that can tell you. Quitting dipping helped my dickie doo stay hard, I can tell you that. All the chemicals we put in our bodies have consequences that were very unintended. With every day that you're nicotine free, your body heals itself a little more.
I have high blood pressure as well. It takes at least 3 - 4 days to start seeing a drop in your readings. Kind of like when you abstain from drinking, that will drop our BP as well. Unless you have your own BP kit you probably are not going to see it right away, but you should start feeling a change, depending on how high your BP was to begin with.

Went to the Dr. yesterday and BP had dropped significantly systolic & diastolic. However, it is still high at 144/92 I was in the 150s/100s. Need to be 120s/80s. So the question is, will I continue to see gains in this area over time. I'm at day 62

I know mine bounced around for a bit. high then low, high then low... don't remember the day count.... But now at 750 days, it has stayed low. If you are concerned, reach out to your doctor... If your Doc isn't concerned, then just roll with it for a bit.

I doubt you will seen any more gains from just eliminating nicotine, you may want to take a couple of days and restrict your sodium intake to under 2000mg/day. For my I will usually see a decrease in about 2 - 3 days. You need to have the discussion with the doctor to figure out what the best course of action will be. If you haven't already I would invest in a BP kit for home use, that way you can get a pretty good idea how things are affecting your BP. Also alcohol is going to affect your BP as well. Watching your sodium/salt intake is hard, but doable. Take a week limiting the sodium and alcohol and see what happens.
Good luck
-
Doctor didn't seem too concerned for now. Obviously the goal is to get the numbers down. Still have some weapons in the arsenal. Exercise, abstaining from alcohol, halting caffeine consumption, watching salt intake....etc. I like exercise but I've felt like shit since quitting Copenhagen. I like alcohol. I like coffee. I like salt.
I'll figure it out. I may have a sensitivity to caffeine. Some say caffeine effects on BP are acute, short lived , transitory except if the body metabolizes it very slowly. We'll see. Gonna quit coffee first. I'm gonna be a real joy to live with

I’m at Day 83. I stopped taking my two blood pressure meds for a week. I found that I’m still high 160/94. I’m back on the blood pressure meds for a few days and back down to 120/80. I will try another test down the road, but for now quitting does not seem to help with high blood pressure.

We’ll... here I am again. I quit in 2005 for 12 years. October 2017, I wasn’t really even craving, I was just in a store and bought a can. Then another... you know the story.
If you’re new in here, like me, don’t be discouraged about my fail. After that time, it wasn’t hard to stay quit. I was stupid. I can testify that 99.99% of the 12 years between quit and cave I didn’t even think about snuff. I just lived.
But here I am again. I’ve been trying to re-quit for about the past month. I’d get a few hours or a day and cave again. I was a part of a very similar forum back when I quit the first time, and it was awesome so I came back (if any of the old F-tards are still around, I was staringatthewalls).
I’m reading the posts, and I’m scared of the pain. I’m scared because I know that the can was how I dealt with pain, and now that’s gone. I’m gearing up for 1 second at a time. I just spit out my last dip. Day 1 is tomorrow.
I’m a Christian, a pastor as a matter of fact, so I’ve got my “higher power” in order, but I’m looking forward to getting to know you guys in the May 2019 group. I’m still having a bit of trouble figuring out how to navigate and find the board for my group, so any help is appreciated.

We’ll... here I am again.

Welcome 2ndTimeAround, and welcome back! Your May 19 group can be found here (https://forum.killthecan.org/index.php?topic=1015.msg252765#new) in there you will find the instructions on how to post roll there.

So I'm into day 76 of my quit and so far so good. Once passed a couple weeks I've only had a couple of brief transient craves. I've made good use of fake snuff by way of Smokey Mountain which I know has helped tremendously. However I have a problem using fake snuff in that it preserves the ritual part of dipping.
So I finished my last can of fake snuff yesterday. I hope I'm not screwing up here. Any kind of triggers and I won't have anything to reach for. I do feel it is important to not only beat the physical addiction but mental and emotional too. It is kind of like taking the training wheels off the bicycle for the first time.
Anyone else who has gone this route have any words of wisdom?

I was the same way. Early in my quit, viewed fake dip as sort of a crutch that needed to be dealt with.
But then I considered the alternative. I've often said that I'd rather chew a can of fake every day for the rest of my life than to ever throw in another dip of Kodiak. So I decided then and there that I'd chew as much fake as necessary.
And I did. All day, every day... until one day I didn't. For me, that was around the 200 day mark but there came a day where I just didn't want it or need it any more. I just didn't reach for it any longer.
My suggestion, not that you were looking for one, would be to keep using the fake as often as you need it. At day 76 you've still got some really shitty days ahead of you, even prior to hitting 100. We refer to this as 'the funk'. Day 80 - 90 can be REALLY bad for some folks. Will you need the fake? Who knows. But why take that tool out of your tool belt?
If you're a year in and you're still stuffing your face with fake then maybe you readdress it then. Or maybe you don't. But if you DO choose to tackle the 'habit' part at least you'll be far better equipped to handle it at day 365 then you are at day 76.
My two cents. Take it for what it's worth. Either way, damn proud to be quit with you today.

Thank you Chewie. Always appreciate the experience of others and the wise counsel of those before me. I'm going to play it by feel. See how it goes. Maybe I'll buy a can of fake, keep it around and not use it. Kind of like a fire extinguisher or first aid kit.

Has anyone experienced shortness of breath as a symptom of quitting? Its been 3 weeks today and I have shortness of breath off and on throughout the day. I tried working out yesterday and had to stop after a few minutes of warming up because i had a hard time catching my breath. I'm not dizzy or anything like that and I don't fee like i need to go to the ER or anything but I really want to know if this could be a symptom of withdrawals. Thanks guys
I was about a 1/2 a day but probably had a dip in 10 hours total per day for 19 years or so.

How much did you work out before? I think quitting chewing is mental retraining as much as anything else, your body and mind are struggling with the new you. Push hard with a training partner and see if you can break through, getting out of breath can be scary but also once you are used to it, less and less. And another good reminder that Nic/Chew wouldn't help this at all. QLF

I started to wean off my peppermint chewing gum around day 70. I was kind of in cruise control and my quit was going good. As soon as I dropped that oral fixation, I started to get intense craves and went into the Funk for almost 3 weeks. I think the only thing that pulled me out was excitement about nearing HOF. I agree with Chewie just focus on no nicotine.

I am on Day 401 today. I still carry a can of Smoky Mountain wintergreen in my truck, but I honestly haven't touched the stuff in forever.
Way back I used to chew the fake almost every day. Then I just started using it less and less for some unknown reason. At some point I realized that my mouth was really starting to heal from all the decades of tobacco abuse. And the less I used the fake stuff the better the inside of my mouth would feel. So, that kind of added a little extra incentive for me to not use the fake very often.
I honestly don't see anything wrong with using the fake stuff. My feeling has always been that if you truly want to quit you will find a way to quit. The fake stuff can be a very useful tool, especially early on in your quit when you are still trying to overcome the habit aspect of the nicotine delivery mechanism.

My experience with the fake dip (Smokey Mountain) mirrors kybo's post to the tee. Early on, I would use the fake stuff everyday and just thought I would use it forever. Without even trying or thinking about it, I just slowed my use of it. I usually have some available in the truck or at work, but I just dont use it. My point is, use what works right now. Worry about tomorrow when it gets here. The main thing is to be quit for good and whatever helps in that goal is an asset and not a liability. BrianG 755 days of freedom....

So I dipped for about 11 years off and on, quitting for a few weeks up to 6 months every now and then. I decided to start working out again and that made me decide to quit dipping again. I was about a week in, got drunk, bought a can took one drunk dip and one out of habit the next day before throwing it away. Now I’m two days back in and I have a pea sized bump on the back right side of my mouth. It’s sore but nothing crazy. It’s really freaking me out. Staying up at night worried. Reading too many articles worried. I’m making myself wait for two weeks from this last Monday before I go see the doctor. Did anyone else experience this?

I've had lumps before... but this far into my quit, I don't.
you are on day 2, if I am reading correctly... you may want to set an appointment with a dentist or doctor to but your mind at ease, or to find out the next steps...
quitting is the best way to avoid future scares... I pray that last dip wasn't the one to give you cancer....
I would encourage you to post your promise to stay nicotine free with the May 19 group. they are about the same distance in their quit as you.

1st time poster, but I have been dip free since Jan 4th. I chewed a can a day for 18 years and back in November I had to have a crown put into my mouth. I knew it was time to stop this nasty habit and stop being a slave to that little round can in my pocket.
I don't know if the community calls it cheating, but I got Rx for Bupropion and I went straight cold turkey. I actually bought 20 cans of the fake stuff, but to date, I have only used one can and that was the first week.
Those 1st three weeks were hell on wheels: Anixety, depression, no appetite, the FOG and waking up every morning at 4AM. At about day 28, it started to get better. I still get cravings after I eat a meal and when I am around various triggers, but they have gone from lasting a few minutes to less than 30 seconds.
Anyway, just wanted to drop and say hello and let those who are in their 1st couple of weeks know, stay the course, hold fast, it will get better.

Sounds like the same side effects that you'd have had without the drugs, but if that's what it took to keep you quit...Personally I just went with cold turkey and posting my promise every day and seems to be working so far....day 621 and I quit with you today.

The biggest thing the Rx has helped with are the cravings. Aside from after meals, I really don't have any cravings.

For the newer folks reading this.
I want to point you to a specific section of the main site - the brotherhood section. https://www.killthecan.org/about-us/brotherhood/
This, right here, is what it's all about. Whether it's getting together outside the site or interacting on the forums, the whole reason this thing 'works' is because of your brothers and sisters that are walking alongside you in this fight.
How many times did you 'try' to quit on your own before you found success here? Believe me... there's nothing special about the site itself or the software it's running on. It's the people. It's the relationships. Period, end of story.
I've been quit now for nearly 13 years. I've known quite a few folks here for more than a decade. These are some of my best friends in the world, whether I've met them face to face or not. And I'm not just talking about my 'Internet' friends. This is family.
Get involved. Make connections. WUPP is important, but it's doubly important when there's someone, or a group of someones watching your back and expecting your name to be on that line daily.
I'm proud to be quit with you today. YOU make my quit stronger.

Hopefully this isn’t too out of place here. Just needed to vent. Day 21. It feels good, bad, weird and scary all at the same time. When I am by myself or in my car, those are two huge triggers. Right now, I am both, alone and in my car waiting to go to my next place. I literally feel my heart speed up. My breathing increase. Almost as if I just had an adrenaline release but without that feeling. That feeling is more of apprehension. Anxiety. And this is the lie that I bought in to a long time ago. A dip would be perfect right now. It would alleviate all the feeling I have. It’s a LIE!! I trained myself to believe that. The nicotine played it roll too. I gave my word in roll this morning I wouldn’t do it today. As much as I THINK I would like to right now...it ain’t worth a damn. I gave my word to all of you and to myself. I won’t go back now. 21 days. I’ve never been that long. I think I wann see what 22 days feels like...........sorry for rambling....just needed to put that shit in to words.

BEEN THERE. Day 502 right here, and let me tell you... It gets a whole lot better my man. Sure, there are days where I think a dip would be cool, but nah not really. Keep pushing dude. Don't let that hoe creep up on you. She will reach that stanky little hand around your waist and whip that willie out before you realize she just gave you the chlamydia. I've seen a lot of weak-ass dudes give in to the bish whilst driving solo. It is tough, but you got this man.
I remember two weeks after I quit, I had to drive a few hours away from home for work. Brutal. But afterwards, it felt damn good knowing I did it and didn't cave. I promise you, each obstacle, especially the hard ones, once you beat them, it gets easier each time to beat them again. Cheers.

Dawgs,
Bigrick speaks truth. I too was an avid car dipper. I have an hour commute each way for work everyday. Sunflower seeds were my savior in the beginning. Now I am 404 days free and I don't use anything in the car. I sing a lot more, but I'm by myself so it doesn't matter. Copy your post and paste it in your group, see who else is having the same challenges as you. It will help build the bonds of brotherhood in your group.
Exchange digits and keep them with you at all times and just reach out to someone or everyone if you need to. PM me and I would be happy to exchange digits with you.
Proud to quit with you,
Chris

Day 4. New to the forum. Here we go. 30+ years sporadically on the tin, culminating in a sleeve of Skoal pouches per week.
Appreciate all of the posts I’ve read. So far you guys are spot on. This sucks.

I encourage you to post roll. It is a big part of what we do here. We make a promise first thing in the day to be nicotine free for the day. We've all walked this path, and we are all here to help you!!

I started my quit today. I wanted to know everyone's thoughts on nicotine gum. As i am a police officer dealing with the initial fog when quitting is going to make my job very difficult.

I'll keep it as real as possible. We are a no nicotine site. Everyone on here has quit cold turkey. By using nic gum, you are only trading the delivery method. I only approved this message so others may chime in for you.
Now here comes the part that you will not like...
You are no different than anyone of us. Your job is not "more stressful" than all of ours. There are plenty of cops, firemen, lawyers, dr's, accountants...
Grab your set of balls (if your wife doesn't own them) and post your promise with a Day 1 not to use nicotine. You have the biggest support group. Rest assured, you will not get any sympathy here talking about how stressful your life is and now is not the time to quit.

The badass above me speaketh the truth...
Nicotine replacement therapy DOES NOT WORK. That's a fact. One of my co-workers quit smoking a couple years ago and started on the gum. Now he's on a "really low dosage in a vape" (his words, not mine) that he sucks on constantly. He hasn't quit. He's changed delivery methods.
Take a couple days off if you have to. Go completely nic free, post roll, and post an intro. Solicit advice in the forum and in your intro. As Fish mentioned there are more than a few people on here that will understand your situation and be able to help.
Take your life back!

I started my quit today. I wanted to know everyone's thoughts on nicotine gum. As i am a police officer dealing with the initial fog when quitting is going to make my job very difficult.
I have a very close friend that works for a SD in one of the largest counties in the U,S. We've been friends for 26 years and have dipped together ( hunted, fished, drank whiskey, shot guns, talked shit) all that time. I went cold turkey in Nov 2018 and he has yet to quit but wants to. His response to me was " If I go without nicotine it could get real ugly on the street" LOL, and it probably would! This guy is former military and is a meat eater. At age 53 he still is a hard charger.
So the advice to take some time off is not without merit. You are in a high stress job. Mind fog is not an option. Losing your cool is not an option. Dealing with the worst of the worst public assholes is difficult on a perfect day. See if time off is an option. It is worth it.

Yep. Failing to plan is planning to fail. You know what? We have CEOs, lawyers, Cops, and even CADD technicians :D that have made it thru the suck. Don't you think a bad ass like you can too?

use the fake chew smokey mountain or baccof. It worked for me. I chewed the shit out of it for the first 4 months. Now I don't even use it.

Nicotine gum... provides your body nicotine.
This is akin to an alcoholic who's drink of choice is Jack Daniels switching to Miller Lite.
Is he quit?

Day 20 on my quit. Jogging on the treadmill helped me with the fog a little. Just had to push through the 7 to 10 days, feeling much better now. Went to the dentist yesterday & I now have clean teeth. This motivates me to stick with my quit. I really want to quit for good this time, no excuses! Anymore ideas to stay motivated would help?

An idea to stay motivated? Post roll on this web site every morning. Exchange digits with others in your quit group, and vets. My digits are yours with a PM. Here: https://forum.killthecan.org/index.php?topic=1015.0 is a link to your quit group.

Fuuuuck, day 2. I knew this would suck and I'm gonna stay strong. Just had my first crave where I let my mind actually go to the store and pick up a can. In the past, when I let me imagination wander to that point, there is nothing stopping me from getting a can. Today, I'll take 5 deep breaths and do a bunch of push ups :) I can get through this. Thanks for all the support on here.

Do not let the drug defeat you, you are strong & can overcome this. We are here for you!!

i am so tired of waking up between 4-4:30 every damn morning for the last week. It doesn’t seem to matter what day it is. I wake up and my mind is going a 100mph like I have a million things to accomplish that day. Some days I can nod back off but some (like this morning) it wasn’t going to happen. Anyone else struggling with sleep?

Josh - glad to see you posted up on roll with your June Quit group!!!
Sleep patterns are definitely screwed early in your quit. You'll have days where you can't sleep enough. You'll have days where you can't sleep at all. My best advice right now is to drink a crapload of water throughout the day, but cut it off early enough you're not up every couple of hours to pee. Exercise before bed. Literally to the point that you wear yourself out. Some guys use sleep aids, but personally I just powered through it this way. I kinda figured the sooner I found my "new normal" the better, and wanted to do it with as few extracurricular aids as possible...
The next best thing I can tell you is to do a bunch of research on the site. Read everything you can and ask questions (just like you did here) any time you're not sure whether or not what's happening is "normal". Odds are, you can blame this for pretty much everything your body is (and isn't) doing... There are a number of links in the top of your groups header that are incredibly helpful. Be sure to revisit them often so you have an idea what's coming. If nothing else, that'll get you prepped so you're not surprised. I'm copying the links here for you as well:
3. Knowing what to expect is found here (http://www.killthecan.org/yourquit/what.asp) and here (http://www.killthecan.org/yourquit/symptoms.asp).
As far as your day count goes, this is what the first link says:
Days 4 through 20 – Here comes the mind games. The nicotine is out of your system now. You will still have some physical things to deal with.
- Cravings
- Irritability
- Insomnia
- Fatigue
- Inability to Concentrate
- Headache
- Sore throat
- Constipation, gas, stomach pain
- Dry mouth
- Sore tongue and/or gums
Yep, you have this to look forward to. Your brain is rewiring itself. It isn’t used to being in an oxygen rich environment. Your body is responding in kind. Everything is a mind game now. All the cravings you have are actually due to triggers. Triggers are events where you are in a situtation you would normally dip in. Mowing the grass, playing poker online, playing golf, working on the car………you get the picture. Keep drinking water, use seeds, the fake stuff, whatever you need to keep the dip out of your mouth. Remember, oral fixation is part of our habit, something you will eventually need to break. For now though, use all the tools you have.
The good news is that it DOES get better! You CAN get through this!

Duuuude, Josh. On day 4 man going through the same thing. I've actually tried to quit a hand full of times in the last couple months and it's basically caused me to have to start over every week or so and I've been wondering why I never sleep now. It's the same story. I used to sleep so fuckin good and with all this stop start nonsense, I cant sleep past 2 or 4am on any night. Just sayin I know what your going through. Let's just keep pushing along, never go back, and imagine what great sleep we'll end up with in the future lol.

How did we let this drug take over our lives? I can see clearly now that the fog is gone!
-
How did we let this drug take over our lives? I can see clearly now that the fog is gone!
For me it happened slowly, insidiously and then completely. There were times in the 40+ years I dipped snuff, where the reality of the risk and stupidity would bubble to the surface. After a while though it became easier to just stuff those feelings. As addicts we become very talented at deception. We deceive others as well as ourselves. It becomes complicated. Physical as well as emotional / mental.
Addiction to nicotine in any form is simply evil. The tobacco companies are marketing and selling death. Their job is to make sure this drug takes over our lives. When I started dipping there were two kinds of snuff. Skoal Wintergreen and straight Copenhagen. That is it. Walk into a store now and half the wall behind the counter is dedicated to more flavors, cuts, brands than I can count.
Corporate marketing all meant to hook the next generation so they too can one day ask "How?"........if they don't die first.

Hello everyone. New to the forums but am currently 42 days quit after a 10 year habit. It’s definitely not been easy. Anxiety, panic attacks, nausea, headaches, chest pain, etc... Even went to the ER during week 2 due to the chest pains but all checked out ok. My primary dr has prescribed me Wellbutrin for the depression and anxiety but I haven’t started it yet since I hear it can increase anxiety in some. I was just curious if anyone has had issues with withdrawal symptoms coming back. After the first 3 weeks, things started getting better, but now it’s almost like week 1 all over again. Headaches, slight dizziness, nausea, etc. Only thing I don’t have from week 1 is the chest pain.
-
Had a dream last night that I put a chew in. Was upset with myself in my dream and woke up feeling depressed and disappointed. Glad it was just a dream. One day at a time. Gonna make it today 💪🏻

Day 7 and I swear the last few days have been worse than the first few. I loved to chew as much as I hated it so while the rewards feel good, I feel like I miss an old friend. I am resolved to see this thru. It's been 27 years total and probably 10 since I had a decent quit effort. Ninja dipping sucked so I feel free. Lack of focus and sleep mixed with the fog stinks. I'm a loaner and chew probably preyed on that. I'm noticing the anxiety more the last couple days. Every angle it can try I suppose. Just wanted to say thanks to this forum. As a ninja I can't really talk about it with family so you all make a huge difference for me.

This is happening in more and more places across the US.
It's just a matter of time until this is national.
Texas Senators have filed a bill that would raise the tobacco age restriction from 18 to 21 across the state.

Just about wrote a country song this week. My son got in a fender bender on Monday, the roof started leaking on Wednesday, the furnace busted Monday and the dog is sick today. Temptation is strong but I feel dedicated to this like I haven't before. No close calls yet and life is good! Hitting 10 days today feels awesome.

At what point in your quit do you stop blaming the lack of nicotine and just come to the conclusion that you are just an asshole? I am only on day 14, but i think i am starting to see that i am just a natural asshole..Just wondering....
Also, how do you keep a job when you can sit and stare at a computer for 4 hours at a time and do absolutely nothing? when will this fog go away? it comes and goes, but still. i will be jobless at this rate.

I knew I was an asshole before I quit....
You and your body are learning and developing. The nicotine is gone, but the dependence is still there. Stick with it man, it is so worth it!! And it really does get better. You will have ups and downs in this journey, over times the peaks and valleys will be less and less of an extreme.
Quit on!!

As a former ninja dipper, I can totally relate. This was the only place I could turn when I quit and I’m still here over 5 years later. Finding KTC and quitting was the best gift. I struggled just as you are and I also kept close to KTC and my new friends on here.
Keep up the fight. All the bullshit you are going through is worth it. It’s a wild ride so buckle up and hang on.

10 year dipper here and just quit tonight. I listened to a bunch of inspirational speeches from Jimmy V, Stuart Scott, Herb Brooks, etc and realized from every single one of them, chew was not needed for success. Chew is weighing down my financial goals and personal dreams and productivity. It’s a true skeleton in my closet. I really hope I can lean on this forum, have some grit, and get over the hump and quit for real. It’s amazing the death grip this substance puts on you!

first post. found this site through kickthecan. Broke my tooth a few days ago. i told my wife i wouldn't spend money on a dentist until i quit. found out the damage ($$) and it's fucking batshit crazy to keep paying to destroy my teeth(and gums, stomach, ect).
I'm literally the asshole who had to make it about the investment to the dentist to quit. not the fact that i had no problem spending $7 three times a week to help kill myself.
on day 2. this is my 2nd attempt to 'kick the can' but first with a forum like this. this fucking sucks. i genuinely didn't dis-like dipping until now. now it sucks more shit than the machines that suck shit out of port-a-potties.
cheers to all that paved the way.

Welcome, ballng.
Every day, soon after getting out of bed, we post a promise to ourselves and our quit brothers not to use nicotine in any form for the day. Then we do whatever it takes to keep that promise. We do this one day at a time. We get up the next morning and repeat. Simple, but not easy. We know it sucks. We also know it is temporary and the suckiness we must go thru is absolutely worth it. 762 days of freedom and 0 regrets for me.

on day 2. this is my 2nd attempt to 'kick the can' but first with a forum like this. this fucking sucks. i genuinely didn't dis-like dipping until now. now it sucks more shit than the machines that suck shit out of port-a-potties.
cheers to all that paved the way.
Hey ballng,
Welcome to the best decision you'll ever make for yourself.
Batdad and Zeus have hit the highlights for you. I saw you nailed your roll post (totally awesome). Now just dig in, read whatever you can about your addiction, talk to other members and get to know the guys in your quit group (exchange phone numbers with most or all of them and some vets too). Exchanging numbers is the best way to build the bonds of brotherhood as well as help keep everyone accountable (much easier to shoot someone a text to get them on roll). Having those numbers also gives you instant access to support if that monster crave happens to pop up outta nowhere.
Shoot me a pm if you want my digits.
Proud to quit with you today.

Country,
I'm not going to lie to you, it is going to be hard and it is going to suck, until it doesn't anymore. I chewed for over 30 years and was up to 3 cans a day when I quit 448 days ago. Joining my quit group and making my promise not to use any nicotine products for 24 hours is what saved me. We quit one day at a time here. We post our promise every morning, keep our word for the whole day and come back the next day and repeat the process.
We exchange phone numbers with others members so we can all help keep each other accountable. Having those phone numbers also gives you instant access to support if need it. We build bonds of brotherhood with each other that stays with us for life.
Click Here (https://forum.killthecan.org/index.php?topic=14117.1100) to be taken to your July 2019 Quit Group. Post your promise not to use nicotine for the next 24 hours and how many days quit you are today. Keep your promise. Start exchanging digits with other quitters through private message. COme back tomorrow and repeat the process.
It is a simple process that is hard to do but we do it every day, one day at a time.
Come and take back your life. Stop being a slave to dead, poisonous plant. I wish I would have quit at 22 instead of 50, I would have all of that life I could have lived as a free person instead of tied to can that ran my life.
Make the choice, jump in and live brother.

It's my second day here on the forum and I already have a little more faith in myself than I had yesterday. Its been a rough month in Afghanistan since I took that last dip. The meds the doc gave me didn't do jack and I have been living with a constant pressure in my chest since day one (you know that feeling you get when you're holding your breath and your body first starts demanding air? That pressure). Chewing sugar-free gum is about the only think that keeps my mind off it, but the temptation to ask one of my joes for a pinch had been growing rapidly over the past week. I didn't want to fail myself again so I hit the internet (when I was supposed to be working...) and found this place. Reading through the various threads and seeing the style of support offered here makes this battle seem a little less daunting. Been playing the military game the past 14 years and I think I'll respond pretty well to the tough love I see going around. I've made up my mind to become a common presence on the forum, not only in my quit group but overall because that sense of responsibility will help me keep myself accountable.
At any rate, I wanted to thank each and every member of this site for being here. Whether or not we ever interact directly, your presence is proof that this daily battle is winnable. Together, we can win the war. I'm proud to be here with you, so please help me and I will do my damndest to help you.

Caleb,
You should worry more about posting roll every damn day than socializing. You have a weak track record to date of posting your promise to remain nicotine for 24 hours. We already have plenty of other ways to socialize. I have phone numbers for over 150 other quitters. I text most of them on daily basis.
Really though, all of the talking should be done on this forum so that everyone has a chance to comment on or learn from what is being said.

It's all good, nobody has to join.
I've given out my number 100's of times, and have never had an issue... And I know many more have done more.
I get that you may be a little uncomfortable sharing information with an internet "stranger" - But over the last 835 days, many of these people have become my friends. We get together for beer. We have spent time with each others families. I hope in time, you will see the benefit of this. but in the mean time, jump on the forums. Read, get involved. I assure you, you wont regret it!

I can appreciate not wanting to give your number to 'strangers'. I was that way once too.
I'll simply offer a few counterpoints:
- Once you start interacting with people, they're no longer strangers
- Some of my best friends in the world are from these forums. These are relationships that have been forged through more than a decade of chats, discussions and brotherhood
- Some of these friends I've never met face to face. That doesn't make them any less of my friend.
- If you're worried about giving out your cell number, are you not worried about EVERYONE joining a private Discord server you posted in a public forum?
All of this doesn't really matter though.
Post roll. Stay quit. Repeat tomorrow.
Everything else is just noise.

I had small patches of leukoplakia after I quit. My dentist found them. I was in the same situation a lot of quitters seem to be in - I avoided the dentist when I was using, and got there as fast as I could after I quit.
The dentist found the leukoplakia, and told me it was probably no big deal, and we scheduled a follow-up. I don't remember if the follow-up was two weeks or a month later, but either way, the leukoplakia had disappeared, and has never shown up again. I go to the dentist every six months now.
Congrats on being 38 days quit. Head on over to our July Quit Group https://forum.killthecan.org/index.php?topic=14117.0 learn to post roll, and join the party. The support you'll get is overwhelming, and increases your chances of remaining quit.

Yea it’s driving me crazy that it’s there and won’t go away! And I’ve had every physical and mental withdrawal symptom imaginable! Been a tough road but today is another day quit!

If you haven't yet, go to a dentist and have them give you a once over. It'll do a world of good for your peace of mind.

Agreed. I was so worried about going to the dentist after I quit I was shaking in the waiting room. Got the clean bill of health and go every six months now like clockwork. Go, you will be glad you did.

Interesting that regular cigarettes are still freely legal and available. The logic confuses me...a product that enslaves and is known to cause cancer is ok to sell, but a product that enslaves and may or may not cause.cancer is illegal?

Hey NOMO,
The best thing to do is come in here, go to your October group and vent all you want there, We can take it as we know where you are coming from. Don't take it out on your family or friends as they were not the ones feeding your addiction all this time. You can also phone one of us that you have digits for as I know a few guys have sent you there digits. Have you reciprocated with yours? How can they help keep you accountable if you have not given your digits to any of them.
As I said before, my digits are yours for the asking, but I expect yours in return.
Quit on brother, and flying drones is bad ass too. I love those things.

Hey y’all, I have a question. When the fog hits my anxiety takes off, do any of you feel sometimes like you can’t take a deep breath? I’ve been to the ER twice, they said my lungs are good and so is my heart in fact I’m like the lowest chance for a heart attack there is. But it’s really frustrating, wondering if any of you experience the same. I’m about a month into my quit and I was a 2/3 can a day guy. Dipped for 9 years

Hey Auggie,
I can't speak personally to the anxiety part but here (https://www.killthecan.org/your-quit/symptoms-of-quitting-dip-chew/) is a some good information. You may have already read it.
If you want to really get the most out of this site you should join your quit group and post roll everyday with us. You would be in the September 2019 Quit Group (https://ktcforum.org/index.php?topic=14277.2370).
Go in there and post your promise to be nicotine free for 24 hours at a time, keep your promise for the day and repeat every morning.
This is a tried a true method and who knows, it may even calm your anxiety knowing you have a group of people helping keep you accountable.
Great job quitting on your own for this whole time though, that is also bad ass.
I hope to see you in the trenches.
Proud to quit with you today,
Chris

I know exactly what you're going through. I have the same experience; almost like there's a pressure in your chest keeping you from getting a full breath. I also sometimes get that feeling like your holding your breath and your body starts demanding air. I'm 120 days in and can tell you it gets better: it just takes time. It doesn't completely go away, but there are entire days now where I don't get the sensation at all. Those days are coming more frequently, but I know that there are still many days ahead and I have to be vigilant. Getting with my quit group was the best thing I could have done for myself. Holding yourself and your team accountable one day at a time will help make that anxiety bearable. I'll PM you my whatsapp and groupme handle (I'm currently deployed in Afghanistan and don't have a normal cell number right now). Feel free to reach out if you need to get that pressure off your chest for a bit.

Not sure if you’re aware but in addition to our quit forums and our social channels there’s a slew of quit talk that goes on every single day in the comments section of our site. I ran across this comment recently and I simply had to share. Tom shows a commitment to his quit that I’m not sure everyone could.
“Back in April i broke my back in 2 places. While in the hospital they also discovered i have kidney disease and my kidneys are failing thats why my bp is so high. I cannot even find a nephrologist who will see me. Besides other symptoms(not going to get into all of them) but my bp has been getting worse. It was 195/114 tonight. I have a feeling i don’t have much longer to go? The funny thing is if i really am dying using nicotine again is not an option or even a temptation. These last 4 years(will be 4 years oct 15) i am so grateful for. I hadn’t felt that good physically and mentally since i was a kid. I had forgotten what it was like to live without nicotine and i wouldn’t give that up for anything even now. Best of luck to all of You. Day 1379”
Thanks for showing us the way brother. Prayers to you for a speedy and full recovery.

In 4,771 days since I last took a dip, I've saved $23,855.
I'm not sure where that money went but I know it DIDN'T go to Big Tobacco.
And that right there is a big fat winner.

Hey Rob,
A lot of guys use Smokey Mountain, a lot of guys use Grinds, me personally, I tried Smokey Mountain but didn't really care for it so I went 100% sun flower seeds. It is really a personal preference thing and you can try out different ones and choose what works best for you. The most important thing is to make sure you read the labels and verify there is no nicotine or tobacco in the products.
Hope this helps. PM me if you want to exchange digits.

Rob - my favorite fake dip is Baccoff. Used it quite a bit earlier on in my quit. But to reiterate what Chris said, be ultra careful when looking out there for fake dips. Some plaster all over the can how it's tobacco free but it reality, it still contains nicotine. There are new products that pop up every day so be aware. Zyn for example has no tobacco but is loaded with nicotine. Stick to Smokey Mountain, Grinds, Baccoff. Those are the big ones that contain no tobacco, no nicotine.
@Chewie might be able to recommend a few other brands that you could try if none of those three are for you.

Anyone here do the mint leave or corn dips like hooch or Smokey mountain? You guys recommend those or any brands?
Hey Rob,
A lot of guys use Smokey Mountain, a lot of guys use Grinds, me personally, I tried Smokey Mountain but didn't really care for it so I went 100% sun flower seeds. It is really a personal preference thing and you can try out different ones and choose what works best for you. The most important thing is to make sure you read the labels and verify there is no nicotine or tobacco in the products.
Hope this helps. PM me if you want to exchange digits.
Chris
Rob - my favorite fake dip is Baccoff. Used it quite a bit earlier on in my quit. But to reiterate what Chris said, be ultra careful when looking out there for fake dips. There are a SLEW of great alternatives out there @Robisdone (https://ktcforum.org/index.php?action=profile;u=15186) - which one I'd suggest depends on what flavor you're looking for, what cut, etc. You can find a TON of reviews here: https://www.killthecan.org/your-quit/smokeless-alternatives/

Oh, and just to clarify (and agree with what @MNxEngineer314 (https://ktcforum.org/index.php?action=profile;u=21) said) all products that are reviewed there are 100% tobacco AND nicotine free.

Yeah I’d definitely go with something reviewed on the sight, I’m hoping to find something wintergreen or something salty lol but right now I’ve been packing mentos gum in my lip to help with the fixation

Way to go Rob! Each time you beat a trigger like this it adds to your quit - keep it up!
And for the record... if drinking makes things difficult early in your quit, stay away from the booze for a few weeks.

Controlling urges
I've learned that if you ignore the craving, it just goes away, sometimes immediately. If you take even step towards giving in or don't dismiss the thought right then, your mind takes advantage and that's when the excuse making and justifications start coming.
With that in mind, how do you guys deal with the sudden urges? I've got sunflower seeds and Grinds to keep my mouth busy. I also reward myself with food or candy. You can't quit dip and lose weight at the same time.
Another strategy is I go play with my kids, take them out somewhere or sit down in my studio with my guitar ( lead singer of a band, working on a solo album ).
I've been fortunate, it's been a pretty easy road for me the past few weeks by using lessons I learned from previous failures. Let's here from you guys.

To quote myself and a dude around here who's got a few days quit under his belt - Do something else.
It seems like a simple thing to say but it's truth. Go for a walk, bike, shit just drop and give me 20 pushups. Water and excercise are the best for getting rid of craves, followed by stuffing something else in your mouth. I did fake, beef jerky, mints, it didn't really matter. That and having a big ol sack to be held accountable from people here, your kids, your wife, whomever.
Nicotine and tobacco are always going to be there. YOU DON'T HAVE TO PUT THAT SHIT IN YOURSELF. Its a choice, do something else.

Hello -
I'm sorry if this has already been asked at some point in the past, but I've looked around and couldn't find anything related to the subject. I'm 7 days quit, which is very early in the process and HOF. Prior to quitting I had chewed probably about a can every 1 or 2 days (sometimes more) for about 20 years.
Long story short, I've been having little to no desire to do anything, and by anything, I mean everything. I feel very depressed in the mornings and most of the day, have to work through the fog, and my desire to live life is little to none. What worries me the most is I'm 35 years young and happily married, yet I find my self with little desire to even have sex. Has anyone else ever had issues with their sex life during quitting (or even while they were dipping)?
I've seen a therapist and a doctor about depression, and I just started taking lexapro for anxiety, which is probably why I dipped in the first place - to mask my anxiety/depression. Anyway, I wanted to pose this question because I'm curious if it's related to quitting or something else.
Thanks and I'm glad I found this forum.

Hey @2legit2quit (https://ktcforum.org/index.php?action=profile;u=15332) ,
Congratulations on making the best decision of your life. To answer your question about sex, yes you can definitely experience a lack of desire to have sex while dipping and more so while quitting. Your brain is so f'ed up from all the nicotine you've feeding it for the last 20 years that it doesn't know what to do with itself. It will take some time to rewire your neural pathways. In the meantime, to keep your wife happy, do what you can to perform and seek medical treatment if you need to. Be honest with your wife about what is going on with you and let her hep if she offers. (Could be fun for both of you, if you know what I mean).
Next, you should start posting roll in the November quit group (https://ktcforum.org/index.php?topic=15766.2340). We quit here one day at a time (ODAAT). To do that, we post roll call every morning in our quit groups. Posting roll consists of putting your name, day count and your promise to abstain from nicotine in any form for the next 24 hours. Then just keep your word, rinse and repeat.
Your quit group is November, becasue everyone in that group will hit HOF (Hall of Fame 100 Days Quit) during the month of November. Everyone in there is going through the same shit as you at the same time so they are a great resource to talk things over with. The vets in here have been through everything you are going through and can offer insight that other newer quitters might not think of yet.
I hope this helps and I am sure others will chime in with their own bits of wisdom as well. So, now, go post roll in November, keep your word for the rest of the day, come back here again tomorrow after you wake up, take a piss and then post roll again (WUPP). Do that every day.
Get to know your fellow quitters by exchanging phone numbers through the Private Message feature here. Those numbers will be your life line during bad craves provided you actually use them. They are also the beginning of you web of accountability and brotherhood.
Send me a PM if you would like my digits, I am always happy to oblige.
Proud to quit with you,
Chris

Try to keep yourself busy. Force yourself to do things.
Not sure what to tell you about depression other than it will likely wane at some point. Another poster said the nicotine high could have been covering up underlying depression.
What I can promise you for sure is this: In 2 years or 5 years or 10 years, a dip free version of you will be much happier than a version who decided to go back to the can. Hang tough, make a list of shit to do and keep busy.

Thanks for the responses. I actually feel a little better today. I appreciate the advice and will be checking in here each morning for roll call. I can't even remember what it's like to not dip everyday, or what my attitude is like without tobacco. I'm looking forward to experiencing things without it. I think this forum will be super helpful.

This right here stood out to me...
1) It'll take a LONG time for you to forget dipping... but it WILL happen.
2) It'll take a LONG time for you to learn to live again without dipping... but it WILL happen.
3) Getting here daily, developing relationships and posting daily WILL be super helpful.
Proud to be quit with you today!

Try exercising and being more active, it has always helped me through my problems whether nic related or not. As for the sex I had lost a bit of initiative with my girl when I quit initially but it has come back to me since then, I’m sure this will pass just like the fog if you need anyone to talk or vent to pm me or any of the guys here for our numbers

well fellas... here goes my day three... and i haven't told a soul i work with or any family... it's a private thing for me... i live alone and family all grown..
I quit ten years ago, for one year.... i don't wanna scare anybody but in that year i lost my marriage, our farm property, and i also lost a full-time government job....
I'm thinking, was it them or was it me?? Hmmm quitting again, I know it can be done.... (Just trying not to be an arse hole to everyone i care about this time)....

Hi Uncle Pat,
Here at KTC we quit One Day at a Time (ODAAT) posting our promise in our respective quit groups early each day to abstain from any form of nicotine for the next 24 hours. If you believe you can keep your word to remain nicotine free for 24 hours and you are doing this for you and you alone, then you are in the right place.
Your Quit Group is December 2019 Pre-HOF Quit Group (https://ktcforum.org/index.php?topic=15827.990). You can click that and it will take you right to it. Posting roll consists of you typing your name, day count and your promise to remain nicotine free. Find the most recent roll post, hit quote in the top right corner of the post, go to the last name under the header "New Bad Ass Quitters Post your promise here", click under the last person and type your name, day count and promise and then hit "Post" in the bottom right corner.
You can come in here and vent all you want. We can take, we've been where you are at. No reason to take it out on family, friends or co-workers, they did not do this to you, you did. Learn about your addiction in these halls, there is a wealth of knowledge and knowledge is power. Reach out to fellow quitters for support in times if need (this means exchanging phone numbers with other people on this forum and using those numbers to actually talk to people and build the bonds of brotherhood. Exchanging numbers also helps keep you and your brothers accountable as now, we can get a hold of you if you forget to post one morning.
One more thing, you didn't quit ten years ago. You had a stoppage of nicotine use for a while. Now is the time you are quitting, and your addict brain will now that you are serious too, because it will fight you all the way. You must be stronger than the addict in you. Your addict brain will come up with the best damn excuses for you to use nicotine, but that is all they are, excuses and excuses are like ass holes, everyone has one and they all stink.
So go post roll, then start getting to know your quit brothers and sisters. Exchange numbers through the Private Message feature of this forum only. If you want my digits, send me a PM ans they will be yours, but I expect your in return.

Lot of people lost a lot of things 10 years ago. Thems were hard times and it seems like we're out of the woods. Be glad you didn't lose your jaw, you didn't lose your larynx or your tongue .........the job, wife and farm can be replaced.
Follow Chris's advice. Post in your quit group and get some people other than yourself to be accountable to.

I was having a discussion with my wife and some of her friends that never chewed/smoked about the vaping crisis. I explained the problem with nic gum and vaping.
I hide chew from everyone, it was frowned upon. Sneaking chews, away from family and friends. When I couldn't chew, I had nic gum (trying to quit), in between. the nicotine flowing through my veins had to be off the charts.
Smoking; also frowned upon but also 2nd hand smoke, so people would removed themselves from work/friends/family, etc. But now, get a vape deal, you can do it anywhere discretely, there is no break, just 24/7 and that has to be hard on your body and lungs.
just thinking and sharing, stay quit!

Yep... it's getting close to epidemic status, especially amongst young folks. I've always been more of a libertarian but I'm glad we're taking action against this now.

Yep... it's getting close to epidemic status, especially amongst young folks. I've always been more of a libertarian but I'm glad we're taking action against this now.
If only similar action would have been taken against Big Tobacco back in the day before smoking / smokeless became what it did... Think of the lives that could have been saved.

Infuriating. They just hooked a new generation! Interesting chart and info on WhyQuit https://whyquit.com/joel/Joel_Index_07_Prevention.html (https://whyquit.com/joel/Joel_Index_07_Prevention.html) Just as cig use was going down, guess what took its place?
I'm all for having a national conversation about opioid addiction and the like. But nicotine kills more people than all other addictive substances combined. I'm usually a libertarian on these kinds of things too - but glad to see them moving to ban the flavored juices from kids. Most wouldn't use if it tasted like crap tobacco.

Quick story:
About 3 weeks ago I was tossing the ball around with my son. I was having one eye on him and another eye on my daughter who was messing around on the bleachers. I looked up at the wrong time and caught the ball in my mouth. ::)
Blood and a good cut inside both my lips, hurt like F. I couldn't get that top lip to heal on its own, cuz it wasn't getting air. Some additional measures taken and finally, I am back to normal with a healed mouth.
Well after some reflection from that stupid experience, I realized.... I haven't had to deal with mouth pain, sores, issues in - I can't even remember how long. Before I quit, it was a usual happening to consciously have to chew / eat spicy foods on one side of my mouth to avoid what I had been doing to myself. To brush my teeth sensitively to avoid pain... etc.
I am quit today, like 989 days before this. You start to take for granted what being free of that poison is all about. Hard to remember what things were like 3 years ago. If you are reading this, I promise you, you can do this, you can live a life with a healthier mouth.
Do not put off for tomorrow what you can do today. You can quit.

Awesome - thanks for sharing - tremendous to hear these sorts of reminders and GOOD 'side effects' of quitting.
Proud to be quit with you today!

This is a more rant then anything else but here we go. I am 6 days in to my quit and besides feeling anxious ever so often I it has been going better then I thought. The thing I am worried about is MN deer opener is coming this weekend and I am worried that I might not enjoy myself. it irritates me that nicotine is making me dread going into the woods and be left with my thoughts. being able to sit in the woods and not really focus on anything in general and just enjoy the peace and quiet made my November. I believe the ability to distract my brain for the past 6 days has helped my quit but ever so often the thought of what are you going to do if you start to feel on edge up in the stand am I going to freak out. Just need to vent that frustration.

Hey Scott - As a fellow Minnesotan and occasional deer hunter, I was super worried about sitting in my stand without a can of poison. But I can assure you, your mind is making it way worse than it will be. Sure you will get some cravings and you will be thinking about it, but you will be able to hunt successfully without dip. I would suggest bringing some hard candies or gum with you into your stand as well as maybe some fake dip like Smokey Mountain, Grinds or Baccoff.
And as always, make that promise early every damn day and honor your word 24 hours at a time. I hope you get a big one! 'remshot'

So much all of the above. We only thought nicotine helped. You can do anything without nicotine that you used to "need" nicotine for. It's all mental as far as that goes. Thousand of KTC quitters who are also hunters that had the exact same fears. You can lower through it, just be prepared with seeds, fake, gum, or whatever does it for you

Guys, where the hell is the place to just post stuff?
Also, doesn't the idea of using fake dip just seem completely weak? Don't get me wrong, I'm using it right now but I feel like I need to quickly get rid of it and just deal with it without it.

You're in the right place to just 'post stuff'.
You can always take discussion to your home group as well, and here's hundreds of topics available in the WILDCARD.
As for fake dip - it's a tool. A damn powerful tool in my opinion. I used it daily for a good 220+ days or so into my quit. All day, every day until one day I just didn't need it any more. I can tell you beyond a shadow of a doubt that if not for fake dip I'd not be quit today.
That said, for some, it's 'too close' to the real thing and actually leads them back to the can. You need to be your own judge.
For me, it's another tool in a quitters toolbelt that should be used judiciously.

Get off the fake stuff. Abandon everything related to oral fixation and nicotine. After a week, it’ll be ten times easier. Worked for me. But as chewie mentioned, you’re the judge.

First off thank you @chewie (https://ktcforum.org/index.php?action=profile;u=1). And to @Hunter4life (https://ktcforum.org/index.php?action=profile;u=15792) would you say don't chew gum either? Been thinking about the topic lately past few days myself, and admittedly I've always found chewing gum helpful when it comes to concentration.

I still chew gum here and there. (Not even daily.) I just choose not to replace oral fixation.

As long as you're not talking about nicotine gum then I'd say chew away! I'd also put sunflower seeds, beef jerky, etc. in that same camp.

New to the site, so forgive me if I’m doing this wrong. Hoping someone can relieve me of some of the stress I’m going thru. Quit dipping on Nov 9th, 2019 cold turkey. It seemed like over night I had a itchy feeling at the back of my throat, also a sore throat, tongue feels funny, a tugging sensation to my right ear. None of these symptoms before quitting. Had a physical done 2 days later. Bloodwork is good, ultrasound of jaw, neck and throat are clear. Is this normal, and if so how long does this last?

Welcome @Tcisneros (https://ktcforum.org/index.php?action=profile;u=16109) ,
First off, Total Bad Ass going 12 days nicotine free on your own.
The symptoms you are experiencing are normal when quitting dip. This is part of what we call "The Suck" and usually lasts 2 to 4 weeks depending on the person. You've already been to the doc, so you know nothing is wrong with you, you just have to endure and stay strong.
Here we quit one day at a time, we post our promise to abstain from nicotine 24 hours at a time. This is done in monthly quit groups. Your quit group would be the February 2020 Pre-HOF Quit Group (https://ktcforum.org/index.php?topic=15988.1750). You can click that link and it will take you to it.
February is when everyone in that group will reach 100 days quit. We celebrate the entire month welcoming each member of the month on to the Hall Of Fame (HOF) Train.
This site is built on Accountability and Brotherhood. Being held accountable to make and keep your promise everyday and holding others accountable to so the same. The brotherhood comes with the interaction between you and your group mates and veterans of the site.
The process is very simple:
1. Wake Up
2. Piss
3. Post your promise for the day
4. Keep your word
5. Repeat Daily
Posting your promise each day is the price of admission to this forum. I will see you in February.

Thanks Chris. It’s been tough. Even though the Doctor and Dentist gave me good news, the symptoms are stressful, thinking they missed something.

They are usually pretty good at finding stuff. Be thankful they did not find anything and know that these symptoms will pass and everyday will get a little bit better.
-
Chris , Did you or anyone else here go thru similar symptoms. The weird thing about my symptoms are when I wake up they are not there. It’s not until 4 or 5 hours later that they start.

Check out this page from the main site: https://www.killthecan.org/your-quit/what-to-expect-when-you-quit-dipping/ (https://www.killthecan.org/your-quit/what-to-expect-when-you-quit-dipping/)
It will tell you what to expect when quitting.
I personally never had the symptoms you have. But others have and hopefully they will come and chime in with their experiences.
-
I read the information you recommended. Very informative. I tell you, the mind is a funny thing. I am thinking of all kind of crazy crap. I woke up this morning at 3:30, which is becoming normal since I quit. I was thinking what if my dentist missed something during my cancer screening with the ultraviolet light they use. Then I remembered that you said, they know what they are doing.
-
13days and still here. Today was a tough one. Headache, felt a little anxious. At one point my chest felt a little weird. Throat, tongue, and gums are still a little irritated. I’m pretty tired, no getting good sleep. Just venting here. Will post roll in the morning.

Yep. Very common symptoms. They suck, but we tell everyone to embrace the suck. That suckiness is just weakness leaving the body. You will come out stronger on the other side. Meanwhile, vent away and keep making and honoring that promise not to use nicotine today.
-
Gotta tell you. The suck really sucks. At the mall today with the family when it hit me. I felt my breathing increase, started to feel nauseous, muscles around my throat started twitching. Freaked me out. Finally got outside to fresh air. Made a difference. Took Tylenol pm to get some rest tonight. Will post in the morning. Let you guys know how I feel.

One more thing before I call it a night. Someone needs to explain this troat pain. When I went to the Dr. and the Dentist, they did not see any redness or irritation that would cause a sore throat. Most of the day today, it didn’t bother me or I wasn’t paying much attention. Then it began to slightly bother me. Can anyone explain.

Buddy I'm going to go ahead and tell you right now (masters in healthcare and going to MD school in 3 months) that what you are experiencing with the mall panic attacks and the obsessing over physical symptoms and pains of your body and making them worse is 99% chance ANXIETY and that is all. Especially if you got checked out and it was fine. And it is COMPLETELY NORMAL to experience the hell out of it when you lose your coping mechanism called nicotine. Recognize it is anxiety and it CANT hurt you at all, and you aren't any weaker of a badass for getting it. And as soon as you start recognizing it for what it is then you will no longer be afraid of it. Anxiety never killed anyone, the symptoms always pass. You got this and keep posting daily! You're doing great. (PS I USED TO GET EXTREME ANXIETY when I quit my tobacco the 1st time and I remember it well, and yes I said the first time. Dont get complacent and fail with the "I can have one dip" mentality years later)

Hey BigSmoove,
Total Bad Ass going 45 days on your own. Heart palpitations can most definitely be associated with nicotine withdrawals. They usually only last 3-4 weeks. I'm sure yours are nothing to worry about, but you should still have it checked by a physician nonetheless.
If you would like to get support for quitting nicotine, you should join the January 2020 Pre-HOF Quit Group (https://ktcforum.org/index.php?topic=15899.5700). There you will post your promise to remain nicotine free each day, keep that promise throughout the day and come back to repeat the process every day. You will also be able to get to know your fellow quitters in that month and others, building the bonds of brotherhood as you all hold each other accountable.

Has anyone tried Jake's CBD pouches?
Haven't tried the Jake's versions, but I have tried the Teaza variety CBD Plus: https://www.killthecan.org/cbd-plus-herbal-pouches-review/
The folks from Jake's told me the CBD pouches taste identical to their regular chews. https://www.killthecan.org/now-available-jakes-mint-chew-cbd-straight-mint-pouches/

Thanks Chewie. I might try both and see what works. IMO that’s a good combination to help ease the anxiety

@BigSmoove77 (https://ktcforum.org/index.php?action=profile;u=16167) I had "heart flutters" for years. Never associated then with quitting...but now I associate then with nicotine. I used to take a Rx for them. Now they are completely gone. I believe they subsided around a year ago...maybe a bit longer. I am 1709 days quit, so that would be about 3 to 4 years quit.

Hello brothers and sisters. Day 27 for me today. Over the past couple of days, been feeling a little punch drunk. The fog i guess. Not sleeping well. Tongue and gums still a little irritated. Little red dot appeared on the inside of my cheek. Just venting here.

Keep venting and keep quitting. Rest assured that what you're going through is completely normal. The fog lingers. Your mouth will continue to heal. The chemical composition of your mouth is changing so it is very common to get new sores after you quit. That said, we always recommend you make an appointment with a dentist and tell them you quit dip. They'll give it a good look-over. An all clear from a dentist is a beautiful and peaceful thing.

Day 88... Never thought I would stay quit for this long.
I usually never post on here. Whenever I started having a crave I would just read all the discussions and blogs, and by the time I finished, I no longer had the crave.
Day 88, and I am starting to have more craves than I had at the beginning. It is not even something from any triggers I used to have. I read something about the Funk, and I guess this is it.
Any tips on getting through this more easily. I know I won't cave, but it would be nice to be able to battle this with more ammunition on my side.
I am sure this has been said MANY times before, but if I could go back in time to when I had my first pinch, I would choke slam myself to not do it. Going through all this has been horrible, and I am never going to go through it again.
12 more days until my HOF, and then my sights are set for a year. FUCK you grizzly, I am never coming back to you.

Yeah, post roll in the January group. Seriously. Even after you hit HOF, there will be craves that come out of nowhere and hit you smack between the eyes. Posting roll acts as an additional barrier against those craves.

Hey KillGrizz,
Way to go on making it 88 days on your own. You are correct in that you are currently going through the Pre-HOF funk. It will pass. The only thing I can say to you is to join the January 2020 Group (https://ktcforum.org/index.php?topic=15899.7850) like RDB said and get some of that brotherhood and accountability. They are all going through the same things as you at the same time. The other thing I would suggest is NOT looking forward to different milestones. We can't control what is going to happen tomorrow, next week, next year. All we can control is right now, today. That is why we preach One Day at a Time (ODAAT) here. We quit for today and today only, tomorrow we come back and quit again.

One thing that helped me was to understand some of the science behind the Funk and what happens to the body as it goes through a chemical withdrawals. Your brain is remapping its neural connections, you created seemingly insignificant memories that involved x,y,z, and dip – so as those memories are accessed (even only for a nanosecond for you conscious mind to flag them as irrelevant) you brain recalls the dip / nicotine portion of the memory.
The article below if geared towards smokers, but it’s still about nicotine addiction. https://www.verywellmind.com/craving-cigarettes-3-months-after-quitting-what-to-do-2824897
As the article stats the 3 month mark is hard, which I assume is the reason HOF is a big milestone for us.
One tip I got was to always stay hydrated, and if I was having a bad day or stuck in a fog I would drink a whole bottle of water or green tea (the key was at least 24 oz) This helped in two ways one my body got kick start because I was probably not hydrated and two with an hour or so my mind would use its background thinking to gauge my need to go to the bathroom - which would also result in the need to walk around a bit.

"Tobacco 21" has been signed into law, beginning Summer 2020 the minimum age to buy the poison will be raised.

Laws only help those who are willing to follow them. A nicotine addict that becomes addicted before age 21 will still find ways to feed their addiction. I don't know that raising the age will do anything to prevent new users since most statistics indicate kids try some nicotine products way before they turn 21.
On the flip side, for someone like me that tried nicotine for the first time when I was 19, maybe this law would have prevented me from continuing use shortly thereafter.
It's nice to see them trying and it might help a few, but more work needs to be done getting rid of the candy flavored products and the efforts to appeal to kids.
