Hello,
With a little help from Google, I found this great site.
I chewed for almost 20 years. My habit recently got to nearly a can a day, and finally enough of the stars aligned that I found the will to quit.
My wife was on my case to quit, I'd just turned 35, my mouth was so raw I could barely feel the dip, I had ran out of chew, and just saw a new kind of gum.
I'd quit last Thursday, bummed a dip off a co-worker on Friday and have been chewing the gum since Saturday. I've got a solid 4 days now, and I hope this site helps me stick with it.
Thanks to all.
Joe

This site WILL help you and WILL save your life, my friend!! You are now surrounded by brothers that are all here to help you and will do whatever it takes to keep that shit out of your mouth. Remember no matter how much it may suck, you have many, many people here with you who understand and will reach out to you as soon as you're ready for it, once you join here you are family for life!!
Read as much as you can, drink water, post roll and chat with others on here, get phone numbers to call for when the going gets rough and you can accomplish this and kick the nic bitch to the curb!!! head over to March 2008 group, that's your home group!!!

Welcome to the site. Head on over to March 08 group, post roll, and introduce yourself to the others over there. They are all at around the same point in the quit as you are.
I'm not sure what the new gum on the market is, but if it's nic replacement, make sure you stick to the program. Ultimately, a bunch of us on the board believe that cold turkey is the recipe for success. Nicotine is the enemy and using replacement therapy is just prolonging the enevitable of nic withdrawal.
If you really need something to distract you from the withdrawals, Hootch snuff is non-nic and has helped some. If you don't like that give Smokey Mountain Chew a shot. Just so long as it doesn't lead you back to the real thing!
Ask questions, ask for help. Let us know what you need to stay quit. Everyone on this board is a living breathing testament to the fact it can be done!

11X4,
Thanks for the words.
Regarding Nic replacement, it seems to be working so far. I know I'll have to get off that too.
I guess my plan was use that for a week or two then go cold turkey on the gum. Is that generally a bad plan?

Any plan that you will stick to is a good plan. Make it a week or make it 2 weeks. But the nic bitch is going to mess with your head if your plan is the least bit wishy washy and 2 will be 3 and so on. Eventually you may rationalize that seeing as you are using the gum anyway, just one won't hurt.
In the end, the best road to travel in your path to quit is accountability. That's what posting roll is. Post roll 1st thing in the morning and that is your word to us and, more importantly, to yourself that you will not use tobacco in any form for that day only. Then do it again tomorrow. The catch is that you have to be good to your word for it to work. I am not going to tell you that is a smooth road, but it does lead to success!
Have you seen the "What to expect" section of killthecan.org yet? (http://www.killthecan.org/yourquit/what.asp) There is some good reading in there to make you aware that what you are feeling is completely normal.

loot would simply ask "why"
why would you want to do that? think about it, whether you go from lots and lots of nic to none...or from little to none...there is still a point of cessation no?
weening won't do shit for you but give you the opportunity to make up an excuse as to "why" now is not a good time to quit.
if you are going to jump....don't walk up to the ledge and stare over....walk up to the ledge and jump off the sumbitch
the longer you stare at it, the more time you have to convince yourself that jumping aint such a good idea

Hey Joe, I tried the gum too, All I got from it was a bad case of hicups, then I was right back to dipping, double the nic. The best way I think is just stop the madness, toss the cans, toss the gum, anything with nicotine, just stop. For this program to work, you need to post roll, and you can't as long as you are using any kind of nicotine. Hope to see you in roll call tomorrow.
