Hi. Martin here. 31 years old. Dipping for about 8 years, but my usage seems to have really increased over the last 1 or 2. Enough is enough.
Have never tried to quit seriously before. Once a few years back I had to go about 2 days without dipping because I busted my lip open and had stitches. It didn't seem that bad, but maybe that was because I knew I would have a dip as soon as the swelling went down a bit 'Crazy'
Today I'm done. I know it won't be easy, so that's why I joined the forum. I know the hardest part (aside from the whole torture of quitting thing :P ) will be dealing with the oral fixation. I'm going out to buy some gum right now, and am looking into dip alternatives, in case I need something like that to overcome the urges.
Here I go...

I am on day three myself. The guys on this site are very helpful and hold you to your own. I went from a two can a day dipper to none and it will stay that way. It sucks the first two days but I am definitely noticing it decrease as of now. Good luck and stay vigiliant!

Read this: index.php?showforum=13 (http://forum.killthecan.org/index.php?showforum=13)
You may not know this because you have never quit but you may experience some withdrawal due to the addictive nature of nicotine. May I suggest you post roll? It will will help. I never miss a day. Let's get this done.

Welcome jbags. Give a shout if we can help in any way. If you haven't already, be sure to post your day 1 in the October quit group. Go to the WELCOME CENTER link above and read the hows and whys of posting roll.
PS- Is Donruss still making cards?

Jbags,
Good Choice Today!
Make that choice each morning by posting ROLL--make your promise--one day at a time!
The way I look at, we nicotine addicts (Yes you are an ADDICT too) have two choices each day:
#1 Quit and Live Free
#2 Use and Die
I don't know about you, but the choice is easy--you made the right choice today. We are behind you!
PM if you need anything!
-
Whatever it takes to keep it out of your face. You can do this!

I'm using Altoids - 3 of 'em fit in my lip give me that dip "feel." They last about an hour and are helping control the need to have something in my mouth.
I'm glad to be quitting with you!

Day two started. Roll posted.
Day 1 was OK. Night 1 was rough.
I think I (half) slept off and on from about 2am - 6am. That rest should serve me well for the fog that everyone says is coming and I can feel seeping in already.
Picked up some Smokey Mountain alterna-snuff this morning. Have one in right now to get through the morning craving. It actually is helping a lot. Problem is, it feels TOO much like real dip. Even though it's all herbal, does this shit hurt your gums too?
Staying strong. 'Finger' NIC

Trouble sleeping was my biggest problem. Through the first few days I was totally in a fog too, couldn't get anything done at work, and just wanted to sit there staring at the computer screen. If that's where you are, welcome to the club...and welcome to the suck.
If you get stuck in that fog, take some time to read the information posted here. There have been literally hundreds, if not thousands, who have gone before you and documented their quit. Great stuff.
Keep posting roll with your group, ping some of the guys here if you need a little kick in the ass, and just quit for today. Glad to be here with you.

1 1/2 days in. Sad that I'm counting half days?
Sitting in this CLE, chomping on gum, reading through a bunch of old posts and HOF speeches on my phone. One more hour and I can leave here and go workout and hopefully stop thinking about dip for a bit. Hope sleep comes easier tonight. Body is feeling tired.

Take it minute by minute if you need to. The cravings get shorter and further apart the longer you are quit...drink a lot of water and piss that nicotine out brother.

Good call on the working out. Exercise, water, and sunflower seeds got me through the first 2 weeks. Everytime I get a crave I do some sort of exercise. Even if it is only climbing the stairs at work or walking around the building, it seems to help. Workout hard after work and you should get some sleep tonight. Stay strong man. It does get better. I promise. Let me know if I can do anything for you.

Day 6 and still quit.
The withdrawals have subsided for the most part. Days 4 and 5 were definitely better than Days 2 and 3 anyway...
Using some fake dip to get me through the cravings. It's helping.
Played an entire round of golf + 19th hole yesterday without any dip, real or fake. May not sound like a big thing, but I fucking felt great about it.
My sleep patterns are still all messed up though. I seem to be waking up way too early every morning and not getting enough sleep. Woke at 3:30am today. 4:30 am yesterday. Might be because I'm trying to go to bed earlier to avoid the cravings that come with being awake at midnight, wife in bed, alone, etc. But fuck it, I'll take that over the alternative.
Sometimes I look at my wife and say aloud "I fucking quit dipping, how awesome is that?" She's been great. I've been an irritable asshole at times, but she's put up with it. Not sure how much longer I can keep getting away with the "quitting = I'm allowed to be an asshole" excuse though.
Happy 4th everyone.

That's an awesome report JBags. Keep up the good work! I totally know what you mean about playing a round of golf without dip. I played a couple times this last week and it was a big step for me to play without any. The other thing that I did without dip for the first time in awhile was yard work. But, it turns out, you actually can do things without dip!
Congrats on your first (almost) week. As TCope told me, now just add another week on top of that week and so on...
-
JBags,
Everything you describe is right on schedule. You are doing GREAT!
What has helped me with my craves when they hit (by the way the craves get weaker as the days mount up) is to focus on the TRUTH and the POSITIVE in my life. The nicotine will LIE to you--you combat that with the TRUTH. Just remember life with nicotine is ten times better!
Have a Happy Independence Day!

Please tell me this is a typo.
Jbags,
Great job on your first week. The weird sleep patterns slowly get back to normal; I'm at day 13 and I've slept fine for the past few nights. Stay strong, keep your plan, and kick the bitch to the curb. You've got hundreds of brothers and sisters to call on if you need to.
As a former Commanding Officer of mine once said; Kick ass and press on...

Day 38 and the quit keeps rollin. A bump for a quick story from today.
Played some golf today. In fact, been playing a shitload for the past 38 days. My NIC addiction has been replaced by an addiction to those little white balls and long shafts....
Was searching in my golf bag for a dry glove to use, and deep in the depths of a pocket I rarely use (you know where this is going), I found an old can of Skoal. It must've survived my initial purge and dump 38 days ago, simply because I forgot it was there.
When my mind processed what I saw, I snatched my hand away like I'd just been electrocuted. It was so weird seeing this thing that was such a big part of my past life, but is such a strange looking foreign object nowadays. Stood there for a second, grinned, thought to myself "shit, just when you think your quit is going too easy...."
It wasn't even a choice. Threw the can as far as I could into the woods - didn't even wait for the next trash can (got good distance on the throw too). I'm not normally a litterbug, but I was pissed at the NIC bitch trying to sneak up on me, and she deserved to be tossed like garbage.

I'm glad seeing boobs doesn't trigger taking a dip.
the other day, my buddy texted me while he was on the tee and about one of his playing partner was tteeing off with a cigar in his mouth. All I could think is how I was glad I wasnt around someone smoking a turd while I am quitting nicotine.
Dipping was always a huge part of golf for me too.
