I found this site last year and thought about quitting. Instead i've dipped this whole past year and have not quit. I've come to a crisis now as my urge to quit is at its strongest to date. Im very tired of sore throats, bad breath, horrible gums, stained teeth etc. I started dipping 2 years ago at the age of 17 not knowing just how addictive this drug really is. I've thrown cans away and quit for half a day.. then just went and bought another can!!! I guess I would just like to know... what does it feel like to be off dip and how great is the feeling?? I cant even remember what it feels like not to be a slave to the can! So anybody out there, Just tell me how awesome it is and the benefits you noticed right after quitting. Need further motivation sadly, I guess i'm that addicted! Thank you

You feel physically better. More importantly, you feel free. It is hard to quit. It is worth the fight.
We quit 1 day at a time by posting roll.
This is why we post roll. index.php?showtopic=120 (http://forum.killthecan.org/index.php?showtopic=120)
This is how we post roll. index.php?showtopic=50 (http://forum.killthecan.org/index.php?showtopic=50)
This is where we post roll. index.php?showtopic=5270 (http://forum.killthecan.org/index.php?showtopic=5270)
You should join us. Slavery sucks.

2 years huh??? It took me 24 years! Dont be a dumbass like me! It only gets harder with time. Quit now! Not tomorrow...Not next week...Right Fucking NOW! Who knows which dip you take will be the one that kills you DEAD! I consider myself extremely lucky that I am not worse off than I am. You might not be so lucky.

Come on in, canslave. You can quit with me! Nic is a pain in the ass... but believe me... you can do ANYTHING you set your mind too. I'm going on 3 days and I'm determined, buddy. QUIT WITH US!

I'm yet another long-term dumbass. 19 years for me. Been quit 387 days, and life is great. Motivators/benefits:
1. Not going nuts everytime a small bump appears on your gum.
2. Not having to take the top off a rotten spit bottle that's been under my truck seat for 2 weeks and press the rank thing to my lip because I'm about to drown. Just damn. That should be enough right there.
3. I can actually taste food again.
4. No more heartburn.
5. More energy (this may take a few days).
6. Actually enjoy the smell of a beautiful female because it's not overpowered by wintergreen and my funky breat.
7. The satisfaction of others knowing you're badass enough to quit. Still got some friends that haven't quit... and they respect the victory.
8. Changes in sex drive. Yes, that's right. This was a huge surprise to me (and my wife :o ).
These are just my big ones, but there is actually a list of the top 100 on this site somewhere. I challenge you to find it. It's hilarious and sad at the same time.

I started dipping when I was 9 years old and dipped for 38 years. I quit 37 days ago. I never knew how great life could be without dip. Dip was my life for 38 years. Not quitting sooner is the second most regrettable thing in my life. Trying dip in the first place is the most regrettable thing in my life.
Need motivation, hereÂ’s mine: 37 days ago a buddy of mine who dipped for 25 years called to tell me he has stomach cancer. HeÂ’s now had 3 operations and started chemo. HeÂ’s lost 40 lbs and turned totally gray. No one can recognize him. He is getting the best treatment in the world but he is dying a painful, gross, miserable death. His wife and two kids get to watch. The bright side is Doc told him he has a 4% chance of living 5 years.
Please, please, please do not look back after another year, or two, or ten and say “I wish I had when I knew I should.” Eliminate dip from your life today!

Quit now, the longer you wait the harder. Im 63 days in and it sucks. Im ill all the time and crave like a bitch. What are my positives to quitting? The biggest reason is im not going to die from putting shit in my mouth. Below that would be my kids are not old enough to understand me dipping, so therefore they will not grow up seeing me dip and think its ok for them to put shit in their mouths. Ill be alive hopefully a little longer to be their daddy and again will not die from putting shit in my mouth. Im no longer wwasting $150 a month to put shit in my mouth.
Do I feel better, not yet. I damn sure don't feel awesome. The outcomes noted above will be awesome, but quitting sucks. If it were easy, you wouldn't see an ass getting ripped nearly everyday on this site for caving. Man up, quit being a pussy and quit. Why does everything have to be awesome these days? Unless you are ghey, you might have kids one day too. How awesome do you think it will be when your son looks up at you and thinks its cool to spit cause that's what daddy does? It made me feel like a prick. Don't be a prick like me, quit before you even have kids.
Sorry if I seem like an ass, but its been a shitty day. All day I've thought just one more dip everynow and then would be ok, but im an addict and that's bullshit. That next one could kill me and then the awesome outcome of my quit would never happen.
You want awesome? Go read the Kern story and look at the cancer pics and think to yourself how awesome it is that you aren't those guys. Go post roll and make a promise, that would be awesome. Hanging around wanting to hear how awesome quitting is from abunch of craving addicts, is not awesome. It sucks, but its something everyone here for one reason or another must go through? What's your reason? Go post roll and take it one day at a time.
-
I know I might be one of the younger quitters here and i guess i've been saying things to myself such as " you can do this 10 moreyears and then quit. Enjoy it while your young". Obviously thats bullshit, especially hearing from some of u older guys who it sounds like, wished they quit a lonnng time ago. This is making me think differently on that so i appreciate it. As far as looking for ther benefits of quitting, not dying early is one of the obvious ones.. I guess i just want to know what its like on the other side. Thanks for some of the answers very helpful. Dip is on the rise for people that are 19 or around that age. I don't know really why. I started because i thought it looked cool and macho. Also i have a bit of depression, and in my mind ii feel like it makes things better for a short period of time.WRONG! i'm sure it just makes things worse! I will be posting roll 2morrow! Addiction can only make depression worse!
-
Fuck tomorrow, go post roll right now. That dip you take tonight could be the one that makes your jaw rot off. Go flush whatever fruity flavored dip you use and post roll. Everything will be awesome, except for the fact it sucks to quit. Quit now, or quit when you die of cancer. Its your decision. Show all those other "cool" 19 year olds how to quit. Show them that your balls have dropped and that you are man enough to take control over the nic bitch. Ill be looking for you in January's quit group tonight! Post roll and ill help you anyway that I can. You've got to take the first step and mae that promise though.
-
Come on canslave, you wouldn't be here if you didn't want to quit. 6 days for me and they have all been hard, but these guys in here have been there and they will help you through. It took me 18 years to figure it out. Do yourself a favor and start right now and don't ever do it again.
-
What the hell are you waiting for?
You want to know what's on the other? What if I told you easy women with beer flavored nipples? Would that motivate you? No? Okay how about knowing you aren't killing yourself consciously? How about knowing you not longer paying to put poison in your body? How about free will? How about good breath? How about clean teeth? How about being able to taste food again? How about keeping your jaw?

:o Tomorrow is my first day to quit. Here some things that will make it easier to quit that i've researched on. These things are helpful and that you might have not thought about. Im gona do my best to do these things
Avoid junk food and eat healthy- it will help with your attitude and mood
No baseball watching- For me personally, this can be a big trigger as i see all the ball players dipping
Avoid Boredom at all costs
Take deep breaths, meditate, close your eyes and think of something awesome when you are craving
Listen to music that pumps you up for stuff. Use it as motivation to quit
Watch the stupid youtube dippers. They will make you feel better about your quit knowing they look like idiots and you don't
Gas station visits should be done with purpose and should be quick. IN and OUT
If you got a girlfriend or wife.... this would be a good time to spend a lot more time with them. they hate us dipping so if your around them more well you will be better off.
Understand that you will be a badass mofo if you can make it to 100 days like many of the legends on this site. That you can endure anything after this. It will make you a stronger MAN!
If you alone and your craving, its ok to yell and sceam or punch an object occasionaly. LET THE RAGE OUT!! don't hold it in all the time
Retrain your brain
Look in the mirrow day after day, looking at the improvement of your mouth and how your becoming a healthier you

30yrAddict...a fairly new quitter here...236 days quit today- my longest- and final quit...want to know how I did it? I did what the vets with thousands of days under their belt did:
1. Post Roll first thing each day- This is a promise not to use nicotine for just one day...anybody can quit for just one day!
2. Honor that promise
two steps repeated each day...it's that simple. you can do this- you just need to decide that you are quit and join us in beating this one day at a time.

First things first-
Quit. Post roll call promising not to use.
Then maybe I will read your advice on how to quit.
Quit first, lecture later.

Wow. That's some great preparedness. You've got your diet all laid out. Sounds like a real life style change. Congratulations...WAIT hold on...something is wrong...
OH RIGHT. You haven't quit yet. You might take to drinking yak piss and plunging your head in a toilet to keep the nic bitch off you but until you quit, you're still killing yourself. Dump that turd from your lip, flush you can and quit. Then do me a favor and check your undies for balls or not. I need to know.

I'm on the roll call now

I'll second that. Its amazing how scary it is. And you know what happens?
When you get on the other side of this and see exactly how small and meaningless tobacco is to you after you're clean, you'll be a different man. You'll start asking yourself questions like "Why the hell was I scared of that? What exactly is scary anymore? What else have I been scared to do?" Then, life begins again. And you and me and Gmann and all these folks are better people for it. Hence, the slogan "its simple but it ain't easy". Its never easy...you know that from the start. But you realize its simple after you quit and can see who you are and who you used to be.
Fight.

Fear in this situation is a good thing. If you never what to feel this way again, stay quit.

Notdeadyet- Im very pumped for this... and really fuckin scared lol
I was scared, depressed, anxious, nervous, angry and sad--Now I am proud, happy, enthusiastic and free. The bad feelings lose and the good feelings win as you make that promise to your brothers daily---keep making that promise---ONE DAY AT A TIME!!!! Before you know it, you will be free.
THIS PLACE WORKS----YOU GOT THIS!

Notdeadyet- Im very pumped for this... and really fuckin scared lol
Yes, scary stuff. This will help. Since you are in the January 2012 quit group, go find the January 2011 quit group. Start reading from day 1. You will read and learn in advance what to expect. You will see the freedom start to shine from the quitters. You will learn their pitfalls and be able to anticipate and recognize them.
You can do this. You have the support.

Oustanding!! This thread right here is what KTC is all about! This shit has just made my Friday great. Here we have a new, undecided, cautious potential quitter tiptoeing around the kiddie pool. We also have some badass quitters (new and old) who have coaxed him onto the diving board, and then taught him how to swim. Very nicely done, folks.... y'all have strengthened my QUIT today.
Obviously thats bullshit, especially hearing from some of u older guys who it sounds like, wished they quit a lonnng time ago.
I just wanted add that this, my friend, is the understatement of the century. I'll never completely forgive myself.
-
Notdeadyet- Im very pumped for this... and really fuckin scared lol
I often here the saying that if quitting was easy everyone would do it. But I really do not believe that at all.
If it was easy I think we would all have an easy excuse to keep using. We might say "it is so easy to quit I will just do it until *insert excuse here*". We might all wait until we start seeing white spots on our gums and quit until they are gone. Eventually they don't go away...
I really don't know if I could ever quit again because of how afraid I was and how hard it was to quit. I remember those days as being the toughest thing I have ever done and I just don't ever want that again. So remaining quit is my best choice.
-
Canslave, your enthusiasm and confidence is contagious and addictive in itself. We got this, bro.
-
J-Dawg- Thanx bro. Havin my first real rough crave... Pressin forward though. I just keep thinking to myself " no turd in lip". How's your quit going today man? 'i know your a bit farther then me into this all
-
feeling like a crack addict right now. I can't get dip out of my damn head. Thats all I can think about. UGHHHHH!
-

Nothing this addictive can possibly be good for you. I have to admit, Big Tobacco has fined tuned their effort in ensuring you never quit.
But, 'finger point' going to stop us from quitting.
-

You feel like an addict because you are an addict. Don't ever forget this. You never want to go through it again. Stay busy. Stay distracted. Run, bike, lift, ping pong, tennis, play catch, sex, punching bag, read this site, just do anything but don't put that shit in your lip ever again. I promise it will get better real soon (though the days seem like an eternity for you right now.)
-
there's some dumb voice in my head that keeps saying " hey your 19, u can quit dip when your done with college" You don't have to worry about cancer iff you only use for 5 years". Trying to combat these thoughts, stressing me the hell out to be honest.
-

You will always have a little voice whispering in your ear that it is OK to give in. Sometimes, she is silent and watching. Sometimes, she's screaming and won't wait.
Don't listen. Read some hof speeches. Go to chat. Do whatever it takes.
And don't even think of drinking for a little while.
-
yes, drinking is not even an opition for at least 3 or 4 weeks. REAL TALK
-
I had the same thought. I'll quit after school. That turned into I won't dip at my office or during working hours. I think that lasted a day or two. Next up was that I would quit upon marriage. I got married, but didn't quit. Then my daughter was on the way and I declared to myself (not to my wife or anyone else, because down deep I knew I'd never quit) that I'd quit before she was born. I left wife and baby in the hospital to go hide and dip. My family would all wonder where I had been, but the lies were "necessary" because I needed a fix.
Don't listen to your brain right now. It's all fucked up with addict thinking and nicotine trying to convince you to have just one. If you've spent more than five hours reading on this site, you know there is no such thing as "just one." Folks who have been quit for 8 and 15 years are in here posting roll (TODAY) and having to endure this bullshit again because of "just one."
If I could cram what I know into your 19 year old head, nic wouldn't have a chance with you today. You'd get laid a whole bunch, too, of course.
Seriously, you not only CAN do this...you NEED to do this. Don't waste another second letting that shit control your life, take your money and be the doosh bag friend who won't leave.
Let's get it done. Yell if you need anything.

Gmann is so right. There are a ton of 40 year-old guys on here like myself who had the same conversation with themselves at 19. There are a ton of 40 year-old guys on here who weren't strong enough back then and chewed more and more for the next 20 years. There are a ton of 40 year-old guys who will wonder for the rest of their lives if cancer is going to do them in. There are a ton of 40 year-old guys on KTC who would give almost anything to turn back the clock and quit at 19 instead of 40 so that they would have avoided all the past and future stress associated with that dirty addiction. If you are into the quit now and you are 19, do your 40 year-old self a favor and stay quit. Stay strong. Don't be a guy 20 years later, if you make it that far, wondering what could have been. The worst is over, take it one day at a time and you will get through this. I chewed for 20 years and never thought I could do it. Now, after taking it one day at a time for 63 days, I rarely even think about it. You will be no different, just be strong, post roll every day, and you will get past it too. We are here for you.

Isn't that the truth. Me, I started at 18 and now at 39 I only wish I would have found the tools many years back to know what harm I was doing to myself. Literally didn't even get it in my head that I wanted to quit until about the age of 30 but by then I was so far gone that there was no way I could quit - UNTIL I found this place. Do yourself a favor, kick it NOW.

Screwed up last night and bought a can..... greatttttt. Sorry fellow quitters I gave in, im a bitch for it

Wow, two cavers in the past 30 minutes. Why did you buy a can, your word means nothing? You promised your group that you would not use nicotine, and you just spit in January's face.
You need to go to your group, apolgize, and post day one. Dump your can and start over. Tell us what you did wrong and what you are going to do different.

who else caved

who else caved
Go to your quit group and find out.
Why does it matter to you, so you can justify to yourself that its ok to be weak and cave?

Listen, this shit is not fuckin easy. You will have days when you want to literally die. It WILL happen. I'm having that type of day myself, and I'm on Day 39. Do you know why I'm still on day 39? It's because as soon as I feel my quit slip just a little, I come here. These people in here are going through all the same shit you are. Some probably worse. You are not special. Your problems are not unique. Your craves are not worse than other peoples. BEFORE you fuckin cave, you need to enlist some help. I got that help today, and it saved my quit. The best thing you can do for yourself is to come clean and wipe the slate clean. Post Day 1 and learn from your failure. You CANNOT CAVE WITHOUT PERMISSION. If you are going to go off and do your own thing without consulting anyone here first, then fucking leave. Don't come back.

Screwed up? You fucking kidding me?
Did you get on the site before you bought that can?
Did you get into chat before you bought that can?
Did you text a fellow quitter before you bought that can?
Did you call a fellow quitter before you bought that can?
What exactly were your steps to fight? Tell me. Don't jerk us around fuckstick. This is your damn life. If you want to live, fight and use the tools. If you do not, go fly your flag somewhere else bitch. This is not acceptable. This is fucking lame.

Wow, that is the weakest ass explanation I've seen yet. Who are you fucking kidding? You're a fucking child. Come back when you are serious about quitting. Many of the people on this site dipped for more years than you've been alive and you come in here with lame ass shit like that, oopsy, I just screwed up and bought a can. Please. Put on your big boy pants and fucking be a man.

Proud to quit with you Miles. Canslave, don't waste our time unless you are ready to quit. I suggest you think long and hard before taking your next chew - the nic pull doesn't fully have you yet, but it will very soon. If you don't want to stress about dying from cancer the rest of your life, you should look at some cancer pics, read the Kerney story, and throw your can out now. Remember these words 10 years from now when you are stressing about the white spots in your mouth or your upcoming dentist visit - you could've stopped before any of that shit came into play. Don't fuck around with this, quitting only gets harder as you get older, and the risks only get greater.

I can't believe I wasted time offering support in here. Grow up, sir.

At least he admitted it. He could have never told us. Not quit your sulking and come back stronger than ever. Never do it again. These guys might give up on you. I won't. Toss your can, apologize to our quit group and do it. You're definitely taking for granted getting an extra strike. You never know if that next one will be your last.

JD in the end, he's the one quitting. Does my quit get impacted by this spineless gutless nameless caving piece of shit? No. Does it impact the whole bunch of us swimming in the quit pool? I think it does. My analogy is "swimming through a warm patch". No one wants to swim through a warm patch in the public quit pool and this turd just dropped his pants and pissed in the pool. I haven't spoken to this child but I will venture that the probability that he DID NOT reach out for help is 100%. He does not want to quit. That does not belong in the pool in this place. WANT is a requisite for this approach. Why you may ask? Because attempts are lame, trying is ghey and hope is a fat chick from high school. There is quit and there is not quit. First you want it. Then you fight for it. Then you protect it. And we all do this each day. One day at a time.
With respect to "admitting it", his integrity is already jeopardized. He quit that day. He gave his word to his quit brothers/sisters, the supporters and you. And he chose not to honor it. Not to mention he has to get up the next morning, look in the mirror and say "I chose death. This is not what I want." That's the painful part. As much as he belongs to a community this could all be some incredible massive super computer simulating the personalities of all of us (most likely developed by LOOT). This may not be real. Who knows. So I guess the only thing you can count on being real is your integrity because of what it means to yourself.

Bump, more bullshit. I thought this one wanted it.

It takes a man to quit. Some have to wait to grow up before they are able to quit.

Worry about quitting. Your teeth can handle the lowered gum line. Can it handle it if you keep dipping? Hope the one you just had was your last otherwise you might not have a tooth in that gum line.
If you have the money, get grafts. But it's not going to make much of a difference really. As long as the bone is strong still you're good to go.

Get the bone checked out. If the bone is still strong then you should be goo to go. Maybe might need a graft down the line, but who knows.
-
i know you dipped for 10 years. guess your good right?

Gums can be receded but if still well attached to the tooth they'll protect the root and you won't lose the tooth. You probably won't want a graft unless you are experiencing lots of sensitivity to temperature in your teeth. (I went to the dentist last week for the first time in 6 years. My gums are waaay low after dipping for nearly 4 decades. He recommended no graft unless my teeth were hurting.)

Notdeadyet- knowing that you dipped for 38 years and didnt lose a tooth makes me feel a hell of a lot better!. Didnt go to the dentist for 6 years?? cmon man! lol jk

I don't get cavities. If you tend to get cavities your odds of losing a tooth skyrockets.

Yeah, well I lost 3 teeth, and had 4 root canals and crowns when I quit. Do it long enough and the odds are not in your favor.

Haven't seen you in a couple of days.
I guess you are still a slave to the can.
You were offered more help than most quitters.
