Title: trying to quit
Post by: acdcsteve on November 15, 2009, 01:00:00 PM
Im 18 and ive been dipping since I was 12. Started out with the fruity flavor shit, and since then ive been dipping copenhagen snuff for about 4 years. Im on the baseball team at my high school and a lot of the guys on my team use dip/chew. Its natural to want to throw a dip in before practice, during practice, during a game, etc.. The main reason I want to quit is because I will be having oral surgery January 4th. I will be having a bone graft from my jaw along with 4 wisdom teeth being extracted. I was told the increase chance of oral cancer will be much greater once I have this procedure. Ive been going through a can a day for the past 2 years. Now im trying to slow that down and do 2 dips at most per day and Im hoping to quit completely december 31. Its going to to be a tough battle but I think I can do it.

Welcome Steve.

You need to get a few things straightened out before you'll be able to quit:

1. You can't 'try' to quit. You have to actually do it. Make the decision, and quit.

2. The best way to quit, based on my experience and the overwhelming consensus of successful quitters on this site, is cold turkey. Just stop right now and the physical withdrawals are gone in 3-4 days. That's a few really shitty days, but most of the physical stuff is really over that quickly.

3. "I think I can do it" and "hoping to quit by December 31" has a flavor of predicted failure to it... try saying "I will do it". Take a stand and say "I will not use tobacco today", and then follow through and keep your promise. When tomorrow gets here, do it again. One day at a time.

4. Why will it be easier to quit on December 31 than it is right now?

The foundation of quitting on this site is posting roll call. Each day, you post roll call as a promise to not use tobacco for that day, and you keep your promise. Then you come back tomorrow and do it again. Here are a couple of links to get you started:

Right on! Hang in there... it starts to get better around 72 hours. I'd strongly recommend posting roll call with your quit group, first thing every morning. It may seem trivial, but I can almost guarantee that it will save your quit. The simple act of making a promise each day to not use nicotine can get you past some momentary weakness, and you WILL have some momentary weaknesses.

I'm glad you decided to take the plunge. It's definitely worth it - At 309 days quit I still realize every day how much I appreciate not having something constantly tugging at me.

your quit group is here: February 2010 (http://forum.killthecan.org/index.php?showtopic=2754)

Welcome, you can and will do this. Dip never made anyone a better baseball player, and please tell your coach he is an idiot for allowing it on his field. Stick close to the site, ask for help when you need it and what ever you do, keep that crap out of your mouth.

Um... I think he's already quit; posted roll call today. He should be about 64 hours into it now.

Keep it going Steve, you've almost got the nic out of your system now. Good work!

yo dude, u r doing the right thing. and listen all those other 18 year olds, your teamates who are going to give you shit for quitting and stuff, well those guys, were us guys. let them be the jerkoffs who go 10-15-20+ years before they realize their lives, their mouths, their health is fucked up. Yes, I said lives. go read all the stories on here of grown fucking men hiding dips from their girlfriends, wives, kids. Go read about all the pussy we passed up cause we were dipping in college like you will soon be. Etc.

I also quit because of mouth surgery. Yep, i was an ass, I dipped right up until surgery. Why, cause I was a loser. Don't be a loser.

I started dipping around 24 years old, playing softball. the whole team dipped. now those guys are in their early 40's like me and all fucked up. i turn around and now i got a son 3 years younger than you. if flies by.

stay the fuck quit, u r doing the right thing. and fuck those other kids and coaches. i tore into the baseball coach at the local high school here for letting those kids dip too.

i'll be watching u, boy.

This is the best game ever. Keep it going day by day. I will even say period by period. I work in a high school and when I quit it was minute by minute. Then bell to bell. You can keep it going and enjoy all the aviatars, they are hot.

Today was by far the hardest day. I was offered dip atleast 5 times. Went to baseball and had batting practice on the field (best time to put a dip in)..... One of my buddies on the team also dips copenhagen snuff...that's my dip. Nothing better than that. He offered me a pinch and I was tempted to put one in. I had the can in my hand, packed it and took the lid off....but I said FUCK YOU copenhagen snuff, you haven't done shit for me and I've wasted so much money on you GO TO HELL U.S. Smokeless tobacco company.

Nothing better than that.
So fucking much is better than cope, I can't even tell you. I would literally kill to be where you are and have the opportunity to quit at your age. Instead I have a big fat nicotine addict stamp on my forehead that I have to deal with everyday. Man, if I woulda quit at 18........ 2 cans a day for a year =730 cans a year for 20 years or 14,600 cans of chew at an average of 3.50 a can (prob low) =51,000. 'bang head' 'bang head' 'bang head' . Yeah... not to mention all the lovely shit that came with all those lil fruity fuck buckets of cancer. Your on the right track, just keep it up. Your idiot team mates want you to dip so they can feel like its ok. Believe me, that shit is NOT OK. Don't think just cause your 18 that you have time to quit if you fail. The very next dip you take may be the one that gives you cancer.

Want to never be offered a chew again? A few guys have done this - take the tin they offer, dump it on the ground, and hand the tin back to them. You won't be getting any more offers. Stay quit. Go in chat. Stick close to the site. Get phone #'s.
