I am new here and joined a little over a week ago. I have been addicted to nicotine for over 25 years. I smoked for 12 years and then started dipping. That was in 96. I quit dipping for a couple of years only to get addicted to the nic gum. Well then I went back to dipping. I am tired of being a slave to nicotine and I am going to quit cold turkey. I went and threw out all of my kodiak tonight and tomorrow I will post day one with July. I only want to go through this once and the accountability to the group will help me a lot. I am scared shitless though because I have always had my dip.

IF you are a man of your word and you really want to quit then this is the place for you. Make sure you read what it is we do here and what is expected of you. Dump your cans, toss out the gum, patches or any other NIC delivery system you have and post your promise you will not use. Keep your word and you will be quit.
It is going to be tough, it can be scary but it most certainly can be done. I was a 20+ year dipper as were many others on this site. Get your mind right and you can do this. Drink plenty of water and juice to help detox. The next 3 days are going to SUCK... remember what they feel like.
Read everything you can. It helps distract your mind and it also helps you know what is coming. I will be looking for you to post your word tomorrow. Lets get this shit done !!!!

Your dip is not your friend.
If you caught a " friend" slipping you a lethal mix of poisons, and telling you it was medicine you'd probably try to kill him
Your dip has NEVER been there for you
You feel like it helps because it is taking away the withdrawls. When your stressed, your nic level plummets. You need a chew to get " fixed" So the pattern goes I'm angry, sad, stressed, etc- brain releases adrenaline and cortizone- Blood stream nicotine level crashes- now your fucked up and want a chew. You have chew- you feel better. Problem that originally made you all wound up still there. You have just successfully avoided dealing with your problem and fed the craving little nic monkey on your back. That garbage does nothing but make it impossible to handle shit without it shoved in your pie hole.
I used to be in sales and when I was working a smoker in a high pressure sales tactic I would prolong the presentation for as long as I could. I would have that little fucker dying to go outside and smoke. I could usually get a contract penned just so they could get me to go away. That shits a handicap at best, but there for you ....no.
I get it, I didnt make a major adult decision in my entire life without a wedge in my lip. I thought like you , that it was a support. I learned that it was just a chain that was holding me back , you will too. Be happy bmartin, your on the road to something new and I gotta tell you, it's worth it. Not fun but it'll be the best thing you ever did.
23yrs- 2 cans a day to 435 days quit , if I can do it anybody can.

I have a white spot on the tip of my tongue. It is pretty small and is freaking me out a bit. I am 13 days into my quit. I had some other sores from dipping but they have gone away. Anybody familiar with this kind of sore?

I had several sores AFTER I quit as well. After several weeks they pretty much went away. I asked the same question at the time and was told that they are part of the healing process as your body gets all that shit and chemicals from dipping out of your body. If it persists for an extended period of time you may want to go to your dentist to get it checked out. You may also want to put some hydrogen peroxide on it as well. Congrats on 13 days!!! You're doing great.

It's nothing. Guaranteed. Know why you noticed it in the first place? BECAUSE YOU'RE LOOKING....something you wouldn't ordinarily do. In the course of your lifetime, you've probably had a thousand different "sores" and never paid them any mind. Except for the ones you got after going down on that waitress.
Just listen to me, dood. I am a Nervous Nelly. My words come from experience.

If in doubt, see a medical professional. I am not a medical professional, do not play one on TV, and did not stay in a Holiday Inn Express last night, but I've always used the rule of thumb that if it does not clear up in 14 days or so to go get it checked out.
To answer your question, I am 51 days in and have had a few sores here and there. I had one on the tip of my tongue last week. It cleared up in a few days. In fact, I have one right now where I bit the inside of my jaw. It seems to be clearing up.

Good advice. Your mouth is going through many changes and is healing from all the damage you have been doing to it over the years. I had sores off and on and also seemed to bite my cheeks more than I did when I dipped.
I had sores pop up from time to time and like you they scared the shit out of me every time one popped up. They all went away quickly. If something persists then go see a doc.
You need to plan a visit to the dentist and the doc around day 30 anyway.

The sore on the tip of your tongue is probably from touching the inside of your cheek and your old dip spot over and over again. More than likely it's an irritated taste bud.
I find that I have more sores in my mouth when I'm not dipping than when I was...funny how that works. Had one the other day that I just knew was the Big-C, but it healed and went away.

Today is my 23rd day free from nicotine and I have to tell you this had to be one of the worst days I can remember in my quit. This morning was brutal. It seemed liked the cravings were coming every minute. It really fucking pissed me off quite frankly because I am thinking to myself that wait a minute I am day 23 days into this things should be getting easier. I had to go get some fake at lunch to calm myself down. This is a funny deal. I remember thinking the other day that this isn't as bad as I thought maybe I wasn't that addicted - yeah right. Just when you think you are having an easy time the nic bitch comes up and kicks you in the ass. So anyway I got my Oregon Mint fake and things calmed down this afternoon. I even went out for a few beers after work and no cravings what so ever. As I look back on my quit I can point to one day in each of the 3 weeks that I have been quit that I have struggled with Day 7 in week 1 day 14 in week 2, and today day 23 in week 3. The great thing is I am still beating the nic bitch. So I will wake up tomorrow for day 24. Thanks for listening.

Keep it up brother. The bad times will get shorter in length and come along less often as you move forward.

So I am 41 days into my quit and I went to my dentist today to get checked out and make sure that my mouth is ok. It didn't go as well as I had hoped. He referred me to an oral surgeon because he thinks the leukoplakia on the inside of my cheek should be gone by now and it is not. It is really freaking me out quite frankly because my first thought is oh shit I didn't quit soon enough. Anyone have anything like this happen to them? It doesn't look as bad as pictures that I have seen and it is not white. It looks like wrinkled skin in the back of my mouth where I usually kept my dip. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks Brett

Hang in there man and think positive. I am sure you dentist is just being thourough. When do you see a specialist? The waiting to see a doctor is horrible, so no use playing the "What-If" game.
I didn't go to the dentist right away, but my mouth was a battlefield for quite a while. Mine kept peeling for the first 100 days. Was gross. Then it stopped.

Agreed. You're doing what needs to be done... seeing a pro.
IF (and that's a big if) its something that you need to deal with, then you've caught it early which is the best thing you can do.
As bman said, try not to play the "What if" game cause it'll drive you crazy.
We're here for you!

bmartin,
As they say in investing, "past performance does not guarantee future results."
But my dentist got worried enough about the condition of my inner cheek, she sent me to an oral surgeon for a biopsy...twice in the span of 3-4 years.
The first was uncomfortable, but not too bad...came back clean. The second was friggin' miserable...hurt like all hell, and I was sure that two strikes was gonna be it for me...I was almost resigned to having the big "C."
By the grace of God, Allah, Buddha or Kelly Clarkson...the second test came back okay as well.
And my dumb ass STILL dipped for a couple months before I finally sacked up got here.
I'm hoping you have the same kind of good fortune I had...thoughts prayers with you.
