21 years and 5 months ago, I experienced my first buzz from chew. I fell in love with it. I remember vowing that I would chew forever. In 1997 I tried to quit. I fell off the wagon 3 months later. On 3/23/09, I again declared myself a quitter. Today was day 11, and one of my toughest days yet. I decided to google "quit chewing" and stumbled upon this site. I know I need a support group that is made up of others in my shoes. I really want to stay quit, and I am ready.
Although I have not put a chew in my mouth, I have been using the nicotine lozenges. I have been popping about 5 per day. They have really helped to curb my mood and appetite swings. When do I go cold turkey??? The box says 12 weeks, but I know I am tougher than that. Am I kidding myself to think I can ween myself off of these within another week or so??? Thanks for those of you who have already welcomed my to the club.

When do I go cold turkey
Right now.
NRT's are tolerated here if used exactly as prescribed. If not, your cheating. Toss all that shit. you are simply delaying the inevitable. The first few days will suck but after that, the nic is out of your system and you can get busy playing and winning the mind games.
My 2 cents.
Glad you are ready to quit.
-
Congratulations on quitting! I don't know how the nicotine pills work but I wanted to be off the stuff completely. First few days were bad but now I feel like I'm making real progress on day #9 totally nicotine free.

The box says 12 weeks, but I know I am tougher than that.
Are you really tougher than that?????? If so, be a tough guy and say fuck it, I don't need this this new crutch that's helping me overcome another crutch. Seriously, if you have been chewing for 21 years getting over the nicotine withdrawal will be the easy part. You got a tough road ahead fighting the craves during the activities where you used to always chew. Re-programming the mind after 21 years is not easy. At day 39 for myself, it's still A LOT of work for me. Stay close to this website to help remind yourself why chewing is a worthless habit. Congrats on 11 days!!!!!! Oh, by the way, if you're a Bronco fan big props to your new coach for fucking up his QB situation. My team was thrilled to give draft picks and Orton for your baggage. 'na na' 'na na'

Welcome aboard Jeff! Always glad to have another friend with us on our journey.
As for cold turkey? I quit cold turkey 13 days ago. The first 3 days are hell. Especially day 3 for me.
But after that, as guys here have already stated, the cravings aren't about the nicotene. They're about the damn "triggers". The damn activities we've all been doing for so many years with a chew or a dip in our mouths. I'm still struggling with that.
It's tough. But you can do it. Fuck it. Get the nic out of your system and go through hell for 3 days. IMO the sooner you get that over with the better off you'll be.

Husky, I came on here last Sunday, about 12 days into my quit but still using the gum. I dunno, son, but when I mentioned I was using the gum, I didn't get the reaction you got. I got my fucking ass kicked!
I wasn't really sure why. But then I started reading some of the stuff on here, posts like you just got, and realized, yeah, the gum was just another nicotine crutch, even though it was very sporadic. And based on the physical reactions I got after dropping the gum, 6 days ago, you can fucking bet, it's doing alot more to your brain than you think.
My advice? Bite the fucking bullet. Throw the stuff away and go, cold turkey. I am on like day 17, 18 of no dip, but I use 6 as my quit date, because that's the last time I ever used any nicotine.
It hurts. I'm sick. My head hurts. But I don't want any other stimulants in my body.
Do what you gotta do, but I say go it alone. Some of these other vets can probably do a better job than me explaining it.

FtheKodiak, brother we must have missed something in the fog lol. I'm not advocating gum and I don't know how the pills work...I do know I didn't want any of that nicotine in me at all, period. It is a daily grind but worth it being clean, free, A NON USER!! Cold turkey on 03/27/09...MY FINAL QUIT!
Jeff, take the plunge and go cold turkey. ALL KINDS of SUPPORT HERE! Even at 0345 hrs when you can't sleep!

Yeah after I posted I thought I got the names wrong. Too foggy to correct. I stand corrected, though, but my advice is first hand and meant for everyone else!

And dang good advice too! Quit cold turkey and stay quit, I couldn't agree more!! Just got yelled at by my wife for being an ass......Taking the dog for a walk 'bang head'

Good morning quitters. I assumed this was a Cold Turkey site, but wasn't sure. Sounds like several people leaned on gum or lozenges for a few days, but eventually bit the bullet. Funny thing is, I had some breakfast with the family, popped a lozenge, and sat down to see what the responses to my post last night would be. I guess Day 1 of nic free for me will be April 5, 2009.
I appreciate the tough love, and understand that eventually an addict needs to be nic free. However, I am one proud mother fucker that copenhagen hasn't touched my lips for damn near 2 weeks. Everyone needs to be careful analyzing individuals who have been copenhagan dependant for over two decades.
As for anymore Chicago Bears fans, bring lots of tissue with you to your games. Between you and Cutler, there will be lots of tears. What a pussy Cutler is. At 17-20, he isn't even a winning quarterback. Lovey Smith will never allow Cutler to throw for 4000 yards again.
Peace out Quitters.

Yeah me too! Fiance hates me. But I am being a jackass because my stomach looks like that of a 6 year old Ethopian refugee, I can't shit, my head hurts, and I've got a canker sore the size of a penny in the back of my throat. Love it!
'help'
i wish she would just show me some 'boob'

Great decision. We need more Colorado quiters too (there's a ton of us here). There's a tobacco sales rep that covers CO and is losing lots of money lately.
It's a long conversation, but I would advise cold turkey as these guys are saying. When you use nic gum or whatever, it makes for a long, slow, drawn out period of getting the nic out of your system...body constantly in withdrawl from it. If you go cold turkey, 3-4 days and your done with the nic.
Shoot me an IM if you want to discuss this further, but my vote would be cold turkey. I too am a 21 yr (mostly cope) Colorado quitter. I have tried it both ways, with aids (gum/patch) and cold turkey. Let me know if I can help you.
You'll find tons of support here. Spend a lot of time reading everything you can here getting to know some guys.

Brother that is ME....and YOU! Fresh Cope for let me see...21 years. I know tomorrow when you get off the nic, you'll have a ton of support from some knowledgeable folks here. I am a newbie but determined..also an insomniac now that I quit lol, so PM me anytime you have a need. I'll BS with ya until the craves pass if you wish.

Hey all...addicted to Cope for 33 years here...now 47 days free. Come along for the ride, it's great

Yo, coloradopomy, you should be proud of yourself!
I am proud too that this Tuesday will be 21 days without putting fucking Kodiak in my mouth. My quit date however, will be 7 on Sunday, because that's the day I stopped the gum.
Nobody told me so. I could have used any date I wanted to. I'm a little pissed I'm "officially" only 7 days, when I could say, look at me I'm at 21 days. But I dunno, I realized pretty quickly it was better to be totally nic free and that's my own choice. Don't worry I got some pretty strong opinions on the subject earlier in the week.
Don't take it personal, and don't let it break down any of your own accomplishments, just know that the strong opinions on here are for one reason only. To get you/us to stay clean, forever.
-
coloradopomy here is my two cents worth for you....
I was a cope fiend for 35 years. Tried half dozen times to quit and lost the fight. I am now on day 380 cold turky. It was 3-4 days of pure hell geting the nic outta my body. Now we play the mind games. Not so often anymore, but they do pop up from time to time.
So my advice, throw it all away and get on with the quittin. You have a great supporrt system here at KTC. Non better anywhere else. You have all kinds of advice from every walk of life here. There is tough love for some and border line homo love for others (Smokey and TFurrh) In the end it's driven to the same end goal, NO NIC. P E R I O D!!!!!!!!
Welcome aboard
-
Rock on. Day 1 begins right now. No More NIC!!
-
Nice work coloradopomy! YOU CAN DO THIS. The next couple days are a real bitch. Lean on the people here, they know what it is about! I've made it to day 10 and fell so much better. I know you'll succeed if you stay around here. GREAT DECISION!!
-
So far so good. Doesn't hurt that #24 won the race. Thanks for the encouragement. I am committed.
-

Truer words have not been spoken. Great choice flushing all the crutches, man-ing up and getting it done. What Husky said can't be said enough times. Stick close and you will get it done.
BTW - I'm in Broomfield and have 102 days free from a 24 year Nic addiction so you are definitely not alone.
-
Thanks rkymtnman. I will be blasting off from Jeffco airport tomorrow morning nic free. Day 2 and counting.
-
I'm an April quitter- a stones throw from Jeffco Airport. Open your window when you take off and you can smell my clean-ass quit breath!!!!
Repeat after me-- I am a quitter!!!
Good to have you bro!

Today I will sit on my ass in Buffalo Wy for over 7 hours, without a T.V. Half-way into this day, I have eaten 1/2 bag of baby carrots, 1/2 bag of sunflower seeds, a giant snickers bar, a sandwich, and have downed about 50 oz's of water.
Last week, I would have not eaten ONE FUCKING THING. I would have just kept feeding my lip with copenhagen and let it do the job of curbing my appetite.
Today is Day 2 without the NIC. Today is a GOOD FUCKING DAY. Tomorrow will also be a good fucking day!

Ok Guys/Gals, here's the deal...
Today is Day 30 without the copenhagen, and I am feeling pretty proud. However, while all my attention has been spent avoiding the can, I neglected the ol' physic.
Taking roll call everyday has really been a blessing for my quit. Without the accountability, I probably would have failed like all the other quits before. So it got me thinking, I will post a goal for the physic, and hold myself accountable to make an effort. Call it the BIGGEST LOSER OF THE QUITTER CLUB.
By my HOF in July, I will be 195 lbs. That means I have to lose 30 lbs.
I PROMISE TO: exercise in some fashion or another everyday. If I dont have a gym, I will walk/run, do situps/pushups, jumping jacks, lunges, anything to raise the heartrate and burn the calories. I will eat a little smarter, and exercise harder after I drink (notice I didnt say drink less).
Anybody else need a virtual workout partner?

I just started a diet today too.
I don't have a weight loss goal, per se, just to feel better about getting in my clothes. I weight train so I have never really paid attention to the scale I just know I am a fat turd and can't stop eating.
I will say, that I want to fit comfortably in my size 33's and stay that way.
I'll be on your ass.
I was inspired to know that Hugh Jackman was only a year younger than me, so I decided that not only am i not too old to be the sexiest man alive, I can be ripped to shit like him.
Plus Jamie Moyer is like 46 years old and still pitching in the Majors, and Brad Pitt is older than me.
-
Funny you mentioned Hugh Jackman, I heard the same thing this weekend. I will be 40 in August, and have never gotton that far out of shape. But like you said, I'm kind of a fat turd now that the nic no longer controls the metabolism.
I thought about doing one of those before/after pics like you see in the magazines, but I was worried that some of you may have eaten recently and didn't necessarily want to gag it up. Well, that and Smokeyg would have access to it.

LOL.
and dean too.
Do it!!!!!
I already fucked up a little. Had about 1,000 calories before Noon. Was supposed to hold me until late dinner after a 7:30 meeting i have to go to. yes, I know stupid way of eating, but I couldnt look at my bag of food I had sitting here that was supposed to get me through to quittin time.
but then i had to run out for an emergency.
stopped in at 7-11 and got one of those nasty wraps, plus those Naked Juices. so that's another 500 calories, at the least.
BUT I AM TRYING!

It hasn't been used in a while, but we do have a Weight Loss forum over in the Wildcard section: index.php?showtopic=79 (http://forum.killthecan.org/index.php?showtopic=79)
