Morning. My name is Dan and I had my last dip of delicious Redseal wintergreen yesterday at noon. I am 28 years old, and have been chewing this shit since my sophomore year in high school. I have a beautiful wife and our first child due in August. Quitting dip is the last piece of the puzzle. I know this is gonna be tough, and I'm already feeling it bad right now. I am hoping that we can fight through this together.

Don't feel bad...feel liberated.
And it's not delicious...it's fucking poison. Romanticize and fail.
Welcome to the site Learn How and Why (http://forum.killthecan.org/index.php?showforum=13) we post Roll Call. Make sure you undertand #4 before you attempt #3.
Again, welcome to the rest of your life.

Morning, Dan. I am fairly insulted at the "delicious ......" comment. That has no place on this forum. I agree with LOOT that to be successful, you must stop romanticizing dip. It is the enemy from here on out. And honestly, I thought I enjoyed tobacco until one day I realized it just didn't have the same effect that it once did. The joy was gone. I was constantly packing my lip, but getting no satisfaction out of it anymore. It was just feeding an addiction at that point. That was 252 days ago and I quit that day. Yes, just a small number compared to LOOT (TOOL??) and some others around here, but I'm proud of my quarter comma. I say all that to make this point: I sincerely hope that the coming days find you filled with only loathing for tobacco, UST, and everything related. It will make your quit much easier. Let me know if I can help any way.

Dan, I thought it was delicious, too. It's not. I've been to some pretty nice restaurants in my day, but none had skoal on the menu. I've never had anyone tell me to try a new place because the copenhagen souffle was to die for.
Keep reading this site. You do not enjoy dipping. You need to dip to feed your nicotine addiction. Make the decision that you will not allow another day to go by as a slave to nicotine, post roll and do whatever it takes to keep nicotine out of your body for the day.
Good to be quit with you. Give a shout if I can help.

POST ROLL! Get on with the quit!! Take it one day at a time, and in a few days you will be able to smell and taste! , now thats delicious!! Nico
-
Welcome to the New You! Hey, guess what! This is going to suck :)
Good news! You are not alone...August 2011 and all these fine Quitters are in your corner bud.
Get angry man. UST has been lying to you and now you have to rewire your brain.
Enjoy :)...And keep that shit out of your face. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A5GYOsKLp6o&feature=share)

Its so delicious I don't taste any of the dozen of poisons! Wow...thanks UST!
Got to get angry man. We all bought into a gigantic marketing scheme using a chemical that WILL kill each of us after repeated exposure. We've been made fools while our lives the ones around us suffer and a giant machine makes a profit. Its complete fucking bullshit. We're smarter than that. Get angry. Plow through the shitty period and get quit. One day at a time.
I don't know what pisses me off more, a giant company making a profit on selling poison to people or the fact that our government allows it.

I am a big personal responsibility guy myself.
It is our own fault that we bought in to the scheme. There is no one else to blame but the person in the mirror for making that choice.
It is also our responsibility to quit.
We all start by posting roll every morning. And then making the responsible choice.

I see you have posted, so welcome aboard. I am glad you are here. This journey will suck at times but it is a journey well worth traveling. I just want to let you know that if you need help from me you can count on it. PM me if so.
-
I appreciate all of the encouragement. And Rad, didn't mean to insult you. It was a poor choice of word on my part.
I wish I could go back and find my 18 year self who first started dipping and bash his fucking face in right now. Might be time for some fresh air.
-
Peyton,
just FYI, folks here jump on certain words and mentalities. they are trying to eliminate the vocabulary of an addict and the mentality of a caver from the rest of us that are new to the site. it's tough love, but for those that are truly invested in quitting, it is definitely genuine.
post roll every day as your promise to be nic free for that day. then keep your word to the rest of us. use this site to rage, to ask for help, to seek workarounds/solutions/tricks, etc. there's a ton of information here, and there are a ton of successful quitters. everyone will tell you posting roll is vital.
let me know how i can help... proud to be quit with you.

“Cherry Skoal is for somebody who likes the taste of candy, if you know what I’m saying.”
Freedman, A, “Juiced up: How a tobacco giant doctors snuff brands to boost their ‘kick,’” Wall Street Journal, October 26, 1994 [quoting former UST sales representative].
At 38 after 25 years of chewing Copenhagen I looked in the mirror and said "Soul, its time to stop killing yourself". I didn't say that at 13 and I would argue a 13 year old doesn't understand the notion of how dangerous addiction is or why someone would knowingly give them poison.

On Day 3 of the quit. I found myself spending most of this morning talking myself out of either punching my boss in the face or putting my head through the computer screen. I am typically a pretty laid back dude, and feel like I'm having an out of body experience right now.
Please someone tell me that this will lighten up soon. I didn't expect this to be easy, and I know I'm fucking dominate this thing .... But, I just need to see some light at the end of the tunnel.

Hey Peyton,
Met you in chat last night. Glad you are here. The physical withdrawal from nicotine last approximately 72 hours. Things get better after that. I was on edge for about 3 weeks total. Irritable, fog, etc. Here are some good links for symptoms. http://killthecan.org/yourquit/what.asp (http://killthecan.org/yourquit/what.asp)
http://killthecan.org/yourquit/symptoms.asp (http://killthecan.org/yourquit/symptoms.asp)
Remember this crap. This is a reminder of why you never want to put nicotine in your system again. Something that makes you feel this terrible when you do not use it can't be good for you can it?
Ask as many questions as necessary. Others can learn from what you are going through as well.

It. Will. Get. Better. Promise. Stay. Strong. If. I. Can. Do. It. You. Can. Do. It. You. Have. No. Idea. How. Great. Freedom. Is. Stay. Quit.

Peyton, it will get better man for sure but it's going to take some TIME! Sorry, there is no easy way around this. You're going to come out of this major suck in a couple of weeks and then it's going to be a mental grind for awhile. I'm day 159 today and I can finally say that for the last couple weeks I have pretty much been fine, very few cravings, loving life without being controlled. My best advice here is make your daily commitment and don't worry about day 20, or 40, etc worry about today. Stay quit today, wake up tomorrow and repeat. One day at a time is the only way to take this on. Also, know that you will NEVER have to go thru this again, quit for good, for life and this is the only time you will ever have to experience the horrible suck. Remember how bad you feel right now, never forget even when the bitch is trying to lure you back because well, you've gone this long you deserve one right? Wrong, it will happen man, just embrace how you feel and remember it.
A great quote somebody on this site said and if I could remember I would give credit where it's due but always remember that dip or nicotine only solves the problems that it creates. This was game changing for me. I hope some of this helps please feel free to PM me if you need any advice or someone else to bitch at.

Focus on the rage....the rage is what got me through it. Turn it around on your addicition, your weakness. Get mad dog mean and keep your head down and plow through it.
Good luck buddy, it was the right decision.

Cancrusher's Guide to Dealing with Symptoms of Nicotine Withdrawal
Step 1: Face
Face the fact that this is going to suck...bad.
Step 2: Accept
Accept that there is little you can do to make the pain subside completely.
Step 3: Float
Float through the fog and headaches, paying little attention to the severity of the pain because you know it will eventually pass.
Step 4: Let time pass
In the world of Quitting, Time is the ultimate healer. Simply allow the time to pass. It is going to with or without your constant supervision.

The only thing nic use does is relieve withdrawal symptoms that come from not using. That's it. ~ theo3wood

Hang in there, bro! It will get better. Everybody is different. Some shake off the side effects early, others take a long time. The stuff you are dealing with right now should begin to lighten up within the first week. But beware, after that is when it gets tricky. A few days of gung-ho "I got this!" will be immediately be followed by a day of raw emotion that will try to drive you back to the can. Be ready for that. Get cocky in your quit at any point, and you leave yourself open to fall in the trap of "I can have just one.". None of us can have JUST ONE. Bottom line: once this initial funk clears, you'll be all over the board for a while. Let me know if I can help.

There is an old saying in AA: " Time takes time".
Kind of like weight loss, you didn't gain the weight over nite. Your recovery will not happen overnite either. Every day that you are quit is a victory. You must be vigilant with your commitment every day, hour and/or minute. Whatever works for you. It has worked for so many and most of all, don't ever stop asking for help and insight. ;)
-
Peyton, it got better 3 days ago when you stopped shoving that crp in your mouth. The nic bitch just wants back in, don't let it.
You need more help, shoot me a PM and I will give you my number.

I like it. I need to keep this in mind. Like many of you, I am an addict who is surrounded by tobacco users on a regular basis (football coach). I've allowed this to ruin past attempts at quitting - but not this time. Combination of things lead me to this quit this site. My family well being as top priority, but also MY CONTROL. Might be a coincidence, but I found this site (community) last week after ordering from Jake's Mint Chew. This was the day after I saw the HBO Real Sports Special on tobacco in Major League Baseball - Brett Butler, and the story on Tony Gwynn.
Every excuse I have ever used to continue using is complete Bullshit! I have a sign up in my room it's time I took it to heart:
"Excuses are the tools of the weak and incompetent. They build monuments of nothingness and those who specialize in them are seldom capable of anything else."
EaglePride
No Excuses.

great way to beat the nic bitch back, EP.
proud to be quit with you, brother!

Yes - tough days. Like when I head out to that field and feel the grass under my feet - sounds crazy, but really don't know what it is like to do my job without it. Something I will battle almost everyday as long as I'm in this business.
During Spring Ball (before I actually quit) I started cutting back, but realized that would never be the answer. iuchewie others have said it before about being 1 dip away from a $5/day habbit - I'm that guy have been that guy for the past 10 F'n years! I say 10 years because before that I had no intention of quitting.
I love sunflower seeds Jake's Mint Chew has realllllllly been good to me the last 2 days.
-
i'm still trying to find some dip alternate in my area... everyone's laughed when i ask for fake dip so far.
one last place to try before it's internet time.
seeds and gum, gum and seeds....
-
A couple years ago I was able to get BackOff at an Ingles Grocery Store. Sounds crazy, but also used to buy it at a Tobacco shop! Go figure - corner the market on both ends.
-
"i'm still trying to find some dip alternate in my area... everyone's laughed when i ask for fake dip so far." - dchogs
so true, dchogs. been to every walmart in the area and have got the same "what the hell are you talking about" response each time. in a way though, openly admitting my addiction to walmart employees and others who are around at the time, has made my resolve to quit even stronger. hope your last place comes through!
keep up the good quit Eagle. one day at a time
-
Stay away from the fakie. Seeds, hard candy, gum, etc. No fakie.
-
I should have some smokey mountain in the mailbox when I get home. Tool ... why no fakie, just out of curiosity?
-
"Tool"? Now that's funny. I don't care who you are.
Anyhow, here's something I wrote on my day two or something. On day 435, that is just a distant memory, and not long after that first few days it started getting better, little by little. Just hang in there like all these guys say, and with time, this quitting thing gets to be a breeze. I still check the lock on my door, though, every single morning.
Day 2:
Can't sleep anyway and I had this thought to add to my early days log. I was reading a vet's comments on "closing the door." I can't recall who or the exact context (I've read so much, and my attention span is so hammered right now...sorry to the quiter I'm failing to properly acknowledge. I'll try to figure it out later).
At any rate, the discussion revolved around arriving at some point when you really feel that you've closed the door on the nicotine chapter of your life, like it's really something that is (more or less) behind you. It'll always be there since we're all addicts here, but I get the sentiment, a warmish feeling that nicotine is something from the past, so long as you maintain a certain level of vigilance learned through the journey.
I'm just battling away right now and clearly feel nowhere near that point. I did have a thought, though, that may or may not be worth thinking about later.
I am really committed to this thing. I am quit, not trying. In that sense, I have already closed the door. The problem is that the grizzly (literally and figuratively) is still right outside like Jack Nicholson with an ax and a smile, and he's swingin' away. What's more, my door is flimsy as hell, and I can't leave it for a second. There's no latch, no lock. I have to stand here and lean into with everything I've got, because if I relax even one of my muscles for a second, the doors gonna crumble and the grizzly is gonna run right over me. I kind of want to devote a little of my energy to something else right now, be it work or play, but I know I can't. This weak ass door just won't hold if I'm not leaning into with ALL my energy.
But that's why I'm here. No one can hold the door closed for me, but everybody is reminding me that I CAN hold it if I don't give up. I'm being reminded why I closed the door in the first place and why I'm not just letting the grizzly back in. I've got people who know a little something about this situation. They're telling me how to adjust my stance so my strength will hold on a little better, a little longer. They keep asking me to promise I'll keep all my weight into the door, and they keep promising me they'll do the same with their own.
So that's where I'm at. Yeah, my door's closed, but it's a stupid ass corregated cardboard flap. What I'm hoping is that down the line, through this process, I'll learn how to reinforce my door a little bit, maybe build some kind of latch or something. Maybe someday it'll be strong enough I won't have to lean on it all day. Maybe I'll be able to take a couple steps back. Maybe take a load off with a glass of iced tea and shotgun across my lap just in case. Maybe that's what having the door closed means. For now, I guess I'll just lower my shoulder check my footing and grit my teeth.
-
if absolutely necessary I'll throw some coffee grounds in my bottom lip to get past a crave, but seeds or toothpicks have done me pretty well so far.
-
I should have some smokey mountain in the mailbox when I get home. Tool ... why no fakie, just out of curiosity?
Oh, and that is Loot's opinion on the subject, and his opinion is usually a valuable one. That said, many people (myself included) thing fake is a valuable tool early on, and some even longer. It has no addictive drugs in it, making it a "habit" which is very different than and "addiction."
In my opinion, put anything you want in your mouth so long as it is drug free/nicotine free. If you're like me and some others, you'll lose the desire for the fakie naturally over time.
Those who don't feel that way feel that the fake is too close to the real thing and makes you think about/desire the real deal. If you feel that way, don't use the fakie, but it is really up to you and most believe it's fine either way.

Today is day 139. I rarely use fake anymore. You really do lose interest. I guess if you can do it without fake, that would be preferable, but I see no harm in doing it if it keeps the nic out of your gourd.
P.S. - Quite appropriate to ask this type of question here, but feel free to ask it in your quit group as well.

I used the fake stuff just as much as I used the real stuff.
I will say that if you can get by with seeds or gum you will be better off than the fake stuff.
I never agreed with these guys until I ran out of fake and had just as rough a time with cravings then as I did with the nicotine withdrawal. I would not use it if I had to do it all over.

TG is right. For LOOT, and LOOT only, if it looks like Copenhagen, tastes like Copenhagen, and it cost money like Copenhagen it is far too easy justify/rationalize Copenhagen. You'll run out and no store close to you will have. Then your demons will really fuck with you. Why put yourself in that position?
You will deal with the oral fixation at some point. Get it over with up front, ILO. Breaking the habit of having something in your lips 7 hours per day is harder to do than getting rid of the nic. IT took LOOT 90 days. 90 days and you've cut your expenses to a couple $2 bags of seed per week. You can find seed in any C-store in a pinch (pun intended).
This is simply one guys opinion. LOOT knows LOOT....LOOT could not have quit with fakie. YMMV.
-

PS. There is absoLOOTly nothing wrong with this philosophy. Just wrong for LOOT. You do what you have to do to stay nic free. In the end, yes, the other shit will fade away. Just an matter of how long you want to take to do it.
We report...you decide.
Never again, for any reason.
-
I have had similar experience and can definitely relate to loot. BackOff just pissed me off because it wasn't what I was looking for...not what my addicted ass had to have at the time. Not only reason why I caved a couple years back - trust me, got lots of BS EXCUSES as to why my sorry ass didn't stay committed.
I'm only on day 5, but feel way better this time around. I didn't use any fake until yesterday (Day 4). I'm trying to only use it when I've got that crave or trigger that I need to push through. Today was a great test after lunch with a colleague. Of course he threw in a fat one before we jumped in the car....and so did I! Jake's Mint Chew of course
Sad but True, I'm an addict that will have to put on my suit of armor daily. For now, the fake will continue to be a small part of that suit.
-
Peyton there is going to be HELL DAYS in this endeavor , but believe me it will get better the longer you kick her in the ass! The nic bitch aims to dominate you back in to her nest of addiction, with a lot of tricks up her sleeve. Adversities is one of the worst, but just remember that there is nothing worse than being addicted again to the shit that s hell to quit! it's a roller coaster...and I hate roller coasters...but I love the feeling of a smooth lip and healthy body.
it'll suck, then be awesome, then suck again. hang in there, post your roll and quit, one day at a time.
i promise you'll sleep and poop like normal, someday.

Guys,
Headed to lake house for weekend. No internet. Cant post roll sunday or monday morning. Maybe I can get the cell number of one or two vets ... I'll text you my roll call and maybe you can put it up for me?
How do you usually handle this? Thanks.
-
Peyton,
Check your inbox. I also strongly suggest you get some numbers from some of the quitters in your HOF class. You will need them as you go through your quit.
STAY QUIT

Peyton- Check your inbox. Need anything let me know. Peace

Check your Inbox brother! Use it if you need to, WORD!

When you open my PM, you will have my number. By accepting my number, you are agreeing that I will get a call from you asking permission to cave, (PRIOR TO DOING ANYTHING STUPID). And no, it doesn't count as permission if you can't get through. Permission is only available live.
Oh, and you have to get permission from everyone in your group as well.
Stay quit.
