Title: kick the can first day
Post by: Thunderbird08 on September 25, 2015, 03:36:00 PM
hello everyone
i am proud to say i no longer have the desire to make excuses as to why i can't quit now.

first off, i'll be 40 in January and i made a vow this past year to work towards getting myself into the best shape of my life by that time. i can't dip and think i'm doing myself any good. secondly, dipping and drinking have been my version of love and marriage for the past twenty years and i know i can't get in the best shape of my life drinking. So it's a double dip for me, pardon the pun.

i started dipping on the golf course when i was 15/16 years old. i didn't like the swisher sweets my golf buddies would smoke and felt somewhat left out so i decided to try Skoal. then Kodiak. then finally decided Copenhagen Snuff was the stuff for me. my use was only very casual but i was hooked. soon i began to look forward to playing golf with my friends because it was the time of the week that i would get a good pinch.

when i went away to college i began dipping all the time. that cemented my routine of throwing one in whenever i would drive to work or to the store or anywhere. that time cemented my routine of having a pinch in my lip whenever i felt like having a few beers. soon i was dipping at work and using Cope all the time.

after i married my wife, i settled down quite a bit and even quit for several months at a time but i would always get that hankering - usually when having a few beers while watching the game or during some other event and then i was back to dipping to and from work, while doing yardwork, etc...

'i can quit anytime' is what i would always tell myself. and then the Styx lyrics 'you're fooling yourself if you don't believe it' would echo through my head and i would laugh it off. now, i have enrolled in a nicotine cessation program through my job and actually became a member of KTC instead of just passing by the website several times over the past couple years.

i'm excited to take this step and join the fight! i have three cans of Cope in my truck which will be discarded when i leave the office today. i have followed KTC on twitter and i'm looking forward to getting feedback from others in this same situation and reciprocating with my own encouragement. we don't have to do it alone!

Welcome to Quit.

A couple thoughts:

1. Flush the contents of those cans down the nearest toilet, "discard" seems to easy to reverse.

2. Get the the January 2016 quit group and post roll. Lots of quitters there waiting to support you.

3. Repeat that promise not to use nicotine for one day tomorrow morning when you wake. Then again every damn day.

Simple system, though quitting will be hard. You can quit with us, we will quit with you.

You have come to the right place Thunderbird08. There are a lot of bad ass quitters in line to help support you as was stated in the last post. All you have to do is make your daily promise.

Dump that shit ASAP. If you just toss it in the trash, it is way to easy to dig the cans back out. The January quit group is going to be your new best friend!!

Take care brother!

Thunderbird you made the right choice coming here to quit. My tobacco cessation program at work was a joke. Here its easy. Quit cold turkey, post roll every day and promise not to use nicotine. Repeat the next day. Embrace the suck cause the next few days are going to. Get some fake, gum, candy whatever to get you through. Drink lots of water, exercise a lot, read all of the stuff on here and go into chat. There are plenty of people on here ready to help get you through this. I am proud to quit with you today

Hey Thunderbird!

Congratulations on a great decision. You're absolutely right that you can't be the healthiest version of yourself with a mouthful of cancerous garbage.

I only have one question though. You mentioned a cessation program at work. They're not going to have you use "nicotine replacement" are they? Just a question, as cessation can mean gradually weaning depending on what the program is. I just want to be certain you're quitting cold turkey, as that is the only method we accept, and in the end, a step even a person "cutting down" has to take eventually.

Let us know, and again, congratulations on a wise move!

the cessation program at work is only supposed to be four phone calls with a 'therapist' or something. it sounds like a joke. our HR guy even said theres no way they're gonna know if you even quit unless you test positive for nicotine again next year.

cold turkey is my method - no fake, gum... ...well, i have been known to have a mouthful of sunflower seeds or in-the-shell peanuts.

and to all - i appreciate the support. it has reinforced my commitment to the quit.

i am proud to quit with you all!
