Well...this is it. Just threw away the rest of my can and announced to my wife and daughter that I was no longer a dipper. And I'm scared as hell...
A little about me. My name is Matt, I'm 44 years old and have been an addict since age 13. I actually went nic free from ages 22-36. Thought I was free from the damn stuff until I started a new job and found a new buddy that re-introduced me to the dip.
Oh yeah, I have a 16 year old son with severe autism that ironically enough just interrupted me from finishing this post for the last hour by throwing a major tantrum. Ugghhh...this is gonna be a bitch.
In my spare time, I enjoy playing bass guitar and have been lucky enough to play a few gigs each year with friends. I wouldn't really call us a band, but it's as close as one can get I suppose.
I'm thankful that I found this site and am confident you guys can get me through this. I'm going to try to post on roll call tomorrow morning if I can figure it out.
I have my arsenal of fake dip ready for tomorrow, so here goes the journey that will change my life for the better.

Congrats on a great decision Matt, welcome to KTC!
Post roll -- as long as you are on roll it doesn't have to be perfect. That skill will improve over time.
Get to know the quitters in your group, send any quit rage here. Your family deserves the new "quit" you, but not the nicotine withdrawal.
Drink lots of water, exercise, read this site for knowledge and inspiration.

Welcome, Matty!
Let's do this.
Roll is a bunch easier then the alternative.

Hi Matt.
I'm close to your age, I also have two sons with autism, one severe, one not as much. I hadn't been quit from dip for more than 30 days prior to joining this site.
My advice to you is to post roll every day, as soon in the morning as you can, and get involved with the community. That's your best chance for a successful quit.
Is ABA therapy an option for your son? Both of mine get 35 hours per week. We haven't had an hour-long melt down in a long time. Things aren't perfect, but much better.

Hey RDB,
Thanks for the advice. We're trying to get my son into ABA right now, it seems like there are a limited number of providers. He started these meltdowns over the last 8 months or so and his behaviors got real bad real quick. We're trying to find which combo of drugs works best also.
-
For our 7yo - the more severe - Risperdal, intuniv, and a small dab of paxil.
Our 6yo is on chlonidine, abilify, and vyvance.
Finding the right combo is key, and it takes a while.

Congrats on the quit! Great first step on making this quit happen! Daily or even moment by moment is how we make it through. You have a lot on your plate. Don't think of it as 'going to be a bitch' but more of a challenge you can learn from and grow. with that aside. get yourself plenty of water. Some fruit juice. Then, more water. This will help your mood and plenty of other side effects. Powerade and Gatorade are great especially if you are a coffee drinker. Get some fellow quitters numbers and keep on keepin on. Post roll daily as your promise to yourself and to your fellow quitters.

Welcome Matty. Good intro. You know what? I bet everyone was scared as hell to quit. I was. Its a lie though. You don't need it. You know that. You can do this.
-
You and my husband have the same quit date! Today! He just joined, look for his intro, he is 'Spit Cup' He is also a musician and our son has Aspergers. I wish you well with your quit.

Well...Made it through the first day and no homicides :)
Thanks for all the encouragement and advice!

Yep. Ryan is on Risperdal, Guanfacine, Clonazapham, and Trazodone (to help him fall asleep). We had it all figured out until just after last summer, then all hell broke loose. He started getting violent towards us and breaking things. We have a great support group for that, too. I'm hoping he eventually outgrows some of the behaviors.
How did you manage to get all that ABA therapy? It's hard for us just to get a few hours a week for him.

Matt
One
Day
at a
Time
Repeat.
Don't try to take on more than one day. Some times, a friggin day is too much. Some times, you have to just get through the next 15 minutes, or the next minute. God won't give you more than you can handle. You can handle this.

I live in Michigan. It helps when your Lt. Governor has a child with autism. About 3 years ago, a law passed in the state that insurance companies were mandated to pay for ABA therapy. There are 3 or 4 approved hospitals in the state that can make the autism diagnosis. That way, parents can't just go to any quack Dr. and get free therapy.
Getting the diagnoses took longer than it should, very frustrating. There is a new ABA provider in my very small town that opened during all of this. The next closest clinic is about an hour away.
The boys are there from 8-3 five days a week. The staff is absolutely great.
Their behaviors are a lot better, but there are still breakdowns. Much more manageable than before.

Man I wish we had that in Texas. Ryan is on a medicaid waiver program and can get the services for free, but there's so few providers that are in the system, even in the Austin area. So we'er on a six month wait list and will probably get 3 or 4 hours a week once we get to the top of the list.

Great HOF speech Matt. It's amazing that, though, each of our stories are different there is a thread of commonality in them all. I also tried to have that talk with my daughters about Nicotine and the importance of staying away from it in any form. I told them that most everyone who started cigarettes or tobacco, wishes they hadn't but can quit. My 7 year old asked "why can't you just quit?" Yes, humbling, and hard to admit to her that I'm not invincible.
Congrats on your quit brother
Proud to be quit with you and July
