Hello, my name is Erik and I am 35 years old. I have been dipping since I was about thirteen and was steeling tins from my older brother. I told my wife I quit when we got married but still dipped at work and claimed I only did it when hunting or fishing. I just got tired of hiding it and told her. She of course blew up but I was thinking of quitting anyways. So here I am posting and dipping this terrible fake chew, smokey mountain. Anyone know of anything that tastes similar to the griz but tobacco free?

A bucket of assholes.
There are several kinds of fake. Most wal marts carry some. Try till you find one you like. I could never use them though. To much like the real thing for me. but what ever it takes to keep nic out of your mouth.
Lots of seeds, gum, atomic fireballs and coffee straws helped me.

Boy, that's a familiar tune. Right on for making today the first day of your nic-free life. You're in good company, and I'm right there with you at barely 5 days in.
Can't speak too much to the fake chews out there other than the reviews posted elsewhere on the site. I've tried both Smokey Mountain and Hooch. The SM was decent and the hooch tasted like ground weeds.

Maybe it's just me but I feel a lot of "meh" in this post.
I need to feel some more resolve here bro... Not just a knee jerk reaction from your wife's blow up followed by a "I was thinking about quitting anyway" mindset.
You need to make this decision for you and... Own it. If you can do that nothing will stop you.

I see you posted a day 1 and you are reaching out. Gooo job. Coffee or fake dip worked for me. I grew tired of it after a while. You get bored of things that don't have nic in it. It is then you realize, you are not addicted to dipping, you are addicted to nicotine.
Any how. I am glad you are here and I am available for any assistance you might need. There are a ton of other guys that are happy to help as well. Just keep posting, reading and staying involved and the days of quit will accumulate.

Honestly, that shit in the can is just as nasty.
It just happens to carry nicotine in it so your brain associates it as a fond taste. Addicts like us didn't ruin our mouths and smokers didn't enjoy inhaling camp fires because it was appealing. No...we did it for the drug. SMS is a placebo to curb that empty lip feeling. Nothing more. You aren't addicted to the habit (dipping).
I'd try seeds, maybe break a tea bag. Fireballs are great substitues, as our cherries and peaches (especially now). Feel free to stuff your lip with anything you want to, but stay quit man. If you are looking for other brands of herbal stuff, chewie reviews them all the time (http://blog.killthecan.org/reviews/). In fact, American Gladiator Hawk will be in here August 12th with the owner of Hooch. They usually give a pretty good deal for quitters here.

Erik, get in here and start drinking the KTC koolaid. Mark some friends, exchange some numbers and start reading up.
The ride for the next couple of days is gonna suck, so get ready and hold on tight to this website and forum. If you need a number, shoot me a p.m.

Rifle man-line the secs, minutes, hours up and KNOCK em down!! And in between read and interact.

Agree with Apple Jack. It may not have been what you were intending when you wrote your intro, but I got the feel from this post that if your wife was ok with you being a dipper you'd have one in right now. Prove us wrong, but to succeed you really need to be fed up with being an addict and want to take back control in your life. Quitting is such a hard process that you can't be luke warm about your desire to be quit. Good luck Rifleman.
-
No you are entirely correct, if it wasn't for my wife I would have a big ol dip in right now. Quitting is just easier than dealing with her right now.

Eventually she will forgive you or say "do what you want"...is this what you want?
You dipped for You so Quit for You...you are worth it, whether or not you believe it.
Slavery is no way to live...freedom is yours if you rrrrreeeeeaaalllly want it. It is hard work but gets easier over time.
You can do it..one day at a time.

Don't half-ass this.
There are guys seriously fighting for their lives... Don't piss on their effort by being nonchalant about this. It boils down to this... Do you wanna quit and actually taste real freedom or... Do you just wanna get your wife off your back?
Go all in bro... You will not regret it.

Wow, so when she backs off you are going back to the can? This is a site for people that believe in "Never Again for any Reason" or NAFAR, so if you are just taking a break for your wife or waiting until the next guys night out to dip, please do it elsewhere - or convince us that you are quitting for yourself as well.

I've read this script a million times and it always goes something like this:
Act I: You quit because you finally got sick of her berating your ass about it.
Act II: You stay quit for a few days to a few weeks, but with each successive crave that you encounter and fight off, your resentment towards her grows for "making" you do this.
Act III: She does or says something one day that just pisses you off, so you decide to cave and dip again just to "spite" her.
You've gotta want this, dude. Really, really want this for yourself above all else.
Am I gutting through this quit with you, or your wife?

Rifleman...
a.) what these guys are saying is 100% true. Trying to get your wife to "shut up" will not be a sufficient motive to keep you quit.
You WILL resent her.
You WILL deceive her.
It WILL effect other areas of your relationship.
BUT...
b.) if you ARE still quit... know that you are in the worst days of the quitting stage. And that, "if it wasn't for my wife I would have a big ol dip in right now" may NOT be true.
It may be the lack of nicotine - or "Nicki, the lying vindictive vixen whore", as I like to call it - that's producing this anger and looking for targets. But your wife is NOT the enemy. Nicotine is. Remember that. It WILL (like every addiction) drive itself between you and those who love you.
For me, on Day 2... I seriously considered leaving my wife and children - because if I didn't have them, no one would care what I was doing to myself with this garbage - and then I can do it in peace!? True story. That's not remotely rational. But it's how nicotine wrecks your mind.
Now, I'm on Day 12. It's only 10 days more - but it seems like a lifetime away.
You CAN do it.
It IS worth it.
My advice... stick with it. Fight thru it.
Make the determination right now... "Nicotine is my enemy. I'm quitting it for MY sake. Anyone who also wants me to quit is my friend."
(By the way... fake dip is total shit. In my experience, it will only drive you back to real dip because it lacks the key ingredient of nicotine. For a replacement to satisfy the oral fixation... I'd suggest sunflower seeds, coffee grinds, or gum. Those have worked for me.)

That's more opinion based, fake works for some and it doesn't work for others. It worked for me for the week I used it. Seeds, gum, and other things may not work for some, but fake may be too close to the real thing for some.
I'd say there is no harm in trying the fake (this is exactly what it's made for) but if it being too close to the real thing worries you then try a different aveune. PM a vet, PM me, PM anyone to ask for tips or what they used to get through the cravings... that's what we're here for.
P.S. I used a lot of green tea bags. Helped me a lot.

Erik,
I can't really top the advice that you have been given by some of my quit brothers but I can tell you that there are several alternatives to chew that you can use. I used Hooch as it most closely felt and tasted like the Copenhagen that I stuffed in between my cheek and gum for 24 years. Here is a list of alternatives and the links Smokeless Alternatives (http://www.killthecan.org/your-quit/smokeless-alternatives/). However, without another weed-like substitute cinnamon candies work great (hot tamales, red hots, atomic fireballs, etc.).
Drink lots of water, over hydrate; if you can pass a urinal without having to go you are nto taking in enough water.
Read all that this site has to offer, show you wife, include her but again make this quit all about you. You need to read your "addict babble" and learn to identify it as such, "I am quitting for my wife" means that there is an excuse or a place to put blame when it fails. Unless your wife made you dip at gunpoint then quit for you.
Meet some fellow quitters and quit being weak.

Rifle,
I think you need to assess your commitment level. This requires full commitment to achieve success. Maybe you need some education. Are you willing to spend a little time reading up on nicotine addiction and the dangers of continued tobacco use? Please let us know if you would like to read some stuff. I'd be happy to share some articles with you. I feel like you need to see tobacco as the enemy that it is, and maybe you should spend some time understanding the ill effects nicotine/tobacco.
This is a fight for our lives. We want you with us. But you need to want to be with us.

All right now, settle down everyone. Let me be perfectly clear on one thing. I QUIT, period. Now that being said it doesn't mean I have to like it.
I had seen the writing on the wall for some time now. The rising price of chew, health concerns, having to hide my habit... etc.. But I wasn't ready yet. I was still perfectly happy ignoring all the reasons to quit. I knew I would have to quit eventually but felt cheated out of those last few days, months of chewy goodness.

I'm worried about you. I want you to like being quit. Maybe I'm dumb.
Can't force someone to like being quit. Can only hope you might learn to like it.

No need for anyone to settle down. We are all just trying to make sure you see the BIG PICTURE. You continue to refer to your "habit" tobacco is an addiction not a habit. I would love to see you prove us all wrong but first you must understand we know addict babble when we see it; hell, we all used to speak it.
-

This ^^^ is "Addict Speak 101".
You're still owned and heading down the road to failure. You have GOT to 180 that thought process if you want to succeed. Personally... I don't think you do. I don't feel it in you.
However...
I'd love for you to prove me wrong.

Rifle, we are on your side, but until you have your first "ah ha" moment being quit, I don't see where we can help you. I hated being quit to until day 5, where I woke up and the fog was greatly diminished. Somewhere in the first 30 days I had a situation where in the past I had to have a chew, and to was always difficult to have one...........and guess what, I was quit, and didn't have to worry about it. The freedom is there for you to take, you just have to want it.
-
Rifleman I see you still in here posting. Way to prove me and everyone else wrong by sticking with this. I will definitely quit with you today.

Exercising seems to help, I have been switching back and forth from running and biking each day. The fake dip has already lost some of it's appeal. going to try the flavored seeds and mints.

Good job rifle, remember as I mentioned in chat, make sure you drink enough water, especially if you are exercising as need to replace that as well as using it to help flush out your system.
and yes try the mints, seeds and all. keep mixing it up as that in the end will help with the oral fixation part. But remember there is no turning back
You will do this and I will stand right beside you

-exercise will reduce both the frequency and intensity of cravings.
- watch your caffeine - nicotine counter acts caffeine
I wound up chewing the Oregon mint cinnamon flavor, it was kinda like a candy but had a little burn in the lip. The oral fixation will take care of itself so don't fixate on it.
Stay the course Rifle, you got this

Holy shit man, this is no joke. I've been doing OK so far but really hit a wall today. Stressed to the max, and craving like crazy. I felt fine this morning and almost breezed through the first few days. But at about 11am today the "fog" you all talk about dropped on my ass.
Didn't cave and didn't come close to that either but damn. Here's what I think contributed to it: no exercise today, stress, body finally realizing it's not getting any more nic ever.

Rifleman, if you read other intros, especially from the guys who have been around, you'll see we all have been where you are...the good news is it doesn't last for long (usually no more than 2 weeks) Unfortunately the only advice anyone can give is gut it out. It is definitely do-able. Get after it.

Early in my quit when a craving came on strong I would do a simple exercise, no matter where I was (push-ups, burpees, a small jog or brisk walk). I did them until I didn't have the craving anymore. I also consumed mass quantities of water, I could literally not pass a restroom without having to piss.
The cravings you are getting right now are mental, physical and chemical; caused by years of self-mutilation and mental manipulation. You can do this, the early days are the worst, keep on powering through them and be constantly vigil.

I gotta admit when I came here on day one it was a knee jerk reaction to a fight with my wife. The only reason I even knew about the site was cause of mn_ben.
That being said and being on day 12 now I can say without any question, I QUIT! I wasn't much of a believer to begin with but I will be damned if I will cave on you guys now or ever. The cravings are still there but I own this now and it is my decision to stay quit.

Hey MN_Ben - Now that aRifleman2 has decided that 30 days is "enough" I'm curious to know what your thoughts are on that. You think that's a wise move?

Many a good quitter has had the misfortune of living through the suck again only because they couldn't commit to the daily posting. Hell it has worked for me thus far and I happen to think that the 2.3 seconds it take me to post roll form a phone or the 1.8 seconds from a computer daily is worth the rest of my life. Not to mention saving $5 to 7 a day is also a nice perk too. I choose life today, hope you come around arifleman...

From KTC's mission statement:
"We are here to provide a forum where your questions will get answered, where your fears will be dispelled, and your anxiety will be dissipated. We will offer any help that we can. We will help YOU quit the way you need to quit.
We realize that there are a variety of ways to be successful quitting chew. We will NOT tell you that one way is better than another, but we will tell you our experience and what has worked for us."
Perhaps this excerpt from KTC's mission statement explains my exit from roll but not the site. I've moved my posts here as to not "poison" your quit as you have put it.
You were all so busy pissing on my shoes you failed to see any reasoning behind my departure. I tried it your way and it wasn't for me. I tried to be civil when I left and your reaction is one, but not the only reason for leaving. This Forum is to closed for my tastes, seeing someone's name and a number next to it doesn't really tell me anything about you or your quit. Having to post in the same spot as roll makes threads hard to find and follow, and makes posting roll harder as well. Why not have two places to post for each quit group? One for roll and one for discussions.
Also I wasn't really down with giving my phone number out to a bunch of strangers. I told a few people about this site and they all asked me the same question, what is this site all about? All they took away from it was posting roll and found little else. I have to say I agree with them.
Now you might ask why do I care, or why should we give a fuck you left. I said I was done with roll and you guys closed that door. For everyone of you that blasted me on the board I got at least that many PM's saying stay strong and quit your way.
As good as this site is roll shouldn't be the one and only thing worthwhile on it. That's just my opinion, take it or leave it doesn't matter. But not being able to take constructive criticism without flaming out doesn't help your quit group or the site.

I give it a 34 Dick, it's diction was good, but the message was weak, and it was hard to dance to. I hope the band stays quit, but I'd let Chubby Checker do the twist on my backside for flapjack money before I adhere to that philosphy.

The vets here will tell you that plenty others have tried to quit on their own and have failed. You are just following in their footsteps.

To each their own, if you are so quit that you don't need a number next to your name good for you. I myself learned early on that it was not merely my name with a number next to it. What I learned is that each day I posted roil I was making a promise to myself, I was making a promise to anyone who read my name and number, I was making a promise to my fellow quitters. Please also note that my fellow quitters were not merely the guys in October 2013 HOF Group but rather any quitter on KTC because your quit group is KTC as a whole not merely your initial quit group.
Granted each and every quitter has to choose to take what works and leave the rest so as I have said before you are a big boy and can make your own choices. I hope your choice works out for you in the long run as I really want to see people quit I don't care how you do it just do it.
To each their own, but please also notice that there are several other items on on the KTC site that go well beyond just the minimums of posting roll daily when you get bored.

So KTC isn't your cup of tea. Who gives a shit? You announced shortly after day 30 that you were ready to move on, and you did. Why the sudden need for a status update some 40-50 days later?
The whole constructive criticism thing goes both ways, bub. If you think we could do things better, or at least be more multi-faceted and inclusive, then you need to be here. You need to be the change. We're not going to switch from earl grey to chamomile on your say-so. Other than that, there isn't much else to discuss, is there?
In any case, I do sincerely applaud you for staying quit during your time away. I'm not sure I would have been able to do the same over that span of time, sans-KTC. But that's me. We're here to talk about you.

Agree with Tuco. Clearly you have quit your own way from the start. I get that, and I really feel whatever you do that keeps dip out of your mouth is the right thing, but why still lurk around? Seems like you want to be involved. Why don't you?

Why bother joining a site about brotherhood and not participate? And why after you choose not to participate, bother to come back on your Day 100? From one attention whore to another attention whore, well done.

Douche move. I'm sorry I spent anytime trying to help your quit.

Really? this sounds much more like a petty douche move to me.
