My name is Ron and I have been a nicotine addict since 1993. I am 46 years old, married and have a 12 year old son. I am a Accounting Professional. I grew up in a rural area in Arizona where I tried dip for the first time in High School. I only did it once and moved on. Fast forward a few years to college Army ROTC. A couple of guys were using and we were out on a field training exercise and the guys told me that it helped them stay awake which sounded good to me since we were only getting a few hours of sleep a night. Big mistake. That is when I started having a dip in every waking moment. I graduated college and starting my accounting career as a young CPA. Did my best to hide it from co-workers, bosses,, ect. Having a fat dip in your mouth doesn't help you gain respect in the business world.
I thought I would quit then, a few years later I got married, I thought I would quit then, I had a son, I thought I would quit then, I would stop a few hours, cave, lie, sneak around, chew at work, sneak around some more.
It is a nasty disgusting habit that kills people. I don't want to lose half of my face and look like a God Damn FREAK. I don't want to be responsible for setting the wrong example for my son. I am ready to quit. I have been quit for 2 weeks. I quit with each and everyone of you. I am here for you and you are here for me. Together we can do this.

Great choice. And holy crap, that is a great intro!!! No hoping or trying with this guy. Succinct, to the point, right motivation...A+ in my book.
You've gotten great advice so far. Just read all you can. Two weeks is a great start, too. But it is just the begging of your new nic-free life!!!
Stay strong and stay quit, brother.
PS - love the "spread sheet" comment!!!

Ron, you tha man Ron. Privilege to be quitting with you bro. And thank you for all your hard work serving the December HOF.

Good stuff.
I'm glad you're here brother. Spread your network of accountability WIDE!! Be a part of this effort to free people from this awful drug. You need another number... PM me bro. I'll help any way I can.

A little over 3 weeks down and the time sure has gone by fast. The DEC 13 group is really coming together. I have been able to exchange contacts numbers with my brothers. It feels so awesome to be free of nicotine and all of the other cancer poisons inside smokeless tobacco. I look at our quit groups spreadsheet and all I see is WIN. People are taking back control over their lives. They are no longer a servant to a master. They are in control of their own destiny. Before I came to KTC, I would be lucky if I could go 20 minutes without freaking out without nicotine. KTC has changed all of that. The method works.
-
Glad to see it's working for you Ron, it's sure working for me! Nothing like the camaraderie, brotherhood, fellowship to pull a guy through.
-
Ron I just wanted to say well done so far! I love seeing people who come here to quit! Way to drink the kool-aide and kick nics ass!

Thanks Guys. Some days are great. Some days are so so. I'm on day 26. I lost my job on day 10 at a fortune 500 company. Normally I would stick about 5 cans of chew in my mouth when something like that happens. I didn't this time. I don't why I have the strength now, when for so long I thought I was the weakest person on the planet. The only thing different from the 1000 times I tried on my own was a group of guys giving their promise every am. For that I give KTC all the credit.

Sorry to hear about your job, that blows balls.
But remember, all things happen for a reason and that 5 cans of death in your cake hole will not get your job back.
Way to be strong!!!
KTC is great no doubt, but you deserve the credit. You're the one beating addiction in the face of adversity.
That's some lead pipe type shit right there. Keep it up!!!

Keep doing it ODAAT...When You're quit, better days and things are coming! I promise!
Keep posting roll and keep your word quit brother and you'll see your life change for the better.
Like my brother Diesel says, "it happens for a reason".
Stay in perspective and you'll see the reason and the rewards.
Cheers!

There will be other jobs. I'm not worried. Things happen for a reason. I believe that I need this time to focus on myself and put more distance between now and day 1. You guys say it gets better the longer you stay quit. I keep telling myself that each day!
When it comes time to start a new job I'm not going be sneaking around the office with a chew in my lip.

oh it will get better, just keep doing what you are.
and besides, it is much better now that you are quit as instead of hiding at the office you can walk tall knowing you got a great big pair down below....
keep up the great work....Be Strong...Be Quit

Congrats for all your hard work in staying quit through adversity of losing a job! 2 quitter intros were recommended to me, KC_Guy who lost his job during his first 100 Erussell who had his wife take off with his daughter. Just as you're not alone in your quit here, you're also not alone in facing adversity. Be proud of how far you've come inspite of difficulty.

I will have to check out those threads. It helps me to know that no matter what I am feeling at the moment someone somewhere is fighting a crave 100x more potent than what I am feeling.

Keep concentrating on today and soon the days will have added up and you'll be amazed at how you accomplished such a kick ass quit. Like others have said the group accountability is important, but the personal commitment is what will lead to your freedom. Believe me that freedom
Is something you will cherish. Keep kicking ass!

Are there harmful chemicals in smokeless tobacco?
Yes. There is no safe form of tobacco. At least 28 chemicals in smokeless tobacco have been found to cause cancer (1). The most harmful chemicals in smokeless tobacco are tobacco-specific nitrosamines, which are formed during the growing, curing, fermenting, and aging of tobacco. The level of tobacco-specific nitrosamines varies by product. Scientists have found that the nitrosamine level is directly related to the risk of cancer.
In addition to a variety of nitrosamines, other cancer-causing substances in smokeless tobacco include polonium–210 (a radioactive element found in tobacco fertilizer) and polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (also known as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons) (1).

There are reasons chew is particularly addicting as well as toxic, its not an accident. Yet another reason to dislike UST and all big tobacco industry. And another reason to make sure that is a thing of your past only.
Keep the quit coming Ron.

Thanks for the reminder Ron! You are doing some good things in your quit... one of which is to get to know your enemy. That enemy is evil and we don't need it in our life today. Quit on my friend!

Evilology
Dear Pre HOF-December 2013,
Accountability
Get a spreadsheet going (hint: vets are already starting one for your group. Find it.). Take a leading role in this group. Maintain the spreadsheet for the group. Why? You will see who is posting roll and your name best be on it. You will see who is missing from Roll and can drag them back. Not posting roll once leads to not posting roll again, then a few days in a string, then you forget why you were here reading this today. Make your presence known in this group and in others. The more people you know, the better chance that someone comes looking for you if your name isnÂ’t on Roll. Send a PM to those that post as supporters in your group. Offer your number and I bet you get one in return. Make sure that you know everybodyÂ’s real name and phone number in your group; this is your immediate family. Lean on each other. Be accountable to each other.
Brotherhood
There are quitters here from every walk of life. Different races, religions, professions, ethnicity, sexual orientation, etc. But we are all here to quit and to remain quit. We are a dysfunctional family at times. You will see kindness, concern, sorrow, hate, fear, jealousy, rage, and dozens of other emotions spewed out among these boards. The one constant is continuing the quit. No matter what is said and or done, it is always about the quit. I may not like something that you say. I will likely offend you at some point and maybe even hurt your feelings and make you cry. But in the end if your name is on Roll, I will do whatever I can to assist you and make sure that you keep your word to remain quit today, even when you don’t want to. If your name is on Roll you have 16,000+ brothers and sisters at your side. You are not alone.
Success
Post Roll early. If you canÂ’t get onto KTC to do it yourself then call or text it in to somebody. There is no valid reason to not post Roll every day. Once your name is on Roll you need to honor your word for the rest of the day. That wonÂ’t be easy at times but there are many, many tools here for you to use to kill every single crave as they appear. When you kill one crave use that victory as fuel to slay the next one. If killing craves becomes difficult on your own, get on KTC and read Introductions (http://forum.killthecan.org/index.php?showforum=25), or HOF Speeches (http://forum.killthecan.org/index.php?showtopic=90). Post in the URGENT: NEED HELP NOW (http://forum.killthecan.org/index.php?showtopic=267) thread. Get into Live Chat (http://chat.killthecan.org/). Call or text a brother from your group or a vet and explain why you need help. There is never a reason to justify ever using again. We are quit.
Post Roll. Honor your word. Use the tools. Success today. Repeat tomorrow.
And....Discuss!

Just wanted to save these couple of paragraphs of wisdom that define what this site is really all about.

Good summary of what this site is all about what makes it a success for the guys who are willing to put into it for sure!

Nice half a hall today. Its ODAAT still, but well done. Quit with you.

Typical day in the life (specifically today) of a Jackwagin (me):
1. Wake up and Post Roll - non debatable
2. Scan the Roll to see who is quit so far today.
3. Pretend to do work at work but really just read stuff on KTC, call out Dbags where needed, help others where i can, spread my name across KTC like a social disease at the truck stop, and laugh at the banter in various posts in our thread that have nothing to do with Quit.
4. Revisit Roll and compare it to the spreadsheet. If someone is missing shoot them a text asking why they are not on roll if they are indeed quit.
5. When text is received stating said Jackwagin is indeed quit today, post roll for brother-in-quit.
6. Bask in Jackwagin awesomeness.
7. Repeat tomorrow.
Brotherhood
Accountability
Success
That's the way we roll in Jan. 13'.
I like to save some posts in my intro as an example to refer too. I'm just weird like that.

Applejack isn't weird. What is weird about a cereal? Well I guess if you where a cereal killer it would be weird. Or if your a grown man trying to be cereal........ oh.....uh... Maybe he is a little weird..... Well I still love that bad ass quitter just the same lmao.
Man I think it is awesome for you update your intro and bump stuff up. Especially something as bad ass as Evil's words above, he is so inspiring. It is very important to remember the triumphs and the pains of your quit. You my friend are building an awesome foundation for your quit. I enjoy quitting with you! Erussell day 180

Repeat after me:
I will not make excuses anymore. I am an addict and I have used excuses to do or not do many things in my life. I am here to change my life.
Roll is my new job.
Roll is my new best friend.
Roll is my new lifeline.
Roll will help me in times of Despair.
Roll will keep me from repeating my past destruction.
Roll will teach me character and integrity I didn't know I had.
Roll is my ticket to Freedom.
Roll will save my life.
Roll is my key to quit.

I choose to post roll every day. It's as normal as taking a dump or having a cup of coffee. Why do I continue to do this well into my 4th year of freedom from this addiction? For you newbies out there, I'll tell you.
1. I do it for myself. I know from being around this site for so long that posting roll is the cornerstone of a person's quit. It is EVERYTHING in the beginning and is a sense of comfort as you progress years into your quit. I'm 99.99% sure that I will NEVER, EVER use tobacco again. I keep coming back for that 0.01% because I know if I make that simple promise each day then I can and will remain free. I know you guys will hold me accountable. The only people that I know that cave are people that quit posting roll. It is that simple. I won't be one of those people.
2. Pay it back... you've heard the story a hundred times but i REALLY suffered in trying to quit this shit. I sincerely want to help someone else. I remember those days and how horrible they were. This site is the ONLY thing that made me successful in my quit. I OWE it something and that something is trying to be a very, very small piece of that amazing web of support and help.
3. Many of the closest friends that I have made in my life are in here.
Some of them I haven't even met in person. That sense of brotherhood is a big reason that I remain....
Whatever YOUR reasons for posting roll are I hope you continue to do it. In the early weeks/months of your quit it will be the MOST important thing you do each day. As you progress, I hope you see the value of continuing on. If not I'm sure I'll see you back in here with your tail between your legs as a caver and pure example of what happens when you quit posting roll. That one small gest of posting roll that takes less than a minute a day can and will be the breaking line of if some of you make it or not.
Don't take the chance. Post up....
My promise is here today in the form of a simple phrase:
TCOPE = 1757... today I promise not to use tobacco. One day at a time....
Some wise words from TCOPE to one of the new pre-HOF classes.

I have been using fake chew since day 1. It is expensive and doesn't make sense that I should be spending all that cash on it each month if I am not nicotine dependent. I have stocked up on atomic fireballs and cracked pepper sun flower seeds. I want to cut the cord for good. Might need some support over the next week.

Quitting the fake is a breeze. Need any help, we are here.

I just read your whole thread Ron. I don't think you'll have a problem dropping the fake dip.

Your right. I just need to have the mindset that failure is not an option. It certainly works for me everyday in my life and with my quit. I'm done with it!

Switch to seeds and gum if you have to!!! Gum still helps me at work!

Sounds like you have done a great job in your quit to this point. You have gained control on the addiction that held you as a slave.
Now take the second step, the oral fixation. This is definitely all mental as there is no chemical anymore holding you to the nicotine. So as Doc says, use seeds and trident (or fav) gum from time to time. I found out I love those more anyway. Grab some mint or cinnamon toothpicks. Love them too but damn I got to watch for splinters.
Just remember don't be too hard on yourself as you got this, and even the fake is not killing you anymore.
right with you my friend.

Five days in after quitting smokey mountain fake chew and I found out I wasted a bunch of money on atomic fireballs and seeds. Fact is I don't "need" nicotine and I don't "need" smokey mountain fake chew. I now understand I am 100% free and dependent on nothing other than myself. 3 days after quitting nicotine I was 100% free but I didn't believe it then. It's been one year and I don't need the real thing or the fake chew. Message to each of you still thinking you "need" the fake stuff. You don't. You just need to find out for yourself. It was all in my head. I just needed to get past the five days.

The oral fixation was a hard one for me to kick also, but one day I realized I didn't need it too, and my quit got easier after that. I still like to have a can of fake dip with me if I go into a situation where I might be tempted. QLF with you today.

Sam Shoemaker the founder of AA wrote this. A reminder that I need to step up the quit.
So I Stand Near the Door"
“I stand near the door.
I neither go too far in, nor stay too far out,
The door is the most important door in the world—
It is the door through which men walk when they find God.
ThereÂ’s no use my going way inside, and staying there,
When so many are still outside, and they, as much as I,
Crave to know where the door is.
And all that so many ever find
Is only the wall where a door ought to be.
They creep along the wall like blind men.
With outstretched, groping hands,
Feeling for a door, knowing there must be a door,
Yet they never find it . . .
So I stay near the door.
“The most tremendous thing in the world
Is for men to find that door—the door to God.
The most important thing any man can do
Is to take hold of one of those blind, groping hands,
And put it on the latch—the latch that only clicks
And opens to the manÂ’s own touch.
Men die outside that door, as starving beggars die
On cold nights in cruel cities in the dead of winter—
Die for want of what is within their grasp.
They live, on the other side of it—live because they have found it.
Nothing else matters compared to helping them find it,
And open it, and walk in, and find Him . . .
So I stand near the door.
“Go in, great saints, go all the way in—
Go way down into the cavernous cellars,
And way up into the spacious attics—
In a vast, roomy house, this house where God is.
Go into the deepest of hidden casements,
Of withdrawal, of silence, of sainthood.
Some must inhabit those inner rooms,
And know the depths and heights of God,
And call outside to the rest of us how wonderful it is.
Sometimes I take a deeper look in,
Sometimes venture a little farther;
But my place seems closer to the opening . . .
So I stand near the door.
“The people too far in do not see how near these are
To leaving—preoccupied with the wonder of it all.
Somebody must watch for those who have entered the door,
But would like to run away. So for them, too,
I stand near the door.
“I admire the people who go way in.
But I wish they would not forget how it was
Before they got in. Then they would be able to help
The people who have not even found the door,
Or the people who want to run away again from God.
You can go in too deeply, and stay in too long,
And forget the people outside the door.
As for me, I shall take my old accustomed place,
Near enough to God to hear Him, and know He is there,
But not so far from men as not to hear them,
And remember they are there too.
Where? Outside the door—
Thousands of them, millions of them.
But—more important for me—
One of them, two of them, ten of them,
Whose hands I am intended to put on the latch,
So I shall stay by the door and wait
For those who seek it.
‘I had rather be a door-keeper . . .’
So I stand near the door.”

Just bumping this up for the big 365 tomorrow. Congrats on an awesome year Ron!

Congrats on the year once again Ron!! I Appreciate your activity all over KTC, that's how a quit is done!!
-
It feels great to reach this 1 year mark. I took a little bit of time and reflected on the past year. There are a little over 15 of us left in the DEC 13 group. Almost every single guy posts roll EVERY day. We have a great group in DEC 13 and I have started to participate in the new DEC 14 group. That is where the action is and that is what helps me remember the dark days (Day 1-30) where my quit was sometimes one minute at a time and at times I was full of nic rage. LOL I look back and laugh but nicotine is some nasty powerful stuff. I am just thankful for everyone on KTC for my freedom.

Well I have almost 2 years of quit under my belt now but for the last four weeks have been dealing with divorce. My quit is stronger than ever but I can't wait until I feel better about the whole divorce thing. We were married for 17 years and have a 14 year old son. I am 48 and worried about the future. Will I find someone someday that I really love again? Just some random thoughts.

Ron kinda like your quit brother one day at a time. Life's to short to worry it away. Remember that 14 year old son is right there at a very vulnerable age , he will need his Dad to continue to show him the right way. Stay strong my friend and remember we're all here, some advice may help so keep putting it out here!Quit on!

You are a great man who has shown a lot of leadership here. Life sometimes brings changes that are hard to deal with, and painful. Pab is correct in that your son needs to to be a role model - and you need him too. Try to focus on that relationship and your future will be bright. You've got a young man to mold into a leader just like his dad.
I'm always here if you wanna talk or just shoot the shit. I'll pm you my number. Keep your chin up my friend.

Congrats on passing the 2 year mark, another few days will be 3/4 comma! Guessing you haven't had much room for celebrating the last little while, but hope it's all going alright

Hi,
I have been a nicotine addict for over 20 years. (Long-cut Skoal). I found this site yesterday at work and decided to quit, so this is Day 2 for me. I look forward to reading the information and learning from others who have been successful in quitting.
-Ron
Today, I celebrate 1500 days of freedom from nicotine. My favorite form of this drug was delivered via chewing tobacco. This addiction affects people of all walks of life, Doctors, nurses, executives, lawyers, CPAs, police officers, firemen, military officers and enlisted, college students, blue collar workers. You name it! I have come across it all. If you need help and want to quit. Check out this site. https://www.killthecan.org (https://www.killthecan.org)
HAHA !!!! Right?
