Title: Ready to Quit
Post by: ffemtchick on September 08, 2015, 02:00:00 AM
Hello all! I want to introduce myself...

My name is Michele, and today is going to be my last day as a tobacco user. I have been hooked on snus for around 3 years, which I know is not long compared to some of yall, but still. I started using snus when I realized that smoking and being a firefighter would not work. My lungs simply couldn't handle it. I still needed/wanted the nicotine fix so I transitioned to snus after deciding my husband's dip was not for me.

I am ready to quit for not only health reasons, but because my kids are starting to get old enough to ask questions, and the old made up answers aren't working anymore. Plus it isn't very ladylike. Lol

For those of you that have high stress jobs (I work f/t as an EMT and volunteer as a firefighter) any suggestions to keep from killing everyone?

I thank yall in advance and think this forum will be a great place to start my recovery from Nicotine Addiction. And it's great to know I'm not the only chick that does/did it!!

Welcome Michelle! You're right, lots of quitters have come before proving it's possible. You've already posted roll so I won't harp on the importance of that too much. Just make sure you're on it each and every day then honor your word... The first few days can be tough but a combination of hydration, exercise, and trident gum will help curb the headaches, 'moodiness' and oral fixation. Read everything you can here, get some digits from others and check out the chat room when your addiction rears it's ugly head. The truth shall set you free...

Welcome to KTC and great job posting roll on your first day. ^^^^ Coping ^^^^ gave some great advise, and as he mentioned exercise and hydration will help tremendously, especially dealing with the rage. While my job probably isn't as stressful as some of the situations you have to deal with, I would start the day by apologizing to those I was working with for the Ass I would potentially become. My tolerance for stupidity was negative 0, but it seemed to help if people knew I was in withdraw. It will suck until it doesn't but the freedom worth it. Never forget Day 1, and you will never go back. Proud to quit with you Michelle.

Welcome Michelle. the first few days suck but it does get better. Exercise helps me with the rage. That and smoky mountain chew. Might not be very ladylike but you have to do whatever it takes to get you through the rough patches. Stay strong! I am proud to quit with you today.

Welcome to the nut house Michele. You have taken the first step towards earning your freedom back. Stick with it through the early part and reach out to anybody on here and they are sure to lend a hand. This is the best decision you could make, take full advantage. It might just save your life.

^^^^ listen what they say. It's really pretty simple. You post roll every day, earlier the better making your promise not to use just for today. Wake up and repeat. It doesn't get any easier than that. I quit with you today.

Hi Michele!

Congratulations on making the best decision of your life. Yes, we have a surprising amount of lady quitters here. And actually, a surprising amount of EMTs, too. Really, we have people from all walks of life here, which is awesome.

It sounds to me like you've truly had enough with the tobacco and nicotine nonsense. This is great news, because it takes a sincere hatred for that poison to quit. All I can tell you is that early on it can be a bumpy ride. You might be short with people, or irritable, or shaky, or foggy, or any number of things. But the important thing to understand and bear in mind is that none of these withdrawal symptoms are permanent, none of them will kill you, and none of them are things you can't overcome with willpower, the accountability you'll find on this site, and a strategy going into it. Don't forget that this is something you are capable of doing. It is entirely possible to enjoy life and all the activities you used to do without nicotine, but it's gonna take you powering through the temporary, yet annoying withdrawal symptoms.

Make sure you have some sugarfree gum, or candy, or sunflower seeds, or whatever else you find helps with the oral fixation part of this thing. I know you mentioned you used snus, and a company called Smokey Mountain makes a tobacco and nicotine-free pouch product you could order online if you think that'd be helpful to you. Otherwise, exercising (even just walking), drinking lots of water, and getting rest whenever you can is going to help you tremendously.

Welcome aboard, and I'm glad to be quit alongside you today!

Thanks everyone! I bought my weight in gum yesterday, and I read someone is/was using cotton balls soaked in a beverage. I am trying that, and like that pretty well for the way it feels in my mouth. To me, its not only the nicotine, but also the having something in my mouth.

I used Smokey Mountain before, but they only have the loose stuff around here, so I didn't stick with it.

Welcome aboard! Trust the system here. Just like in the Fire/EMS world this is a brother/sisterhood. We have a bad ass group of quitters here and a few assholes but hey that's anywhere. I wouldn't be where I am without them. Some days are easier than others. The next couple weeks will be the hardest. I am a cop. My suggestion sunflower seeds. One of my triggers would be after a high stress situation I would throw a dip in. Instead I throw in a handful of seeds. Got me through the first month or so and now it's not even a problem. Exchange numbers and get to know your quitmates. My wife calls my quitmates my third family (Home, Blue line, and KTC).

Welcome to the family.

I quit with you today.
