(I posted this on one of the blog pages, but thought would be better here)
My name is Kevin. IÂ’m 40 years old, and have a wife and two boys. Live in KS.
IÂ’ve chewed for 20 + years. Started in college and havenÂ’t quit since. In that time IÂ’ve chewed Kodiak, Skoal, Skoal Bandits, Redman, Levi Garrett, and most recently I switched to Camel Snus Frost Pouches. Love the flavor of the Frost pouches from Camel.
Anyway, my story is only a little involvedÂ….
I don’t know how common this is, but I learned to swallow (rather than spit) from day 1. The guy that gave me a dip said it was a lot easier to do that than spit all of the time – so that’s what I did.
As a result, I have BarrettÂ’s esophogus, and have to have an upper GI every couple of years. Chances of cancer are increased dramatically.
My sister is a dental hygienist, and so I get to hear it from her all of the time.
VERY recently my father in law, an alcoholic, was diagnosed with mouth cancer and next week will have his tongue and the lower part of his FACE removed entirely.
I canÂ’t tell you how scary this is to me now that IÂ’m faced with it on a more personal level.
I just quit TWO days ago, and itÂ’s actually not quite as bad as I thought. I have had sweats, and after eating is obviously a bear, but IÂ’m getting by with nicorette.
I am THINKING about picking up some smokey mountain and giving it a try, but I have a feeling that it will do me more harm than good. I have tried Oregon and a couple of others, but really didnÂ’t care for them. I like chewing gum better when I tried them.

Kevin,
Congrats on quitting - just quit myself, this is day 3. Starting to feel better now. I went witht the cold turkey sand. No nic here. Everybody and I mean everybody I have ever seen try to quit either smoking or chewing while messing around with the patch or whatever - ended right back where they started.
Quit = Quit = NO Nic.
I am feeling ya bro.
Failure is not an option.

BTW... Glad to be here, and glad to see this forum is active.

Thanks Scooners!
No ... failure is NOT an option this time.

First, glad you are here.
Second, you have got to get off the Nicorette RIGHT NOW. As long as that is in your mouth, nic is entering your system, therefore, you are not quit. You say it isn't as bad as you might have thought...that's because you are still using one of the most addictive drug out there - nicotine.
Let's be clear, if you are posting roll, that means you are saying that you will be NIC free, not just DIP free. All or nothing, bub. What's it gonna be?

Funny... I said that, but I haven't had any of the gum since yesterday afternoon. It really didn't do much for me.
NIC free it is...

Good for you! I'm surprised there are no symptoms after getting rid of the gum. I was only chewing a few pieces a day when i came here and when I stopped got violently ill. Trust me, the gum is doing a lot more than you think delivering that nic to your body.
Anyway good for you if its going smoothly now. Be prepared for lots of up and downs both physically and mentally. That's why we are here and why you need to be here.
Sorry about your father-in-law. That's awful. besides the booze was he a smoker/dipper?
-
Sorry to hear about your father-in-law, but good choice. Cold turkey is the way to go...even if it is tough. Glad to hear it isn't too tough on you, but I suspect it will be.
If you do think of caving, you log on this site and read everything you can. Believe you can do it, post roll, and stay quit.
"Yesterday + 1" is your new motto. Don't worry about tomorrow, just Yesterday + 1. Before you know it, you'll be on two or three weeks down the road...and it will still sorta suck btw, but not as bad. And there is nothing like living nic free!!!
-

No... not at all. Just an alcoholic.
I guess alcohol is a major contributor to oral cancer. That's what I've read lately.

Welcome DualRadius!!
Good move dumping the nic gum. All that does is keep nicotine in your system.
I tried all that shit- the gum, the lozenge, always went back to the can.
Read as much as you can on this site. We are all here to help you and each other.
If you need anything feel free to PM me.
Stay Strong-Stay Quit

A couple of weeks in and haven't caved. I won't cave either - because it's not an option. I would be too ashamed to get caught by wife or kids - if nothing else.
I'm quit... it's what do I do IN PLACE of chewing?
If anything...

Goodmorning Dual, Im not trying to be an ass but you said you are a couple weeks in to your quit, and you have been a member on here for about what looks like 15 days -------and you only have 8 posts! If your asking me what you should do in place of chewing I would say make sure you post your promise everyday to your quit group.

Like Nutz said, post early, post often. It's that daily promise that makes this thing work. But to answer your question about using something other than dip? Lots of answers to that...
fake dip,
gum (not the nic kind),
sunflower seeds,
beef jerkey,
raw veggies (baby carrots worked for me),
atomic fireballs,
coffee grounds,
tea bags
While two weeks is quite an accomplishment, don't you dare let your guard down, or become complacent in your quit. You're nowhere near the edge of the woods yet. ;)

Which is the lesser evil?
1. Chewing "fake" chew (i.e. Smokey Mountain)
2. Nic gum or comparable
I know most of you would say #1 is better and the lesser evil, but I started chewing SMC (fake stuff) a couple of weeks ago, and now all of my old habits are back: eating, chewing, drinking diet coke. I'm gaining weight like crazy.
I would be better off chewing nic gum (or just regular gum) and drinking water.
For me, diet coke + chew = heaven. Even the fake stuff. That also ties to eating.
Just thought I'd throw that out there and see what everyone else thinks.

I've seen some random posting from you and to the best of my knowledge you are not posting roll....but aren't you around 20 days nicotine free now???
Why the hell would you want to introduce the nicotine back?
You can worry about all the incidentals of fake later...oral fixation and such. All you should be focused on now is overcoming your dependence upon nicotine.
-
Just to clarify,
YOur addicted to nicotine, not to dip. So using nicotine to quit using nicotine, kinda like
Drinking beer to stop drinking whisky
Giving blow jobs because you don't wanna take it in the can anymore.
Either way your still a nicotine addict, or an alcoholic, or a homo
So stick anything in your mouth but not nic gum. This is just my opinion and mileage may vary

Okay... I don't know what "posting roll" is. Happy to do that though.
I am nic free and have been since day 3 of quitting tobacco.
Using smokey mountain, but has led me back to habits I want to break - more eating, diet coke, etc.
KD
PS. This is really a great forum and the care everyone has for one another is amazing.

Posting roll is your daily promise to live nic free. Your Quit Group is determined by your quit date...just add 100 days from the last time you poisoned yourself with nic.
This site won't make it easy to quit. Quitting is the fight of your life...literally. But once you decide to live nic free and commit to quitting, you will have taken the first step. We'll help you with the rest, but you gotta be nic free. That means no nic gum, patches, or any of that crap. You gotta fight, climb the walls, live with a headache, feel the withdrawals, etc...like us. Then you're our quit brother, and worthy to post roll. PLEASE JOIN US!!!

I wouldn't worry about the eating and the diet cokes....right now. Nicotene is a poison and it will kill you. It is also very addictive.
Do whatever it takes to keep nicotene out of your body....that should be your first priority. In time you will have the strength to tackle your eating habits and diet cokes. I wouldn't try to change all your habits at once. Start with the most deadly....nicotene. Just my opinion, take it for what its worth.

I quit sometime in early October. Didn't write down the day. I think the weekend before October 12th, 2010 (which is the day I joined this site).
Anyway, it's now longer than 30 days, and my problem is still that I'm chewing the fake stuff and eating more than ever!
I did quit the Nic though!

Congrats on the 30 day mark. How are you going to remain quit now?

I'll go out on a limb and suggest posting roll. Daily.

Congrats on 30+ days and it will get better I gained 15 lbs in the 95 days of quit. I went from eating small portions a few times a day to eating huge meals three to four times a day. It has finally all started to calm down some just stay quit and keep up the good work. We are here to support you if you need help just ask.

You have had 11 posts in over 30 days..... THAT'S FUCKING WEAK!!!
I'm glad to hear you're still Quit, that's awesome. But what reason do you have for not posting roll everyday? The most important part of this site is posting roll and you are not doing it.
I would like to offer suggestions to you about the weight gain and the fake stuff and how to carry on from here but if you're not going to be back on the site for another 10 days then what's the fucking point?
