I'm 31, and have been dipping for 17 years. I'm at a can of Copenhagen Snuff a day. Due to financial reasons and simply wanting to be more healthy, I plan to quit this Saturday. I have a Spartan Race which is a 4k event. My question is; do I quit right now and deal with the withdrawals or wake up Saturday with a fresh start? I'm afraid if I quit today the withdrawals with take a toll on me before or during the race.

What the hell kinda question is this? If you want to quit, then you quit. Right now. If you want to be healthier, then you quit. Right now! What's more important? That race or your REAL health?
If you are looking for reasons to not quit yet, then you aren't serious about quitting. If you aren't serious about quitting, you will fail. Plain and simple.
If you are worried about the "withdrawal" now, what's going to happen when you are in the middle of the biggest SUCK of your life 3-4 days in?
Kinda ironic...Spartans emphasized duty, discipline and endurance....here you are preparing for this race and questioning yourself...
Dump the can, pledge yourself to the quit and show your integrity and discipline.
-
Just quit now. Bust your ass and take out your frustration during the race. It's better than spending those first few hours sitting in a car or at a desk going nuts. I have been quit for 12 days and things are getting better. The first few days suck and the withdrawal is not going to kill you. Quit today and take your rage out on the race this weekend.

Dude...quit NOW. There's always gonna be a "Spartan Race" around the corner. There is no perfect time to quit, other than right fucking now.
Next week you might be in a ball scratching contest or some other event and won't want to quit because it could distract you. Life is an event.
Jump on in the quit pool bro. We won't let you drown. But stay away from WT, he swims commando.

Diesel (as well as the others here) is right. The point is that addicts will ALWAYS find some excuse to put off the inevitible. I honestly can't see how quitting today will negatively affect the race. Is the race Saturday? You sure as hell don't want to quit that day. Go ahead and do it RIGHT NOW, and then exerting yourself Saturday will help clean out your system. You get an extra swing at the beast, so to speak. If you keep this plan in place, you are adding stress that you don't need. That stress will cause increased nicotine intake. That increase will likely make the withdrawals even worse when (IF) you actually quit on Saturday. Seriously, I guarantee you'll be packing half a can at the time Friday night and will stay up way too late just to get "one more". There is no "one more" for us. I know all of this because I lived it.
Sneak up on the addiction. Quit now. RIGHT NOW. Then post up a "Day 1" promise that you are done.
We're waiting......

Quit now and use all that rage and increased oxygen to run a great race. You can do it !!!

I had my last one about an hour ago, I'm out and don't plan on buying anymore. I've quit before, many years ago and remember the withdrawals being pretty harsh. You all make a very good point; I get it, no excuses! The reason I picked Saturday was to help flush my system but I can see me packing half a can Friday night.

Go to the June 2013 group (http://forum.killthecan.org/index.php?showtopic=7913) and go post roll call. Roll call is your promise not to use nicotine for the day. Today is day one.
Us addicts always use the excuse that "there is not a good time to quit". But I have yet to see a quitter on this site, say "they wished they chewed a little longer before quitting". Even if your time suffers a little this weekend, I gurantee you that you will not regret quitting today.
Most people who say they will come back on day XXX to post day one never show up. An addict always can come up with a reason not to quit. Glad you have realized to quit NOW.
Now go post day one!

A changed mindset is one of the most important things here.
You've never quit before. You took a break.
Then, for some unworthy reason, you decided to subject yourself to the misery again. You never have to suffer it again. Just make this THE quit.
Glad you've dumped it. Welcome.

I've quit before
I've "tried to" quit before. Clearly you have not quit because you went right back to packing that shit in your face. Give it a different approach this time and jump on board 100% and post day 1. You will never regret this decision and everyone is here willing to help you along the way.
Hope to see you on June roll soon!

It took me a minute to figure HOW to post in June. I'm on the spreadsheet now. I quit for 6 months about 8 years ago and made a choice to start back, I know I can do this.

great decision! Welcome to KTC, read, read, read, drink lots of water and exercise will help flush that junk out. Get to know your brothers in June, and do not be afraid to ask for numbers of guys you can so you can text or call when you run into some tough times, and you will run into some rough patches. But we are all doing it, so can you. PM me (click on my name and then the end PM text) and I will swap numbers with you.
