Hello All,
I have been reading over this site and forum for the last 3 hours. I have been dipping since age 15 and am now 29. I have made several attempts at quitting. The most recent was roughly 5 years ago, as a promise to my wife once my son was born. I managed 9 weeks, and then I allowed the "stress of work" to be an excuse to start again. As my son has started to ask questions about what I am doing, and now having a 2 year old daughter I have decided its time. It is pretty difficult as a member of the military nearly everyone I work with either smokes or dips, and stress seems to always be high. I ordered some of the smokeless alternative stuff, I hope it helps!. Anyways I was wondering what can I expect for the next few days/weeks as I plan on stopping the instant the new smokeless alternative arrives. I feel if I don't do it soon I never will, and it will be too late as I am already 14+ years into it. So any advice or expectations would be greatly appreciated! Thanks
Dave

You should go ahead and quit now. I have a buddy who has an unopened log of the fake shit. He ordered it 3 years ago. He is still dipping Copenhagen. It didn't arrive when he had his moment of clarity. Your window is short, you are playing with fire by waiting for a placebo to arrive. Go buy some sunflower seeds and suck it up. Be a man, for yourself, and your family.

Exactly
Herbal snuff is not a magic remedy. It is merely an aid.
Like He-Man, YOU HAVE THE POWER!
I, too, quit because of my son. One of the lowest points of my life was when I promised my 5 year old some beef jerky. As he loves the stuff, I drove all over looking for a bag. For some unknown reason, nobody had any that night.
Then I stopped at a little drive through, and they had the shredded stuff in a can. I gave it to him without thinking, and he apparently was conflicted in the back seat. After 5 minutes, he asked if I was sure. I told him yeah. The dumbass in me still didn't recognize why he was wary.
Well, we got home and he went inside. Right in front of mom, he packed his can.
He fucking packed his can.
And I was done. That moment I realized I needed to be done with this stuff. I used the herbal stuff too, and it is helpful. However, I still went bat shit insane initially. Your body is not addicted to the act of chewing. No. That is a habit. It is easily broken or replaced with seeds, teabags, cherry pits, etc. Your body is addicted to the nicotine in the act.
What I'm trying to say is sack up. Quit. Declare you're quit. Stay quit.

Agree with Grizz, the sooner the better. Honestly the fake stuff was not much help to me the first few days. That intial 72 hours while your body is physically detoxing from nicotine is gonna suck no matter how you cut it, the sooner you quit the sooner the clock starts. One day at a time, lets do this today!

Just quit. It will suck bad until at some point it doesn't, but quitting will never suck as bad as dying from cancer at an early age and leaving your family without you...
Read the welcome center first. It will give you the 101 on posting roll, what to expect when quitting, and what the endgame is if you do not. Read some intro threads from start to finish; any 3-4 of them will do as it is a very similar path. The intros are used as logs of what we are going through as we quit, and are great for seeing what lies ahead.
The fake dip helped me greatly for the first month, and the first week especially, but sunflower seeds and hard candy will keep your mouth busy while you battle the craves. Get some jerky chew at the gas station until your fake dip gets there.
Now take all your dip into the bathroom, dump that nasty poison into the toilet, and flush it. Next find your quit group (May '14 I think and that will be good for you since you will be a leader for your group) and post roll. Just promise not to use nicotine in any form for 24 hours and keep your word. Not easy but simple.
You can take your freedom back. No one will pin you down and pack your gob with the poison, and the dip will not jump from the tin into your mouth.

Wow I opened this thread up and Dave I see some true badasses of quit already lining up to support you. Listen to them- quit now, and follow the program here. It is what you will need, and you can do it, even in your situation, if you follow this program and commit to a real quit.
If you want a little more motivation to help you jump in, and to help defend against temptation of others using nicotine around you, i suggest educating yourself as much as possible about how evil this particular addiction really is. You don't want this stuff in your body, ESPECIALLY if you are in the military and want to remain sharp. It's a neurotoxin, more poisonous than snake venom, and it took over your brain to make you want to keep getting your fix. Check out the link below, and all sorts of really good material on the site here:
Nicotine Addiction 101 (http://whyquit.com/whyquit/linksaaddiction.html)
It's really bad stuff. It pissed me off to no end to learn what it does, and that there's no law against it or anything. I still hate that about it, and I will help you quit any way I can. I'm fighting this evil nic bitch any way I can. Send me a PM if I can help you once you decide to take the leap- and don't wait for the fake stuff, just do it. Pack some jerky or candy in your mouth until the fake arrives, but just get through it now and leave the shit behind. Take your own life back, don't put it off any more.

Dave - quit nowÂ…todayÂ…then the next dayÂ…than the next day. I am on day 4. Supposedly all nicotine is gone from body but I still want to pack my lip. I am using the fake stuff like crazy and it is a huge help. Addiction versus habit. Break the nicotine addiction and then later break the habit of packing your lip. Each day is a milestone.

Welcome to your quit. Plain and simple, it's gonna suck until it doesn't. We've all been there and deal with it each day. Deal with today and tomorrow will come. Keep using and you may not get tomorrow. I'm quitting today. You in?
