Title: Pretty F'n Scary!
Post by: Picker.of.Strings on October 18, 2013, 11:43:00 AM
I've been dipping for 24 years.... today is day 2 with no nicotine! At the beginning of this week I noticed a white spot on my tongue.... obviously that's pretty F'n scary. That night I dumped the rest of my can in the trash and decided to quit. I have an appointment with the dentist tomorrow morning to check this thing out and make sure it's not something serious. I have three kids and an amazing wife.... this shit isn't worth it man! I'm done!

Picker (damn that was fun to type),
I hate that it took that to make you want to quit. I too was a 24 year addict, now I am still an addict some might even say I am a-dick.

get that shit checked out, and let us know what it is. I am right here quitting with you. My advice is build your network of accountability. This forum is build around that. As fucked up as it may sound to share your phone number with random people on the internet, chose some people that you have trust or faith in exchange numbers and help them as they help you.

Remember to own your quit like a GD Boss every day.

This is all worth it,

Welcome Pick,
Go to the Welcome Center at the top of the page pink/salmon colored words learn how to post roll.

My concern is that fear is what is driving the quit. If it just fear based it will be short lived. You need to quit for YOU not fear not your baby mommy or your friend lost his battle. YOU need to quit because you feel that you are worth it and that you have seen the light that every time you put the poison in your mouth you are spinning the cylinder on the revolver.

PM me if you need anything or a number to hold on to

Thanks... I've posted roll twice now and will continue to do so every day. While it is true that it was fear that made me dump the can into the trash, it is the realization of the stupidity of this habit and the desire to live 'cleaner' and be around longer for my family that makes this quit real.

My four year old son told me the other day, when he grows up he wants to "eat copenhagen like daddy"..... that's unacceptable, so I am quitting not only for myself but for my kids as well. It's just time.

Pick,
Being a father I can see your desire to quit for that young man. Just remember quit for you and only you, let him and the rest of the family support you. Trust me there will be day that you will see what Trauma and I are pointing at.

You made you start, now make you QUIT.

My oldest son at age 11 did a presentation about my quit and I have to be honest it made my quit stronger and I love him dearly but I still do this daily for me. As selfish as that may sound it feel great because I know it is my head strong mental aptitude that is fuelling my quit the other stuff is icing on the cake brother.

Welcome to the Best of YOUR life.
You can do this: One day at a time.
It is very simple, yet probably the hardest thing you've ever done...post roll early in your a.m., keep your word all day (your word is good, right?), wake and repeat.
If I can do this, so can YOU!
If you're a drinker, lay of the alcohol for awhile...as getting drunk will lower anyones resolve...lotta men cave while drunk. Don't let this be you!
Get in here and read, gather your tools and weapons to win this fight daily.
1 problem + nicotine = 2 problems!
Cheers.

All the best with the dentist tomorrow! There's nothing so relaxing as a clean bill of health. Which could be about the time when it seems alright to have a dip again. So I hope  pray the appt turns out well  you get peace of mind from it, and you use it to fuel your quit!

Thanks yall.... I appreciate the support and advice. The dentist visit went well.... nothing to worry about. She was a little amazed at how badly my gums have receded though. On the bright side.... she is extremely hot so I'm sure I'll keep up with the check-ups.

Anyway I'm very grateful for this wake-up call and I am 100% in for the long fight. Is it common to have a very hard time sleeping when first quitting? I sleep for about 30 minutes to an hour then wake up and fight to get back to sleep.... I've never had a problem sleeping in my life until a couple nights ago. I figure it's the body adjusting.... any thoughts?

Absolutely NORMAL!

READ (http://www.killthecan.org/your-quit/what-to-expect-when-you-quit-dipping/)

some quitters use melatonin. It helps a great deal while your body is re-wiring!
Remember, we weren't born with this poison in our mouths!!
Quit On!

It took me appx 30 days before I began to sleep what I would call normal.

It is highly overrated anyway and one day you will get all you need and then some.

You can do this.

As tees guys have said, it's normal. I'm on day 21 and I haven't had a decent nights sleep in a few weeks now. Small price to pay though. I just drink more coffee, lol

More coffee? Maybe that's why you're not sleepin' right man! haha.

I'll be alright. Was just curious if it was a common thing

Almost day 4.... This Smokey Mountain stuff sucks. This classic shit tastes like old tires and wintergreen reminds me of those wax teeth we used to have when we were kids. Oh well. Guess I'm sticking with Life Savers.

Anything that doesnt have nic in it, I hated as well. I ordered every fake on the market...hated those too. Some swear by the fake but for me personally, I used it for a short time like a pacifier and then ditched it. It was pissing my brain off.

As for sleep...try this.

Take a hot shower before bed but when you're almost done turn the hot water off and stand under the cold water for 5 seconds. Brush your teeth with extra toothpaste and get into bed. Make sure all is quiet and lay on your back like your in a coffin with your hands on your stomach. Take normal even breaths from your stomach. Note your hands going rising and falling with your stomach as you breath. Try not to think of anything else. Not what happened today or what tomorrow will bring, just concentrate on your hands rising and falling in rhythm with your stomach. Keep your mind clear and you will be out in no time.

If this does not work. Beat off TWICE. You'll be out like a baby.

do what you gotta do my man. Check out the blog for other fake stuff ideas. Smokey Mountain is not the only thing out there. I have been trying all kinds of things. Even made some of my own out of Earl grey tea leaves, honey and lemon juice. Your doing good work. keep it up.

Haha, I tried the tea thing too.... not bad actually. I think I'm gonna stick with the life savers though. I think the fake stuff feels a lot like the real thing and I want to get past the urge for both the nicotine AND the feel of having a dip in. I think I'll do that best just changing things up all together. Ill keep a can of this smoky mountain stuff around just in case but life savers are working for me. Hey if they work for Hank Jr. why not me?

Day 4 started well. I felt rested and strong. That lasted most of the day. For dinner I ate a shit load of pizza and was really full after.... of course you all know what you want after a big meal right? I sucked on some life savers and smoky mountain and played with the kids.... got through it. Then I remembered my humidor. See I have some really fucking good cigars in there and I haven't thought about the humidor at all since I began my quit earlier this week. Instead of going to the humidor I came down to my office and logged on here and started reading, replying, and hanging out on the site. That's where I am now. When I'm done here I'll go up to bed.... not going anywhere near the humidor. Not even to destroy the cigars. If I open it up I may be more tempted so I'll stay away from it today and will get rid of them tomorrow.

Welcome to the site. One recommendation. Destroy the cigars NOW!!! The pure fact your thinking of them is proof of that... Why do you still have them (rhetorical question that needs not answered)?

Great job picker of strings. I remember those evening,, especially early in my quit. I remember sitting there one night in particular. I was sitting there feeling sorry for my self,, tears streaming down. I looked at my wife, told her I didn't know if I could do this.

I dug deep and made it through that night. I used the site, wife, determination and drive. Most importantly I made a promise earlier that day that I could not break. I made it through that evening and guess what. The next evening was a little easier. The next a little more easier. You see where I'm going with this.

You keep pushing through my friend. Things do get better, that I can promise. Now I sit here in the same seat and can't believe how much of a slave I was. I can't believe I ever shed one tear for the poison. The poison sucks. My life is so much better. You will get where i'm at my friend one day at a time. You can do it,, You know how I know?? I did!!!

Stolen from Greg5280 over at whackthepack.org:

So live your life that the fear of death can never enter your heart. Trouble no one about their religion; respect others in their view, and demand that they respect yours. Love your life, perfect your life, beautify all things in your life. Seek to make your life long and its purpose in the service of your people. Prepare a noble death song for the day when you go over the great divide.

Always give a word or a sign of salute when meeting or passing a friend, even a stranger, when in a lonely place. Show respect to all people and grovel to none.
When you arise in the morning give thanks for the food and for the joy of living. If you see no reason for giving thanks, the fault lies only in yourself. Abuse no one and no thing, for abuse turns the wise ones to fools and robs the spirit of its vision.

When it comes your time to die, be not like those whose hearts are filled with the fear of death, so that when their time comes they weep and pray for a little more time to live their lives over again in a different way. Sing your death song and die like a hero going home.

When it comes your time to die, be not like those whose hearts are filled with the fear of death, so that when their time comes they weep and pray for a little more time to live their lives over again in a different way. Sing your death song and die like a hero going home.

-Tecumseh
Always loved that writing.

Haha, I hear ya bro!!! I went thru bags of them early on, and probably 20 bags of jolly ranchers too. I promise they are easier to quit than dip! but dont even worry about it for now.

Good to see a fellow guitarist quitting! How long you been playing? what do you play?

Rickddd.. I play a little of everything. I've been playing bluegrass for a long time but I've recently gotten back into the electric side and have been playing a lot of Heavy blues, and rockabilly.

I'm so used to dipping while playing that it's taking some getting-used-to to practice without dip.

You'll get used to playing without dip. Have you tried the herbal/fake stuff? it really helped me out in my early quit days.

I play classic rock, cover band stuff mostly. 80s to early 90s is kinda my wheelhouse. Also a little country, but I'm a rocker at heart.

Applejack is also a guitar player on this site, good dude, I'm sure you'll cross his path along the way here too.

I've been meaning to post something and ask you about your musical background. Rickddd beat me to it :) I'm a session player and have been a studio cat for years. I totally understand your whole thing about playing with a dip in. I've been playing for 35 years. Quitting dip caused an upheaval in my playing. Can I actually play without chew!? Duh. Of course I can! It may take awhile bro, but you'll turn it around. Music has NOTHING to do with dip. Stay the course... Post roll... Keep playing. You'll be amazed at what happens. Pm me brutha... I'll be more than happy to help!

I'm down here playing right now. I can actually play and sing a whole song without having to stop, grab my spitter, spit, then continue the song.... who knew? and my fingers still work even without copenhagen.... I was thinking about it earlier and realized that I've been dipping and smoking longer than I've been playing guitar so I've never played guitar clean....

Sweet!!! More musicians. I'm a bass player and play a lot of upright with a church band and a bluegrass group and slap a bit a dah bass from time to time. Once people found out I was an upright player I have been more busy. one day I will thump with bela. Probably not. But one can dream no?

I need a bass player.... and a drummer..... and someone who can sing WAY better than I can. Most of my jamin' friends have moved out of the area so I play solo a lot these days. I use a looper (Boss loopstation) and homemade stomp board for live stuff, and backing tracks at home.

Last night was great! No problems sleeping at all... and I'm feelin' good today. I did chew a metric ton of sunflower seeds yesterday so I need to lay off them a bit today.

Funktronic, AJ, Rickddd: do you guys do any recording? If so what DAW do you use? I'm thinking, if you are interested, we could share tracks and record our parts individually and see what we come up with. I have Reaper, ProTools, Cubase, Magix MM14, and a few others. If you don't have a DAW but want one, Reaper is free and is pretty badass. Just thought we could get some kinda collaboration project going.

Damn, that would be awesome. But I don't have anything. or even the equipment like mikes and whatnot. Nor do I have the money to do so at this time. It will be something that I can look into for the future. I did a lot of work on pro-tools in college in a studio. Took some audio engineering classes. Bit out of practice with it though.

That would be pretty cool! I don't do any home recording now. I'll check out Reaper sometime and see if I can figure it out.

Day 8 is going well. I got a good night sleep for the second night in a row and the lifesavers and smokey mountain are helping today. Unfortunately I had to give up the seeds.... they are chewing up my gums and cheek pretty bad...anyone else ever have a problem with that? I sucked on seeds for a full day pretty much nonstop so it's no big surprise my mouth hurts......

Same problem, but in reverse.

I was using Smokey Mountain more than seeds. And my gums looked just as bad as when I was dipping. I think anything that you put in your lip or cheeks is gonna cause damage.

My unscientific and untested thoughts on this issue. In the beginning, nothing is going to work or taste great. Anything probably works as well as anything else. Put a few pebbles in your cheek. Doesn't matter. Your brain is still trying to squeeze some nicotine out of whatever is in there. When it doesn't get it, brain says its no good, switch to something else.
Don't get me wrong, it helped me tons to have my homemade coffee and brown sugar packets, and then I went through more seeds than I thought possible. Then, eventually, my subconscious brain figured out that it wasn't going to get any nicotine from the crap in my cheek, and then I didn't care.
I am just saying that ultimately, nothing is going to really satisfy. The satisfaction comes from beating down the nic-bitch each and every time she comes calling.

Picker,
Well done on the double digit membership! We are going to be in this club till jan'14 right?
Ive read most of your posts over the past few days and i am impressed with your resolve. You seem to want this quit fully and completely.
I quit with you now, tomorrow, when we reach HOF, and for the rest of our days. I quit with you in the early double digits knowing how much it hurt to get this far.
You are strong. Because of that, so are we. I quit with you in good times and bad.

Thats good, picker. Playing wasn't really a trigger for me, but the first time I played a gig and had a beer, was a huge trigger. (could have been the beer as much as the gig I suppose!). I substituted fake stuff and it was fine.

I know the feeling I was so happy to the day I hit double digits. Your doing a awesome job and keep up the fight. Kick that addictions ass ODAAT.

Day 13. Feelin' good. Sleep is normal now, cravings are not as strong (but they're still there) and the Red Hots and Smokey Mountain are helping. Biggest trigger is still in the evening after dinner.... But I expect it and plan for it so it's no that big of a deal. I got this!

Last night was tough! had the kids out for trick-or-treat. My neighborhood gets crazy for halloween. My wife and I had a bunch of friends over with their kids and many of our friends smoke. I had a really hard time not smoking. Honestly, I really think the only reason i did not smoke a cigarette was because i had posted roll yesterday morning.

I quit smoking and dipping at the same time and haven't craved cigarettes at all... only dip. until yesterday. Anyway Thanks to this site and the promise I made to myself and the Nic Killers yesterday I did not cave and I feel great today.

Great job, man... There is so much power in posting roll and keeping our word.

Quit on.

I caved. I felt I owed to ya'll to let you know where I've been. Last weekend, I caved and I've been smoking again since. No excuses. I want to thank those of you who've texted and PM'd me to check-up, I appreciate your concern. I will get my head out of my ass shortly but right now my heads just not right.... I wish all of you the best, and good luck.

It sounds to me like your apologizing. For what? I thank you for your cave. It showed me how easily i can be bound chained and gagged once again. I don't need your luck,, I'll stick to posting roll and keeping my word. Enjoy suckling with the poison, I'll enjoy my freedom.

WHAT THE FUCK!!!

Ok, so you caved. That is weak as FUCK, but you know the drill. Answer the 3 questions and get back to it.

If I am reading this right, you are saying that you are going to continue smoking until you get your head out of your ass? From the sounds of it your head is coming out or your dick hole.

If that's the case...nice knowing you. Pussy. I've heard that one before.

I'll let the guys from your quit group coddle you or throttle you.

Best of LUCK to you.

Picker, if your mind isn't right, get it right. Figure out why you caved. What tools are here that you weren't using. Get your ass back up and answer those questions.

Must have met up with them friends again. Always easier to follow then lead. Just thinking of being around a room full of smokers makes me want to gag. Smoking and spitting,,, which one is worse? They both have slavery and death in their future,, why not do both!?!?! At least this way your end could be several differenift ways.

Think about it picker... You weren't meant to be lead around by a can or paper filled with poison.

Picker,
Damn it, you came in with such commitment to quitting. I read what you post and so do others. Yes, i also liked to smoke and dip. For short periods i could exchange one method of nicotine addmission for another...but i always dipped in the end. You're using smoking as a NRT to cover up how absolutely fucked your head is. I came here hating myself for how useless i was 7 days into quitting. When you are paralayzed by anxiety, curled up in ball on the couch, you have nothing. I wasnt worried about "getting my head straight," i was worried about surviving the next ten seconds.
Give it some thought. My impression is that you are not comfortable with the weakness and vulnerability quitting brings. Endure it, because the reward is strength and personal fortitude. Buckle down and get back into it. I will be here.
Grizzfall.

You LIAR!! Not only did you lie all the people in your quit group but you lied to yourself. You can take your half-assed apology and shove it straight up your ass. " I will get my head out of my ass shortly but right now my heads just not right.... " What kind of bullshit is that? Weak. May the chains of slavery rest lite upon your shoulders

Sign here, Picker.

I give up my quit. Quitting is impossible and I cannot do it. I love dipping more than I love myself. I care about dipping more than I care about my personal health. I love dipping more than I love my family. I know this addiction will kill me, and I ACCEPT that fact. I enjoy spending time alone with my can more than I enjoy spending time with anyone else on the planet. I look forward to losing my jaw, my tongue, my throat, my life – it’s worth it. When I am lying in my hospital bed fighting a losing battle against cancer I will feel a sense of satisfaction knowing that this is the path I CHOSE. My only regret will be that I didn’t start dipping earlier in life. I will feel sorrow for my family’s heartbreak and suffer untold pain, but I know you must sacrifice for the things you truly love.

I know ALL the consequences of my actions and I accept them fully and without regret. I hereby choose to give my life to this addiction – I do so with a smile on face.

For the sake of you... quit with us again and dont take the pussy way out

There's that, and then there is also the people who have lost loved ones and went through divorces in the midst of their quits, and they had the testicular fortitude to say, "I'M NOT CAVING."

1 problem + nicotine = 2 problems. You caved. It sucks but it happened. Be done with that and get back up rather than giving up altogether. Your head is not right? JOIN THE CLUB. The fog hits even at day 50. The craves are still here for me but my resolve and strength get better each and every day and doing it the KTC way is my quit's salvation. Obviously, you don't want it enough -- it has NOTHING to do with your head not being in the 'right place.'

Weak, weak, weak ass stuff, Picker. I thought you had what it took. I guess I was dead wrong on that one. Enjoy stuffing your face with death. We'll be here should you ever choose to come back and MAN up.

My four year old son told me the other day, when he grows up he wants to "eat copenhagen like daddy"..... that's unacceptable, so I am quitting not only for myself but for my kids as well. It's just time.
REMEMBER WRITING THAT? Can you hear your little boy still saying that? IF YOU DON'T STOP BEING A PUSSY, HE MIGHT GET HIS WISH!

The cycle ends with you NOW. Kill that addiction chain so your son does not have to live it.

If not, you're nothing more than a coward.
