Title: Quitting now...
Post by: aartod on February 04, 2014, 05:20:00 PM
I'm 36 and have been dipping since 15. I am quitting my 3 can a week habit today and will be buying some smoky mountain dip in the way home. I have quit before for 2 years, so I know exactly what I'm in for! Wish me luck!

aartod,
First of all welcome to KTC. I am glad that you found us. There is no luck, when here, when someone wishes you luck be afraid. If you want luck go buy a rabbit's foot in lieu of the cans of Smokey Mountain. The best thing you can do is want it and want it really bad. Remember to take things one day at a time, never ever focus on tomorrow or next week, fight hourly at first, then daily. My addiction started at the age of 12, I too am 36 and I quit cold fucking turkey with no luck, but with will I am at day 205 today.

Urges and cravings will come and go, rage may become a factor as well. You may notice that your body will change some good, some bad. Read up on that stuff here, those who have walked the trail before you can help guide you through things when you need it.

Now learn how to post roll How to Post Roll (http://forum.killthecan.org/index.php?showtopic=50).

Then join your quit group Pre HOF May 2014 (http://forum.killthecan.org/index.php?showtopic=9408), this will be the month at which you will hit your HOF or 100 days of quit, as long as you have the balls to quit.

Next read the HOF speeches and stories here, learn from the veterans. Look in the site for all kind of information like Spousal Support (http://www.killthecan.org/community/spousal-support/) or What to Expect (http://www.killthecan.org/your-quit/what-to-expect-when-you-quit-dipping/)

Find an alternative to dip Smokeless Alternatives (http://www.killthecan.org/your-quit/smokeless-alternatives/). Find other alternatives (candies, seeds, peanuts, beef jerky...). Also drink lots of water. Bump your intake so you have to stop at every urinal in order to not piss your pants.

Finally, get to know people, exchange phone numbers, make friends and quit. I also have a beautiful wife and kids, which only pisses me off when I look at the photo albums and see a chunk of nasty weed in my mouth in all of them.

P.S. all of the above underlined words are links to different areas on KTC that should help you get started.

Sincerely,
Pinched

Well, I guess luck was a poor choice of words! I know the quitting drill, I quit once for 2 years and my dumb ass had a dip one day when out in the woods with my buddies... Just takes one! I know how much it sucks to quit- but I have been telling myself I would for last year now and today I was fed up with my procrastination! I know I will succeed, and this site seems like a good place for support. Thanks for the responses!

Welcome to the May 2014 group, aartod. Look forward to seeing many more roll posts going forward. Lots of eyes will be on you on this site, holding you accountable and ensuring you're a man of your word, but ultimately you have to look yourself in the mirror and live with your decisions. Stay true to your quit, and reach out to get numbers for the inevitable bumps in the road.

Great skit. East West bowl (original) takes the cake.

aartod, ok, so maybe I'm still a rook because I don't have a 2 year dip free notch on my belt, but a word of caution, this quit will be different. Why? well you tell me. You've told us what happened, now tell us why? Lastly how will this time be different. Give me a good reason to quit with you and consider it done.

Reasons? Okay first of all cancer runs in my family- (aside from my wife and kids) I literally have 3 family members left. Second, my wife and 4 kids, three are boys that don't need to be future dippers too! Third, my gums are getting real bad, chew is expensive, and horrible for me. I think I stand a better chance of staying quit because I already learned the hard way that "just one dip" is too much! I think those are some damn good reasons.

AA
I also paused back in the early 80's for about 3 years and then had that one dip that turned into another 30 years of procrastinating. Never Again For Any Reason (NAFAR) will I let myself make that one dip mistake! Why? Because I will make that daily promise like I have for the past 675 days. Pm me if you need anything.

Those are good reasons, unquestionable. And as important as all those things are in your life (kids, wife, cancer history, finances, etc.), make sure that the most important thing about your reason for quitting is about you. Do this for you first and foremost and all of the other things will fall in line. When it comes to the quit itself, it's all about you. Everybody and everything that surrounds that quit will reap its benefits. I'm with you brother. Let's do this.

Here's a quick question- not sure if it's the right place to ask it. When I do the roll call deal I can see my name along with others that have pledged not to have any nicotine... Then after a hour or two my name is no longer on the list on more recent postings (and some other names are missing but a lot of them remain)??? Also, how to I get my name on the accountability spreadsheet?

when you post and your name disappears it means you were "bumped". Someone posted roll at the same time you did and their "reply" is posted above yours without your name on it.

The accountability sheet will be managed by a volunteer quitter(s) in your group. They will put you on it and keep track of your post record...which should be 100% if you are serious about quitting.

So, if I was bumped off the list should I do the roll call deal again?

yes...as you and your quit group get a little more experience you will learn how to spot bumps and fix them. After you post roll go back and check the post underneath you. If someone from that post is missing from your post you should "bump fix" by moving them up. It happens.

It sucks dude. There isn't a way to sugar coat it. It just really sucks.

but....It will get better. A lot better. I promise.

Use your tools. Get phone numbers and use them. Live up to your promise.

Don't forget what you are going through right now. Use your intro thread to document it for yourself. You will want to remember how terrible you feel.

I had about two shitty weeks at work, where I felt so bad and felt as though I didn't accomplish a damned thing except staying quit. Then I realized I was staying quit.

This too will pass, I promise you.

In all seriousness I was a fuck up at work for the last month (quit 1/6/14), I think part of it was the holiday let down and winter doldrums, but a big part was being in the fog, then crave fighting and just totally focused on staying quit. I am just starting to be able to focus again this week (yea what am I doing on here at 4:00 PM if I am so focused at work)....I am getting better and you will too! Quit on, it is worth whatever it takes!

AARon. You are rocking this quit. You have garnished some damn fine quitters here in your corner.

When you have time, please tell us how you are handling your craves. I know I'm pushing you a little much but I'm all about quitting mean. I want you to stay quit, I want you to be clean. Kick the nic bitches ass. What happens in your head when the bitch comes calling? Let us have it...

When the nic bitches start calling, I tell my self that I don't chew so I don't need it. Sounds kinda cheesy, but it makes sense in my own head. Also helps to read the stories about cancer and about the effects of the chemicals in tobacco. Sometimes I catch myself scheming a way to go buy a can and just have one, but I catch myself and try to dwell on how much this sucks and not wanting to do it again- and that I have quit before and fucked it all up with "just one". I can tell I am going to win this battle this time... It is going good and my head is in the right place.

You are winning. Every time you addiction comes calling and you somehow fight that off, you win. Make sure you understand that, and be proud but tough. Even one win by the bitch is not acceptable. Like you said, just one and hooked. You are doing great, scream if you need help, there are a bunch of us here just for that purpose.

Nothing cheesy....I call it Mental Judo.....at this point the addiction (nic bitch) is playing with your head (craves, old habits) and you need to be a Mental Judo Master. Keep on posting, planning and communicating....AAAAAYYYYY YAAAAAA nic bitch!!!

Thanks for the replies! Well yesterday was a hard day... Big troubles with my oldest son (17), logs of drama and bullshit. Troubles like that are exactly what I don't need this soon into my quitting. I made it thru without caving, thought about getting a can- talked myself out of it. After it was all said and done- I am so glad I didn't puss out.

The drama and all the bullshit will actually wind up helping your quit in the long run. The sooner we realize that there is never an perfect time to quit but that any day that ends in Y is an ideal day to quit the better off we are.

Life will continue to happen around your quit, more shit will happen, you will be tested to your limit several times.

Just remember that everything you do is a test and it is not always how you act that counts but how you react.

ZC is right. Great job. Your going to be tested and tried my friend. None of us are immune to life's troubles. At one time we dealt with problems by putting the poison in our pie holes and thinking that it was helping. IDIOTS! I've said it on one other intro today. I've seen people lose wives and jobs. I've seen people go though just about anything you can think of and remain quit.

Add your name to the list of people i've seen go through life's troubles and remain quit. Good job! You made it through this one, so you can damn sure make it through the next one. Glad to be quit with you.
