Title: Quitting for good
Post by: TacoMEDIC on October 19, 2011, 11:40:00 PM
Hey everyone.

My name is Matt. I am 24 years old. I have been dipping Grizzly Wintergreen for about 7 years. Dip at least a can a day. Started when I was playing High School ball. I am a Paramedic. Been one for 5 years now. Long, stressful days on an ambulance didn't help this habit. I'm damn sick of it. Have been for a while. I tried quitting several times in the last few months. I set days to quit. Specific dates, wedding day, etc. Get a few days in and cave every time. I think with some support I can finally do this for good. I want to be quit so damn bad. I'm sick of this shit running my life. Just need some help. I hope I can find that here.

Anyways, thanks in advance. Any advice on the quit will be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Matt

Threw in my last dip this afternoon. I'm done. Day 0 is today. Day 1 is tomorrow. And so on...

First thing big props to you on your decision to quit. Like you I had tried to quit by myself before but always went crawling back to that shit can. I can say proudly I am on day 81 only with the help of this site. If you totally commit to the idea of "posting roll every day" it will work for you. My first advice would be get your ass to walmart and buy a can of fake dip. Most Walmarts carry Smokey Mountain Chew, Wintergreen flavor helped me. i dipped grizzly too so it really did take the edge off. The most important thing that helped me was concentrate on today only. day 1-5 are going to be real shitty, real shitty. Thats good though, dont ever forget how shitty, it will help later on. Just worry about today, your not quitting forever just for today. Post roll, which is your pledge you will not use any form of nicotine for the day. Wake up the next day and repeat. That easy. Proud to quit with you brother.

Congratulations on taking your life back. This site, if used properly, will be extremely helpful in maintaining your committment to your quit.

There is really only one thing you truly NEED to ensure this site works for you. You might be strong. You might be smart. You might be successful. But the only thing you really NEED to ensure this site works for you is integrity.

You post roll every day. That's the easy part. Get online and head to January and say "TacoMEDIC - Day XX." The real question will be - do you have the integrity to sustain your quit for that day? Do you have the integrity to keep your word?

Make no mistake, this will be a fight. But you are fighting for your life, so fight with everything you have. The Nic Bitch has been getting her ass handed to her repeatedly by nearly 10,000 of us every day. We have all been through the fight. We are all still fighting. Our opponent gets weaker every day, as will yours over time.

Take advantage of everything this site has to offer. In the beginning, this site is your home page. You are here every day. For hours. It works.

Welcome

Welcome Matt. I am also 24, and I dipped for almost 10 years. Like you, I started in high school because of sports. You made the right choice in coming here. This site has helped me stay quit for 72 days. We take quitting seriously around here though. By posting roll, you give all of your quit brothers your word that you will not use nicotine for that day. Post roll everyday, keep your word, then do it again. It's that simple. You are so much stronger than nicotine. Send me a personal message if you need anything. Stay quit.

Oh, man. Day 1 is almost in the books. It was rough. I'm working 24 hours on an ambulance. Normally I'd go through a whole can of Grizzly or more. Instead, I went through a whole bag of sunflower seeds and a whole pack of gum.

Thanks to those that quit with me. You've helped make today a success.

I went through 2 bags of seeds and 3 packs of gum on my first two days. The seeds really aggravated my mouth but I found lifesaver mints to really do the trick.

Not only did you quit for today but your breath will have never smelled better.

I quit with you today.

Just went and picked up a couple cans of Smokey Mountain tobacco-free wintergreen snuff. I'm going to try not to use any but it kind of feels comfortable in my pocket. Also got another 3 bags of seeds and some more gum. Day 2. It's my first day at home by myself with no tobacco. I'm going to call up some tobacco-free buddies to come hang out. Hopefully they'll help me help myself stay quit.

Thanks everyone for continued support. I quit with you all today.

day 2 in the books, your half way thru the hardest part. Keep going strong. Dont feel bad about throwing a pinch of smokey mountain in your lip, anything to keep nicotine out of your body is ok. Well almost anything, there are some sick fucks on this site. Anyway, way to go. No looking back, you are a full fledged bad ass quitter. Gear up for day 3

Thanks, bud. I feel a little better this morning. Still anxious but the headache is gone. Slept pretty good last night too.

The wife told me that we're supposed to be going down to the beach for a Halloween/Birthday party for someone she went to school with. It's got me a bit nervous. I made a promise to myself and all of you not to use nicotine today. I will keep that promise. No matter how much it sucks. I also promised myself that I won't drink tonight. I think it would be near-impossible to stay strong if I got a good buzz on. Its going to be rough though. I have a few numbers. I will use them if I need to.

Thanks again for the continued support everyone. Proud to quit with you today.

Good quitting right there! You have done 2 important things that will keep you quit and we can all learn from. The first is you gave your word, and you will keep it. The second thing is you have a plan for the day.
Good stuff, I'll quit with you today.

Off to a great start. Now just keep adding today to the list and you will be fine.

It really is amazing all of the things that can be done without a dip in your face.

Stay totally away from booze early in your quit. I have seen more than one quit wrecked by booze. You will have plenty of time for drinking when your quit is stronger.

Get up. Walk. Don't sit on your ass. Change your program. Change your routine. Be proactive not reactive. Come on now. Get up and let those quitter balls swing.

If you don't want to slip, don't go to slippery places.

I'd recommend walking that meal off. But do not head anywhere near a gas station or tobacco shop. Just had a hearty meal myself and had an immediate craving. Decided to head to the gym for a quick cardio sesh. Craving past and I have achieved homeostasis.

Don't give into that bitch/whore/ C U Next Thursday of Nicotine. The power is yours and I have faith in you to remain quit for today.

Best,
JMAC

Had a rough time sleeping last night. Worst insomnia I think I've ever had. I had a monster headache along with a serious nic-fit. Got up early and came down to LA for my other job. Feeling a little better now minus being extremely tired.

Not having a great morning, but I made a promise to be nicotine free today. I will keep my word.

Proud to be quit another day.

What he says is gospel - it WILL get better. Dude, I didn't sleep for shit the first month. Then it just went back to normal one day. The insomnia seems to be fairly common so don't sweat it.

Good job. Stay the course.

Week 1 complete! ... No craves today which is a great feeling. I am starting to feel sick though. Actually physically sick. Could it have something to do with going cold turkey after 7 years of what felt like constantly dipping? I feel like my body has been in shock all week and now I am getting sick. Maybe its just coincidence. Thoughts?

Here is my plan as of now.

Post roll every day.
Get phone numbers and use them if I feel like I might cave.
Offer my phone number to others.
No drinking (for the whole 100 days for me. Already took it out of my house)
No golf or fishing (should be easy because its winter)
I sent emails to my friends that dip to let them know that I am done. I asked them not to use around me and absolutely never bring me a can.
I stocked up on seeds, gum and Atomic Fire Balls already this morning. (to keep my oral fixation taken care of)

I'll gladly accept any additional advice you have.

If you want to be successful, don't wait until you feel like your going to cave to use your phone numbers. Entrench yourself in this place, attach yourself to people who wont let you fade away again. Make it so that if you don't post before lunch, you hear about it. At least through the worst of it. Other than that, I like your plan, all you have to do now is show us.

Think I'm posting this in here for Senor Taco and will be posting it over in 2x@'s intro as well.

I've been a medical professional and educator for a long time - corpsman (combat medic) in the Navy serving with the Marine Corps, teacher and dean of students, an emergency room nurse, and a coach. I started taking care of people medically when I was 15 - giving my mother injections of morphine for the pain she had related to her terminal cancer brought on by years of smoking. She died a month after I turned 16...on a Friday night while I was at my high school football game.

So, that means that I have spent more than half of my entire life taking care of others in some form or fashion. Trying to take care of others on here IS what it is about. Sure, I know, I contradict my own words - focus on your own quit first. Well, I am on day 700. I HAVE spent hundreds of days focusing on my quit, learning what parts of my plan work and what needs revision. I know that I am at a point where me being on here HELPING other to quit/stay quit benefits my quit and makes my quit that much stronger.

Watching knuckleheads fight the methods that have worked, that try and make it as if they are the only ones to have ever experienced what they are going through or try to pass themselves off as being abused make it painfully difficult to keep coming in here and reaching out to those that want the help.

Why am I posting this? So that you understand how everything you say and do on here is done in the public forum. That means everything you do and say has the potential of either building your fellow quitters up or tearing them down. Think of it like a big gamne of Jenga. I'm trying to carefully push and pull specific blocks in order to maintain the integrity of this system and some people want to shake the whole table... Each of the quitters on the site is represented by all those individual Jenga blocks...it can be a precarious system...be a block to make the stack rock solid....don't shake the table.

See, rage and funk can still hit you at 700 days...but the trick is learning how to deal with it in a way that isn't reaching for the can or simply walking away from posting roll, talking to your brothers or staying active on the site.

CoachDoc is now stepping off the soapbox and will be trying very hard NOT to step back on until at least the June class......

I hear what you're saying, Coach. Thank you for sharing your wisdom. And thanks in advance for your help throughout the most difficult times of my quit.

I HATE seeing you post day 1s!!! 'bang head'

How about you start drinking the kool-aide and own it this time.

Your life depends on it, will you do something different to save it and protect your quit?

What the F' dude...you've already been down this road. I just read this brief thread and suggest you re-read what CoachDoc posted to you a couple of years ago AND pour yourself a glass of that kool-aid from CBird's pitcher. So, again, how is this time any different and why should any of us have any inkling of trust that you will actually quit?

If you're serious about this, I expect to see you on roll every day and become active on this site. Otherwise, I'll assume you're just another retread and serial caver. Don't be THAT guy.

When I joined OA and AA my sponsor at the time told me I was one teaspoon away from a massive heart attack and one sip away from dying of cirrhosis of the liver. You can say the same about nicotine. We are all one single pinch away losing our faces and dying a painful, cancerous death. Make this one count.

Very disappointing you were one of the first people in our quit group!

I have thought about stopping posting once I got to 1000 days but I have been way to afraid to just stop!

Not because I think oh man as soon as I stop it will be back, but I am afraid of the complacency that ultimately leads to a cave!

Like CBird said "Own It!" Leave no reason for the return to Nicotine, lean on your quit group!
