Title: It's Time
Post by: humbledteacher on November 24, 2013, 06:32:00 PM
Hello. I've been addicted to nicotine for about 6.5 years and dipping for 4.5 years (a half a can to a can everyday). I've always known that I wanted to quit but have been telling myself that I'll quit in the future. At some point, we need to quit telling ourselves that we are going to do something tomorrow and instead do it today.

I began my quit yesterday morning and have been nicotine free for 35 and a half hours now. I was very hesitant about posting on this board because I'm stubborn and guess I just thought I could do things on my own. But after I continued reading, I realized this community can really help if I take advantage of it.

So far, I've had ups and downs. I haven't really experienced a fog but didn't sleep very well last night at all--kept waking up, sweaty despite my apartment being cold. This is the longest I've been without nicotine in probably 4 years so I knew it would be difficult. I've been using seeds and beef jerky to help. I'm most worried about going back to work tomorrow because most of my triggers stem from work, specifically driving to and from work. Any suggestions on fighting specific triggers?

Thanks! Heading to roll call to make my first post on there.

Congrats on a great decision. I wish i would have been as smart as you after only 4 years of use.

My advice is use all the tools of this site. Jump in and drink the quit kool aid. Start by going to the to left and read up in the welcome center. Learn how and why we post roll. Pay particular attention to why.

Next, load up on some alternatives. Gum, candy fireballs. Anything that doesn't contain nicotine.

One day at a time and you can have back a lot of what the poison had stolen. Never again for any reason and you can keep it. Need a number let me know.

Thanks for the response. I'll do my reading and will load up on some more seeds. You've been a great help already in being the first person to have my back. Thanks!

Nice job posting roll, and GREAT decision to end your slavery NOW. I was gonna quit for more than 20 years before I faced all the BS lies that kept me in the can.

Actually, stubborn is good. You will quit on your own. IMHO, we all quit on our own. You are the one that will or will not buy a can....run your thumbnail over the seam, take a pinch, insert. You are the one that will, or will not, make all those decisions. Nothing I/we can do about that.
What we can do is support your decision. We can show you how to burn bridges. We can let you know what to expect so you aren't surprised. We can tell you truths that your family/friend/sig other often times can not. What we can do is point out flaws in your plan. What we can do is applaud when you kick the nic bitch square in the mouth. And best of all, we can accept your word, your promise, that you will not use nicotine today, and hold you accountable to that promise.
No, this is very much still YOUR quit. We are just here to support a decision that you have already made...not to use nic today.

Welcome aboard. PM me if you need digits, or have any questions. (and you will need digits!). Read, read, read everything you can on KTC....and drink a LOT of water.

First. congrats on making a huge decision!
B. Embrace how much quitting sucks, thy way you'll never want to have to go through this shit again.
III. Do your reading and post roll daily (your group is march '14)
4. Need someone to talk at, the chat room is perfect, or just get ahold of me.
Last. I'd wish you good luck, but I'm sure you know it doesn't take luck, just a big ol sack.

Oh and WELCOME!

I just started this ride as well a few days ago. It's tough for sure, lots of gum, seeds, fake dip, jolly ranchers or whatever you need. I am on day 5 now and it does get better but I know I have a long ways to go. I don't try and worry about tomorrow, I worry about the day I am in.

I quit with you today!

The thing that's worked for me is fake chew. Theres tons of choices and plenty of info on it in the KTC website.

Check out the SMOKELESS ALTERNATIVES (http://www.killthecan.org/your-quit/smokeless-alternatives/) section.

I've been using the Bacc-Off. The cut is a little fine for what I'm used to, so I also have some Smokey Mountain Snuff on the way. I just order the stuff online but I've seen on the site that you can cruise right into Walmart and pick it up there too.

The biggest thing for me is that when a craving hits I get to go through all the motions of having a dip. It's actually not half bad and for the first couple of cans of the fake stuff that I used, it almost was like I was tricking my brain b/c the fake stuff TOTALLY satisfied the craving. Not quite as much now, but the cravings aren't quite as harsh as they were the first two days for me.

I've also noticed that I use almost the exact amount of fake chew as I did the regular stuff. Kind of interesting. We're such creatures of habit. Anyways... it may not work for you, but I don't know what I'd do without the stuff for right now. Eventually I plan to switch to seeds/lifesavers or something but right now... it's the only way :ph43r:

Great job on the role post yesterday and i'm glad your mind is in the right place. Post up early every day. You'll be surprised at how much posting roll will help you. You can keep your word for a day right? Find you some individuals in your group and outside your group to exchange numbers with. Everyone here knows what your going through and can help. Accountability is key!

You can pm anyone by clicking on the individuals name. You will see a block that says send personal message. There is also an inbox on your top right. Right now you'll see that there is a message there. Inbox (1). That will be because there is a message there from me. Check it out. Call or text anytime.

Spend all your extra time reading my friend. Learn your enemy. I'm thinking your a teacher of some sort. Maybe you already know all there is to know about nicotine and addiction. If you don't now would be a great time to find out why, who, what, when and where about nicotine. There is a lot of information on this site and others. I always say learn your enemy,, You can bet it knows you!

Your making your way to a door my friend. This door is hard to get to and open. I can't tell you how long it will take to get to this door, but I can promise you'll get there and like what's behind it. Keep your head pointed forward, settle in and make your way to the door one day at a time. Glad to be quit with you.

Thanks for all the support everyone! Day 4 today and I keep pounding the seeds like I never have. Technically, I guess the nicotine is out of my system but I know the fight has just begun! Good to be quit today.

"4 days is something to be proud of. The nic is out of your system so it's all fun and games now...right? Well F...guess what? Your body is use to living with nic and now it's mad and is about to really fight you.

The good news is that you understand how to use your tools and you have some good fight in you. The better news is that it gets so much easier very quickly. Now, I realize that "quickly" is a very relative term- as when you are suffering minute to minute, 5 or 6 weeks seem like 100 years. In reality, 5 or 6 weeks is not a very long time.

At this point, my triggers keep giving me flashes of "hope" (hope is a lie but that's what my brain tells my body). When I'm faced with a situation that I would ordinarily use in, I have this super brief but super strong craving that can seriously affect my mood and attitude for a little while. My brain says, "Yes, it's dip time" and I keep having to tell myself "No, never again." Today has been the hardest but I know it won't happen today because I posted roll. Will post roll again as soon as I wake up in the morning.

Atomic Fireballs have been helping and I've been destroying seeds.

Replace "never, again" with "not today". Forever can be a long time brother. Post your roll early, keep your word.....god willing you wake up tomorrow, repeat. Don't get ahead of yourself each day is battle enough for most of us. Keep it up, PM me if I can be of service.

4 days means you can make it to 5. Listen to jlud, he knows how to quit my friend. Your doing it because your determination and drive is winning. Great job. Failure is not an option at this point. Post roll and keep your word. Its going to get easier and its so worth it. I'm quit with you today.

Nice job bro. Keep battling. Focus on today and do what it takes to stay quit. When a crave hits use your tools to get your mind going in another direction. You are going to have to fight today. It will get better over time but for now... Relax, embrace the suck and stay quit today by whatever means necessary.

I'm staying strong but tonight has been the hardest night yet. I've got my wife yelling at me about spending more money on non tobacco products than I was when I was using. Do you want me to quit? Shes also complaining about how I'm acting different and crap. Maybe it's all just me and my cravings but dang. Tired but hanging in there.

ditto - get her to talk to us as well in the chat room, or over on facebook to ask questions. Never let this get ugly with her as she is one of the biggest supporters to help in your quit.

Hang tight, stay calm, be strong, give her a long slow deep soft wet kiss that lasts 3 days.. (ok may not be the exact wording from Bull Durham, but you get the pic).

From what i gathered you had a rough evening. You got my number, use it brother. The emotional roller coaster can and will be difficult at times. I remember one night sitting on my recliner with tears in my eyes. It was the turning point in my quit. I used the site, drive, determination, wife, and chat.

Whether you know it or not,, last night was a win. Think about it. You made it last night so you can darn sure make it tonight. Each win makes the next bad moment easier. Each trigger you face and beat down makes the next time that trigger comes easier. Your winning teacher!

Your going to be so happy you endured all this. Your building a new you and the new you is one bad dude. The new you doesn't need the poison, never did. The new you will handle stress better than ever. The new you will no long think he needs the poison to breathe. The new you will decide when and what he wants to spend his money on. He no longer will spend countless dollars on something as useless as a can of dirt. The new you will go through the day appreciating his family, life and the decisions he has made.

Hang in there,,, I promise, you will like the new you. I"m already liking the new person you are. He is showing, integrity, determination, drive and accomplishment. The new humble teacher is the type of person I like to associate myself with. Hang in there brother. Quit with you.

You are right on target. My wife asked me if I was leaving her at one point because I was acting so different.

I became a big dick and took it out on her a lot. I am sure that deep inside, I was wanting her to "make" me start dipping again.

My temper was back under control around the 65 day mark and I was able to make it up to my wife.

I started a similar daily posting to myself on "being nice to my wife"...

humbled,

Don't let the rage come out at your family - especially your wife. She didn't choose for you to use nicotine, and she shouldn't have to suffer while you are withdrawing from it. I know I was a total asshole for several weeks, but I got her to understand that I wasn't trying to be this way by getting her on the site like you suggested.

Hell, I had to go through it when she quit smoking the next year.

Find a way to make the crazy go away. Your brain is rewiring itself and in doing so it is bitching at you. You're going to gain weight. You're going to be crabby. You're going to find new ways of doing things. And then you will begin healing.

Start slow. Try not to engage in arguments with your wife. Come into chat and rage all you want. We can take it.

Quit on.

Yeah Bulldog, it was intense. I hear they don't happen to everyone but prepare yourself for a freaky experience. There was absolutely no relief in my dream cave--only regret, guilt, and disappointment. I think it made my quit stronger.

Congrats on getting past that 3 day mark. Those first 3 days were killer but I think days 4 and 5 may be a littler harder. Stay strong, man. I'm PMing you my digits if you need them.

Mark--Thanks, brother. Will do.

HumbledTeacher ; Another leader. He stays true to the spreadsheet, and true to KTC with 100% posts @ DAY 89. I'd say we know where this quit is headed. Can anyone say HOF?

Next itÂ’s off to the home of the infamous squid, John Calipari, and his annual crew of blue chip semi-pro ballers, Lexington, KY. This is the place where we are hog tying and duct taping a mutton loving High School English teacher who goes by the mysterious screenname of Humbledteacher. Did you ever see “The Substitute” with Tom Berenger? Humbledteacher would kick the shit of him. Humbledteacher is married with no children as of yet, though we conductors have the distinct honor of announcing to the KTC universe that he and his wife are expecting their first child in August! Congratulations!! Their first born will either be named Frazzled or Srans. A flip of his 100 Day HOF coin will determine who gets the honor. Anyway, these two KTC vets have helped Humbledteacher in his quit and provided him with valuable drive  inspiration, so he has decided to go ahead and honor these gentlemen by naming not just his first born, but his first two children after them.
Thank goodness he came to his senses and ended the nicotine madness 100 days ago. He started dipping when he was 18 and is now a rock solid quitter and spreadsheet keeper. He is also committed to continuing to the next big milestone of 200 days. Humbledteacher offers the following wisdom, “For me, it started about my quit and my quit alone. But through this site it became more. If I caved, I wasn't just letting myself down, I was letting down my brotherhood, my March group. Therefore, staying quit became more than just about me.” beautiful words man. This ties into his favorite movie quote from the Jimmy Stewart classic, “It’s a Wonderful Life” - “No man is a failure who has friends”.
We like this guy, and he likes the UK Wildcats, the St. Louis Cardinals, the Indianapolis Colts, and Breaking Bad. For his 1 year quit anniversary he will be trading his old hoopty Toyota Camry for a 2004 brownish/goldish colored Pontiac Aztec. HeÂ’s not a Chemistry teacher, heÂ’s an English teacher, so hopefully his criminal activity wonÂ’t go beyond dealing counterfeit first edition copies of Moby Dick  Catcher in the Rye in the back alleys of Lexington. For thhep arty on board he will be bringing Atomic Fireballs, sunflower seeds, and some books. But donÂ’t let this bookworm fool you, he picked up piano playing during his life and travels throughout the midwest. So hopefully weÂ’ll have some ragtime tunes as backdrop to our ongoing drunk poker game along with the vodka and mountain dew shooter sessions. He claims to not enjoy any inappropriate behavior, which is probably a good thing since he is in the teaching profession. His favorite avatar is Jdubthe2ndÂ’s picture of Gandalf. Glad he finally cleared up who the heck Jdub's avatar was, I was stumped.. I have tried to watch Lord of the Rings multiple times, but always fall asleep about 2 hours in. Welcome aboard Humbledteacher! We are very proud to quit with you.

Big shout out to an Iron stalwart of quit. Congrats Humbledteacher on hitting the one year milestone today. You've been a rock we are very fortunate to have quit with you for the past year. I look forward to racking up plenty more +1's with you, but I savor quitting with you today.
