Title: one day down
Post by: jcostigan on April 13, 2009, 10:56:00 AM
Well its been 24 hours and going on 25 hours.. I started dipping when I was about 15 or so. I have tried to quit several times. I am now 34 now. I have read before where people have quit for a year and started back. Heck. I have surpassed my longest so far. I have gone a full day several times but would cave. This morning I did something I never thought I had the courage to do. While cleaning up the house. I had one can left of Grizzly (half gone) I hadnt had a dip in about 23 hours at that point. I opened it up and the smell ... It stunk.. I threw it out. Last night I threw out all my spitters.. I am serious this time. My sons birthday is coming up, But most of all I am doing this so I can get rid of that can around my leg attached to the can of Grizzly..

So far I have gum, seeds, jerky.. I am trying to drink most water to flush my sysytem. I really do think all of you guys and the guys before you. I have read storys on here for about the the past 3 or so days.. It does help to see I am not alone in my battle.

Welcome John!....you can do this man. Use the site, read as much as you can and post roll every day. PM me anytime to chat.

Most of all, just hang in there without dipping tobacco....use seeds, the fake stuff, gum, whatever.....just no NIC. Again, you can do this!

You're at the worst part of it right now... Hang in there and things will get better soon. Don't allow yourself to question your decision to quit, just keep moving foreword and don't look back. For the next few days/weeks, remember this when you're craving: you already have several quit days under your belt, it will never be easier to quit than it is right now

I see that you posted in the July HOF group; you were in the right spot, but it's important to get your name on the roll call list promising not to use nicotine today. Follow the links below to learn more about why roll call is important and how to do it.

Feel free to send me a PM if there's anything I can do to help.

Roll call, why we do it your word by LOOT.

No problem, my brother. Glad you are doing better! We don't need that shit, even driving around in a car all day. Fuck it. Shit is nasty. My freakin' gums still KILL from the surgery which was 29 days ago.

Be careful of the coffee. Apparently nicotine reduces the effects of caffeine, and you can end up overdosing on caffeine when you quit dip even if you don't change your coffee consumption.

And, coffee might be a trigger for some people. It is especially known to be so for smokers. I would be lying if I didn't say that a dip just seemed naturally to follow a good cup of coffee, when I was dipping, of course.

Don't worry too much about your gums. Yes, they probably are losing their skin. Growing some fresh new skin under there which is not scabbed up by tobacco and all the additives. You might even find some bits of it floating around in your mouth.

Right on bro - you are winning - keep up the fight every day.

One thing you may consider - try sugarless gum - just might help you keep your teeth a bit longer :) However - what ever it takes to keep the nic out of your body. You can deal with the rest later :)

Congrats my friend - one day at a time.

For me, I turned into a gym rat. I've always been physically active, hell I'm the military so we kinda have to. Since I've quit, I focused all my energy to the gym. Right after work, I run two miles, hit the weights, then hit the heavy bag until I'm dead. This allows me to release all that damn rage that builds up over the course of a day that would have had me scrambling for a can a couple of months ago. Since I've quit, I've noticed a few things. My workouts are longer, I'm way stronger, and have much more stamina. Nicotine was a major part of our lives for a long time. Now that it's gone, there's a hole there. Fill that hole with something constructive. For me, it's my workouts. For you, it may be a hobby. Point is, replace it with something. It's worked wonders for me. I'm not the same person I was two months ago. I'm better, stronger, faster, and more importantly QUIT!

I had the same problem at first, and I still struggle with it. The best advice I can give you is to drink water, and lots of it! When you get hungry, drink a glass of water instead. You'll be surprised at how well it works. Also keep lots of healthy snacks around, like nuts, tuna, and carrots, and if you absolutely MUST snack, then snack on that.

day 5 down.. I had Swat training today.. A team member asked me about an hour into the training.. Did you quit dipping.. I looked at him and said Yeah. I then told him about the website. He has tried to quit before on Chantix (spelling ??) He was shocked.. I was the type to have a dip in 24 hours out of the day. I could run, shoot, anything. I had a dip in my mouth. I saw him dip today. I did have some craves. But I worked thru them. Today after eating lunch was tough but only lasted about a minute or so. I do not want to go back to day 1. I am that type of person if I want something I get it.. I am not going back to day 1.

I want to thank everyone for there well wishes..

Just some questions.. First off I am not going back to Nic

But, I think I may have high blood pressure now.. I am setting up appointment with Drs. Have anyone on here realized that they have high blood pressure or and I over reacting.. I have dipped for about 20 years. Partly I think it is the stress releif that I got from dipping. ?? Just wondering.

I find that I am really tired at times.. I sleep better too I guess.. Kind of wierd.. I guess my body is going thru some changes for the good.

Thanks all

High blood pressure is caused by the nicotine- it should nornamlize after a few weeks when your circulation improves- your body is healing and you are getting back to normal but it takes time and it hurts- hang in there!

I noticed effects for a long time after I quit. Anxiety was huge for me, but I eventually worked through it. I had given myself a full year to get resettled into working through things like a normal person, without the crutch of nicotine or antidepressants (or whatever else the doctors would to try to get me hooked on). I've been actively working to recover from these things, and I feel like it's mostly worked out now. I'm at 99 days and I feel great... that's 266 days ahead of the schedule I set for myself.

Another odd thing was a twitching right eyelid. It may sound trivial, but it continued nonstop for about three weeks starting at two weeks in, and it was maddening.

Bottom line: you've been poisoning yourself for YEARS; don't be surprised that it takes some serious time to heal.

Your comment about the eyelid twitching compelled me to post... HOLY SHIT!!! I had that too, especially when I was a SUPER dipping fiend. My hands were even shaky at the worst of my addiction.

I had no idea, back then, how I was really killing myself. I just thought I needed more.

If 100 days works for you guys in terms of seeing the last of the worst side-effects, then I am game.

Your blood pressure will drop. Mine has dropped almost 20 points in one month since I quit. I'm now cutting out salt to get it down some more. I was stage 2 hypertension, now I'm down to stage 1. The doc reccomended cutting out fatty foods too, which I'm doing.

That eyelid twitching will go away. I haven't had it happen to me in weeks.

Mine was to, but I know my mind and body were quite stressed during that first month. I bet it is still a little elevated... I'm not gonna worry just yet. I was pinging off the walls about the sores in my mouth and the general aches and pains of my quit.

Our bodies are still adjusting... but my wife and I are monitoring my BP just in case. You should too.

My blood pressure before.. It was borderline.. I love red meat, KY bourbon (since they make it where I live same town) and used to love a dip.. All those in mind you would think my BP would be high.. It was border line. Now it is mind blowing that sometimes I am walking and not in pain or freaking.. It is running about 150 - 160 over 80-90s .. It used to run about 120-140 over 70-80s.

Around day 30 I am going to see my doctor and see about my health.. I am also gonna see my dentist to see about my mouth.. Nothing to note in there, but I am no dentist.. I have heard its a good idea to see the dentist around day 30. Especially since I have been dipping since 15 or so.. 20+ years..

I'll tell you what brother, CopeFiend and I talked about something very similar just yesterday. He accused me (jokingly of course) of planning my own cave... my immediate and most decisive response was...

"No fucking way brother, because I will NEVER go thru that first week EVER again."

Good choice John, hang in there. We are with you!!!
