Title: Time to lay it down.
Post by: packfan1967 on January 20, 2011, 10:14:00 AM
Hi all. Wanted to introduce myself. My name is Gary Emery and I am from Southern Illinois. Married with 4 kids.

My official last dip was taken on 1/9/11.
I dipped a can (or more) a day for the last 30 years. Started with Kodiak, moved to Skoal, and downgraded to Grizzly natural fine cut when the price continued to rise.
In 1989 my Dad had a massive stroke and was diagnosed with lung cancer and given 3-6 months to live. Long story short. He beat it despite the hospital refusing to give him chemo. Did he quit smoking? No. In 2009 he was diagnosed with chronic emphysemia AND cancer of the lung once again. This time he was given chemo and it went into remission towards the end of 2010. Did he quit smoking? No! So, I made myself a promise that I would take my last dip on 1/9/11 which I did. On 1/11/11 I called my Dad to check in with him and tell him that I had quit. Before I could he tells me that he now has cancer in his throat and has quit smoking!
Nicotene is a BITCH! but I refuse to fail. I will not call my kids, sometime in the future, and inform them I have throat/lip/mouth cancer and still have a dip in my mouth.
I've had a complete cancer screening and am clean for now. I hope it stays that way.

Anyhow, wanted to introduce myself.

Gary

Congrats and welcome! Post roll early everyday, read everything you can and get involved. Most importantly, shout if you need anything.

You can do this, so I shall leave you with a little incentive.

Welcome to the fight Gary, congrats on your decision. I was two cans a day for 23 years,I am now 724 days quit, if I can do it so can you. START READING, everything you can fiind on here, get educated. It'll help. You might have to live on the site for a bit, but it beats making that phone call to your kids. You got this
