Yesterday, I made the decision to quit dip. I took my last pinch of kayak grape and realized how stupid I am and how this is something i need to end now. I dipped for around 6 months. I was a ball player and there was a lot of downtime during the season and I would go through around a can a day or every two days. After this weekend I had a sore throat that has continued til today. I had a crazy weekend with my buddies, so maybe that is it. I was just hoping you guys could help me and let me know if you guys think it may be a pre sign to cancer since my throat has felt wierd for awhile now. It hasn't been sore but it has felt different for about a month now. I am seeing the doctor for a shot on friday and I will ask him there to see if he can check for signs. Also, I am going to the dentist for a cleaning on the 18th and I am going to ask them to check for stuff.
I was hoping I could get some feedback on what you guys think this sore throat could be? I was also wondering if any of you tried the fake dip and if that helped you.
Thanks for reading.

It very well could have something to do with the guy weekend.....but that's a bit off topic.
Seriously, its most likely the fact that your mouth is going through a ton of changes including healing itself. It's most likely nothing to worry about. When I first quit I was quite sure I was going to die. Give yourself a couple weeks or so to cool out. Certainly the doctor and dentist are a good call.
Congrats on your decision and welcome to the site!

Let's see...
In all likelihood you have a sore throat - nothing more, nothing less. That said, going to the doc and dentist is never a bad thing. Get checked out and take this opportunity to QUIT. Embrace it, use that fear and be done... now. Today.
As for the fake stuff, I used it extensively during my quit. It's not a perfect substitute for your chew but it was the only thing that kept me quit sometimes.
Well worth it in my opinion.

Thanks for your replies guys, means a lot to me. I think I am going to try the fake dip, just so i can kill the oral sensation that i am craving. I jsut wish the doctor and dentist appointments came a little sooner for that peace of mind.

Did any of you guys get discomfort under your chin, felt like you had a chicken gobler? Its been a day and a half and the gobbler thing has been going on for a month or so. Any of you guys get this type of symptom?

Yep... had it.
It's gone now... you may experience all kinds of aches, pains, etc. for quite a while. Hang in there... they go away.

Two things, one Chewie's right I had all sorts of shit that worried me in the beginning, second thanks for reminding me about fall Turkey season, I need to get my App in. 'crackup'

Alright cool, thanks guys.

I just picked up some herbal hooch and I was wondering if you guys had any ideas on how to make it pack better. It falls apart a little bit and it doesn't burn as much as I would like. Does putting Alcohol in the dip make it burn better and pack better?
Week Free from dip and the cravings have died down a lot.
-
Hey Guys, I am now about 3 weeks clean from dip. I quit on the 11th of August. I still get urges, but just use herbal stuff and I feel a lot better about my overall health. But I have been having some symptoms lately and I was wondering what to do about them:
Sore Throat -- has been coming on and off over the past weeks.
Tounge -- My tounge feels wierd. Like under it feels dry and just overall uncomfortable.
Are these normal, or should I be worried. I went to the dentist last week and she gave me a cancer check and said I looked fine, but I still cannot help but worry. Sometimes it hurts to swallow and it feels like my neck has a limited range of motion. Under my chin feels wierd at times as well.
I was just wondering if you guys could give me your thoughts about this and if you have experianced this, can you give me some tips to make them go away?
Thanks Guys!
-
Do you have allergies?
I have allergies this time of year. One of the symptoms is a dry itchy throat.

Yep... had them all.
Sore throat, earaches, headaches, fuzzy throat, crawling jaw, thick tongue, etc.
As for advice - keep doing what you're doing (not dipping). All I can tell you is that it DOES get better... promise.

Boyer I went to the dentist last week too. Got a series of xrays and the one that does the panoramic view and I got an A+. But after 150 days (today) I still don't feel right. In short, my mouth feels yucky. Dry like you said, horrible breath. I brush constantly and my mouth looks great according to them. But it feels like shit.
I don't know the physiology of tobacco and what it does to the mouth, i mean we've heard stuff but i dont have the facts, but it's obvious it fucked us up real good. I have heard that it takes a year, i dont know if that's true or not.
As far as the neck is concerned, i have had some major neck surgery about 11 years ago, non dip related, but again like you i do have occassional soreness and stiffness.
Sore throats, many. I have allergies and also susceptible to canker sores since I was little.
Again, I thought the sore throats would die down when I quit, they have a little, and the canker sore are truely that, canker sores, where as before some of them were that white shit you get from dipping.
so have i really confused you? lot of us are in the same boat, it depends on your make-up. I wouldn't worry. just keep an eye on everything.
-
Haha, no i get what your saying. I didn't get any xrays, but they poked around in my gums and under my tounge, looked down my thorat etc. It sucks but i'd rather feel like shit without dip than feel good with it.

This sounds perfectly normal...if you've been ramming cock down your gizzard.

I've been trying to quit dip for awhile now, in and off battles. I joined this site and failed on my quit, i made it 3 weeks and was feeling good. Friday i got drunk and pressured into it. I have not done it since and i never will. Before i caved my dentist checked me for cancer and said i looked fine. Today I am sick. I threw up and now under my chin feels like i am going to throw up again. I'm petrified that i may have cancer. I promised myself that I will not do it again. I do not want cancer. Can you guys help me?
I feel like there is something in my throat.
Under my chin feels awful, like you do right after you puke
my stomach hurts, feel like i am going to puke.
my tongue is really dry.
I am never going to pack a lip again. I am so scared right now. can you guys help me?
-
boyer, I am dealing with my 2 children right now, and I can't go to chat right now.....but you need to.
Log into chat right now, and talk to someone. There should be someone in there. I will go to chat later when I can.

Ahhhh yes.....I remember self-diagnosing myself with cancer several times after I quit. Each time I remember thinking to myself "How effed up is it that I get cancer once I quit". My diagnosis was always wrong. But it is some pretty scary shit, isn't it? More than likely you are just fine, but for peace of mind go to the doctor if you need to.
Whatever you do though, don't give up! Take this fear and use it. Let it help power your quit. Stay at it and all this will pass. If you need anything let me know.

Same here. On week three and all kinds of funky shit keeps popping up in my mouth. It always goes away and it most likely due to the change in chemistry in there but man it can freak you out.
Just use it to make sure you never have another chew.

We talked a bit last night in chat but wanted to leave you with something this AM as well....
Welcome to my world my friend. I'm sorry to say that you're experiencing the same feelings of dread that I did (and still do now and again). I'm not a doctor so I'll just be talking from personal experience here - keep in mind that your mileage may vary.
Since I've quit, I've diagnosed myself with lung, throat, brain, stomach, mouth and ovarian cancer. I've also had 2 heart attacks (which I took myself to the ER for both times), had extreme anxiety, had acid reflux, GERD insomnia.
I've even had rare forms of diseases that no one has ever fucking heard of but I developed because I quit dipping after 16 years. Oh yeah, almost forgot an inner ear imbalance cause I was so fucking dizzy during my 3 months of fog.
Needless to say, I'm still here, alive and kicking. I don't have any of those things (with the exception of acid reflux which I had LONG before I quit dipping).
I still to this day worry when I get a sore throat or a sore in my mouth. I always tell people that a good rule of thumb is if something sticks around for more than 2 weeks then you should go get it checked out. jerry (from December 06) is a dentist and he told me the same thing (during one freak out episode a while back where I was sure that this was the end). I've found that going to the doc/dentist does wonders for peace of mind, but in the end of the day does nothing for you except get you another co-pay.
Here's the way I look at things these days - I chewed for over 16 years... and during ALL of that time, I NEVER had anything wrong with me... no sores in my mouth, no cancer, no heart attacks, etc... Wouldn't it be HIGHLY ironic and coincidental if ALL of this shit happened NOW... AFTER I QUIT?
Like I said, there's nothing wrong with getting checked, but chances are you're out thinking yourself.
Remember this - you've done the best thing that you can do for your future health... you've quit. We can't go back and undo all of that damage that we've done so I don't bother thinking about it at this point.
Move forward day by day... it's worked so far for me ;)
Sorry for the rambling - let me know if there's anything else I can do for you.

Let me get this straight. Last Friday, after a good check up from the dentist, after having been quit for three weeks, you went out with your bro's. Your bro's proceeded to get you drunk, pin you down on the ground, open a can of dip, and shove it in your face?
Do I have this right?
Sounds to me like the dentist said "all clear" and you heard "green light".
I'm guessing you are sick because you had already rid your body of nicotine (for three weeks), had a dip and are now going through withdrawls again. I'd even venture to guess that your guilt is playing a part in this as well.
Pressured? BS, find new friends, punch them in the face, dump out their cans if they offer, walk away. This is yours and don't let anyone fuck with it.
Drunk? BS, there is no amount of beer that will overcome the decision to quit. Think about that for a bit.
Have a plan for these situations and be willing to use it when needed.
Glad to see you posted a day 4.
Never again.
Let me know if you need anything.
-
Thanks for the responses guys. Means a lot. I can be easily influenced sometimes, especially if alcohol is present. Friday was a slip that will never happen again. I dont want to go through the fear anymore. I went to see a nurse practitioner today, she said she thinks it is a stomach bug and when i threw up i may have stretched the muscles under my chin. It still feels pretty wierd today, but I am feeling a little better. I want to thank chewie and everyone in chat last night, calmed me down a little, but i only got 45 minutes of sleep which sucked.
The nurse said to come back in two days if i dont feel any better.
Redtrain, I think i am going to buy some smokey mountain and carry that around with me in case i get put in that situation agian. I felt so bad once i put it in from what i remember, only had it in for 2 minutes and hated every minute of it. I was kind of reluctant to tell you guys about it cause i didnt want everyone to hate me, but i realized that if you guys held me accountable for my actions and i barely know you then i should tell you guys. I felt so guilty and you guys gave me tough love but so far everything that has been posted has been very helpful. I have not got that post from someone screaming at me, even though i deserve it.
Thank you all for your help the other night,
Day 4 and counting,
Matt

Matt, you can only gamble so many times before the house wins. Now that you have learned that booze will cause you to cave, be smart this time and put down the bottle until you can handle it without having a dip. Also, the idea of dumping a can if it's offered is really sound advice. It might cause a fist to cuff, but you can be sure that nobody will offer you a dip again!!!
Caving is for pussies and fucktards...the fact that you came clean and started over proves that you are not either of these. This is your "do over", and I know that if you cave again the support will turn to humiliation and you will feel less than human. Do you want all of us to turn on you?????? That would not be good!!!
-
No, I am done forever. Never again.
-
I feel like death today. Everything in my mouth hurts today. gums, throat, jaw, tounge pain, dry mouth, dry tounge.... awful.
Day 4 and counting.

I haven't slept at all the past two nights. I have been tired, but there has been no sleep. I am like depressed too. I don't know why I am having such a bad time lately, jsut got back to school, should be having fun. I only dipped for four months... what is wrong with me?

imagine dipping that horseshit for 20 years, I know its not easy in the beginning no matter how long you chewed for. Nicotine is a horrible drug and it will fuck with your head to no end, your body is transistioning back to a normal state, mood swings , sleep problems, headaches etc are all normal just hang in there and be thankful your smart enough to stop now.

Go easy on the coffe and coke, the caffeine is going to hit you a lot harder now, that will probably help you sleep a little better. Drink lots of water.

hate to say it but you gots a good case of the dontgiveaflyingshits.....Those combinied with occassional bouts of insomnia, especially pre-HOF were the worst part of my quit. Everything and i mean EVERYTHING seems to take a ton of effort.....work, kids, whatever you do for fun....hell, i remember even sex didn't hold it's usual allure.....
Let me tell you one thing i have learned.........
It will pass.....and when it does...you will feel empowered just a little bit over your addiction..
Trust me....the skies will once again turn blue....the birds will sing again.....and nooky will once again regain it's mystical status in that warped little mind
Coupla things will help you thru it.......get involved in someone elses quit.....doesn't matter who or how....just bulldoze your way into giving a shit about thier quit....you will be amazed at how much stronger your own quit will become.
secondly....get pissed....really pissed at big tobacco. Those fuckers knew you would become addicted and they intentionally make a product that when used properly....will kill you and force you to continue to line thier pockets until it does.
Make it your mission in life.....to never give these bastards another dime of your money.....and take as many of thier customers with you as you can.....
sing out if I can help you.....
you got this...do not back down.

Just my observation, it sounds pretty smart for someone who only dipped for 4 months to ALREADY REALIZE he was addicted. I'm certain it happened that fast for nearly all of us, but hardly any of us idiots have figured it out (or payed attention to the fact) until many years have passed.
Also, to Mule21, thanks for posting that advice. Getting involved in someone else's quit at this stage (my third day)...I wouldn't have thought of it, not feeling yet qualified. Would like to help the other guy either get away from chewing tobacco or never come near it.

Hey guys, the nurses at school gave me benadryl last night to get some sleep. I feel better today, i ate well and felt good. My tongue still feels tired and at times it feels as something is stuck in my throat (a symptom of mouth cancer) and i start to freak again. Start to kick and twitch... its tough it really is. I just wish i never did this in the first place.... Also under my chin feels really wierd at times, like heavy and sore. That also sucks. I appreciate everyone helping me get through it.
Mule, Chewie, Gump, and anyone else i forgot. Thanks a lot guys... means a lot to me.
-
btw my tongue is white, just happened today, it may be from the mouthwash and toothpaste, but i have geographic or benign tongue. Normal or no?

Normal.
Remember - there's all kinds of weird shit going on in your body/mouth. There are two good rules of thumb when it comes to quit:
1. Anything that happens in the first 50-60 days of your quit, you can attribute to your quit.
2. Don't worry about anything weird (bumps, cuts, white spots, etc.) in your mouth unless they stick around for more than a couple of weeks.
I'm not a doctor, but based on my experiences and the experiences of thousands of quitters here these are pretty good to follow.
