Hello Killthecan.org community,
My name is Todd, I am 37 years old and live in the rural Appalachian Mtns. of Virginia. I started experimenting with snuff at the age of 12 and by the age of 13 I was dipping a can a day up until 8-18-13. My brand was skoal fine cut wintergreen, but I had moved to Long-cut the last few years. I had been planning to quit this summer. My parents got me the nicotine patch and the nicotine gum for Father's Day back in June. I wanted to wait until Dog Days were over this summer before I tried to quit. I am married, we have three kids a 19 yo son, a 12 yo daughter, and a 9 yo boy. I am an RN. I went directly to Nursing school after high school and have been a nurse for 16 years now. I have worked ER, Critical care, Adolescent psych, Adult psych, and I am now a pediatric case manager for special needs (cerebral palsy and other brain injury) patients. Last week I found out that a guy that grew up three houses up the street from me died. He found out in Jan. of 2013 that he had mouth cancer and died 2 weeks ago, mid-Aug. 2013. I didn't know him that well but I remember him. He was 5 years older than me growing up. A good guy, he had 2 kids just living a normal life; coaching baseball and working-typical dad/family guy it seems. But now that life is gone. It hit me hard. I want to beat this beast. I don't know how you guys view nicotine replacement, but I am on the patch and plan to taper down. It seems to be helping. I am using the Smokey Mtn. Wintergreen Herbal snuff, which has helped a great deal with the mental aspect of having the oral fix/hobby. I have tried in the past: Nicotine gum-failed (too much chewing), Wellbutrin-failed (insomnia side effect-very bad stuff), Zyban-failed (terrible stuff-could not even think right at all). Dont be too hard on me for using the patch-I am giving it my best shot to quit I am really tired to dipping. I am worried about triggers though, I have a very active outdoor life and dipped at all times in the past hunting, coaching, fishing, camping, riding dirt bikes-you name it I was dipping. :(
-
you're not gonna get a pass on the patch...rip it off and hold on tight...you'll go through the withdrawals whether you taper down or go cold turkey. If you rip off the patch you'll look back at yourself in a few weeks and laugh at yourself...ask Erussell about that. Anyhow, read all you can. It will help
-
Todd,
Here at KTC we quit cold turkey; no nic gum, no patches, nothing but a bad ass and some replacement stuff (fake dip, gum, WTFE). It is not easy but then again neither is raising three kids which you know as well.
I will send you a PM, for you to review. Remember that you cannot post roll until you are off Nic completely. Believe it or not it helps.
My PM will describe thigns much more and hopefully will help you. It is great and yet unfortunate that cancer affected/afflicted someone so close to you. You have to want to quit and own it every day. The Nic bitch is tricky and right now she has you believing that you are weak.
In the PM is my phone number feel free to call or text anytime I would be happy to help you brother.

Thanks, I am considering doing just that-Taking it off and taking it like a man-but I want to be successful at this-Is this the smartes thing to do?

We all believe so, KTC has a proven track record.
-
with the patch...i really think you won't be successful...you are administrating nicotine still. I'm was never really one to dump on guys for using replacements until someone asked if you would use a little bit of cocaine to quit cocaine.
-
How long do you think the withdraw from nicotine lasts? They may have to lock me up in a room somewhere. How long before things feel remotely normal?
-
Its a scary step to take, Todd, but only because the addiction is making you scared. The patch keeps you addicted to nicotine, you just dont have a dip in your mouth. Might as well smoke a cigarette. (well not exactly the same, but you get my point).
Get rid of the patch when you're ready to quit. It sounds like you've got some motivation to quit right now (or why else would you be here?) - if so, take off the patch and free yourself, and post up a Day 1 here on KTC.
Use any non-nicotine tools to help you quit - fake chew, gum, hard candy, and sunflower seeds will keep your mouth occupied. There is no way to get around the nicotine withdrawal symptoms, tho - you just have to go thru them. The good news is that it can absolutely be done! look around here at all the quitters to find some inspiration, and lets do this!
-
How long do you think the withdraw from nicotine lasts? They may have to lock me up in a room somewhere. How long before things feel remotely normal?
Nic is out of your system within 4.5-5 days; the withdrawals last quite some time, the urges or the mental needs for Nic may never go away.
There is no need to be locked up in a rubber room; just redirect any anger to where it is deserved, the family is certainly not that. Call me and yell at me daily if you want, be pissed at big tobacco.
Get angry about all of it and take it out on the root cause or use it to fuel your quit.
It is not easy at all but take you hand, check to make sure then use those balls to own this quit.
-
How long do you think the withdraw from nicotine lasts? They may have to lock me up in a room somewhere. How long before things feel remotely normal?
One thing you DONT wanna do is think further ahead than today. Thinking about how hard it is to quit "forever" will surely kill your quit in the early stages.
Our mantra here is One Day At A Time (ODAAT). Don't worry about forever, next week, or even tomorrow - just quit today. Thats all. Do whatever you need to do to get thru today without nicotine. when you wake up tomorrow, you will do the same thing - but dont worry about that today.
PS: to answer your question, it gets better the further you get into your quit. You can still have difficult moments anytime you're quit. But they get fewer and farther between, and they decrease in intensity over time, the longer you are quit.
I rarely ever have a crave nowadays, and when I do I laugh at it because I know there's no way I"m gonna mess up my quit.
SO just quit today, and keep quitting for today, everyday, and you will get there!

I concur,
Thinking beyond today is a daunting overwhelming thought. But Today, even this hour, You can handle not dipping for an hour. You can handle not dipping for a day. I am speaking from what i went through, I am still going through. Its not impossible, it is very possible to kick the nic bitch's ass. Many many vets on here to prove it.
There is no magic pill or potion that will make all they cravings go away, its the sheer will and determination, to not let a poisonous, cancerous weed control every single aspect of your life. Get angry at her, take all your frustrations out on her (nic bitch, lil monster, depending on who you're talking to). Its easy to be snippy at loved ones, friends and co workers. Remember its not them making you ornery.
PM me if you need anything
Thanks

ToddRN,
I chewed for 20 years and for the last five years of my addiction I attempted to quit literally dozens of times. I tried everything, including nicotine gum. KTC's ways are the only thing that worked for me.
Here are a couple of things to note:
-Your free will IS stronger than your brain's current addiction to nicotine.
-Nicotine withdrawal isn't the terrifying white-knuckle nightmare that you're anticipating. It isn't easy, but you can do it.
-Quit now. Enough is enough. Dig down deep and find some rage for the chemical that has enslaved you your whole life.
-Jump head first into KTC. Exchange phone numbers, READ from the introduction pages, and get your head right.
-Remember the two rules of this place: Post roll every damn morning, and honor your promise.
Don't think about hunting, fishing, etc. Just worry about today.
I can't wait to see what you have to say on Day 7.
-
Todd,
Glad to see you made the choice to quit. I myself made the choice almost a month ago (four days short to be exact). Just wanted to say a couple things that were said to me;
1. Quit the nic patch. You don't need it. Put on your big boy pants and man up. Plenty of us here have done it, no reason you can't. It's not easy, but it can be done.
2. Think about your family, how bad will life suck for them if you get cancer and leave this world? That thought alone helped me a ton.
3. Post roll every day. It might sound stupid, but it helps.
4. Find a quit buddy, someone who can keep you accountable. Swap digits. Text or call when you're having a rough day. If you can't find anyone PM me, I'll hold your feet to the fire : )
5. As I said before, be a man. As a man our word is our bond. You owe it to yourself to stay quit. If you say your'e going to do something, then do it.
Hope I didn't come off as a turd, and I truly mean no disrespect. Some things just need to be said. But seriously if you can't find a quit buddy pm me.
Congrats on your decision, it's awesome to get your life back!

Glad you are here.. You don't need the patch. It is just the evil nic-bitch finding a way to get nicotine into you. Just trash the patch, tell the nic-bitch that you are done with her for today, post roll and start living life as a free man.
You got some great advice from others as well. Read, read, read, drink a lot of water, have sunflower seeds, fake chew, coffee beans, whatever at hand. Exchange digits with anybody and everybody on here.
PM me and I will send you mine.
-
Welcome Toddrn. You've got some great advice from some bad ass quitters,,, nothing i can add really.
Now if you don't mind i would like to talk to your master. If you do mind to bad, you aren't in control of anything, it is.
Poison, I hate you. I'm so glad i took my life back from you. You had me bound for to long. I hope my friend toddrm sees you for what you really are before its to late. I hope he eventually can see that all you do is take until there is nothing left. I hope my friend listens to all this sound advice and takes his life back. I hope my friend here stops giving you his hard earned money, while you steel his freedom, integrity and cause him to question his dignity. I'm so happy now that your out of my life.
Screw the poison, screw any and every form it comes in. Join me toddrn,, you won't be sorry. If you don't , you will!!
Rip that patch off and quit,, you got nothing to lose, everything to gain. i would love to quit with you today. Your move....
-
How long do you think the withdraw from nicotine lasts? They may have to lock me up in a room somewhere. How long before things feel remotely normal?
Whats up, Todd? Did you rip that patch off and quit yet? lots of us here are waiting to quit with you, right along side of you today. Let us know where you're at, bro.
I'm a 30-year dipper of copenhagen, from age 15 to 45, and now I'm quit for 227 days. If I can do this, you can too. But you have to take the first step. Its the best decision you will ever make for yourself.

Just read that you might be patching it up. I hope I misread because you are waisting your time and giving another dealer money for nicotine. Have no idea on how long until you swear off nicotine completely.
Quit and its 72hours on withdrawls. Then its all emotional gaming. Feeling better hit me at 30.
So if you are patching it up. You will feel like shit until you stop patching and fight through 30 day.

Come on, Todd, lets do this bro. Dont wait until your health is ruined to quit. You dont want this:

Take your life back, man - the freedom is amazing! Its not as bad as that little voice in your head is telling you - But you do have to do the work to get there. So how 'bout it?

I think its a waist of time trying with this guy.. He never even logged back it after 1:30 yesterday. He doesn't have it in him to quit. He likes living in canville where your master is the poison.
You got to reach deep you want to quit. The easy out is suckling with the poison. Maybe another year or two he'll come back if its not to late.
The poison has taken more from him than he even knows.

I am here. Took the patch off. Real tired today. Slight headache. Eyes feel blurry but not really blurry. Using fake dip. Cant think/focus well. After meals is a bitch.
-
You guys sure this is the best way? Without a taper, it seems all shitty. I am quitting or I wouldnt have gone this far. I am tired and tired of dipping. It is so hard to focus. This sucks so bad. I really didnt realize how the nicotine really affected me. I guess when your on it you dont feel it. I dred the constipation most of all. Will I ever be not so tired?

glad you finally made the choice to be a quitter Todd.
You are going through the suck right now, cleansing your body of poisons. This will take a few days. Drink water, exercise. The fog may last a while longer as your brain starts to re-wire to life without nicotine. Many quitters have made it through both, so can you. But you got to want your quit more than you want to return to chew.
Don't focus on your loss of tobacco or how much you miss it. Focus on reading about your addiction, learning why all those fond memories of chewing are false, just another nic lie to keep you using...
-
One more thing, or two: 1) Best herbal? Already tried Smokey Mtn-Ok best so far I guess, weird texture, weird taste and Bacc OFF-not a fan so much flavor gone too soon, Oregon Mint-rubs my gum raw, like the taste and it last, but the rub is pretty bad on an already raw gumline. Any thoughts on Hooch?
2) Not clear about posting roll. Any link aval.?

AWESOME Todd!!!!! that is great! the first 4-5 days are the worst, but it slowly does get better after that. Tapering just prolongs the misery, trust me. There is no easy way, bro, you just have to go thru it. But I can promise you it does get better as time goes on. Just stay quit today!
yes, headaches, fogginess, those are all typical. Your brain is beginning to rewire itself to work 'normal' instead of with a drug supply. hang in there bro, I'm quitting today right along side you.

NICE... I hope you didn't just take it off and leave the box of them sitting on your counter. You need to go all in and toss those things.
Now that you have tossed the patch, "Welcome." You are now a man who can, and should post roll. Go to your November group and make your pledge to yourself and to us that you will not use nic today.
You will feel pretty darn weird all day, and it isn't going to be fun, but we are here. You can post to your intro, get on chat, and read, read, read.
As was told to me, your KTC library card is one of your greatest tools.
Quit with you.

This is how to post roll, which is your promise to your group to NOT use any nicotine that whole day.

you'll be in the November 2013 group (thats when you'll hit 100 days quit, and make the Hall of Fame).
As far as fake - none of them taste like copenhagen. Personally I like the pack and feel of Hooch the best - but it doesn't taste very good IMO. Whiskey flavor was probably the best one.
If you were a mint/wintergreen chewer, there are fakes that more closely match that taste. Try Smoky Mtn Arctic mint.

Posting roll--- go to the pink welcome center button to your top left. Click on quit groups. Look for Pre- HOF November (you will read why) and post in there. It is a little cumbersome at first, so read the link in there about how to do it.
as for fake stuff--- It really is a personal choice. I ended up feeling more comfortable just going through bags of sunflower seeds. I also attempted my own fake chew.A piece of coffee filter wrapped around a 50 50 mix of coffee grounds and brown sugar.
Some folks just through a couple coffee beans in. Whatever works. Nothing will seem exactly right, but as long as it doesn't have nicotine, it really doesn't matter.
Eventually you won't need them, but it sure makes life easier at first.

Good point, Cal. Todd, get all forms of nicotine out of your life. Empty your cans (all of them, even the stashes in the glove box and golf bag) into the toilet and flush! Trust me, if you just toss the cans into the garbage, you're gonna be thinking about it constantly, it will be a constant temptation.
Also get rid of the used and unused patches. I know they cost money but if you keep them, you're more likely to go back to them in a moment of weakness. Trust us.
Commit to this quit, and destroy them now.

Welcome brother. I hope your aren't upset with my earlier posts. I just wanted you to see the truth about the poison. It is so hard to see the truth initially. The poison lies and makes you believe you can't live without it. It makes you think that life is going to suck without it. It controls every aspect of your life because you are always trying to figure out how the poison is going to fit in your schedule. You have to always consider if you have enough to last with every occasion.
I'm here to tell you it's all a big lie and after time you will kick yourself right in the ass for ever putting that filthy disgusting dirt in your pie hole.
I noticed you asked a lot of questions and I would like to answer a couple.
You asked what's good herbal/fake dip? The answer is simple. Whatever fake keeps the real out. If you have to make your own special brew to keep the real crap out of your pie hole,, do it. After time you will find that your brain wants one thing and that's nicotine. It isn't going to like any particular brand of fake. I used smoky mountain for a while. It did help some, but don't think for one second it's a cure for craves and withdrawals. The only remedy for craves and withdrawals is time. Each day you go without the poison the easier things get.
My favorite question of the day really is the easiest. You asked if this ( cold turkey) is the best way. Listen brother,,,,,,,,, IT'S THE ONLY WAY TO QUIT. THINK LONG AND HARD ABOUT IT. ANY OTHER WAY IS NOT QUITTING!!!!
One day at a time (ODAAT) and you can have a lot of what the poison has stolen. Never again for any reason ( NAFAR) and you can keep it. You can do this,, don't think for one second you can't. You need some more digits let me know. Anyone you want to pm, just click on their name and you will see their information come up. Then click on personal message. You made the right decision,, stay quit. It will get better.
-
How's it going, ToddRN? Keep up the dialogue going, it will help. You have a LOT of quitters paying attention to your quit! Keep going!
-
Todd,
I hope you are doing well today. As you can see there are a good many people here to help you brother. As for the fake dips I never dipped Wintergreen but Smokey Mountain Wintergreen is my favorite and thought expensive I like Teaza as well, but it tastes like coffee.
Quit strong man, it will get better. Call if you need anything.

I've been wondering the same thing rick?? Maybe he's busy with stuff today,, work and all. Maybe he's got a lot going on and don't have time to tell the world he's quit today and make his promise. I hope this is the case...
I don't want to mention the alternative.

Alright todd it's truth time. You never even made it past the first day did you? No roll post yesterday and you never logged back in after 4 pm the first day.
You were patching it up before the end of the first day I bet. If not,, you were knuckle deep in a can of poison. Doesn't matter,,, SAME THING!
I know quitting and gaining control of this addiction is hard, hell it was the hardest thing I ever did. You have to give it time though. If you come here and post roll, ask for help and use this site to fight the withdrawals and other symptoms you can do it.
I know your tired of slavery to a can,, or you wouldn't have come here and you wouldn't be trying to use alternatives that do not work. Who do you think created all these alternatives. Just in case your confused,, its the same companies that fill a tin can full of poison.
When you do get the balls and rrrrreeeeelllyyy want to quit come back, we are here to help you.
Slavery,,, I'm so glad i'm not you.

Todd - here's some words of wisdom why using the patch today and quitting tomorrow just wont work.

No, still no nicotine. I have been busy this week. I have been going to a church revival all week so not much time to get online. Thanks for the support though and sorry for the doubters. I am still in the fog though, still real tired and lack concentration. Getting hungry when I dont normally get hungry. Not sleeping that well either.
-
Make sure you post roll so we can hold you accountable. Didn't see you on today's roll call. If you're nic free, celebrate with the rest of us.

First off, I'm glad you're still quit, and yes i doubted. I wouldn't of doubted if you wouldn't have disappeared for almost 2 days.
This is why the site works brother. If you don't post roll your not making a promise to yourself, me and the world your not going to use for today. We hold each other accountable. Glad to be quit with you.

WHEW! that is great to hear Todd!!!!!! you had some of us worried. We are in your corner, bro. You just need to make time everyday to put your name on the roll call in November, which is your promise to us (and yourself) that you will not use nicotine that whole day. You can seriously do it in about 30 seconds, and it will save your life someday.
Quitting with you today Todd!

Fixed it for you, bud. no biggie, most everyone f's it up at first.
Here's one link on how to do it.
index.php?showtopic=50 (http://forum.killthecan.org/index.php?showtopic=50)
Hopefully this helps too:
1-click on "QUOTE" on the top post that includes the most recent Role Call
2-when new window opens up, scroll down to second text box, there will be a jumbled mess of text in there, right click then hit select all
3-either hit Ctrl+X or right click the "cut" command
4-then move up to upper text box (was empty earlier) and hit Ctrl+V or right click "paste".
5-got to the bottom of Quitetrs list and add your name and day count
6-hit "add Reply"
7-a new window will open, then hit "First" in the listing of pages (upper left of Posts), this will take you back to the most recent post, check to see if you bumped someone, if not move along
8-if you did bump add that person by editing your post
Once you do it once you will get easier, after a week you will be a Forum Post Pro!

Hang in there todd, it gets better. Soon you'll be back to normal. Just sucks for a little while but the reward is worth it.

Todd - looks like you missed roll today. you still quit? why did you miss roll?
The most important part of the KTC program is posting roll everyday, which is your promise to your group and everyone here that you will not use nicotine that day. If you wanna be quit you gotta take the shiit seriously bro.

Sorry guys, missed roll yesterday. I had a cousin call and he kept me up on the phone most of the night plus I wasn't home most of the day yesterday. But on the good side no nic, no dip since 8-17-13.

Glad to hear you're still quit, Todd. I can't stress enough how important it is to post roll every morning. Have you read this section of your November thread yet?:

Roll call is the most important thing you will do here. That one simple act will be what makes this quit different than any other attempt. Roll call, quite simply, is a promise to your brothers that you will be Nicotine Free for that day.
We require a simple one day at a time philosophy. Make roll call, concentrate on today and today only. We will work through the troubles of today with you. We will worry about tomorrow when it gets here.
Roll call will build accountability with your brothers. You know that the man next to you in line is going through or has dealt with the exact same things you are. Lean on the knowledge of those who have walked that road. Develop relationships with them and especially the guys in your home group. These people will save your life if you let them.
If you follow this simple advice you'll be amazed. You have lied to, cheated on, and stole time from every single person you hold dear. You take roll call seriously, and you will find that total strangers will give your quit more accountability than any real person in your world.
If you want to quit, deep down, really want to quit roll call is the cornerstone you will build your quit house on. Be loyal to yourself, your group, and ultimately to [KTC] as a whole and you shall have the freedom you desire. Guaranteed.

Uh... hey Todd, you still around?? If you're gonna do the program then DO THE PROGRAM man. It can't work if you dont give it a chance. POST ROLL.
Hope you're still quit. Haven't heard/seen you at all this week.
