Title: This sucks, but I am here
Post by: Monkey Wrench on January 28, 2010, 01:19:00 PM
Hey all, though I would drop in for a quick intro. I have used nicotene since I was 16, often going back and forth between snuff and cigs. By the time I turned 30, I was up to about a can and a half of Grizzly a day. Then I had a bad heart condition pop up (atrial fibrillation, while holding my 6 month old daughter), so needless to say, after the surgery, it scared me straight. Unforturnately, after about 3 years, I caved one night while road-tripping at 1:00am. I still specifically remember going into the gas station, and weighing a pouch of Redman to bag of seeds. For some stupid f'n reason, you probably know what I chose. My plan was to use the Redman to get through the night, then throw it away in the morning. Well, I got home, and instead of throwing it away, I put on my toolbox. It started out that I would have a chew on Friday nights, while working out in the garage, and that lasted for about a month and actually it was nice. I kind of felt normal being able to have the dip, but not freak out the next day. Then I "would have a really bad day at work", and all that stupid crap you tell yourself, and it slowly started to build back up. So within the last year, I have gotten myself fully hooked on this stupid shit once again. A pouch every other day or so. the Redman is probably better than the grizzly was, but judging by how bad I'm jones'n for a dip, I'm just as addicted as I ever was.

Fuck. Day 2. I had this stupid shit licked for three f'n years of my life, and here I am all over again.

I will never put this shit in my mouth again, I now realize that much like an alcohol addict, I am a nic addict. And I always will be...always. 30 years from now, when I haven't had a dip for that freaking long, I will still be a nic addict. Fuck.

Today is hard, but I know Saturday is really really going to suck. On all the sissy attempts that I'd try to quit "the first time", I would do OK during the week, then turn into a puss on Saturday. Sorry for rambling, I'm just pissed off and really jones'n for a dip. But I guess, as I have learned here...TODAY I will have no nicotene.

Getting free from that crap and starting over again sucks!!! I have done the same thing in the past. The accountability of this site is what has made this quit stick for me this time for 513 days!!! You can DO this one day at a time!!! Welcome to the SUCK!!!

Welcome Monkey. I love to tell you you're different from me but I can't. Fact is, you're exactly like 99% of us out here. The quitting, the "just one's", the wife bitching, the cancer scare, the shit smelling fingers, the ninja dipping, the lying...Oh, the fucking lying! We get it brother and we can help. Yeah, day 2 sucks horse shit but you're in for a wilder ride this weekend. Since you know weekends are especially hard to stay quit, you need to stick close to this site to chat, bitch, vent and rage at the Nic bitch. Hell, even bitch at us. We can take it and honestly, some of us need to hear it to remind us of what we went through. Stay as active as you can and stay strong.
You deserve this.

You can do it!!! I am on day 49, and as I sit here once again eating chex mix (really good, nice cruch) and piling on the calories, sometimes I ponder why I quit, and then I think, oh ya, the cancer scare, the embarrassment, the money, and then I am glad I am quit and keep eating. :)

Hang in there, like they say, it never goes away, but does get easier.

Where can I buy the fake stuff? I tried all the gas stations, walmart, etc. I'm trying to locate it before the weekend. No, I will not cave regardless, but it may help me keep from being a total asshole to my kids and wife.

Thanks!

check out tobacco stores as well. Some of them carry it! Just don't be tempted to buy the real thing though!!! This website has links for Hooch, another decent fake dip under smokeless alternatives along with a $5.00 off coupon. It is under Your Quit on the welocme page.

Monkey Wrench,
Walmart carries Smokey Mountain Herbal Snuff in two flavors. Many Rite Aids carry Bacc-Off. Mint Snuff is often available at your local Health Food Store. If you get real desparate...buy some green tea bags.

Ironically, the only place I can find it is in the smoke shops.... cocksuckers place it right next to the poisonous crap. ;)

It does help with the cravings though.

Hang in there Monkey. It gets better... I can almost function normally again. 14 days.

Thanks for the tips guys, I ordered some Hooch online, hopefully it will get here soon. I've also located a toboacco shop that sells one of the brands. It was getting really frustrating going to all these stores with the hopes of getting some kinda releif, and to keep finding nothing sucked.

Regardless, I ain't caving either way, and I know I don't NEED the other stuff to be able to quit. But...the weekends coming. I'm probably going to have to find something, or hide from the kids so I'm not jerk-dad. We also have baseball on Sunday, which I coach...eeek. The kids will be like "where's the Redman, coach? And why do we have to run so many laps? " LOL

the wal-mart by me stopped carrying it. Nor do the 7-11's which they list both on their site as "National Accounts".

Just be careful with the fake stuff. Lot of guys swear by it, but I know in my previous quits, I hated it so much it always lead me back to the real stuff.

It's funny when I read that first post, knowing that I was going through a craving while typing it. Apparently, a nic-fit gives me quite the potty mouth. Not my usual style...sorry folks. I'm better right now. Although, I have broken a computer mouse already during a fit. Our computer guy is an ex-smoker so he knows what I'm going through, and he just walked over and brought me a new mouse. He didn't say anything...too funny.

Hey dude,
I treid hooch, smokey mtn, bac-off, and a few others. The best I found was http://www.kikit.net/home.asp (http://www.kikit.net/home.asp) if you are a cope user. It feels and packs like cope and has a little burn to the lip.

Screw the fake stuff. Here's where it's at:

Go to your local Asian grocer. Buy some dehydrated seaweed.

Steam the dehydrated seaweed over a mixture of water and balsamic vinegar for 5 minutes.

Lay the now supple seaweed flat. Fill with a pinch of sea salt, a dash of cayanne pepper, shredded jerky, and touch of maple syrup or molasses.

Wrap into a ball and insert in cheek.

Delightful.

I went with the Bacc-Off at first. Found it at the same tobacco store I used to buy my snuff. It helped. Why did it help? Because that shit was so nasty and tore my lip up so bad that I never, ever wanted Bacc-Off, Smokey Mountain and any brand of snuff/smokeless tobacco in my mouth again. That stuff was God awful. I've found the best thing is Life Savers (wintergreen are pretty good), the soft peppermint sticks or gum works best. I put down a snuff habit to pick up a chewing gum habit. But at least I won't have to worry about the surgeon having to reconstruct me a new bottom job because I refused to give up evil in a nice little round tin with a metal lid.

I've built more stuff in my garage in the last 3 or 4 years that most guys do in a whole lifetime. A few cars (frame up, custom body and steel fab), authentic native american longbows, working on a boat with the kids now, etc. etc. My garage is a big part of my personality.

And now...the kids are gone to a b-day party at chuck-e-cheese, prime time to head to the garage and start building. Get a little bit of the boat laid out before they get home, so I can have the "prime stuff" ready for them to dive right into.

But I ain't going.

Fuck you nic bitch. I can hear you walking around out there, and I'm not opening the door.

Brad, day 3.

Solid, Brad. Very solid. That is the way to keep your quit secure. Without any hesitation, I will tell you that before you know it, you will be in your garage, dip free, enjoying yourself. Give it time.

Knowing that going out there on day three could put you in a bad position just shows your resolve to kill the bitch permanently. Way to stay strong and stay quit.

Agree 100%!!! Do what you gotta do to make it through each day. If that means avoiding the poker game, your best friend who chews, your favorite hobby, etc.....DOES NOT MATTER. You are reclaiming your life here. Eventually those triggers will get much easier to deal with, guaranteed.

Amen...It won't always be this way Monkey Wrench. After your first experience doing those favorite things without nicotine, you start breaking the chain and your mind makes new connections. Its hard in the early days when all of your memories and activities include tobacco. Give yourself opportunities to make these new connections in a safe environment. Maybe go out into the garage when the family comes back with a piece of gum in your mouth, etc. You can do it man! It just takes practice!

Hang tough buddy. I too enjoy the shop I do woodworking and restore old tractors. It was a couple weeks before I could work out there comfortably. Go out there prove that you can enter the shop without dip stay as long as you can. You may only be there for a couple minutes but you proved that you could be there without dip. Go back the next day because you already proved you could be there with no dip. Stay longer the next thing you are back in the saddle again.
Good luck on your boat sounds like a great project post some pictures when you get it done.

Brilliant. A lot of wisdom in that line. Cranky, I am always looking to the vets for insight and motivation who knew it would come from a guy with less than a week of quit. If you don't mind, I stoled this line for my signature. If you do, let me know and it is gone.

Your more than welcome to it. For some reason, when I start craving in the evenings, I post something like that and it helps me get through it.

However, on a good note, the cravings weren't bad at all so far today, not sure what happened. Hoping to repeat!

Monkey Man...You definitely have the right perspective and attitude. Awesome. Keep that perspective and attitude up front every day. Own this quit every day.

If you don't, you will fail. Guaranteed.

And no one wants that. Yourself, first and foremost.

Sidebar: Ask yourself what fucking business the nic bitch has out in your garage. That cunt who will only lure, poison and kill you. Your garage is a good place, and nicotine is a bad thing. Don't let it make your good place filthy.

1. Hook up the airhose to the compressor.
2. Open the garage door.
3. Blow that bitch down the driveway.

Thats your garage, not hers. She has no place there anymore!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Had some decent success out there last night. Made a few pieces for our new suitcase boat. The Hooch, sunflower seeds, and coffee helped out. It's funny though, after 12 days, the cravings are less often, but are certainly stronger now. Like they all pile on together. I'm also giving myself one more week of Hooch and then I'm going to leave it behind as well. It does feel good to be out there making stuff again!!!

Congrats on getting over the hump on this one Brad. Some of the biggest struggles in my Quit come screaming in when I am doing something that used to entail the use of Skoal. I thought I might have to forget the entire hunting season for fear of not being able to sit in a treestand without a chew in my mouth....I survived. You will keep being challenged as you move through your Quit but I promise you it will get better.

Keep up the good work......and good luck with that boat.

MW: Don't be in such a hurry to curb the fake dip. It never hurt anybody. Without any conscious effort, you'll get tired of it one day and just stop using it. I promise.

Till then, just look at it as an (un)guilty pleasure to take the place of that other stuff that was slowly killing you.

Totally agree with Theo here... I chewed about a can/day of the fake stuff for a good 200 days or so. Then one day I just didn't need it anymore. If it helps USE IT.

Alright, never it let it be said I didn't take good advice. Just ordered a 6 pack o' hooch. Since the company is local, it should be here tomorrow.
