Title: HELLO EVERYONE!
Post by: ShaunL19 on April 20, 2013, 06:24:00 PM
Hello everybody, my name is Shaun. I started chewing when i got into A-School after Navy bootcamp. I remember my roomate was a fleet returnee and he had broken a can of cope in his picket and came in the door and said "Booter, we need to finish this can, itll go bad." All hammered hahaha . I knew it was bad, I wasn't dumb but I tried it...so i guess i was dumb hahaha. I felt like I was drunk, which was nice, cuz I couldnt drink and I loved boozin. From then on I was hooked. Kodiak Ice....then Grizzly Wintergreen, Then Cope Wintergreen...those were the big ones. I was 19 and now im 25...so 6 years..in those 6 years i probably tried 17 times to quit...longest was 30 days.
Im originially from Massachusetts but my wife and I moved to Wisconsin about 8 months ago. Tragedy struck when my best friend from the military passed away unexpectedly. He was my brother. I had always made a promise to him if anything happened i would look after his family. He was 32. Joshua Peter Probst. He left behind a wife and three beautiful children which I love to death. Before I came out here, I kind of accepted failing at quitting. Then I saw his 6 month old boy (who is now about a year and a half). He looks up to me, and he sees me all the time. i NEED to stop for those kids. I want to be a good role model. Noone can fill Joshs shoes, I can only hope to stand next to him. But enough was enough, and I am done. I am on DAY 8!!!!! and i am never going back. But i need you guys. Im so excited to be a part of this site now. I just need some guidance and instruction on how to do all this good stuff hahaha. Thank you for your time!

Shaun you might have others that give you inspiration to quit but you can't quit for them the only person you can quit for is you. For 4 decades I tried to quit for my wife, daughter, parents but never really for me until I found this website in a final and last ditch effort to escape my captivity. My story is similar to hundreds of others. I always I thought my addiction was unique but lurking around here I found I was far from alone. My quit group and others have become new friends and are responsible for holding me accountable. If you drink deep of the quit koolaid served up here you will succeed. If you post roll occasionally and wait to make contacts till your hurting you will cave. That's not a prediction it is a promise. I'll be watching to see what your decision is. Pm me if you need anything. 'Popcorn'

Shaun,

Time to be selfish. What WT says is right on. Your selfishness (in this case) will be the best thing for those you love. Time to be selfish. Time to take back a huge part of your time and life, take it back so that YOU decide when to get dressed and go to the c-store. So that YOU decide when to take a shit. So that YOU decide whether or not to go to the recital. Etc etc....

Quit TODAY. Tomorrow is bullshit, and you and I both know "tomorrow" has been a BS promise many times in the past. Flush that stuff down the toilet. literally. Now.

And now for some canned, but important, advice.....

Welcome on the greatest decision ever, quitting. You got some great advice. Man up and take it all in.

This site has both changed and saved my life, and itÂ’s really quite simple:

Post Roll: Why (http://forum.killthecan.org/index.php?showtopic=120)? How (http://forum.killthecan.org/index.php?showtopic=50)?
Every day you log into your “Group”, a bunch of guys all quitting together and going through the same suck, fog, cravings, etc. You “Post Roll”; add your name and the number of days quit that you are. This is your promise, a pledge to your quit brothers and sisters, to yourself, and to everyone else here on KTC to not use nicotine in any way, shape, or form, for the next 24 hours. Keep your promise. A man is nothing if his word is no good.

Get Involved:
Read: Introductions (http://forum.killthecan.org/index.php?showforum=25) and HOF Speeches (http://forum.killthecan.org/index.php?showtopic=90). Read the banter in other groups. Read the non-dip discussions in the Wilcard (http://forum.killthecan.org/index.php?showforum=11) section when you want to get away from thoughts of dip. By doing this you will realize that you are not alone in the feeling you are having. You will gain strength though others. And, you will get to know these people on a personal level, which adds accountability.

Send out a few PMs:
Send out a PM to someone in your group, or to someone that posted something that you related to. Offer your phone number. I bet you will get a phone number in return. Store those numbers in your phone and USE THEM in a moment of weakness. Sending a text out has prevented me from caving more than a few times. Sometimes I didnÂ’t even need a response, just taking a few seconds to text was all it took to get me thinking straight again. Often I'd text something like "this blows." I'd often get in response "you gave your word. Suck it up bitch."
Every tool you need to QUIT and remain QUIT is here, for free, but you have to want it. No one can quit for you, but we can offer support whenever you need it.

Shaun, zam covered everything. Join ktc,, you won't be sorry. You said it yourself,, you have tried to quit before and failed. 1000's have quit using ktc,, Its proven. Make your quit a priority. Make it the most important thing in your life and everyone in your life will think you for it later.

You are in the JULY '13 Quit group. July is the month you will have your 100th nic-free day. See my earlier post for instructions on how to post. Go to the TEST THREAD (http://forum.killthecan.org/index.php?showtopic=345) if you feel you want to figure out more quickly how to post. But the idea is to post NOW, so nicotine is off the table for today. If your word means jack, posting roll will make it simply not possible to dip today. That takes a lot of pressure off. You will be held accountable for that promise. Post that promise now though, if its messed up, someone will fix it.

PS - none us us came here because we liked forums, group hugs, pats on the ass, or group chat. Personally, I'm not the right generation for that tech stuff to be second nature. We came to quit. You have a total of TWO posts. Until I see that you have 3 posts, one being actually in the quit group, you have not "tried" hard enough. You can do this. Do not try to quit....QUIT. Do not try to post.....POST.

Congrats Shaun!!! 9 Days is huge...but it is just the start of your new badass nic-free life. My family (and some little guy who lost his father when the Towers came down) were my inspiration. But I knew Nic was dangerous when I started dipping. I knew I had to quit the whole 20+ years I used Nicotine. I quit for me...to make me a me. It is just convenient that those who I love the most will also benefit the most from me finally deciding to make a good choice.

I'm still an addict. But I'm a nic-free addict who isn't full of shit...well, a lot less full of shit...than I used to be.

Sorry to hear about your buddy. Thanks for your service and and congrats on making a great choice, brother.

Shaun, I was all on-board with you until I saw this quote in your last statement. Using the word "yet" means that you are still keeping your foot in the Exit door so you have a reason to leave. Sounds like you mean it but we have all heard the "addict lingo" before. Think about the reasons for your quit and honor your word every day!

Click right here (http://forum.killthecan.org/index.php?showtopic=8025) to go to your quit group.

Then post per the instructions found here. (http://forum.killthecan.org/index.php?showtopic=50) Bookmark/shortcut that.

It all gets easier, I promise. Takes 30 seconds or so once you get the hang of it.

Damn honorable thing you're doing with those kids. Stay the course here. Be quit for you and for them.

Reach out if you need anything.

You, my friend, get it. Congratulations.

When I first told my wife about this place, she laughed. Then she realized I was serious, and she thought I was nuts. She eventually became my strongest supporter and a SERIOUS KTC cheerleader. I mean, she digs this place. Mainly because it has kept me quit. She has became friends with a couple of the female quitters here, and some of the other spouses. It's quite the network. She's pretty good at monitoring quietly and then surprising me with a gift or something special when I hit a milestone. She will drop everything for me to meet up or help out a quitter. I tell her it's something to do with the site, and there are no questions asked.

Eat all you want. You can worry about that later in your quit. I almost turned pudgy for a while, and that ain't like me. Note: firefighter picture at the top of the page is me. Not pudgy at all now.
