Title: Haven't chewed in 17 days
Post by: Irishbulldog on April 13, 2009, 11:13:00 AM
I just joined up today. I havent chewed in about 17 days. I am 24 and I have been chewing since I was 16. I just decided to quit out of the blue. I am going to the dentist tomorrow so I am a little nervous about that. So far all I have been doing is chewing lots of gum and seeds. Anyone have any other tips? I was thinking of getting some of "fake" chew, but I just don't really think that would help. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks

Welcome Bulldog, one piece of advice that I have from my own personal experience: Don't let a good report from you dentist tomorrow let you fall under the false impression that you can SAFELY keep dipping. Take the good news and use it to stay quit. Good luck man, you came to the right place.

These are some questions that I had to wrestle with when I first decided to call it quits.

- What are the advantages of quitting nicotine?

- What are the disadvantages of quitting nicotine?

- What are the advantages of continuing chewing?

- What are the disadvantages of continuing chewing?

If you look at your responses, there should be a very clear pattern developing. Nicotine has no long term benefits. It's all about satisfying a craving in the moment. We take a very strong "one day at a time" mentality here. You don't have to worry about quitting for the rest of your life. You only have to worry about quitting for today. Turn that 17 into an 18. The pain and stress of quitting is only temporary. If you can make it through your next crave, you have won a small battle. Again, don't worry about quitting forever. Worry about making it through the day.

As bhfive suggested, posting roll with July is the most helpful thing you can do to help you stay quit for today. It sounded a little silly to me at first, but those guys will be your life line down the road. Everyone has a similar story. If they can do it, so can you - and vice versa. Accountability is key.

Congrats on your decision to quit for today!

Welcome IrishBulldog - nice avatar
Smokey gave you some great advice. Posting roll everyday helps me tremendously. If possible make it the first thing you do everyday. Start off the day making a commitment to everyone here that you will not use nicotine for the day. If you can't access the website get someone's phone number, call or text, have them post roll for you. Whenever you're faced with a strong cave, come here and start reading. Read Cancer and quitter stories, Hall of Fame speeches, everything possible. Posting roll everyday will give you a sense of pride in your quit, not only for yourself but for your fellow future HOF class.
