Believe it or not, but I have the worst excuse for being a recent X-dipper...I treat cancer with radiation...yup...I've treated more head and neck cancers than I care to acknowledge, and I would dip right after seeing my patients. Can you believe that? And get this, my area of subspecialization is head and neck cancers...I think I specialized in it because I kind of sympathized with the people who get these cancers.
I got into dipping when I was in high school...used it to make weight on the wrestling team...at any rate, I just never gave it up all these years. I kind of was B.S.'ing myself into thinking that I could examine myself frequently and can pick up anything premalignant...but that is truly BS.
At any rate, if anyone wants motivation to quit, I can give you in exhaustive detail what radiation treatments to the head and neck region are like for cancer. It's the most miserable thing.

Lottery you're not alone, I'm a Hospice social worker and have literally seen hundreds of patients die from cancer. Sometimes nasty, exorcistlike deaths. You'd think it would sink in but I think it goes to show how controlling nicotine is. Good work on your quit. You're going to see life much differently in the next few days, weeks... Take time to reflect each day and celebrate how wonderful life is when you're free of that horrible drug.

Yea... I am sure you've seen your share of head and neck cancer patients pass away in hospice...pretty miserable death, actually...they breath out of a stoma coming out of their neck, they drool because the cancer has cut off their passage for swallowing, they permanently are sticking out their tongue cause it is filled with cancer...got to write stuff down cause they don't have vocal cords...real nasty stuff.

glad your here lottery...stay quit brother. :D

Lottery I definately know what you mean. I was at one time a scrub tech at Barnes and Jewish Hospital in St. Louis. Guess what I was doing there?
I worked in the ENT Operating Room assisting in the surgeries to remove those cancers. The one like ODT had done, did a bunch of those procedures. Big incision side of face and neck, remove tongue, larynx, lymph nodes, jaw, teeth, yup all gone, big hole in the throat so they could breath, having food pumped into their stomachs by a tube, because you can't eat or chew by mouth. Forgot to mention the skin grafts and the flaps of tissue from your forearm or calf so they can close the hole in your face.
I would leave the hospital get in the car and throw a fatty in. Not once did I ever think that I would be one of those people. Shit, they were scumbags, alcoholics, homeless. I never told myself they chewed tobacco.
I have worked with a few Dr's who dip, chew, or smoke tobacco. After all they are human too.
Welcome to the site.

You made the right decision. It takes what it takes, so put the past behind you and start posting roll in the September group brother. Roll call is the foundation of the site and was the number one key that enabled me to quit.

You want some pictures...alrighty...obviously I can't post some of my patients, but I will post some links. The head and neck is a big area...so, hopefully I can find pictures of each anatomic area that will give this tumor due justice.
Oral Tongue...here's a big fatty!

Oropharynx (these can get big before they are identified) http://www.diagnosticpathology.org/cont ... /figure/F1 (http://www.diagnosticpathology.org/content/1/1/22/figure/F1)
Floor of mouth tumors and gum tumors (these are a pain to deal with because it is too hard to radiate them...so you have to, often times, cut off a piece of someone's jaw)

Let me know if want to see more...these really don't do it justice. I'll see if I can find one that does.

welcome Lottery. addiction is why were are all here. we are all addicts. do not dwell on the fact that you were lying to yourself that you were outsmarting all the harmful ingredients of a dip. lying is what addicts do. the time is to focus on the present, not 10 years from now. this is a big step and just take it a day at a time. nicotine can have a hard grip and will put up a fight to keep you. just keep coming here and make the pledge to have this day be nicotine free.

Lottery,
Welcome aboard. I'm glad you decided to quit and found us here at KTC. Whatever it is that finally pushes people to the decision to quit is different for all of us. For me, seeing pictures of cancer like the ones you posted make my stomach sink. Fear can be a very motivating factor. Stay quit and share with others here what can happen if they don't.
