Title: Deciding I Have To Quit
Post by: Gus Dale on November 28, 2007, 04:24:00 AM
i'm 42 and i've tried quitting for years. i stop for a few days, sometimes for a week, but always start again. the last six months, i've practically doubled the amount i use per week.

i would really appreciate any advice or suggestions from others who were such heavy users as i am now. tonight, i promised my wife that this time i am going to stop no matter how crummy the next few days, weeks, months, whatever are going to be.

i'm so happy i found this site.

thanks

Gus

You have made a great decision to quit and promising your wife that you would quit is a good decision as well. You HAVE to promise yourself that you will see this through. Your quit group is March 2008 and you have already made contact. You will find people in the same position as yourself in the March group. Post roll call and tell your story. Read what others have endured before you. Welcome!

welcome gus -- get ready for the ride of your life (and for you life)

mahum has already got you started but i'll give you a small piece of advice as well -- don't worry about forever (it's too big). take it day by day. we'll deal with tomorrow when we get there. that's the beauty of a DAILY roll call - break this quitting thing into manageable pieces.

welcome!

i promised my wife
This has to be about you man. Nice you wanna do something nice for her but this has to be about you and you only. Doing it for someone else will not work. Use her for inspiration but in the end do it for YOU!

Gus - just be true to yourself, admit your addicted just like the rest of us. No shame in that, nic slays many. And take the war in small battles. One day at a time or even by the hour. It can be tough but not impossible. Reach out for support here. Everyone's gone through, going through what you are doing. The cravings will pass, drink lots of water, rub your ears, whatever you need to do to stay away from the dirt. Coming here is a great decision and this place and people will help.

Gus - most of us in here had quit a few times before it finally sticking. And the process never really ends. WD and others are right - this has to be for you. If you don't really want to quit (and don't bullshit yourself, your wife, or those of us on this site) or have doubts you have the balls to stick it out read the Jenny Kerns letter. That might give you a shove.

Other than that - welcome and this site will remind you that others have gone through whatever you will go through.
