Hello all,
I am 24 years old and I have been using tobacco for about 5 years. Switched strictly to chewing tobacco (Grizzly) about 3 years ago. I am very active and physically fit, but my one vice is chewing tobacco. Recently (within the last month), I have been experiencing extreme chest pains. Needless to say this encouraged me to finally look in the mirror and admit to myself that I am really addicted. It hasn't been easy, and with a young family the repercussions for my actions/choices are starting to become real.
I have looked into several alternatives to chewing, and I am looking for more experienced "quitters" to advise:
1. Cold turkey (no smokey mountain, gum, seeds, lozenges, etc.)
2. Nicotine lozenges
3. Smokey Mountain
4. Gum, seeds, etc (any non-nicotine or Smokey mountain like product)
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I have half a can left of Grizzly, and I am thinking that it is time I call it quits.

You're in the right place. You're going to get some great feedback here. All I will add is when you are struggling (and you will), chat is a great distraction. The link is on the upper right and says "Live Chat". It's a great way to get to know people and strengthen your quit.
Also, awesome decision! One of the most liberating things you can do is flush that half can. I was a smoker and I submerged my last half pack in water and let it disintegrate. Incredibly empowering to not smoke every last one!

Advice? Flush it and Post Roll Call....immediately before that addict mind of yours kicks in and steers you away from the place.
Go Cold Turkey sugar....get it over with. Anything less is prolonging the inevitable.

My God man dump that shit...fake dip might work for you and you can use that while on this site but you can't use the nic gum or anything like that...one day at a time...post roll every day, for the first 3-5 days you are going to suck and you need to quit one hour at a time...maybe even a half hour at a time...now tell us a bit about yourself...married? what was your brand of poison? how often did you use the poison?

Go cold turkey. Period. End of discussion. Trust me, its gonna suck. Bad. But that's part of it. Remember, no one forced you to take that first dip and no one made you keep putting it in your mouth.
Learn this site and how things are done around here. But throw that crap away now. All of it.....

Keep your promise. A man is nothing if his word is no good.
Get Involved:

Send out a PM to someone in your group, or to someone that posted something that you related to. Offer your phone number. I bet you will get a phone number in return. Store those numbers in your phone and USE THEM in a moment of weakness. Sending a text out has prevented me from caving more than a few times. Sometimes I didn’t even need a response, just taking a few seconds to text was all it took to get me thinking straight again. Other times the response I got was, “you do NOT have permission to cave”, which I took to heart.
Every tool you need to QUIT and remain QUIT is here, for free, but you have to want it. No one can quit for you, but we can offer support whenever you need it.

Anything that does not contain nicotine is fine. Seeds, gum, smokey mountain. We don't advocate nicotine replacement programs such as the patch or the gum. I say dump out the rest of your can and post roll in Septembers quit group. Promise everyone in there that you will not use nicotine the rest of the day. Rinse and repeat the next day. There are a lot of resources on this site, and I recommend you read as much as you can on here the first few days.
I'm also 24, I dipped skoal and Cope about a half can a day for 5 years. The first few days are going to suck, but it's remembering those first few days that strengthens your quit. I would not be this far in my quit without this site and all of these other bad ass quitters.

hmmmm.. lemme see....what is it you are addicted to again? lozenges? nope. Mint leaves with sugar? nope. Juicy Fruits? nope. Salt? Sugar? maybe, but that's a different subject all together. So the way I look at it, your options really go like this:
1) Cold turkey (no nicotine and you have a big ego)
2) continue feeding your nicotine addiction and pretend you accomplished something other than boost profits at GlaxoSmithKline and JohnsonJohnson.
3) Cold turkey + mint and sugar
4) Cold turkey + candy and/or salt
or maybe 5) cold turkey and whatever the hell it takes to stay nic free
I'd pick one of the "cold turkey" options.
Decide you've had enough. Decide that it's F'in OVER. Then head to the WELCOME CENTER and start reading.

Thanks for the many replies. It is much appreciated, and I am encouraged by the amount of support on this forum. I took your guy's advice and flushed the rest of my chew at lunch today. It was liberating, but like you all have hinted at I know that I am now facing an uphill battle.
A little background on myself:
I recently got married (August '12). I graduated from a good university with a degree in Computer Science last May, and bought a home in Colorado.
My brand of poison at first was Copenhagen long cut, but I switched to Grizzly Wintergreen. I usually go through 3-4 cans a week.

Ain't no uphill battle.
You got 3-7 days of physical pain while the drug laves your system. It's called withdrawal. Once you're clear, you begin healing. You've messed your body up pretty good recently and it doesn't heal overnight.
In fact, your brain is going to tell you that you need nicotine to move forward in your life. That's not true. That's the parasite begging its host to not get rid of it. It's its safety measure.
You keep walking forward in this quit and nothing is uphill.
You can do it.
Now go post roll stud.

I posted roll today giving my word to not use NIC today. Tomorrow I plan on doing the same and adding one more +1 to my quit. You will be a user for one more day I assume.
