Ten minutes ago, I flushed my last half can of Kodiak down the toilet. I woke up this morning thinking, "yikes, I only have 1/2 a can of dip left!" My next thought was, "perhaps this is the time to finally give it up". I've been wanting to quit for years, but just never could pull the trigger to do it. It's been 21 years since I started at age 16 - almost to the day. That's fucking long enough.
I did have that first dip when I woke up today. I then hopped on the web, Googled "how to quit smokeless tobacco", and have been reading ever since. While I read over those few hours, I did have two more chews. Then, as I got more in to this site, I finally just decided to go dump the toxic waste in a can that was sitting next to me down the toilet and call it quits for good. None of this waiting until tomorrow shit.
I'm going to go post in roll now and officially get this started.
Happy to have found this site!

Absolutely awesome! You can do this. Keep reading and stay real close to this site. Read everything and meet some folks. Post your promise every day in your group. Get numbers so you can text or call somebody when you hit rough spots. Glad to have you here with us.

Morning quitter. Glad to have you here. Welcome to one of the hardest things that you will do in your life. While there are going to be days you feel like shit or feel great, it will be one of the most rewarding things you will ever do.
The light at the end of the tunnel may not burn brightly right now, but it's there. Just gotta wade through a bunch of muck.

Whats up N/A!
I had the almost the same revelation yesterday at work and flushed my cans. Get your ass on that January Roll and lets do this shit together!

Thanks guys. So far, although only 4.5 hours, it hasn't been too bad. I'm just trying to keep myself busy. However, I did chow down 1/2 bag of butterscotch chips and have been chewing on Altoids non-stop. My wife will be home soon with some gum and other stuff to keep me distracted. I think when I wake up (if I can sleep) tomorrow morning will be the worst. For so, so long, the first thing I did after waking up was to throw a dip in. Going to be changing that routine from now on!
thanks again.

The strangest part for me was every 10 minutes reaching in my pocket searching for that can. It was never there but it was just surprising how often my brain told me it needed its fix.
As mentioned that first three days sucks. You can do it, we all did. It gets a lot better quickly.

21 year habit for me at well - until found this website and now finishing off my 78th day. Take it from me, it can be done and it isn't even as bad as you think in your current situation. Get beyond the physical issues in the first week or so and then beyond that it is truly mental. Bottom line, just don't do it again. It really IS that simple. To do this, (1) post roll as soon as you wake up in the morning, (2) KEEP YOUR WORD throughout the day, and (3) repeat the next day. I did that for the 78th time this morning but there are folks on this website who have literally been doing that for YEARS. The undeniable fact is that it WORKS!
Welcome and congrats on making a life changing decision.

Thanks guys. Day three has begun. Not doing too bad, I guess, but do keep having those moments where I'm reaching for my can. I didn't realize just how automatic that had become. Sit down at desk - throw chew in. Hop in car - throw chew in. Take shower - throw chew in. Hell, do most anything - throw chew in. Really, though, I'm handling things better than I thought I would. Lots of seeds, sugar-free candy and gum, and keeping myself busy.
One of these days, I'll post up my story. Maybe it will help others. I've gone through some shit the last few years, and I think it's given me a different perspective on quitting tobacco.
One day at a time for a tobacco free life. God, the inside of my mouth already feels so much better! Positive benefit number one! Yeah, so I still want to tear the head of any bird that chirps outside my window, but that's just my newly nic-free body adjusting to things B)

Deadication - how you hanging in there?
As for the phone number - Just dial 00 for the ++. I think that's how it works from the States!

Ah, gotcha.
I'm doing great. I hear you on the seeds n candy I carry that shit around like a GOOD habit. I emptied a can of Jerky Chew and filled it with BBQ seeds last night as a joke but I'll probably continue to do it since it was oddly satisfying.
See you on the roll call brother!

Today was the first morning in I don't know how many years where I woke up and the first thought running through my head WASN'T "where's my can". It actually took about 10 minutes before that evil temptress bitch of a bear even came in to my head. Fuck you, bear bitch. Die die die die die!
I wish I still lived in Alaska just so I could take my .44 short barrel out and blow the shit out of a few Kodiak signs I have. People in Germany might frown on the fact that I'm discharging a high-powered rifle in my front yard, however.
Deadication - liking the tin filled with seeds! I'm staying away from all the fake chews for now. Filled with seeds, though..... :) I'm finding keeping busy and always having something at hand to toss in my mouth is working best! Thing is, I don't really like candy and seeds get old quick for me. But, I'm noticing I'm not needing them as often now! Things are going pretty well in most regards. Still, there are a few times a day where I'd throw someone off a bridge for a chew, but those anti-social feelings are fairly uncommon at least!

N/A,
I stayed away from the fake, seeds and candy.
Early on in my quit, I went to the grocery store and bought some coffee straws--the real thin straws that you use to stir your coffee. Then I would cut them in half and put them in my pocket. Whenever I felt like I need to put something in my mouth, I popped one in and chewed on it like a toothpick. It worked for me.
Keep going! One Day at aa time
Pm me if you need anything!

Good job staying the course - keep posting that roll. You'll blink and have weeks behind you. Shout if you need anything.

Thanks, all. Things are gong pretty good now. I did go pick up a prescription for Bupropion (Wellbutrin) the other day and it seems to be working pretty good. I'm not so edgy and agitated. Overworked and stressed, yes, but not feeling all jumpy like I'm missing something and can't find it. If anyone is having any problems with anxiety, etc. while quitting, it may be worth looking in to. It's a short-term 'script, but is a nice crutch when you're not using any nic replacement products or the fake chew stuff.
I won't be able to post roll tomorrow (Sat) or Sunday. The wife, dog, and I will be camping on the Czech/Poland border this weekend and I will be absolutely nowhere near a WiFi connection - nor a store that sells Kodiak or any other dip. You just don't see that shit here in Europe. Snuff and cigarettes, yes, but not dip. Should be a great weekend for some travel photography though!
What I'm finding is that an active mind and body keeps the real bad cravings away. Stay busy and you likely won't think nearly as much about what it is you've given up.
Have a great, nicotine-free weekend all!

Its nice to see the teamwork, but you cannot pre-post roll call. Roll call is a daily promise to not use nicotine/tobaccoo.
Will you have a telephone. Not sure how much long distance cost, but it might be worth a couple bucks to call or text your promise to a quit brother, especially this early on in your quit.

Thanks for the offer Deadication! I was able to post roll before I leave (which is in a few minutes..) I'll just have to do it late tomorrow night.
For me, posting roll isn't going to really weigh in on my quit. My job requires me to travel - a lot - and I'm not always somewhere where I'll be able to post roll. If not, so be it. However, I am more than willing to support others with this endeavor.
I've seen some posts on this site which basically equate to, "if you don't post roll each morning, you're a pussy and you're going to give in and chew again and you suck and you might as well just eat a whole can of dip now because if you don't post roll, the universe will collapse. Yeah, a little dramatic, but I've just ignored those posts. I HATE black and white answers. There are almost always, at the very least, two ways to do things. When it comes to quitting anything, the methods vary as much as the weather does day to day.....
Okay, gotta go!! Have a great weekend!
