Well hello. So far so good. I ususally have tried to quit using nicotine gum, and it has helped in the past. Anyone have any positives/negatives with quitting this way? I haven't had any today yet, would like to see if I can do it cold turkey. It is going to be tough. Anyways, my name is Brad, and I am from Iowa. I look forward to chatting with everyone.

Go cold turkey! The nic gum only delays the inevitable. You need to get off the nic. go through three days of physical withdrawal and be done with it. Besides, not sure how much you dip, but that nic gum is for smokers....dipping gives you a hell of a lot more nic so it probably won't help that much anyway.
And btw, welcome aboard! Great decision to quit.

Hey Brad congrats on making a great decision. My advice, keep the gum behind the counter with the rest of the tobacco at the store. It is only putting off the inevitable nicotine withdrawal. Just buckle up and get ready for a ride.
The one thing that you need to be aware of is that on this board we do not try. We do or do not. If you are on the fence about your resolve to quit, come back when you have made up your mind. If you are ready to sack up and make a daily commitment to not use tobacco products, then this is the place for you.
We get it done one day at a time by posting roll call. You should go to your quit group first thing every morning a promise to not use tobacco IN ANY FORM for that one day. Then do it again the next day. Sounds easy doesn't it, no tobacco for today. The catch is that you have to be a man of your word. That is what that post is.
I'm not going to lie to you, this weekend is going to suck. But you CAN do it. This board is full of people that are living proof of that. Just do not dip for 1 day, 1 hour, 1 minute, or 1 second at a time. Whatever it takes. In time you will have gone weeks without craving a dip.....as long as you stay quit! Remember that each portion of time that passes, your body has healed ever so slightly and you will not have to feel that way again.
Providing that you are ready to leave "try" out of it and are prepared to do what it takes, head on over to August 2008 quit group and introduce yourself. That group is filling up with quitters that are at the same point in their quit as you. Post roll and let them know a little about yourself.
Again, congrats and welcome to the board!

Brad-
Statistics would show cold turkey is your best bet to quit. I've tried it all and failed. 19 days ago I went cold turkey and got linked up with this site. The first few days can be brutal but it gets much better. I'm from Okoboji, IA. You?

I on the other hand, use the nic gum. Personally, I don't see anything wrong with it, and for me it's easier to ween myself off of 2mg gum, than dip (dip is MUCH stronger). I'll get hammered for advocating the gum, but for me, it works best. I don't think that just because something works for one, means it works for everyone else. My opinion....do whatever it takes to not use any tobacco...even if it's nic gum, it's still better than the dip.
Now is when everyone replies telling me that the nic replacement is just a gateway yada yada yada. That very well can be the case if you lack the willpower to quit, but if you really have the drive and willpower, you'll be fine.

I ususally have tried to quit using nicotine gum, and it has helped in the past.
I'm not going to hammer anyone for whatever method they use to quit, but this part of your statement stood out to me.
Think about it. It hasn't "helped" you quit in the past or you wouldn't be here quitting again. Maybe NRT isn't for you.
I will always advocate cold turkey, but will throw in that doing what it takes to quit is what you need to do. If the gum gets you quit use it. If you have used it and failed in the past, maybe it's time to try a different avenue.
You've already taken the smartest step in the battle, and that is getting involved here. The site works if you use it. Let me know if I can help you.

Brad, I know you will read alot of opinions on how to quit, and question yourself continually what will work for you. I have used snuff for 20 years until last Friday at 2:00pm. After reading about my options on this site and asking some questions, the basic fact is just quit!! I used sunflower seeds and smokey mountain herbal substitutue. After 3 days the desire for a dip was pretty much gone. I would reccommend quitting cold turkey, and using a herbal snuff to anyone. I am on day 7 and I everyday I ask myself why I waited so long to do it. The guys on this site are great, and will help you in every way and give you the boost you need.
Good luck on your quit, and be strong!! The final payoff is worth it!!

I'll second these comments.
You need to try something different. Obviously the gum didn't do it. Maybe the gum and joining this site will. It's up to you.
All I know is, the biggest part of a successful quit is honest self-awareness. You need to be honest with yourself. You know what will work and what won't. You know if you have the resolve to quit. See through the addiction for what it truly is...just a bad habit that can be broken.

All I can tell you is do what works for you. I quit a 30 year habit cold turkey, others here used other means of quitting. The main thing is commit to the fact your done with snuff forever. Then just take it one day at a time. I could have never qit without this site so stay close and use it and all it's resoures. Well that's my two cents and welcome to the rest of your life quit!
