Title: Before it Kills me
Post by: littledip on April 27, 2017, 04:05:00 PM
So my dipping habit began when I reconnected and became re-involved with my now Husband who introduced me to Kodiac. I tried it and then continued using it for 4 years, never more than 4 times a day and sometimes only once but the craving is almost always there to have that little pouch between my lip and gums. I have tried quitting on a few occasions but it is difficult when the person you spend the most time with, is also an non quitting addict. I am tired of the receding gum lines, new wrinkles and butt breath. I think about all the face products I use and vitamins I take and feel like an idiot when I read about what chew is doing to my body...I spend so much time exercising and eating right and then negate it all by putting in a chew. I hope to find the support I need from other quitters as there will be none from home. Already from what I've read I am encouraged. Thank you for giving me a place to vent and whine.

Littledip - first, congratulations on wanting to quit, and for having the guts to reach out. That's not an easy thing.

I don't know how much you've read about KTC, so just in case, here's a link to something that explains how things work here: Here's How You Quit... Ball Is In Your Court Now (https://www.killthecan.org/heres-how-you-quit-ball-is-in-your-court-now/)

Your next step is to get yourself on roll. Posting roll means giving a bunch of us anonymous yahoos on the internet your promise that you won't use nicotine today. It's what we do here, and we do it because it works. You make that promise... then keep it. Then you wake up the next day, and make that promise again. Because quitting forever is hard and scary, but quitting for a day? Heck, if I can do that, anyone can!

Here's a video about Posting Roll on KTC (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RmDgTPJ6HyM). If you post roll - and I really, really urge you to do so - you'll do it in the August (http://forum.killthecan.org/topic/30223454/5/) group.

The first three days are going to be really rough. Drink lots of water. If you're walking by a bathroom and not feeling the need to duck in, drink more :) That, and exercise (if you can), will help flush the nicotine out of your system. A couple of links to help you understand what your body's going to be going through while you're quitting:

What To Expect When You Quit Dipping (https://www.killthecan.org/your-quit/what-to-expect-when-you-quit-dipping/)
Symptoms of Quitting Dip and Chew (https://www.killthecan.org/your-quit/symptoms-of-quitting-dip-chew/)

A lot of information, I know. That's just scratching the surface of what's available here, too. There are hundreds of other quitters who are here to talk with you, answer questions, and help you as best we can. We've all quit one day at a time, and we've all been where you are, and more than anything, we'd like to help you quit.

I quit with you today!

One thing you'll need to wrap your head around is that this ^^^ isn't correct.

It's an addiction, and you're an addict.

I don't say that to throw blame or anything because, hell, we ALL are. That's why we're all on some internet forum working towards the same goal... freedom.

The sooner you admit and understand about your addiction... the deeper your commitment will be.
So... where KTC is concerned, get involved and stay involved.

It works.

AJ... 1,473 days of freedom.

Thanks for all the encouragement, Being an avid reader I have already begun devouring the information available on this site, heading out to the gym and to get some gum! Read about cotton balls but I have an aversion to cotton balls and cannot imagine putting one in my mouth?! Anyone else have any ideas on tools for oral fixation? Be nice and get any dirty thoughts out of your head if you respond 'facepalm'' . Oh and I started Roll yesterday, got a little confused to see peeps from August 2016 on there but decided I didn't know all the ins and outs of this group and just ignored it.

I kind of like where AJ was going with getting into this mind set that we're dealing with addiction here. Even though you only used for 4 years or "4 times a day" you're just as much an addict as the person who dipped 2 cans a day for 30 years. Being quit is a way of life, no different than the health/fitness way of life you are following. And this way of life needs to be forever. No holes in your foundation, no weaknesses. And..that's where we come in; kudos to you for making this choice and coming here to do it.

Now a lot of people have used fake chew (usually mint leaf products)...I never used, but I hear it works pretty good. I was a gum person, but sunflower seeds, tea bags, beef jerky, drinking lots of water, are a number of options for the oral fixation part. The "oral fixation" is the "habit" ...you can break habits, but you must beat addiction.

There are a number of decent fake options (Smokey Mountain, Bacc-Off, Jakes, Etc.) Gum, seeds, McDonald's, will all work. I and others have resorted to used coffee grounds at one point or another! Really, anything can work. Strong craves usually only last a few minutes, so anything that can distract you for 10-15 minutes is usually a winner.

Frankly, after 5 minutes of sitting there with used coffee grounds in your mouth, you'll feel like such a jackass that you'll forget all about the crave.

Some of August '16 has been hanging around August '17 because the new groups are more lively and there's a certain nostalgia/ connection to the new August. Groups are never closed off. When you post roll, you're welcome to post anywhere on the site. I'll be posting support, offering advice and generally dicking around in August '17 because I want to help your group continue to be successful and because I get something out of it too.

I'd encourage you to post support in August '16 or some other older group. Support is always appreciated and it will help you dig in and build connections that will help you down the road.

I used tea tree flavored toothpicks from a healthfood store for a couple of months - wow, fresh breath instead of sewage breath, another win. I quit with you today.

When you promise every day and early, stating that you won't use for the next 24 hours, its that easy!!! Don't look at it as quitting long term cause that will make it seem impossible. Promise for the next 24 hours, wake up and do it again!! This site was made for the fact that we all walk in each other's shoes but we do it in our own way. So remember, that we know what you are going through, so we are here to support you!! Use us, abuse us, whatever you need to do!!! We quit with you every day, as you quit with us, share your digits and make sure that you talk through what you are feeling! Keeping it bottled up will only make it worse, I promise you that!! My number is only pm away..
