I've dipped since high school, which was about 14 years ago. Skoal Mint. It started as something to look cool as a ballplayer but eventually the addiction was real.
I've always been nervous about my mouth, and avoided the dentist for about 9 years because of that (ironically). I chipped a tooth about 2 months ago, and my anxiety reach an all-time high. So, I finally visited the dentist. My gums were in pretty bad shape, so they lectured me on tooth loss from gum disease, etc. I then went through a series of 3 deep cleanings. I had some deep pockets in certain areas, but they said it was all reversible and I'd be fine. I just still didn't feel right, but it wasn't enough to make me quit altogether. I cut back to 2 dips per day, from 4. I visited an oral surgeon about 6 weeks ago for consultation on wisdom tooth removal. I explained to him my gum issue, and he said I looked fine. I got my wisdom teeth removed about 4 weeks ago. They seem to be slow to heal completely. And, again, I just don't feel right in my mouth. I hear what the dentist and hygienist have said but the anxiety is just killing me. I plan to re-visit in about a week, if for nothing else but re-assurance.
I've passed the 72 hour quit mark as of this morning. Sleep has been spotty. I haven't noticed much in the way of bad dreams. I have an ulcer like sore on each cheek (not bad at all) but I'm not so sure that isn't from the wisdom teeth removal. All in all, my mouth feels better already.
Any help sleeping? I take Tylenol PM but it hasn't helped much.
Can I expect my mouth to start feeling better or worse as a move past the 72 hour mark?

Also, I would like feedback on Chantix. I'd really like to do this cold turkey, after failed attempts with Nicorette gum and patches. But, Chantix is an interesting possibility. I have Jake's Mint Snuff, just in case, but the texture is horrible and I would assume it's also not good for my gums.

Congratulations on your decision to change your life! I'm only 9 days into my quit ,but I'll give you the same scary advise that was given to me when I came here.
Go Cold Turkey. Period.
I used Red Seal Wintergreen or Skoal Fine cut for 33 years. You will be uncomfortable for a few days but then it'll start getting easier. I'm using Smokey Mountain Herbal Snuff as a alternative.
You are in the right place to make your quit happen. Read. Post Roll. Dedicate yourself daily to a nicotine free life.
Ya got this thing.

Welcome and congrats on your decision.
We only quit cold turkey!
For help sleeping, drink tons of water, exercise and eat healthy. Your body is healing and it will take time.
I still have anxiety about the damage I did to myself, it gets better, each day and week.
Post roll, each and every day, heal and build your quit skills.

Hang in there brother.

Thanks for the replies.
I think the anxiety about the damage I've already done is the worst part, as of now. I've got to get back to the dentist asap for some re-assurance. Well, hopefully it's re-assurance and not bad news. See how my head goes from good to bad so quickly. I don't think I was in the right mindset when I got re-assurance before. I think my mind is more determined now. Just working on changing some routines to aid the process of the quitting.
Also, I've always drank plenty of water and eaten healthy.
I believe I'm going to try melatonin for sleep tonight.

I use this stuff called natural calm from gnc. A magnesium supplement. Out like a light.
How does it feel to win at something you lost at every day for years ?? Victory and freedom are awesome. One day at a time, you are really gonna like the new you.
Exercise until you can't exercise any more. Then do 50 push ups and drink some natural calm. If you need anything hit me up. You are in the right place to keep winning.

On the anxiety about damage already done, you are not alone there. Reading around the site I saw a post by Chewie on that topic -- he said he still convinces himself he has cancer in spite of medical reassurances. Wish I could find that and link it for you. Hell I wish I could find that and read it again myself!
The main thing is today you are quit, and I am quit. We are healing instead of eating toxins. We will have weird sensations along the way. But it does get better.

Once again, thanks a lot for the replies.
I've used melatonin before with mixed results. So, I just bought something a little different called Calms Forte - "Relieves stress to help you sleep". We shall see. My sleeplessness is probably twofold as I take thermogenics and a pre-workout around 5:30 pm. This, coupled with the anxiety, is what's getting me.
I cant stop fooling around in my mouth with my teeth and gums. So many different feelings in there over the past several months. Hoping for the best.
And you are all right. I'm quitting. That's what's most important. The rest will happen as it should.

Rock congrats on your quit. Keep it up. I had major sleep issues for about 3 nights, so I feel for you brah. Do what you have to do to get through this beginning quit he'll. It wi get easier. And you will feel better. Post roll, read this site up and down, get involved with your bros. Tell yourself this when you can't sleep: I am quitting this nonsense one day at a time and my mind and body are getting better each day I quit.

Congrats on the quit. I'm coming up on my 30 day quit milestone. The mouth sores can come and go for several weeks. Mostly they happen in the first week. I didn't have this forum when I first quit and absolutely thought I was going to die! Luckily I found this site. I bought some anbesol for the mouth sores and that really helped. My anxiety was through the roof. My first week was hell but it's gotten easier each day. Just plan to do whatever it takes to get through this and rest as mush as possible. I've been taking a lot of Zinc and vitamin C plus lots of cough drops. Drink lot's of water, post Roll and beat this thing!

Thanks a lot

Absolutely no problem with my bowels moving. But, I do and always have eaten healthy - high protein with a good bit of fruits and vegetables. Plus, I take a multivitamin and a probiotic.
Another day down. Heading to bed. Hoping and praying for positive vibes in the morning.

I used 15mg of melatonin as prescribed by a doctor in college and it did help. Another suggestion is playing a self sleep hypnosis track on youtube as you lay down for the night. They are great at helping me clear my mind so I can rest. PM if you want help finding some.

congrats DRock. making that decision was the hard part. as for the anxiety, is there anything you can do to change the past? NO. you can only control the future. the damage is done and it will heal. you didn't do that damage to yourself overnight and it won't heal overnight either.
stay strong. we've all been there. it is possible!!!!!

I'm going to try something other than melatonin at first. I've taken 1-10 mg melatonin in the past with mixed results. I've never tried 15 mg, though so that may be my next try. Thank you.

Thank you. I really like this post about not getting here overnight. It is exactly what the hygienist told me. I'm just gonna keep working at it, praying, etc. Time heals all wounds.

It gets a lot easier. 24 days in and I'm not in the habit of reaching for the can anymore.
Just use your dip alternative, be it an herbal blend or a cotton ball (my preferred method). And just remember to keep saying no to yourself. Don't buy a can to test your resolve. Remove the temptation.
We've all been where you are and survived. Thousands of stress relievers and one particularly annoying deck of playing cards might not have, but we did. You will too.
-
Just over 4 days quit now.
I took the calming/sleeping meds last night with great success. I didn't fall right to sleep, but I did wake up far fewer times than nights previously. I did listen to some self sleep hypnosis for a little while, too. I think I will be using both of these regularly now.
I have to admit, I'm suddenly getting a few more frequent cravings for a dip. This morning was tough. But, I keep picturing the outcome I want versus the outcome that is likely if I cave. As the weekend approaches, I know it will get even harder. I'm a college football fiend and love to have some beers while watching the games. Usually, this also meant a couple of dips in between. Hopefully, I can resist.
My stomach is a bit tore up the last 12 hours. Not sure if this has anything to do with the quit.
-
Hopefully, I can resist.
You can do better than this bud. You will NOT use dip while watching football. See? That was just as easy to say and it gives you some confidence.
Think about it this way. You do not have any dip at your house (or at least you better not). So to dip while watching football this weekend, you're going to have to drink and drive to get to the store, then drink and drive all the way home, just to rot your teeth out and increase your chances of getting cancer. Not worth it.
You have to start manhandling this thing so it doesn't come back to manhandle you. Take the fight to nicotine, don't wait for nicotine to bring the fight to you.
P.S. the stomach stuff might very well last awhile. Drink tons of water, eat high-fiber foods, and try to workout regularly. I do all those things and it still took 45 days or so to straighten out the digestive system. Part of my penance.

I know I can do it. I just start rationalizing things sometimes. Rationalizing the irrational, I guess.
Just an update on my mouth. Overall, I think my mouth is feeling better. I do have 1 ulcer like sore on an inner cheek towards the back but, again, it's around where the wisdom teeth were extracted...so it could really have nothing to do with the quit. Not total comfortable with how the extraction sites are feeling since it's been almost 4 weeks since it was done. And, teeth could feel a little loose...which I was warned could be possible after such a deep cleaning of the pockets caused by gum disease. Buttttt, this all could be anxiety. Everything mentioned has improved in the last several days since quitting. I will be making an appointment with the dentist anyway for next week to ask every question possibly can. The more I know, the easier this will be.

It is anxiety. Every one of us went through this bullshit, which we caused ourselves. It is all part of the healing process.
Another win man. Great job!
I was a ninja for a whole lot of years, but my dentist always knew the truth. You are in good hands with your doctors. Try to focus on the positives... you are saving money, you are healing, you are winning, you aren't purposefully trying to get cancer... and the rest will fix itself. You are doing great.

DROCK, welcome man. Your in a good place here, its helped me tremendously. Ok, that being said a couple of tips for you alright? I AM VIRTUALLY IDENTICAL TO YOU (your story). I started as a senior in high school (18) and just have quit at 31 (13 years of use ). I was roughly 1 can every 2-3 days, first Timberwolf Wintergreen Longcut, then Grizzly Wintergreen Longcut, and the last 7 years Grizzly Wintergreen pouches (also 1 can every 2 days). That being said quit tearing yourself apart with anxiety, it does not help the process you are going through at all. Cancer is cancer because it eats and destroys everything around it, if you had it in your mouth it would be growing and you would know, trust your dentists because if they saw it they would know. Secondly, I am now coming up on 20 days without a dip, which until recently, I never thought I would be able to do....see I am just like you I LOVE COLLEGE FOOTBALL and playing Madden on my PS4 and those were things I always did with a chew in.....in fact that was my biggest fear, not being able to enjoy those things without a dip in....however IT CAN BE DONE! Now its tough, no doubt, but given time you can still watch football and not need a massive chaw in. The first week was rough, but the second week was PURE HELL for me....and now the third has been WAYYYY better, not easier but def better. That being said, all the dudes on here are right , it is important to get in a quit group and post up every day because there are many times your mind will mess with you and you will want to cave but if your like me, the thought of shaming these bros in my group always have kept me from doing it....its just like having someones back ya know? Anyways man, welcome and KEEP FIGHTING THE GOOD FIGHT! You can do this man, even though it is tough.

Glad the hypnosis tracks helped. I don't think I would ever sleep with out them.
I understand college football and drinking with a big chaw in. How I think of it are that wasn't me and those days are over. I am QUIT. I guess I might have it a little easier because I haven't been able to have any alcohol for 8 months due to medications.
This evening I have been having horrible cravings. Packed some raisins in and it seemed to have done the trick. Getting ready to hit the hay.
Stay strong and quit on.

Awesome, man. Thanks for the reply. I was about 3/4 can per day, Skoal Mint. I got 4 dips to a can. I never kept them in long. But, you're right, that wasn't me. I'm an extraordinarily healthy person with very few vices. Knocking back a few beers is something I like to do. Dipping was another vice. They went hand in hand sometimes. But I feel certain that I can do one without the other. I'm actually kinda looking forward to the challenge this weekend.

Anyone try Jake's mint chew? I bought a sample pack about a month ago, tried 1 flavor, hate it, and it's been sitting there. Any suggestion on flavor? Is it also bad for my gums? I plan to reach out on their website, too, for some guidance.

I hope your weekend goes great because my first two WERE EXTREMELY ROUGH, if yours turns out to be don't hesitate to reach out to all of us on here. Send a PM for a phone number if needed. I do have some Jakes, I tried three flavors- Wintergreen, Cinnamon, and Spearmint. Spearmint is the only one I really enjoy (I heard their Kola flavor is great too)....and I don't believe its bad for your gums as it is just Mint and all natural. See ya bud.

Thanks again for the reply. I really think I'll be okay. My mind is made up not to put tobacco in my mouth again. I have the Jake's Mint Chew just in case the oral fixation is too much. In the absolute worst case scenario, I can grab a small pack of nicotine gum. They sell small 10 piece packs now for like $3. That's probably not the best idea, but it's better than caving altogether. Again, that's absolute worst case scenario and something I really don't foresee happening. Having a plan in place that doesn't include giving up is what I think will be important.
Notable updates:
Through 5 days today, woke up feeling very fresh and rejuvenated and hopeful. I took an extra Calms Forte and listened to a new sleep hypnosis last night. I was legitimately hypnotized into a deep sleep. It was kind of a strange feeling. I woke up way less than I had been before. Heading in the right direction with rest/sleep. My mouth, as of this minute, feels better than it has in probably 5 years. Praying that all of the positive progress markers encourage me to stay quit instead of creating too much sense of comfort. That's up to me, though. It's almost as if I'm not sure I want the anxiety to go away or not. As far as the cloudiness that many have described, I can't say that this has been a big issue for me. At times, I zone out or am forgetful, but I think I've always had a little bit of undiagnosed ADD.
-
In the absolute worst case scenario, I can grab a small pack of nicotine gum.
Wrong. Do you know what the active ingredient in nicotine gum is? Do you know what you are addicted to? Hypothetically if you were an alcoholic, would you quit by giving up hard alcohol but drinking as many beers as you wanted?
Nicotine is what you're addicted to DRock. Dipping was your preferred method for absorption, but nicotine is your addiction. Nicotine gum, nicotine patches, cigars, cigarettes, vapors, dip, chew, snuff, snort. All off limits partner.
Keep the fake stuff going if it helps you, but stay away from anything with nicotine.
-
I understand and agree. And the plan is to continue cold turkey and/or with the fake stuff.
-

You've got this.
-

Glad to hear that DRock.
PM me any time if you need to vent or talk. I quit with you.
Dipping raisins are working better for me than Jake's mint chew right now.
-
Today has easily been the hardest day for me. As I move into the weekend, I'm beginning to rationalize the irrational more and more. My week days are pretty full with activities that keep th dip out of my mouth. Weekends have more opportunity and more things that I used to dip while doing. Staying strong.
-
My first (second, actually) attempt with Jake's Mint Chew. My only concern with this is the impact it will have on my gums. Obviously, it's better than putting a dip in but I'd still like an answer as to whether or not it will irritate/further harm/or prevent my gums from healing. I have an email in to the company right now. This attempt is much better than the first. The first time it was messy and got all over my mouth, etc. This time I made sure to pinch and place like an amateur. I used to just throw a wad of dip in and place it with my tongue. So far, so good.

In my opinion I use baccoff and it irratates my gums and tongue and from what I've gotten from others is pretty much same. Pull them boxers up snug , grab your sac and get this done! I dipped 38 year's , I'm on 258 nic free day's! I know damn well its n9 harder for you than me, it all comes down to how bad you want it! Quit on!

Keep the quit going DRock. I am just starting too and I am with you, PM me anytime. We will get through this. :)

This isn't an attempt. This is a quit.
In s few weeks you'll probably grow bored with the fake and throw it out. For now, do whatever you have to do to avoid nicotine. That is the only priority.
It will get better. Let me say that again... It will get better. What you are experiencing today is not what life will be like. I promise.

Thanks, as always, for the support.
Jake himself replied to my email within 10 minutes. Just as I thought, he said that anything placed between your gums and cheek could cause problems. But, it's better than the alternative. As a company, as counterproductive as it sounds, he says that they wish for everyone to only use the mint stuff for a brief period to help with the oral fixation. They're not there for long term customers.
The mint stuff wasn't overly enjoyable, but it did help. I may try it a few more times, when needed. But then I'll move away from that. I have all 12 flavors so we'll see.
-
I'm there with you, in spirit. Five days of football and no dipping. NFL on Thursday, High school on Friday, college on Saturday, NFL on Sunday and Monday.
We'll all get through this.

The mint stuff wasn't overly enjoyable, but it did help. I may try it a few more times, when needed. But then I'll move away from that. I have all 12 flavors so we'll see.
I used Smokey Mountain herbal snuff for the first 50 days or so. Tried Jake's, too. What he told you is pretty much spot on in that anything resting between your cheek and gum causes irritation. I'll level with you honestly - my mouth didn't truly start to heal until I stopped using the fake stuff, too.
Hooooowever, the number one priority should be putting as much distance between you and nicotine as possible. Use the fake stuff as much as you need to. Then the day will come like it has for me and many others where you either find yourself not using it as much, or in my case, saying "I really don't think I need this anymore" and stopping altogether.
As a dude who has basically been going to the dentist weekly as of late to get crowns and fillings done, I can understand that you want your mouth healed up. Believe me, I totally get it. But if you keep the nicotine in ANY form away from you and just use what tools you have, you'll get there. Just be patient with yourself.

Moving on through day 7. College football hasn't gotten me yet. My team, LSU, still set to play. That will be the big challenge.
Updates:
Sleepless last night again, even with the meds, hypnosis, etc. Insomnia has been off and on.
Anxiety has also been better, but off and on.
Cravings increasing considerably.
I keep going from constipation to upset stomach and back and forth.
Overall, my mouth feels okay. Days 3-5 were great as far as how my mouth felt. I still have a random ulcer on my cheek that hurts off and on. Also getting random gum/tooth pain, also off and on. But, as I've mentioned, I had 4 wisdom teeth (2 impacted) removed about 4 weeks ago so some of this could be lingering from that. Plan to make another appt with the dentist soon. As
Also previously mentioned, I went through a month of deep cleaning that I was told reversed whatever issues I was having with my gums (despite bone loss and regression, but nothing bad enough that they referred me to a periodontist).
It's becoming more of a roller coaster than it was initially.
Pray for me, I'll pray for you.

That's great DRock!
I'm on day 8 and I have yet to break into a cold sweat today. This is the first day of no sweating since I started my quit last Saturday. B)B
That Auburn game was nuts. I can't believe the Jacksonville coach decided to let the clock run out and go to overtime.... :P
I promise to root for LSU if you promise to make it to day 8!

I'm glad Auburn pulled it out. I don't want them coming to Baton Rouge mad next weekend.

5 beers in and LSU game on the way. Cravings have been bad. Using my mint chew as we speak. So far, so good. This is only my 2nd time in 7 days having to reach for an alternative.

Hang in there - I am rooting for LSU and more for you to never have a dip again! B)B

Alcohol makes it tougher at the beginning. Stay close to the site bud. Enjoy the game.

The beers nor the game is worth dipping again! Be smart! Goodluck tigers!

Alcohol has killed many new quits.
Do not let your mind get bent because you are drinking. It lowers your inhibitions, and it will make saying no all the more difficult. Don't be the dumb ass who shows up posting a Day 1 because you drank too much and grabbed a dip because "it was there".
If you posted your word today, then today should be no different than any other day, and dip should be off the table. That's how this works. Be a man of your word and be Quit.
