Like I promised a few days ago, I'm no longer eating the NIC gum.
I'M 100% NIC FREE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I've got my sugar free trident gum, my sunflower seeds, and ready to beat this fucking bullshit addiction.
My motivational factor is simply looking at my 2 little boys.
I appreciate everyones input over the past week, I know I was pissing a lot of you off by saying I was chewing the NIC gum and with good reason. But like I said before, I don't want to try and fool myself or anyone else on this site.
So today is Day 1, next stop is to the DEC 2010 to post roll call.
KEEP ON ROCKIN' IN THE FREE WORLD!

Hey Skoal Monster, believe in me brother!!
I'm not fucking around this time!!!!
Whats your quit plan???
-
My quit plan is to never dip again.
And when I get the urge I look at my 2 little boys.
I beat a cocaine addiction ten years ago and have confidence in myself that I can beat this one too.
-

Same games so dont get complacent, the only difference between a coke addict and a nic addict is the choice of drugs.

Agreed my brother. The last thing/thought running through my head is that this will be easy. However I know I can do it, especially with the help of family, friends, and the people on this site.
This site is the best fucking thing I've seen for support in a long time!!!!

This site is excellent for support but you have to use it. Post roll every day, take the information offered and you can do this.

First off, a pat on the back for myself.
I moved out of Newbie phase and into Trollop phase today! :D
I have my life insurance exam next Tuesday(sep 21st), this will be 25 days into my quit. Does anyone have any experience/knowledge if the Cotinine will be out of my system by then? Keep in mind I've dipped a can a day for 27 years.
The difference in rates for Nic in the system is astronomical. Not sure if I should postpone the exam for another month.
Any info would be helpful....Thanks guys.

I dipped a day before my life insurance physical, drank 2 gallons of water, and the by-product of nicotine did not show up in my test results. I did this twice. So, I think 25 days in with no nicotine, you should pass with flying colors.

All the literature I've read says 3-4 days and it's out of your system. I'm no doctor, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night.

The half-life of cotinine is greater than that of nicotine. When I had mine way back when I was told to quit for 2 weeks so that cotinine gets out of my system. I drank plenty of water and exercised quite a bit.
However my suggestion would be to do some google searching to see if your insurance company tests your blood for nicotine or cotinine. But seeing that you're 25 days into your quit I really wouldn't worry about it.

It also depends on the company, some say you have to be off it for a year and the pro rate it. I have no idea how they know this but you may want to check the wording just in case.
-
Brian you do realize right that you still have to lie right? if they say have you ever used tobacco you say no, or else your rates will be higher. My friend sells life insurance, i have gotten many policies from him on and off tobacco. The 25 days is fine, but don't say you used it.
if you can't live with that, prudential is the only insurance carrier i know of that differentiates between smokers and dip. before i quit i had a "chewers" policy, the rates were still high but not as high as a smoker.

LOL!!!
Oh I will absolutely be lying!! Just don't want to get test results thrown back in my face prooving that I lie.
I'm not going to sweat over it. If they say I'm a nic user I'll tell them to fuck off and find another company.
Unless they pull a Sienfeld on me and put me on the black list!! hahaha

Excellent! Lie, lie, lie.
There is no black list.
Lying is way better than having the kid in the next cubicle peeing in a cup like he used to when i used to have to get exams. the worst was when he got stage fright and then i had to have my boy call up the examinor and rip up the paperwork and re-do the test. What a loser i was.
good job on the 25 days or so!
-
been fighting cotinine addiction for years and still can't stop
hell. i can't buy life insurance at all without it costing me pretty much my salary, but lie like a rug if ya gotta...nicotine should be gone unless it stays in the hair or something
-
According to the Foundation for Blood Research:
"Depending on how high your level is to begin with, your level could drop to that of a nonsmoker in 7 to 10 days."
Their site made no mention of chewing and I am pretty sure guys like us were taking in a motherfucking shitload of nicotine from which our bodies were developing cotinine. Seems like 21 days should be sufficient.

Hello All,
I hit my 30 day mark today and just wanted to say thank you to everyone on this site. I've tried quitting many times in many ways only to fail. I can say with all honesty that this site has made the difference for me staying quit this long, the longest of my dipping life.
I also want to thank my wonderful wife for being so patient with me and encouraging me to find a support group to help me quit.
I'm 40 years old, been dipping since 13. I have 2 little boys, 4 and 2, that are my world. A world that for the first time is Nicotine free.
I hope and pray that my sellfish behavior all these years don't come back to haunt me, and that my wife and kids will have me around for a long time.
I'm a proud member of the December group and look forward to simply making my next day of being Nic free, and trying to help anyone that lets me.
ROCK ON MY QUIT BROTHERS AND SISTERS!!

What's up my Quit Brothers and Sisters.
Quick question: I've got a good friend trying to Quit smoking and told her about this site and how much it helps me.
Does anyone know of a good support site for smokers?
Thanks,

This site has helped a lot of smokers. And lady smokers at that. SamCat and TattedQuitter are two BadAss quitters that I know of that are still very active in the forums. I suggest you PM them for some council.

Hardcore relapse policy on that site:
"Freedom's relapse policy is simple. Once we understand the Law of Addiction it deprives us of any legitimate excuse for relapse. Any member who relapses shall permanently lose posting privileges.
NEVER TAKE ANOTHER PUFF, DIP OR CHEW!
NO NICOTINE EVER!"
I imagine most of the people who cave here never truly understand and accept the Law of Addiction. Once I accepted that I was an addict for life, quitting one day at a time became a reality. I know my quit day every day. Even when I haven't posted roll for a month, I still keep track. I will not hide from my addiction. It doesn't work that way.

Thanks for all the input.

My name is Brian. I was Quit for 1750 days. I smoked a cigar. I ruined a wonderful run of Quit. I let down myself. I let down my family. I let down my Quit group, DEC 2010 GUARD.
Almost 5 years. Now it's gone. I'm starting over, completely ashamed, completely humbled. Emotions are hard right now.
For new guys reading this it must seem out of the realm of possibility. To be Quit for so long and let it slip away.
WELL GUESS WHAT- YOU ARE NEVER SAFE.
YOU ARE NEVER CURED.
YOU MUST BE ON GUARD 24/7, 365.
THE NIC BITCH IS WAITING. SHE IS PATIENT.
I am an addict. Period. There is no escaping it. The second you think you've got it beat is when you are set up for failure.
That's all I got for now.

Holy hell dude.
I'm not even gonna bother jumping all over your ass. The minute some of your peeps read this you're in for it. You know the 3 questions... pony up bro. Dig deep and answer true... everybody needs to hear it. For me... what thought process blew right past your defenses and caused you to just give up? Step by step... answer for us AND yourself.
-
That's hell dude. I'm a rookie but I quit with you. You got this. Semper Fi

Thanks Marine.
AJ- yes, my group is aware and I've been ripped. But also supported.
The process started early in the day. I was in the wedding party and we were getting ready a few hours before. We starting pounding beers and one of the guys busted out a box of cigars for later in the evening. It stuck in my head and the Nic Bitch began her work. I kept myself busy being caught up in the wedding activities and drinking. By the time the box of cigars came out I had made up my mind that I would have one and would hide it from my group, never to admit it. My wife tried to stop me but I was too stubborn.
I didn't have my plan in place.
I posted roll every day but became complaisant in my Quit, took it for granted that all was well. I let my defenses down and failed.
-
Thanks Marine.

Last post was June 8th. It is likely that is when the nic bitch first had his ear and not 'over the weekend" at the wedding... Nonetheless, this is probably about he weakest story I have ever heard if that is possible... I've got a long way to go before 1750 days. I quit tobacco only 637 days ago but I ain't going back because I can't live that life again! None of us here can!

Brian,
I posted this a few days ago when someone else caved and said they had gotten complacent. I meant every word of it.
COMPLACENCY....What a word. SEEMS HARMLESS DOESN"T IT BUT ITS NOT. Everyday people are tricked and harmed by it. In the Military we used to call it a Death Sentence. BE VIGILANT AWAYS AND KNOW YOUR TRIGGERS.

I didn't have my plan in place.
I posted roll every day but became complaisant in my Quit, took it for granted that all was well. I let my defenses down and failed.
Did you post roll on the day you caved and had the cigar?
Last post was June 8th. It is likely that is when the nic bitch first had his ear and not 'over the weekend" at the wedding... Nonetheless, this is probably about he weakest story I have ever heard if that is possible... I've got a long way to go before 1750 days. I quit tobacco only 637 days ago but I ain't going back because I can't live that life again! None of us here can!
I used to say that when I was at 637.
You are an addict just like me.
And somewhere along the way, you forgot it. Time to remember again. Or you'll get to do this again later.
Agreed.
That's the point I was making.
You know the deal. No sense drilling that home. Best thing you can do now besides staying quit is to show Sept how it's done.

I cannot think of any suitable words for something like this. Simply terrible all around.

I agree. There are not suitable words.

It's another forum to say what's happening. Definitely not a pleasure or goal mine.

I agree. This should be merged with your old intro thread (http://forum.killthecan.org/topic/10229802/1/#post913868). (I made it easy to find for the Mods)

To my dear friend Brian,
Congratulations on 365 man I remember when you showed up in the dojo defeated and ashamed, but look at you now! You have become an excellent leader and a shining example of how to overcome a cave. I'm proud of you man and I'm honored like always to quit with you!

Congrats on the year and bringing up something I hadn't thought of yet. At my dads I had always smoked a cigar with him and the older guys in his neighborhood. I'd better give him a call to let him know I'm quit so he doesn't bring a cigar to Fathers Day next weekend for me. Seriously this could have wrecked me too. I don't do well with surprises like that.
Quit with you today Brian.

All I can say is you've just given the KTC community a shining example of a stellar recovery from a horrific fall. Proud to be quit with you, Brian!
