Hi all,
I don't have some amazing story of how I quit after a huge amount of years...Smoked and dipped years ago (total time 8 years, ages 12-20). Quit three times using the patch.
Started up again last year in SERE school, brought dip with me to trade for food, ended up using it to stay awake and not feel so hungry. Started smoking after that, used e cigs to get off of real cigs, then dip and snus because I got tired of tinkering with e cigs.
Tried cold turkey yesterday and today, didn't make it through either day. Currently wearing a patch! Actually bought them on my lunch break and some lozenges.
Tried some of Jake's mint chew, but it just irritated me to have something in my lip that didn't make me feel different.
The fog for me is strange...for me it feels like coming down from a huge high off of weed (from what I can remember of it, I don't currently use marijuana and haven't in years and years), with cravings in between. Timing my cravings today, they lasted anywhere from 14-30 minutes.
I couldn't overcome the fog at work, so I am going with a patch wean over the next several weeks before I am completely off of nicotine, my hopes is that when I am off it won't be so bad. Could be wrong and it will still suck horribly, I'll let ya know
Read a couple of e books about going cold turkey, and it made sense to get the worst over in three days, but my job requires me to be sharp. The next time I have that many days off will be the end of the month, and I don't want to wait, so patch for me with a weekly decrease interspersed with some lozenges during the transition periods.
Huge kudos to all of you who can go cold turkey! I am getting off the nicotine, just going to be a little slower for me.

You can do this, and thinking that you can't means that you don't want to quit.
No matter how you cut it, you are going to have to get off the drug. And it is going to suck. There's no sugar coating it, and if it were easy, we wouldn't be slaves to overpriced nicotine products that promise us we can quit.
Toss the stuff.
Be a man.
You can do this. You are not special.
-
If there is quit in you at all, it is in you now. This very moment. If you have the balls to accomplish this, you have them now. Its a matter of believing that you can do it. That you are strong and worth more than being a slave to a chemical.

How about instead of me coming to your house and beating the shit outta you constantly for 3 days, I'll just come over and give you a 10 minute ass kicking once day for a month. What you are doing...WILL NOT WORK!!!! All of us addicts on this site have tried your method before we found this website. It didn't work for us then.....and it's not going to work for you right now. Now sack up and rip that shit off your arm! And then....you can come talk to us!
A little extra reading for you while you make up your damn mind:
http://www.whyquit.com/whyquit/LinksAAddiction.html (http://www.whyquit.com/whyquit/LinksAAddiction.html)
If you understand your addiction, it will be easier for you to quit!

A,
My job too requires me to be sharp, I'd bet that most of us here don't have jobs where it's o.k. to be a fuck up. I know, I know, YOU are a special butterfly. If you had a problem with vodka and you drank to much do you think you could fix your alcohol problem by drinking beer! I'm being a bit of a smart ass here to try to drive this point home - To quit using nicotine you are going to use nicotine and you think that's going to work well for you? Man up dump the nic and power through the next 3 days. It will be hard and you will have to focus on doing your job but if you want it you CAN do it.

Correct, you do not have an amazing story. You are not an unique and special butterfly. You are an addict. I should know. I recognize your story. I am an addict. So lets go through your post.
1. You have not quit 3 times with the patch. You quit zero times with the patch.
2. You did not bring dip to trade for food. You brought dip to complete your planned cave.
3. You did not use dip to stay awake and not feel hungry. You use because you are an addict.
4. Started smoking. Makes sense. Why? It has nic. Just like dip and patches. Do you see where YOU are going? Oh, I forgot to include snus.
4. You tried to quit today. Epic fail. Now wearing patch. I believe this to be true.
5. You prefer nic in your lip to mint. I also preferred dip to mint in the day. Not any more though.
6. I will quickly sum up the rest. You are going patch. You have gone full circle. See #1 above. My prediction this time? Fail.
So, I am going to quit busting your balls now. I know it sucks. You are not unique. Your job is no more special than mine. You are simply hooked on nic and you could care less how you get it.
We have a plan that is 100% successful. You may not fine tune it to make it fit your needs. You must fine tune YOU to fit the plan. What is the plan? Read the welcome center. Post roll every day with a promise not to use. Honor promise. Simple. No patches, no cigs, no dip, no gum, NO NIC.
Say it with me. I quit today. You...can...do...this. You have support now. Focus on today only. 1 day at a time.
Go post roll
-
Bullshit to everything you say! You just as well go out there and buy the cheapest form of nicotine you can find and use it until you're ready to quit. And I seriously doubt that that is really in your plans. Please prove me wrong!

This is a crockpot of shit. I could break it down word by word but I won't waste my time. "My job requires me to be sharp". That's good bread right there. I'm sure the rest of us have jobs where we can be dull. Seriously dude, grow a pair or go post your "I'm gonna ween off nicotine with the patch" fairy tale on facebook so all your butt buddies can tell you how proud they are of you and wish you "luck".
This sites for MEN who have to carry their balls around in a God damn wheel barrel, not a coin purse. (Sorry female quitters).

For God's sake. Either quit or don't. This kind of nonsense just gets under my skin.... Start posting roll and prove me wrong amigo. I don't believe you will quit - and for the record, I have a 100% correct record of calling out fraudulent quitters. 100%!!! You gonna be the guy to break that streak? I doubt it....

Guys have a point. You can do this if u want to but don't post garbage up here. What I have learned over the past month is you need to want this and if u do this team will support you unconditionally. I dipped for 28 years. I thought I wanted to stop for the past 20. I realized a month or so ago I never really wanted to now.
I hope u choose to join the team. We need more recruits. Post roll!
-
whether you think you can or you can't - you're right. just sac the fuck up and quit, dump the shit and live through the hell. i'm on day 36, its much easier than it was days 1-3, but its still a challenge. i made the choice that it would be worth it. i made the choice to put that shit in my lip all those years ago, so now i'm the one that has to pay the fucking piper and deal with the suck of quitting, and so do you
-
I'm pretty certain I've never read more excuses and bullshit in one post, ever. That was epic. All the brothers posting before me here have made good points, but I want to put it simple. Not rude, not overly dramatic..... just simple.
STOP OVERTHINKING IT!!
Quit. Right now. No nicotine. No patches. No excuses.
Just quit.
Post a promise to stay that way.
Honor your promise.
Repeat.
It ain't complex.

Looks like I was wrong about this site, chock full of tough guy assholes I see.
Somebody uses a different method and you basically tell them to fuck off.
I'll quit on my own terms, not the terms you want to push on me.
Welcome to my spam box bitches

I challenge you to drop the nicotine patches and then see if you get a warmer reception. This is a nicotine cessation website. Therefore, we cannot tolerate active members that are using nicotine. All we're saying is that cold turkey is the way we do it, and it's the way YOU need to do it. It's worked for thousands of members here.
Drop the patches and post roll.
Quit Like Fuck.

I see a whole bunch of strangers that give more of a shit about you, then you do of them. I see guys taking you to task and calling you out. I see guys reaching out to you, showing you how you can beat nicotine with one felled swoop.
You can't see cuz you're an addict, and you don't want to see yet.
Welcome to reality bitch.

Is Douche-bag one word or two?
-
ok I need to speak as I was thinking how to address this.
1) You are trying to quit maybe you have put it aside for an hour, a day... so you are starting to feel the withdraw an the irritability.
2) you have not completely understood the advice that every one here has posted for you as we look out or your best interests in health. Look at what has been said......
a- quit now why wait as nicotene withdrawl only takes hold when you quit it, period, no matter what form it is in.
b- just state the truth and understand that you are an addict like the rest of us... he it was not until I understood this that I then wanted the quit
I think you need to take another look, remove the emotion and realize that this is where you need to be, as you do want to quit, and this place helps you quit by providing tons of resources along with friends, that if you use the site correctly will develop into brothers and family, to help you QUIT. Which is what we all want.
-
Y'all know what WON'T be in his spam box? Nicotine.
Cause we're all quit.
-
We will be here if and when you are ready to quit. We hold no grudges. This is not the first conversation of this sort we have had with a drive by quitter.
That said, you had a whole buch of quit sherpas arrive to get you to the top of the mountain. They know the way up. They have been there before. Me thinks you can't buy that kind of help. Certainly not from Big-Patch Nicotine Delivery Company.

You do not have a different method to quitting. Your method keeps you addicted forever. There is no cutting back to quit, doesnt work. You know it and so do we.
I can tell from your tone you already know more about quitting than we do so I wish you luck with your "other" method. But I do have to ask;If you have it all figured out with your new quit method why are you here?
Don't come to our site and tell us our way doesnt work when thousands remain quit daily using our method. Your patch, snus, fake cig method will fail. I promise you it will.
When you are serious about quitting come back by and let us know. We will be here waiting...
-
Enjoy your patches sweetheart! At least until you pick the cigs, snus or chew back up.
Quit or die. Your choice.
It's so simple. Not easy, but simple.
-
Ah come on. Why'd you have to go and do that Blue? It was gettin' all quitastic in here and you had to pull the tough guy card. We've heard it all before. We're cyber-bullies. We get it. But I've never seen a bully act like a bully for the benefit of the person they were bullying. That's just not how it works here. nobody wants you to leave. We know this place works and why. We are all quit like fuck because of this place and because of the tough love - not in spite of it.
Don't come in here, shit on our furniture and piss on our rugs, then expect us to be happy about it. There are many cessation programs out there. pick one. but this one is free and it works. you just gotta follow the program.

Man up or ship out. If you can't take the way we quit, you won't stay quit if you decided to stick around. It is getting colder in the year, time for the special butterfly to construct its cocoon and emerge from it in the spring as just what they went into as...
AN ADDICT.
Bring your anger and quit to me, I'll keep you quit with the help of my brothers in here.

EWWWWW, NOT THE SPAM BOX!!!!! There is no "different method" here...tough guy asshole. Come back and say you're going cold turkey and I will support you to no end.

Same goes here. I'll quit with you every day. I'll help you understand how the site works. I'll give you my phone number. I'll talk you down from a ledge if need be. I'll share my experiences and my journey to 136 days. Not very long is it? Just a drop in the bucket really... It's 136 days more than you have. You wanna quit? Then post roll in January 2013 right now. Day one. If you had read anything prior to posting, you would have known people were not going to accept that patch business. There are other sites for that - I could be wrong but KTC lite may be one. Maybe thats more your speed - if so then fine. More power to you. But that doesn't fly here. I said I could spot fradulent quitters - It's a specialty of mine. Prove me wrong.

You can lead a horse to water..... When AA tells alcoholics to switch to wine coolers to quit drinking . Your plan will work.
When drug counselors agree that quitting heroin is a matter of staying in withdrawal and using less heroin . Your plan will work.
When using nicotine to quit nicotine works, your plan will work.
That dog won't hunt. Don't believe me ? Do the math. Your patch has substantially less nicotine than chew. Your in withdrawal now, because of that. Proper use of the patch means your going to stay in withdrawal for weeks. 3 days is easier than weeks last I checked. More than 90% of all successful long term quits are cold turkey. (American cancer society) That means the success rate of the patch blows . I think the ten percent probably succeeded in spite of the patch not because of it. Did you know there has never been a study showing any effectiveness of using the patch to quit dipping? All your doing is making it harder. When your ready let's quit.
When you agree to not use nicotine, to quit using nicotine. Our plan will work

I think I read somewhere that 7% of all patch users quit successfully with it. It also said that if you are trying the patch for a second time that the success rate is less than 1%.

I heard there's a bunch of suits in Big Pharmacy laughing their asses off at all the dumbasses willing to spend fifty bucks on a twenty-five cent box of gum so they can slowly feed their addiction and torture themselves with constant withdrawal.

Very interesting article I found today.....
Nicotine Warning for Cold Turkey Quitters
Roughly 80-90% of all new quitters attempt to quit cold turkey (abrupt nicotine cessation). If you are one of them then you need to know that many highly respected websites contain advertisements, quitting instructions and articles created by the pharmaceutical industry for the purpose of getting you to purchase nicotine (which they have renamed medicine) and use it (which they have renamed therapy). Their super slick marketing is designed to make you quickly believe that you have very little chance of succeeding unless you rush-out and purchase nicotine weaning products such as the nicotine patch, nicotine gum or nicotine lozenge and immediately put nicotine back into your bloodstream. They do not want you to believe in "you." They do not want you to reach for education, understanding, new skills and support, as honest tools that make dreams come true at rates that make those achieved by their weaning products laughable.
Sadly, very few sites are sharing useful, recent and honest NRT data with quitters. Those with a financial stake must keep secret the fact that a March 2003 NRT study review by paid pharmaceutical industry consultants combined and averaged all seven over-the-counter nicotine patch and gum studies and found that 93% of those who "believed" and "trusted" in the nicotine weaning message failed and relapsed to smoking nicotine within six months ( link to full text of March, 2003 study ). Nor will those receiving donations or profits for allowing nicotine to be marketed at their websites warn you that too many among the 7% who do quit smoking for six months have instead become permanent chemical captives to the very product they purchased to help them break nicotine's grip upon their mind. Nor will they tell you that if you have previously tried and failed while using nicotine weaning products that, according to two nicotine patch recycling studies, your odds of relapse during a second attempt may be as high as 100%.
But most importantly, these sites continue to refuse to caution the 80-90% of new quitters who arrive having quit cold turkey, that if they have remained 100% nicotine free for 72 hours that their blood is now 100% nicotine-clean, 90% of nicotine's metabolites have passed through their urine, and that for them chemical withdrawal has peaked in intensity and is now beginning to gradually subside. Any nicotine use at this point constitutes chemical relapse that will require them to repeat nicotine detox all over again. This is the "Law of Addiction."
But take heart if you are quitting cold turkey. According to the American Cancer Society's Cancer Facts Figures 2003 report, 91.2% of all successful long-term quitters are today quitting entirely on their own without using Zyban, Wellbutrin, hypnosis, acupuncture, magic herbs, and without toying with any gradual nicotine weaning products like the patch, gum, lozenge, spray, or inhaler.
You'd think that government researchers would be heavily engaged in studying "their" method of quitting and "their" secrets. You'd think that they'd be developing websites to service the cessation needs of the 80-90% of all new quitters who they know are today engaged in a cold turkey quitting experience. You'd think that their sites would have warnings to protect cold turkey quitters from pharmaceutical grade nicotine relapse. You'd think that government and major health non-profits would have lots of articles on how to take the mystery and cold out of quitting cold.
Sadly, it simply isn't happening. The pharmaceutical industry is making billions selling nicotine to nicotine addicts, their sphere of influence extends beyond your wildest imagination and they know that the only way to continue to increase market share and profits is by continuing their campaign to destroy the credibility of earth's most productive means of quitting - abrupt nicotine cessation.

I used to get the gum for all day meetings, family gatherings, flights and other places where putting a Copenhagen in my lip would not have been socially acceptable.
Freedom from nicotine is so sweet. I don't miss always having to make sure I had a supply of chew, gum, etc for whatever I was doing.
Until you make the choice to throw that crap out and quit, you're nothing but a slave.
