Title: Getting worse
Post by: Nkraft on April 11, 2013, 10:49:00 PM
I'm 41. I started chewing in college only on Thurs and Fridays where we would go out. I've quit for 6 months at a time. My friends tell me Im great at quitting :) Always fell on nights where I had a couple too many drinks. Always seemed OK as it was once maybe twice a week for a couple hours. Dentist doesn't help as I get checks have healthy gums and even comments they cannot tell I chew. The last year I started to chew when fishing and driving - they became my triggers. I cannot go into the gas station or I buy a tin. Then as I work from home when I don't travel, it became chew and coffee from 6am-noon every day. Now, I can barely go 10 min awake without one in. I'm a business professional but every time I travel I chew chew chew. Today, I chewed in the shower after waking up for the first time. I've tried herbal chews but haven't found a good one yet. Have two young sons and don't want to die from something stupid like this. I need advise...it's killing me not to chew as I'm typing this....

Welcome excellent choice-- if you are serious about quitting you are in the right place. KTC is filled with bad ass quitters that will help you along the way. Step 1 toss all of your nic. This is a cold turkey site. Then go to July quit group introduce yourself and post roll. Then come on back to intros and update us. Feel free to ask me any questions how this site works.

By the way as you will undoubtably hear from some vets you have not quit before just paused

Robbie day 59--I am quit and so can you

Its a mother fucker, it really is.

First things first. You're an addict. Might be the first time you've heard that and maybe you don't like it, but its true.

You may have started it as a once in awhile "hobby", but no more. The shits got its hooks into you and sounds like they are getting deeper by the minute. LIFE is now a trigger for you .

Also fuck the dentist, even if he gives you a clean bill of health, so the fuck what.

Dude...you are chewing in the mother fucking shower. I'm not making fun of you either...I did it a million times.

Hell I was a ninja and used to dip on the shitter. Fucking spit on my DICK AND BALLS a few times. Yeah, that's normal behavior. What a fucking loser I WAS.

You really want to quit. Forget about your dentist, forget about doing it soley for your kids. Do it for YOU. Nobody else. Quitting for your kids is great and all but the adrenaline from that will only get you so far.

I wish I had some magic trick or short cut for you. But I don't. Its gonna suck, especially the first 3 days when you detox from that shit. After that its the mind games.

Like I said. There are no short cuts or magic pills. You will have to walk the same path as the rest of us.

Post you promise to not use nicotie daily, fight scratch and claw minute by minute or even second by second if you have to, until you build up a toolbox of quit and things get easier.

I can't say when that will be but I can tell you it WILL come and you feel a sense of pride and freedom that you have never felt before.

Its time to grow up and quit this shit. It won't always be easy, but it will always be worth it.

Best news for you is you have us to help you. We've been in your shoes, we can help you. Don't be afraid to reach out to us. That's why we are here. Use us

Welcome on the greatest decision ever, quitting. You got some great advice. Man up and take it all in.

This site has both changed and saved my life, and itÂ’s really quite simple:

Post Roll: Why (http://forum.killthecan.org/index.php?showtopic=120)? How (http://forum.killthecan.org/index.php?showtopic=50)?
Every day you log into your “Group”, a bunch of guys all quitting together and going through the same suck, fog, cravings, etc. You “Post Roll”; add your name and the number of days quit that you are. This is your promise, a pledge to your quit brothers and sisters, to yourself, and to everyone else here on KTC to not use nicotine in any way, shape, or form, for the next 24 hours. Keep your promise. A man is nothing if his word is no good.

Get Involved:
Read: Introductions (http://forum.killthecan.org/index.php?showforum=25) and HOF Speeches (http://forum.killthecan.org/index.php?showtopic=90). Read the banter in other groups. Read the non-dip discussions in the Wilcard (http://forum.killthecan.org/index.php?showforum=11) section when you want to get away from thoughts of dip. By doing this you will realize that you are not alone in the feeling you are having. You will gain strength though others. And, you will get to know these people on a personal level, which adds accountability.

Send out a few PMs:
Send out a PM to someone in your group, or to someone that posted something that you related to. Offer your phone number. I bet you will get a phone number in return. Store those numbers in your phone and USE THEM in a moment of weakness. Sending a text out has prevented me from caving more than a few times. Sometimes I didn’t even need a response, just taking a few seconds to text was all it took to get me thinking straight again. Other times the response I got was, “you do NOT have permission to cave”, which I took to heart.
Every tool you need to QUIT and remain QUIT is here, for free, but you have to want it. No one can quit for you, but we can offer support whenever you need it.

get some digits--text, email, everything to keep your mind off the shit

send a text or chek in on the site when you face your triggers

There is a notable contradiction in this post. I was getting ready to give you the welcome, the sucks, the newbie advice that still seems so newbie, and then you said, "Tin and spitter waiting in the car for the four hour drive home."

Typo, right?

First thing is to throw that shit OUT of the car as soon as you open the door. Don't be a dumbass and keep it - that is a guaranteed FAIL.

The minute I quit I had a full 20 oz spitter and 1-1/2 cans in the car. I stacked both cans and put the spitter on top right in the parking lot, then got up to 40 mph and annihilated them.

Get a # from one of your fellow quitters and have them on the phone when you open that car door! Addiction is very powerful, it makes us do the stupidest things. Still trying to get the picture of Diesel's dick and balls covered with spit out of my mind. I didn't have to worry about that I always gutted it (the spit not the dick)! Pm me if you need anything.

Dude...I'm still trying to get that image out of my head. AND IT WAS ME! My "junk" is so massive though, I'm surprised it didn't happen more often. Hell, it took me years to figure out how to sit without my helmet hitting the water.

In all seriousness, WT is right. Get some #'s and be prepared for that shit waiting for you when you get back. I dont advocate litering, but perhaps just this one time you could just chuck that shit out your fucking window.

Bumping Evil's instructions back to the top. All these brothers have brought the gospel, but this post lays out EXACTLY what you need to do. Follow it..... to the letter. All of it. If you are gonna make this quit successful, you have to committ 100% and fight the battle every minute of every day. Freedom is here for the taking, and it is definitely worth the fight. I promise you that.

There will be a battle when you open that car door at the airport today. Be prepared, soldier, and victory can be yours.

Good stuff, I'd say worry about even less - just worry about today - 2 weeks is a long ass time to worry about being quit. Give your word each day and only worry aobut that day. You can do anything for a day right? If not quit hour by hour if needed, I had a few days early on when that was as much as I could take.

I feel you pain brother. I'm in my truck roughly 3 hours a day doing 150 mile round trip to get to work. Fighting traffic was my hardest trigger to overcome and I still battle it. The cinnamon fire jolly ranchers are a nice distraction. I have recently found something new at an organic market called gin gin. They are little ginger candies that are spiced apple.... I have never been a sweets ad candy person but these little things are awesome. I'm at day 25 and just now slowy cutting back my junk food intake. In a pinch for a craving fix I have grabbed a regular Lipton tea bag and rolled it up and tucked it in like a pouch.

Again I'm day 25 and I quit with you today.

You don't want one. Your brain is just telling you that it wants nicotine. If the oral fixaton is pretty bad then use the seeds, though you said they're tearing up your mouth. I know a lot of other people used stuff like jolly ranchers or atomic fireballs. Might be less harsh on your mouth even though its got a lot more sugar. Or if you feel comfortable pick up some fake dip like Smokey Mountain or Jakes Mint Chew and go for a run before putting one in. Exercise is one of the best things you can do to get past the cravings.

The feeling of need for nicotine will subside and get easier to toss to the side as you remain quit. Which will happen once you get past the first few days and the withdrawals are over it'll start to go. Not to say you still won't get nic cravings, but they will start to become fewer and farther between and less intense.

Proud to be quit with you today

Hey nice work man! I just read your intro and I can relate. I have two young sons (4yo and 5mo) as well, and I used to travel a shitload for work (thankfully I don't have to do that much anymore). I remember the days of suffering through business happy hours and dinners and whatnot, just trying to survive until finally I could go back to the hotel room and chew my brains out. And rental cars - after picking it up, it's straight a gas station (even though the rental car is full of gas) to grab a diet coke and an empty coffee cup. I remember once (I think it was in Ogden, UT) I had to drive the rental car all over hell because I couldn't find a gas station that sold Skoal. Never found one so settled for Cope or some other random shit. Ick. And was late to work to boot. Anyway, what a waste of time, effort, money, etc. Not to mention the fact that it was slowly killing me. Glad to be quit with you today (day 15 for me). Let me know if you need anything.

Keep with it man. Take it one day at a time and stay quit. Anything with a strong taste will help. But something you can keep in your mouth longer will help more. When I quit smoking I chewed on liquorice root. I haven't tried it yet for quitting chew just because I haven't made it to town. But it is very strong tasting and you can rip a piece off and chew on it. Plus it is a natural antidepressant and stress supressor. Two things that can come along with quitting. You can get it at health food stores. If you can't stand liqourice ask them about other strong tasting roots to chew on.

One week done. Next one in the bag. What is chew again?

Know I have to stay focused, but feeling better as a whole, I can stand my breath in the AM, Don't have to piss every 30 minutes (chew left me very dehydrated so was constantly drinking water), I don't have 10 full spitters (coke cans) hiding in my office, my oldest and his friends aren't watching me chew any more,,,,all is good.

Big test this weekend again as I no doubt will hang with a couple friends who dip, but I've advised them that I'm on this board and intent to quit for good. Thanks for all the support.

Way to go, but keep your quit close. Hold it think about it, know it. My best friend chews, I have not seen him in 51 days, I am not ready. My dad chews, I have not seen him in 51 days, why temp it? My brother chews and I have not seen him either, why....well cause he is a dick 'jerk'

Anyway, you get my point be careful

Tough day, but made it.  Calling it early as if I head out the door again, I'm done...

9 days in.
Keep kicking ass Nkraft. You will encounter many hurdles on your journey of quit and you are capable of conquering them all. Never forget the grip that nicotine had over you, and never forgot how badly you want to be free. Dont look now bro, but you are winning, 9-0. Now, choose to win again tomorrow, wake up, post roll, keep promise, win again. I quit with you Nkraft. You need anything pm me.

You haven't seen anything. If you want support start posting roll each day, 1st thing. 10 posts and 9 in your intro at day 10 - you don't have anyone here who will know if you need support - get active and quit with KTC. If you haven't read the Welcome Center (http://forum.killthecan.org/index.php?showforum=13) yet take the time to read through it.
