I'm turning 50 in a few days and somehow I've finally collected the resolve to put the can down after 37 years. I dipped constantly all day long. The only times I didn't is when I ate, drank, slept or exercised. It didn't matter if I was sitting in church or pulling 9 G's in an F-16 - I was always dipping. My trigger for taking a dip was breathing.....it was really that pathetic.
I tried a non-traditional approach to quitting. I hired a Shaman for $250 and it actually worked! I fight the nic bitch hourly, but for some reason I'm not fighting the urge (meaning I have absolutely no desire to dip but I'm still having withdrawal symptoms every hour of every day if that makes sense). And I'm positive I'll never dip again. I think the Shaman did some kind of hypnosis or something and made my mental desire to dip disappear but I'm still fighting the physical desire of nicotine. It's really weird because I dipped every hour of every day.
My sleep habits have drastically changed. I used to sleep 8+ hours a day. I now sleep for 5 hours and I wake up at 4 or 5 AM wide awake. For some reason I need less sleep.
I still have issues to address. I don't dip anymore, but I've replaced the dip with either gum or a toothpick. I've gone from constant dipper to constant gum chewer. So there are still unresolved issues with my quit. Like the inability to just relax and be content with nothing in my mouth. I'm hoping that after I reach 100 days my gum chewing will slow down considerably.
It's still hard for me to imagine going fishing or hunting without a dip. 'Remshot' Nicotine has been my closet/most reliable friend for the last 37 years. I will always miss the comfort and solace the dip provided. I look forward to someday when I can go hunting and not think "Damn, a dip would sure be nice right about now".
Thanks for reading and providing any mutual support for my quit.

One of the vets on this site sent me this message the day that I joined. His words seem more appropriate for you than anything I can type. When I got this message I was a little confused.... But in time it all becomes clear.
You can sleep later. Right now just quit. My number will be in a pm to you. Welcome!
--------
Hey man I'm glad you quit and found us. Try posting roll and make your promise every day. Read all you can. I will quit with you but I don't need any weakness in my quit. I will send you my number PM me if you have any questions.
PS. You and the bear DID NOT have good times together. YOU had the good times and the BEAR (nicotine/Tobacco) was that wart on your ass you had to take along. You will now have better times without the shit.

Bro, there is a lot to undue after 37 years, but believe it can and will get better fast, it just don't feel like it. Time slows down for a while.
We don't charge $250.00, that's the good news. We do require one thing that is more important than money though. We require integrity. We post roll daily promising not to use nicotine for the day. We give our word to ourselves, each other and the world that we won't use for the day.
We use accountability, brotherhood, determination and drive.
"I will always miss the comfort and solace the dip provided."
One day, not to far away you will look back at this ^^^ statement and want to kick yourself right in the A$$ for believing it. It will take time, but you will uncover the lies one at a time.
Go to the welcome center at the top left. Read how and why we post roll. Pay particular attention to why. Lets take this quit to the next level. Glad to be quit with you.

Welcome to the best of Your life.
You were a slave to the poison...poison was/is never a friend.
We are all addicts of nicotine. We win One Day at a Time. We quit for Today and only today. ODAAT and NAFAR (one day at a time and never again for any reason) Your life will get better, I promise YOU!
You need less sleep because now oxygen is getting to your organs..especially your brain. (nictotine robs the blood of oxygen).
We were "not" born with the poison in our systems, we were not meant to be slaves to a poison! NAFAR
After 30 years of nicotine abuse (1-2 cans per day 24/7) and 675 days of real freedom I still have a slight oral fixation.
Early in my quit, I used candy, water, gum, seeds, peanuts, more candy, more gum, toothpicks, did I say candy? Today, I use about 6 toothpicks a day. just regular old round toothpicks from Walmart.(cheap)
Bottom line: You do whatever you have to do to "NOT" put the poison in your mouth. Even if it means using a fake product or catshit or fishing worms.
Remember: One problem + nicotine = 2 problems.
Today is a gift, that's why it is called "the present".
Do or Do Not, there is no Try!
The fight for freedom is worth every battle. It is real simple, yet possibly the hardest thing you will ever do in your life.
Real simple: Post roll, keep your word, wake and repeat. Works for me and 40,000 other KTC Quitters.
In your beginning you hold the stick, later you will use autopilot. Cheers.

Don't worry about this. A toothpick or gum won't kill you

These are the lies that nicotine wants you to believe. The longer I stay quit, the more I learn about this fact. I went through a real difficult time in my quit journey because I felt like I "lost a friend". Since then, I have learned that UST is no friend of mine. They want me to be addicted they don't care if they shorten my life in the process. This PISSES me off.
Remember:
1) post roll
2) keep your word
3) get up in the am repeat
Simple, yet difficult. PM me if you need anything. Quit on!

Thanks for the words of encouragement. When does the oral fixation leave? I know it's different for everyone, but I just wondered how long it lasted for you (weeks. months, or years?). Also I never heard the explanation about oxygen absorption and nicotine. That's nice to read as well.

Hey thanks ETXAggie. I guess I'm an East Texas Aggie as well. Class of '86 living in Tyler.

Lot of facts about nicotine are on this site. While your learning to post role, take a look around. Learn your enemy, it will change the game.
When I quit this time I figured it was time I learned what, why, and hows of nicotine.
What a difference that made. I always say,,, Learn your enemy, it knows you.
Nicotine deprives your brain of oxygen. When you stop using your brain begins getting the oxygen you have deprived it. In your case over 37 years. This is why it takes time to recover. It takes 3 to 4 weeks for your brain to repair most of the damage you've done. I repeat, most!
Don't know how long it takes the oral fixation to leave,, 409 days and I still have toothpick a couple times a day. It seems to be less and less. Not really worried about a toothpick or two though. Quit with you.

PM sent airbus.

Make sure you read everything on this forum and buy in 100%. Glad you're quit.
-
Welcome, airbus. You can do this. Quitting with you today. PM me if you need a number or anything.
-
Extaggie hit the nail on the head with all of his points. There is a lot of nicotine talk coming from youÂ…work through the fog and then re-read what you wrote, you won't recognize that person in a short time.
My opinionÂ…the oral fixation is the least of your worries. Gum, seeds, toothpicks, mints, hard candy, or the fake stuff. Whatever it takes to prevent you from putting the nicotine in your mouth. That should be your first priority. We don't wean off nicotine here, we quit cold turkey. But if you need to wean of toothpicks and gum, well, I don't think anyone will give you a hard time about that.
-
Thanks for the words of encouragement. When does the oral fixation leave?
Different for everyone but my experience; I used fake dip daily for 90 days and then it started boring me. Now after 2 years this week I found I need something on a road trip and I pulled out the seeds. For now concentrate on keeping nicotine out of your body, not worrying about anything else. Don't be afraid of the fake dips they can help and aren't addicting.
-
Hi AirbusPilot, I dipped for 33 years so I know where you are coming from. I've been quit 43 days and I promise you that slowly you will change/adjust. I still have craves, but I won't cave...ever! I love the freedom I'm starting to have from the can.
I used the fake stuff (Jakes) for the first 30 days and then stopped. I just didn't want it. I still go thru a pocket full of wintergreen life savers and expect I will for some time.
I can't add anything of value to what the experts already told you, so stay quit and pm me if I can help.

Thanks MB. I'm staying strong as well just sweating out a questionable tooth and a sore esophagus. I have a dental appt and an appt to scope my throat in the next 2 weeks. Hopefully all s well. I'll never dip again. I love being nicotine free. I quit with you brother.

Airbus, take your quit one day at a time. You will be just fine. All you have to do is not use nicotine. Its that easy. Chew sugar free trident or something, thats good for your mouth.
-
Thanks Wintergreen for the support. My prayer before I began was that God would grant me the strength and resolve to see this process through. He has done exactly that for me. My strength and resolve are resolute. I'm done. Never again. NAFAR. My portion of the quit agreement ( the physical addiction) is still an hourly struggle. But my struggle is answered with the strength and resolve to bear through the urge. The urges are still strong but my resolve is stronger! Thanks for helping Jesus. I need it every hour of every day.

Hello Airbus, I am in your July quit group. Just wanted to say hello and offer my support. I have been quit now for 6 days. You are going to be just fine, the start is a little rough, but it is worth it. If you need anything just let me know. I quit with you today brother!

Hell yes!!!!^^^^ ODAAT, YOU GOT THIS^^^^Freedom!

Just wanted to drop you a note to warn you of a possible trap. You would not be the first to get a clean bill of health followed by a trip to the c store. I hope the tests comeback good, be sure not to use that as an ok. The fight can be hard but the reward is worth it. By the way, no tooth picks, candy fake for me anymore. It keeps getting better, it just is hard to tell some days!

Remember free will my friend. Your prayers have gotten you to find this site.
Know this... You and you alone must put in the work. You can pray, hope and think you can do this... But when it hits the fan and the nic B comes a knockin --- you must slay that dragon.
I was you 284 days ago when I stumbled upon KTC. You can do this. You have the strength in you to do it. Quit like you mean it today. You are here for a reason.

airbus,
Good job getting into the dentist yesterday. It's a scary prospect going in after a long absence, and I'm glad the report came back clean. Use that as fuel for your quit and never get complacent. I quit with you today.

Hit HOF and vanish. WTF? I know you have been logging on but you haven't Posted Roll in over 5 days now.
Have you been cured? If so, we want to know.
Did you cave? If so, get your butt back on Roll (Sept)
Are you still quit? So why not post roll?

Shit like this pisses me off and kudos to Raider for calling you out. Trolling the site without posting roll after having hit the HOF is SUSPECT. Either post day 107 with the June Quit Saloon and dispel our suspicions OR get your name on September and man up. In any event Post Roll or go home.

Why the fuck would you log in and lurk around here without posting roll? I'd say because you probably caved and are trying to work up the nuts to own up to it. I hope I'm wrong, but it doesn't look good.

I just checked in with Airbus. He is in the middle of a move to Germany and is busy getting certified on a new jet.
He will be back, and will be posting, and is nic free.
Not making excuses, just offering the words I was given.
