I've been dipping cope winter green and straight the last years. Usually a can a day. Sometimes more. Recently, undiagnosed anxiety has turned me into somewhat of a hypochondriac. I'll think a symptom is indicative of an illness. Then It hit me. It's heartburn, bloating. I think it's because of dip. The ole can never gave me much trouble until this last year. Soreness in my jaws, neck throat and sometimes ears. I currently have what I think is an infection in my gums. The upper side. Started as a canker sore. Now there's almost a straight line of gum that looks like it was cut with a knife. About 3/4" long. It's irritating like a canker sore and is starting to white over like one so I believe it's on its way out. But it looks horrible and thought if I do nothing now, I could develop something like that that's permanent.. or deadly.
So down to the question for those who have quit..
Did you dip at a normal pace until your quit date or did you try to ween down at all?
I'm trying to only dip once a day since this last gum sore. My theory is that lowering the intake of nicotine before the quit date might help absorb the shock of losing a "vital" commodity.
Is the shock of the quit more a psychological hurdle or physical withdrawal?

Here's the deal - no matter how you plan, or what you do, quitting is a sumbitch. I'm only 4 days in after 30+ yrs, and it sucks arse, no doubt about it - but I'm quit TODAY, and I'm free.
Sounds like you have a decision to make today, like the rest of us do - to be free today, or not. For most, planning a quit = not quitting. Best advice I've heard is make a choice to be free today, and you will be able to handle whatever comes One Day At A Time.
Flush that shite today, and join us - If you do, you can post in roll call for the February Future Hall of Fame group, and everyone will support you in any way they can.
Hope to see you in our ranks!

Hi stpsts,
I dipped everyday almost all day til i decided to flush it and go cold turkey. That is the only way, nic patches or gum is just as bad as the dip, and it is NOT quitting.
The first few days is the worst, 72 hours for the nic to flush from our system. But then the mental side comes to play. with staying here, posting roll daily as a promise to not use nic in any form, making contacts here , getting numbers from fellow quitters for text support, you can stay quit.
I could never quit, stopped plenty of times, but always started again, until i came here. I am now 218 days.

My advice is gonna be that canker could have been a whole lot more, don't ever have to take that chance from ever dipping again. Man up, grab your sac and get this shit done! It's damn sure alot harder to quit this shit, than to continue poisoning yourself daily! There's a simple way, quit right this damn second, cold turkey and be the man! I quit with you today my friend!

Stpsts, these people really know what they are talking about. I was very skeptical of the process myself. I finally decided to listen to what they were saying and I flushed everything that I had on October 25th and now I am on my 9th day of being nicotine and tobacco free. The first few days really suck but now I'm feeling great. Now all I have to deal with is the mental fight, which is easier when you have brothers and sister supporting you who have been in the same situation that you are in currently. You will get out of this site and quitting in the matter of how much you put into it. So if you go full hearted into this planning to change who is the master of your life and to take back control this is the place for you. We are all here to help you through this tough time. I quit with you today!
-
Plans don't work. Just quit. Flush the can and suck it up. You will not regret it.
-
Quit! Forget about trying to find excuses to have another dip. I did just that for over 40 years and recognize all the excuses because I used them. I sat with and watched my friend lose most of his lower jaw from dip and he was still dipping till he died, and so was I, and I continued to use after that for 25 years. That just shows how powerful this addiction is. After watching this Hellacious death and my losing teeth and having gum grafts I continued in my addiction. Quit making excuses and quit!!!!
-
Well I haven't officially quit but it's been 19 hrs I've had a dip. (Not to justify it) but it was aa pouch.someone offered me one and without a second thought I grabbed one. I think that's going to be the most difficult part of it, being around friends that dip.
It's been easy not dipping at home. I usually don't any way.
A bit more difficult not to at work were I am right now, if I need to go over paperwork or drive I usually throw a dip in. Other than that I'm often working on medical equipment and you don'twant to stick fingers in your mouth after that lol.
But with my friends, it's gonna be tough
Sure they will be supportive but if all I'd have to do is ask a few times and they'd probably give in. How is it for those who already quit?
-
Why not roll with that 19 hours and just extend into a quit? All you need to know is posted above.

Dude what makes you think your situation is different than any of ours? If you want to quit, do it! We understand your fears, we've all been there. But ultimately each of us decided that we were done and we made the commitment. That's how it starts and then we repeat it every damn day!
-

Right! If you WANT to quit then you WILL.. Ball Up, flush it all and say the word NO and MEAN it. Get your head right and quit, don't TRY don't HOPE, just QUIT.
We all did the same things, but we posted roll every damn day and kept our word our promise to ourselves our brothers and sisters and our families. You Honor your word. Just Do IT.
-
I don't think ya are gettin it. I'm just saying that pouch was the last time I dipped. And I don't think my situation is any different. If anything, easier because your all talking about 30+ years of use when I'm at 6. This should be a cake walk for me compared to what some of you went thru.
I don't think I should have made this thread...
The point was, I was talking to one of my friends dad who I remember smoking like a chimney. He ended up quoting when we were 13 or 14. I asked him how he did it. He told me he stopped many times cold turkey but picked it up again. He said the only way he could handle it was to adjust him self to a decreasing supply nicotine. Over the course of a month and a half, along with increased exorcise he cut his nicotine intake to one cigarette a week. After that, he said the transition to smoke free was seamless. With snuff having a higher concentration of nicotine than cigarettes, one would be led to believe the withdrawal process is more difficult when quitting the dip. So did anyone here try a similar method or just cold turkey??
-
Ok. So you are still 19 (or 20+ by now) hours toward having no nicotine in your system (72 hours roughly). That is damn near a third of the way.
Yet, you want to extend slavery and keep adding toxins to you body through this "decreasing supply" over a month and a half (or more because higher nicotine concentration in dip?).
This is what confuses us.
If you simply roll with a cold turkey that you are already 19'hours into, in a month and a half you will be 45 days free, with your metabolism recovered, your mouth recovering, and life getting better than you now think possible. You note you want to keep making it worse while you conjure more excuses.
What your friend did not have in prior attempts was what KTC offers: brotherhood and accountability. He quit by his lonesome (a very impressive achievement), you don't have to.
You can post roll every day with a bunch of bad ass quitters that are right where you are -- promise yourselves and others that you will not use nicotine for 24 hours. Accountability.
You can exchange digits with these same bad ass quitters and veterans to support you and them through tough moments. Brotherhood.
You can use these tools to be a free man today. Brotherhood + Accountability = Success
Or you can dither, generate the excuses all addicts use (yes we have ALL been there), and roll the dice with receding gums, tooth loss, and cancer... even cardio issues. On your hard earned dime.
The reason for cold turkey is it is your first victory over the excuses of addiction. Dive in and 24,000 quitters here will support you to freedom.

Cold turkey.
All that can be said about your questioning.
Cold turkey it NOW!

Ok, I'll say it this way; over 40+ years of addiction and wanting to quit I tried about every possible way of quitting, including tapering off. In fact when I found this site I'd been mixing my cope with fake dip for about a week (which I had done before). I had a quit plan like so many other times, but finding KTC I started reading and being encouraged to quit cold turkey. I'm sure if I'd kept with my plan and not followed the KTC plan I would never have really quit. Nicotine addiction is so powerful very few addicts can do what your friends dad did. I was so desperate to quit that I actually was considering suicide if I failed again. I loathed everything about my addiction but I just couldn't quit. Well friend I quit for the 1312th day today. That may seem like a very long time to you but to me it's just a start because I know I'm just 1 dip away from being right back where I was April 1, 2012. 1312 days after over 15,000 days of use is nothing. The comments you've received aren't meant to be mean spirited rather we are empathetic, we have a attitude of wanting to be honest and helpful. Others might want to sugar coat quitting but no KTC member will sugar coat this process. It's a BITCH but if we can do it, so can you.

Ok read MY LIPS! COLD TURKEY! You act like you don't want to quit! MAN UP AND QUIT DUDE! It is that simple! We can't do it for you. But we can damn sure help you if you join and let us.
-
I chewed Cope Snuff, a can and sometimes more a day, for the last 20 years!!! I used to think tapering down would help, but it didn't! I recommend COLD TURKEY, as this site also recommends it! If your tapering, then it's easy to get back to your normal schedule of dipping...so if your truly ready to quit, then it's a lot easier to say "fuck you dip, fuck you nic, I'm done"! Today, I'm 35 days quit, so if I can do it, then you can do it! I quit with you today!
-

i get you now man. i dont think your buddys dad did any thing majic by cuttin back. what i think he did majic was dissidin he wasnt gonna smoke agin. we all gotta fite the adickshun day by day. we cant have just one. may be your buddys dad did that the other times he stopped? may be he thot 'just one wont hurt'. thats ware he went wrong.
cuttin back mite make it harder for all i no. think bout this. if i 'reward' my self for goin 3 or 4 hours without dippin with a dip im just reinforsin the adickshun by feedin it... and it makes me feel good. and if it dont make me feel good... well why wood i do that for weeks afore cuttin the nickateen off for good? now insted of 3 or 4 days of reely sucky i got 3 or 4 weeks a mostly sucky.
if you think bout it this way i dont see how any thing but cold turky makes sense.

You can do this STP. Power through today by using seeds, gum, toothpicks, whatever. Drink a ton of water. Most importantly give nicotine the ol 'Finger' today, all damn day. If you need anything, don't be afraid to reach out.

So here I am sitting in chick-fil-a's parkinglot . Finishing up my sandwich and sipping lemonade. Now would be the time I'd throw in a nice juicy wad of copenhagen winter green. Oh man it sounds great right now. I need to find myself a new oral fix. 2 days nic-less and it's not as bad as I expected so far. Today was my first day calling roll. I think I did it right? I'll need a bit to learn navigation of this site.
I'm not experiencing any symptoms of withdrawal other than a break in concentration.. it's strange, I almost feel stoned. And I couldn't tell ya the last time I smoked pot.. been probably 2 or 3 years. Lol
Any way, for the last 5 or so years, I've been dippin cope. Wintergreen and straight. Usually a can a day.
The other day, I noticed a couple white patches on my gums and some thick blood spit out after brushing. Scared the shit out of me. That's what pushed me to quit. So I found your site. The gums are healing, I think it's. Probably just a fungal infection I'll.have looked at if it's not gone in a. Week.
So fellow former cope dippers, what was your replacement fixation? Looking for recommendations
-
For me, I realized that replacement therapy would not be an option because I dipped constantly.
So, I did not switch to something else except at night time. Then I use hard candy or fireballs.
My main thing this time is to not think my old habit but to instead think about everything else.
Change your mind to focus on other things going on your life. If you shift your focus, you will minimize the time you spend thinking about the quit.
This is a mind game.
You will win this one.

I hate the evil bastard Cope as well. With a passion. It can burn in hell.
You've got this quit as long as you want it!
Do you want it? If so, we all are here for you.
I quit with you!

Glad you're here man. Go all in and do this right... get involved and stay involved.
Also... stick to your original intro. You only get one... I'm sure a mod will merge the two for you so you can keep track of your quit journey. Rock on...

Personally, I've tried the fake stuff. Mainly Nip Energy Dip and Grinds. They were both alright, but much rather preferred Grinds because I like coffee.
I'm going onto day 75 now and I haven't touched the fake stuff in probably over a month. Early on the fake stuff can help but try to too depend on it too much.

Most likely bacterial gingivitis, a common infection of the gums. You need to brush after every eating and floss at least once daily until it clears up. The tobacco may not cause the problem but it exacerbates the problem. Dip is an irritant to the gums, and some has sugar in it, so its like feeding the bacteria underneath your gum line 24 hours a day.

Today should be day 3 for you, that's bad ass. These days are not easy to come by. As fo your original question, is there any best method to quitting, or just do it?:
You're in luck! There is a best method.it has worked for me everyday since May 12, 2014. It isn't however a magic pill that you and I were hoping we'd find when we googled some variant of "how to quit dipping." this method i speak of quitting one day at a time. It's accomplished by giving your word and being held accountable to that word. Every single one of us here are nicotine addicts, just like you. What better a place to hold you accountable than a place with hundreds and thousands of nicotine addicts?
The first step in this process however is on you. You must give your word by posting roll. That's your word as a man, given to your brothers in February 2016 quit group, that you will not use nicotine today. you can keep your word for 1 day right? There will be a good number of supporters who post their promise with you as well, to let you know that it is possible and you are not alone in this fight.
I see you posted roll on day 1 a couple days ago, but haven't posted roll since. Well if you are ready for freedom and put any value in your word, this method will lead you to freedom from nicotine. Next step is up to you, it's our job to show you the path, you've gotta be the one who walks it.
Regarding your oral fixation question, there are a number of ways to help tackle craves. These are fake, seeds, gum, beef jerky, hard candy (fireballs). Many people use some or all of these tools while walking the aforementioned path, some don't. I used fake dip (hooch spitfire was my favorite, grinds was decent, Smokey Mountain is probably 2nd most popular) and beef jerky pretty heavy early on. Eventually I just kind of stopped using it except rare occassions and now I havent bothered looking for the couple of cans i know are laying around in 6+ months. I still chew seeds at baseball games sometimes. Some quitters are in the camp that they want to simultaneously break the habit of stuffing chopped brown plants in their mouth, addictive and cancerous, or not. My suggestion is it doesnt hurt to try, but the important thing is getting on roll and taking charge of your quit every day.

Glad to see you quit it cold.....everything else, other "methods" are all bullshit. Complete and utter bullshit. Listen to these vets around here, not a single one is clueless, they know what it is all about.
It does get better man. I never imagined 40 days in but I am here and the first day struggle feels like ancient history. Just need one day, one promise at a time.
Wouldn't hurt to see the dentist for some peace of mind. It is probably nothing but it is always much better to detect a problem early on rather than let it get serious. Good job

I see you logged in but haven't posted roll. You missed yesterday and now it is close to 2:15PM EST. You got to keep posting EDD and early.
