Title: 3 Days In
Post by: Lt461 on August 09, 2015, 11:36:00 AM
I've been chewing this shit for 13 years. I'm on my third day of no chew and this sucks! Like some others, I'm a firefighter and this all started at the fire house years ago. Two of the last three days have been ass kickers to try and quit. I worked through a tough project at the fire house on Friday and then first thing Saturday morning we get called to a structure fire, all of which I made it through WITHOUT chew. I'm not sure how, but I did. Yesterday evening is when it really started to get to me. Sitting around the fire ring with my wife and kids. Cold beer in one hand and no dip. This morning, all I can think about is having a huge dip and getting started on the days projects. But, here I sit, staring and my computer. I heard about this site from a friend this morning and, well, here I am. Here's hoping I can make it till tonight when I go to bed!

Lt my friend, around here we don't hope,we do. Wow how awesome to sit around fire with family and not spitting that nasty shit out in front of them, bravo! You can do this if you really want to. This shits hard but alot easier with help. You're an addict just like the rest of us, really no better than the crack addict on the corner only difference we can function (until cancer comes along ) well enough to keep a job and support our habit. See where this is going? Learn to post roll at the welcome center and let's kick this bitch to the curb! I quit with you today!

The firehouse is a tough place to quit but not an impossibility. Break it down into small componants and go after it. Size up your addiction and develope an action plan that includes the gym, hydration, education, and a daily promise to yourself and the crew. Get in there, no doorway dancers allowed.

Lay off all alcohol for a good month (preferably 50 days) until you have a solid base of quit under your feet. Alcohol is a major trigger for craving and it lowers your inhibitions to stay quit. New quitters say over and over in here that they almost blew their quit over alcohol. Learn from them. I got used to turning to a substitute when craves came on. In my case wintergreen life savers.

Do firefighters have more stress than others...
I know some firefighters that have more self control than others....
Strange how you would risk your OWN life for another......BUT..... Light a match in your own house and inject poison in your own veins.

That my friend is an Addict!

You can't save people's lives when your on chemo.

Be a leader.... Handle your life WITHOUT chemicals.

Grab your gear...Climb the latter ...and save your OWN life.

I'm here. Reading everyday. I've tried to post roll but haven't figured it out yet. I'm on my 5th day without this shit. I'm starting to get the sore mouth and the stomach cramping. It sucks but, you know what, bring it on. I have made it 5 days and I'm not stopping now. I have a wife and 2 boys who need me. I figured out how money a week I'm going to save, then figured out for a month and a year. It pisses me off how much money I have wasted all these years. Not any more, now its time to spend that money on my wife and kids!

It's not easy working in an atmosphere where you can chew whenever you want. It's the same for me in the Air Force. I dread my next deployment because I know the temptations to chew again will be almost unbearable. I've seen many attempt and fail to quit nicotine. In fact, no one seems to quit in the military. I would imagine it's similar with fire fighting since there is probably a lot of down time where the guys use tobacco together. This challenging atmosphere will make it that much more sweet when we finally quit. Let's be the exception and refuse to be slaves to this drug.

The way I look at it if you can't make it here, you'll never make it on your own.

Stepp and Lt. Take this thing ODAAT. Also, you ARE quit. It's not some arbitrary point down the road. You ARE quit, today and only today. Just like me on day 33, or a guy on day 3,333. There is no endpoint. There is just today, and you both ARE quit today.

Try not to worry about how "awful" being quit will be 50 days or 50 years from now. Just chalk up your victories for today. Also, just so we're clear, every single day you do not use nicotine is a HUGE victory. It is not to be trifled with. Your jobs do not benefit from your use of nicotine. Stepp you don't fly planes any more deftly, or shoot any straighter with nicotine in your system. Lt, you don't fight a fire any better or rescue somebody any faster with nicotine in your system.

You guys HAVE to get your head around this concept: Nicotine is bad and it will kill you. It never did anything for you except relieve withdrawal symptoms which increased with your use over the years. If you can grasp that and begin to foster a hatred for this stuff, you have a very good chance at being successful here. If not, you risk being drawn back into the slavery you've worked hard to escape.

Post roll. Quit today. Quit hard today. Quit all damn day. Wake up tomorrow and repeat. Let the rest of the stuff sort itself out.

King

LT - Your roll post was right on target but you need to post in the top half with your group and not at the bottom with supporters.

As for the firehouse, you're no different than plenty of others that are in the same situation and remain quit. There's lots of dudes that come through here and think they have a special situation that will make it tougher for them. Not saying you're one of those guys, merely trying to create a common baseline. We are all addicts. Nicotine crushed all of us for years. It's time to take your life back. Nothing is worth letting it stand in the way. It's pretty easy here. Post your promise. Have a backbone and do whatever it takes to stay quit today. Don't worry about tomorrow until it's today.

Excellent! Get mad at nicotine, and learn to hate it. Bring your rage here and vent, we have all been there.

I'm 8 days in and I'm starting to realize I can stay on task a lot better cause I don't have to spit every few minutes. It hasn't been easy or fun but I feel good about being quit and don't need the shit. I quit with you all today.

Face it all head on and fight man. Like chewie said, we are in the fight of our lives, for our lives! Quit on brother. We are all with you. QLFODAAT!!!
