Hello all, my name is Houston and I am a 20 year old college student from Louisiana. I stumbled across this site early in the evening after deciding to quit and tossing all of my cans, and have been reading the forums going on 3 hours! I have dipped about 2-3 cans a week since I was 15, and finally decided that I am tired of being controlled by nicotine. I have already purchased 10 cans of Bacc-off along with a few other varieties of tobacco alternatives and am excited to be nicotine free! While the thought of quitting is a scary one, by the looks of things I will be in good hands with you all! thank you in advance for your support!

Welcome, Houston. Well done, posting roll.
If you want to see something scary, take a good look at what not quitting looks like. Keep walking toward the life.

I couldn't have said it better! I am on day 11 and looking back on what I just went through and all the effort to get through it helps keep me motivated. It's gonna be tough Houston, you're gonna wanna cave, but you have come to the right place with people that will help!
Caving is never an option, do not give into the Nic Bitch! If you need anything PM people and get numbers to help get you through!

Houston,
You can kick this. All it takes is one simple promise to yourself and the folks on KTC to stay quit today. This has helped me make it though the last 7 seven days. Keep it up and don't be afraid to reach out. Surprisingly, it has taken me 12 years to realize that nicotine and tobacco have absolutely no positive effect on my life or the people around me. For some reason that didn't matter. Just typing that blew my mind. Congrats on making the decision to quit. Nicotine is not worth it.

Keep on reading, my friend. There is a lot of good information. Let it shape you. Let it mold your quit. That's how this place works. To be successful at quitting, we have to change our thinking from what it has always been. That means making a commitment to ourselves, each other, and those around us. The more accountability, the better. My personal favorite tool was (and still is) anger. Read my HOF speech linked below to see what I'm talking about.
Get your plan together. There will be rough times. I gurantee that. I also guarantee you'll fail if you don't have a plan in place ahead of time. Get numbers, contact some quitters, and build a support network.
Glad to have you here.

Thanks Radman, I really appreciate that, and everything you went through on your quit. Day one has been challenging, but I'm going to make it.

houston Great decision. You can do this! I am 69 days quit after 53 years smoking and chewing, and I promise you that you can quit. Reading for many hours frequently, even now, on this site, and getting into chat and getting tough advice as well as laughs has been valuable to me. Drink lots of liquids. Being quit has forme gotten better and better over these 9 weeks. There were some tough moments, but these made me stronger. Deep slow breathing also helps me bypass craves. I wish you well and I am quit with you today.

Thanks for the support guys. anybody have any good tips on alternatives? just want something else to keep my mind off the dip.

Unfortunately Houston nothing is gonna keep your mind off the dip for awhile buddy. This is the time referred to as "The Suck". Remember these first 4 or 5 days and never want to feel this way again. Stay quit and you won't have to. As far as alternatives gum, seeds, jerky, my 2 personal favorites are Mr. Jolly and Mr. Rancher. Some quitters swear by Smoky Mountain herbal, that is a personal choice to make. Do whatever it takes to stay quit for 24 hours come back tomorrow and promise to do the same. Glad your hear need anything PM me.

I have used a mixture of Fireballs and cinnamon gum. I don't want to be reminded of how my old dip tastes, so I went with something that doesn't taste even remotely close.
I tried a can of smokey mountain, helped for a few days and then I had no desire to keep packing a lip of it. It reminded me way too much of dipping the real stuff. I was afraid it would have set me back if I had continued.

Honestly I am not having too many problems thinking about the dip....maybe its because I have only been dipping a few years or maybe the effects just haven't totally hit me yet....I am definitely getting the headaches and the fog but I don't have cravings too bad, maybe its because I really want to be quit haha.

Alternative wise, it kind of depends on what you used.
Smokey Mountain (found at most Walmarts now) is long cut, and many people prefer it because it resembles Skoal long cut. However, I had issues with the Cherry flavor because it was so close to the real stuff. It's other flavors are good, but it tends to be "sticky" and leaves a brown residue all over your mouth and fingers.
Hooch is a fine cut, and resembles fine cut. It's flavors are good (not as realistic as SMS, but close), and the people are awesome there. When I first quit, I made a small order there (which was lost in their processing system). I called after a couple weeks and spoke to them. They apologized profusely and said that they would throw in a couple of free cans. They tripled my order for free.
Those are the 2 most popular.
There's also Grindz (which recently just appeared on the SharkTank and is in MLB clubhouses now). It is made from coffee grounds.
There's quite a few products out there actually.
HERE (http://forum.killthecan.org/index.php?showtopic=6034) is a discussion thread we have talking about different ones we've tried.
One word of advice though: Be careful going to the nic counter looking for these products. If you decide to search them out, I would suggest calling ahead and verifying that they have them there. If you can, order them off the internet to avoid any issues.
Everybody has there own personal tricks as well. I discovered that cherry pits fill that pocket in your lip pretty well, and a brother of mine would dip coffee grounds straight. I've heard that tea bags work great as well.
The point is that you need to do what you need to do to get through today.
You can do this man.

The best thing you can do to keep your mind off of your dip today is to think about your quit today. Your word to others to quit today will keep you quit, long after the fake tobacco stops working for you.

Fireballs, gum, and lots of seeds. I never used the fake stuff because I was scared it would remind me of the real stuff too much like Rob found out. I also pounded coffee the first couple of days. Everybody's different though. The only things that really are sure to work is a set of brass balls and going to bed as soon as you can. You've been overworking your body for 5 years straight by triggering your adrenaline reserves via dip. Time to give it a rest and let it start to heal.

Hey college guys - keep rolling. Now is the time to quit. One day you WILL be 41 yrs old. That's how old I was when I quit last spring. Don't be me - 26 years of poisoning my body and flushing money down the shitter. You guys are showing big balls by quitting now. It's not always easy but you will do it. PM me anytime for anything.

Gentlemen, very sorry for the delay! Was swamped for a few days traveling etc, but am back now. Not a good excuse to not post role, I will try no to let it happen again. Happy to say that I am still quit, and feeling great about it. Gums are a little raw from the 20 or so bags of sunflower seeds over the last 7 days, but its better than cancer, right?

Houston, its time to get some numbers from others in the June quit group. If you cant find the time to post or cannot get hooked up with a pc, text your daily promise to a brother and have them post for you. It is nothing more than accountability. Believe me, you will be glad you did. Wayne
