Title: Gotta Quit
Post by: Murphy on August 05, 2014, 12:56:00 PM
Hello,
My name is Matt Murphy and I have dipped for the past 18 years. I started when I was 13 and as of last week I dipped 4 or 5 cans a week. I quit one time for 10 months until something bad happened in my life and I started back. I am married with 2 kids and one on the way. I gotta do it because of the money, my health, my kids, my wife, and my God. I didn't know how bad it was going to be but it sure is. It was bad when i quit the first time but i think this time is worse. I haven't had a dip in 4 days and i just found this site. It is good to read some of the posts and realize that i can do it. I know so many people that dip but i hardly know anybody who quit. Anyways........

Matt

Matt, please read up and learn how to post roll in the November group. You'll find the support and accountability you need once you commit to being nicotine free for the day.

I hope you are quitting for yourself first and foremost. Your family will always be a beneficiary of your quit, but you need to do this for you. You stopped before for 10 months, now it is time to quit, one day at a time (ODAAT).

Welcome Murphy-
Read all you can on this site. Get involved, stick with the program, post roll everyday and honor your word. Only you can choose to QUIT but this site and the people on it can help. There are some great people in here that are willing to answer questions, give advice and help you to be QUIT every damn day but you have to decide on how bad you want to be QUIT and you have to put the effort in.

The next few days are going to continue to suck but it gets better. Make a commitment to QUIT each day and make it through that one day. Then wake up and do it again.

No matter what you are going through, having cancer would be worse. Read the Kern story on the site here: http://www.killthecan.org//?s=tom+kern+story (http://www.killthecan.org//?s=tom+kern+story)

If you ever think about putting that shit in your mouth again just read that story again. Think about your kids posting about your death because you choose cancer over them.

I quit with you today. You can do this.

I use the fake and it's helpful. Use anything you want as long as it's nicotine free. You are addicted to nicotine, but you probably also have an oral fixation going. QUITTING nicotine is the most important step. Guys use sunflower seeds, gum, fake snuff, coffee grinds, tea bags, hot tamales, mike and ikea, shredded beef jerky, minced up mint leaves, peppermint etc.- some guys drop and do push-ups when they have a crave. ANYTHING BUT NICOTINE.

You got this. One day at a time.

Murphy,

I haven't tried the fake stuff yet b/c I've become too frugal w/ my former tobacco fund that I like to see the money pile up in it but use whatever you can  be sure to share your experiences w/ the fake stuff to all of us. In the meantime, keep on quitting. Fight those urges. I've heard that a lot of people who cave end up going BIG w/ their nicotine habit  the average user tends to almost double his numbers in regards to cans used daily/weekly/monthly or so once they cave so since you share that same story be sure to keep your guard up  dive into KTC.

Welcome to the family.

Take it one day at a time.

Get out of the mind set of worrying about caving.

You don't use nicotine anymore. You don't like death dips. You want to keep your jaw and tongue. You want to see your kids grow up. You don't want to have to tell your wife and kids you choose nicotine and dip over them. Whatever you have to deal with to stay QUIT is better then dealing with cancer.

You can do this- you have to believe you can do it because if you don't believe it you will fail. Don't give us some bullshit about not having good will power- that is a an addict giving themselves an out for a future cave. There is not any valid reason to ever to use nicotine again.

Why do you think we are all on this site? It's not because we are all individuals that are blessed with tremendous will power. We are here because we are addicted to nicotine and we didn't have the will power to say no it but we all know that we don't need it today. And today is what matters.

You can do this Murphy but you have to believe in yourself. Give your word everyday that you will not use nicotine that day, then wake up in the morning and give your word again. Then repeat.

That's right. In Nov. cause that will be your 100 daze...HOF = Hall of Fame...you get to write a speech and have it posted on the site...really cool.
Anyway, I wanted to tell you that you're not alone....I too did not know a soul who quit dipping...until I came here...then after I quit, I started talking with other people and have discovered that "cold turkey" is the absolute best way.
This site saved my life...lots of tools. It can save yours too.

You have 2 things going for you right off the bat 1) you quit cold turkey and 2) you came to KTC. Now, lets get a few things in order. Last time you "quit" for 10 months...you didn't really quit, ultimately you only stopped dipping for 10 months. See, around here, quitting and being quit is a verb. It requires one to be active. The degree of activity varies from quitter to quitter, but generally it's helpful if you journal your quit on this intro page. The one mandatory activity, however, is posting roll. This is the KTC creed and my advice to you is to make it a way of life. Like FM said, we quit one day at a time (ODAAT) and every day we post roll. It's our pledge. Our promise...you're signing your name that you will not use nicotine for that day. In my brief 8 months of quit, I have seen many a caver and one thing 95% have in common is that they stopped posting roll. Being quit requires constant vigilance. Posting roll gives you that - it's makes you give your word, builds accountability, and reminds you every day that you must be active in your quit. The symbolism and meaning of posting roll, for as simple and corny as it may sound, will become the root system from which your quit will be built upon.

Quit on and quit hard.

Get involved in your November group. There are some badass quitters in there. Exchange numbers with some of them and some of the more experienced quitters. It helps to have someone to text/call when you need to vent or get through a craving.

Once you get the hang of posting roll, feel free to join us in the June '14 group as a supporter. Supporting the quit of others strengthens your own.

Glad to have you with us and proud to be quit with you.

Good luck to you my friend. Get some numbers of fellow quitters, keep your roll posted every day, and when urges hit you go to chat or call or text one of your contact. Quitting with you everyday!
