Wally, you're doing great man. One thing that helps me is if I have a strong craving I give myself 10 minutes and start reading HOF speeches and such. Maybe check out some of the online reading. I have never had a craving last 10 minutes you just have to grind thru a couple. THis site will really help you pass them!

The intensity of your craves will lessen.

This is a fact.

The more you read on this site, the more information you take in from your fellow quit brothers and sisters, the more you pay attention to what sets you off, the easier this battle will be.

One Minute at a time --- One Hour at a time --- One day at a time

There is no reason good enough to cave.

Period!!!...just in case you were still operating under the assumption that somewhere out there in the infinite universe there is even the most remote of chances that there were indeed situations in which it is ok to cave...there is not. Nothing, no situation, has EVER been improved through the act of putting that Shit in your mouth. Ever. Period. :)

You are very lucky to have found this site, I'm sure you're aware of this though. Now let's buckle down and get this thing done Wally. Hey! Today I am quit with you!

I quit five days ago and I have a sore throat and mouth sores should I be worried or is it part of the process?

sounds pretty normal. Your mouth is going through changes without having a dip in it all the time. It should heal in a week or so. If it doesn't , go to a doctor or dentist and get it checked out.

Part of the process, but if you are concerned about something then the best possible thing to do is talk to a doc.

I had a sore throat for over a week. Give it a little time, it will pass.

Yeah i thought my mouth would instantly feel great. It didn't. In fact it felt worse for a long time. so it's "normal".

As far as sores, watch them closely. i've always been prevalent to canker sores way before I ever used so I had to evaluate everything in my mouth and determine if it was a canker sore or something else. I used to get alot of leukoplakia sores too, those are usually more whitish and bigger. Just watch them and if they persist like kdip said go to a doctor.

I'm only on day 3 and my mouth is in rough shape. I only have 1 sore right now but my tongue feels raw. Hot coffee is pretty painful in the am.

I think you should go to a dentist and get checked out. I know mouth sores are "normal" but just in case they aren't, early detection is your best defense against cancer. You might want to get your prostate checked, too. Just make sure he checks your mouth first. :)

Use the 2 week rule, most docs won't really pay much attention until you have had something last at least that long. I took a 9 month break from chewing last year (don't ask why I'm only on day 25 now let's just say I get it this time) I can tell you that my mouth was screwed up for a long time, ulcers, sore throat for a bit, sore tongue then after about 2 months all the sudden my gums were killing me for a week or so when I would brush my teeth. Give it 2 weeks, seems normal but pay attention to any ulcers that don't go away after that.

You're doing great, keep up the good work!

Well said, very well said.

It does get better. The craves come after longer periods of time and when they do they are generally of less intensity. And that is after only 45 days. This is the best thing you can do for your life. Love your quit, protect it, be proud of it. You CAN do this. We are all behind you!

i am at day 149 and just went through a nice outbreak of some good sores. I dont know if it is my mouth finally letting go of things or stress related but they passed.

Sores are normal and could be viral related. As long as there is minimal pain and resolve in a few days there is nothing to be worried about. Open lesions with bleeding and puss (you would know if you had this by the taste in your mouth and the smell of your breath) then i would get to see a doctor.

I am not a doctor but i did stay at a Holiday Inn last night. :ph43r:

My mouth hurt like shite until yesterday.....tongue was sore, gums were sore, hurt to brush my tooth. :(

Much much better last night and this morning, no mas sores, brushing is fine, etc.

I haven't seen a dentist in twenty years, will remedy that in about 3 more weeks, I've been too embarrassed to go all these years.

I have. I don't use it a lot. But I do use it. It can be quite effective. You will find that it is not nearly as satisfying, which in a way, is good in rewiring your cranium.

I tried it a while back. I find gum more satisfying than the fake stuff. Smokey Mountain and Hooch were the 2 best that I tried, I would highly recommend just grinding thru the 2 minutes of crave, feels like an eternity but take a look at the clock, it's not.

tried gum...........and thats it.

I have tried it and used it for a few days. It helped in dealing with the craves for the first few days and then I just lost interest in it. I really think it is part of the re-wiring of your brain waves and that proved a big step in my quit. I am still eating seeds like my life depends on it, but I think I can live with a seed addiction. The main thing though is that you do WHATEVER you have to do to keep from using nicotine. So if the fake stuff works, then I would definitely use it. We all know part of this addiction is the oral fixation issue. For my quit, and this is just me, I felt like I could deal with that whenever. The main thing for me was to just not use nicotine in any form.

I was and still am a big fan. I think it helped me tremendously. Having said that, at 304 Days I rarely use it anymore. I have a can or two laying around just in case.

I do, however, use the Oregon Mint Snuff Pouches. Not because I crave, or I need a replacement, just because they are awesome fucking mints and they taste great.

There is a lot of debate on this subject around here, but I think everyone agrees that as long as you are not ingesting nicotine, do whatever it takes man.

I haven't tried the fake dip but I've been using Tea Tree Toothpicks. You can pick them up at any health food store. There's a weird mint flavor and cinnamon. Both are pretty good and have worked great for me.

Like said previously, the important thing is that you're using anything but nicotine and tobacco.

Post by: Greg5280 on January 13, 2011, 06:03:00 PM
I dipped it daily for the first 250 days or so. Just stopped using it one day. Still keep a can in my briefcase, golf bag etc. It is still part of my quit plan.

Use it as you need it is my opinion.

Yeah, it seems to help my crave alot. I can't believe we're all quitting dip/nicotine.
You would think how hard this is we were quitting crack or heroine or something.

I've using Smokey Mountain Straight  Classic off and on throughout me quit when my craves are the strongest and it's worked well so far!

I feel your pain, I have always been embarrassed to go to the dentist because they always looked at the white lesions in my mouth and my receding gumline and gave me the same lecture. They know what they're talking about, though, and I would definitely go to a dentist a few weeks after quitting...I know I will as soon as I get back to the states.

I've had different phases of mouth sores. I'll get a few sores at a certain time then they will all clear up. I'm on day 85 and just got a few more today. Its like the other guys said, its just you mouth healing. I'm sure they will clear up and eventually go away all together.

I has sores off and on for about 200 days. Now the only sores I get are when I bite the shit out of my cheek or tounge which seems to happen more now, not sure why that is.

Make sure to go to the dentist and get a good checkup. I was scared shitless when I went to the dentist for the first time in 15 years. I just knew I was going to be told some bad shit.

Other than them having to scrape on my teeth forever to get the shit off of them I was given a clean bill of health. Xrays and all. Best feeling I had in awhile. I do still have a stain on one of my back teeth they want to bleach out, but I keep it there to remind myself what a dipshit I was.

Relax... take a deep breath and enjoy life. You are no longer stuffing poison in your piehole. Let your body heal...

STAY QUIT

I'm not a doctor or do I want you to take my 2 cents as a reason not to see one. But when many of us Quit we experienced sores in the mouth, sore throat, sore muscles in the neck and jaw......etc. I thnik it's part of the healing process and the chemical changes in your body. But as I said earlier if your concern by all means see a doctor get checked out.......if for nothing else peace of mind. Your doing something great for your health might as well let the doctor put his OK to it. Just my opinion.

What you are experiencing is normal. It doesn't happen to everyone, but it does happen to many. I'm no doctor, but I think the standard response is see if it lasts two weeks. If it does, you should go get it checked out.

Wally is a married father of two who started dipping at age 15. He decided to quit because cancer scares the hell out of him and he lost his father to cancer 6 years ago.

The words of wisdon that Wally326 would like to share with you are “This is my second time being at this point "HOF" and to never let your guard down never go down the road of Nic Death that bitch will continue to lie to you and it only takes one moment of weakness and you're fucked.”

He credits several fellow quitters who will remain unnamed (but you know who you are) with checking in with him via text and that he caught a lot of hell when he came back and answered the 3 questions but he is glad he did. We are glad you did too Wally326. Climb on up, its been a long road to get here to cinci to pick up up. The HoF party continues and each and every one of you 4 badass quitters deserves a standing ovation today.. Congrats!!!
