I'm 52. I've been dipping since I was 14. 38 years. I had a heart cath yesterday. If you don't know what that is, google it. It's not pleasant.
Long story short, my cardiologist told me I had two choices, quit dipping or die of heart disease. Nicotine is really bad for your cardiovascular system, I have come to find out.
I haven't had a dip since 9 am, Thursday Feb 13. It's a hard thing to do, but I don't have a choice.
-
Yes you do have a choice, live or die. Right now you are scared because of the doc, many of us here have been there. Nicotine doesn't give up that easy. I've seen people dip with their jaw half gone. As soon as you are feeling better you will be humping that can again. UNLESS you want to quit, and from what I just read, I don't think you do.
However, this place is the right place if you do WANT to quit. We can help you win, but you have to bring the fighting attitude. So, which is it?

Welcome xct84 to the place you need to be. Well that seems like an easy choice. Quitting dip is the hardest thing I have ever done. But I am almost positive that no one ever died from quitting dip. It sounds like you might if you don't. Read EVERYTHING you can here, learn how and why to post roll call. Pinkish, salmon colored tab at the top of the page. Get quitting! Make some friends and above all post roll every damn day! (EDD)

Mogul is right. Fight for your life. It's up to you.
Follow the KTC plan by the letter. Do not stray one bit, and you will successfully quit. Go post roll in May 2014. Do it now.
I quit with you, one day at a time.

interesting motivational technique.
I've wanted to quit for several years, tried too without any real success. No support to turn to. I think I was looking for the level of motivation. I have it now. I had no idea that nicotine was so bad for the heart. My brother had a heart attack and triple bypass in Sept 2012. He hasn't dipped since. that wasn't enough for me, because my heart was fine.
Now though, I've seen my arteries, I've seen the damage, I know what it means if I don't quit, NOW.

You're part of my quit group. Go post roll if you haven't already, I didn't see you last time I checked. Don't worry about getting it right, just post, we'll help you fix it.
Then check your inbox in the top right hand corner. I'm giving you my phone number. I usually prefer texts because of my work environment. Text me. Even if its to say, I got your number. Keep it there and when you feel week, contact me. Others will give you their number too. Reach out, we'll help you.

You have to scroll down. They are at the bottom.

Joe,
First of all welcome to KTC. I am glad that you found us. You seem to have the drive to quit. The best thing you can do is want it and want it really bad, it sounds as though your Cardiologist woke up that beast. Remember to take things one day at a time, never ever focus on tomorrow or next week, fight hourly at first, then daily. As was pointed out already you need to quit for you, once you do that the rest of your life can bask in the glory of your quit.
Urges and cravings will come and go, rage may become a factor as well. You may notice that your body will change some good, some bad. Read up on that stuff here, those who have walked the trail before you can help guide you through things when you need it.
Now learn how to post roll How to Post Roll (http://forum.killthecan.org/index.php?showtopic=50).
Then join your quit group Pre HOF May 2014 (http://forum.killthecan.org/index.php?showtopic=9408), this will be the month at which you will hit your HOF or 100 days of quit, as long as you have the balls to quit.
Next read the HOM speeches and stories here, learn from the veterans. Look in the site for all kind of information like Spousal Support (http://www.killthecan.org/community/spousal-support/) or What to Expect (http://www.killthecan.org/your-quit/what-to-expect-when-you-quit-dipping/)
Find an alternative to dip Smokeless Alternatives (http://www.killthecan.org/your-quit/smokeless-alternatives/). Find other alternatives (candies, seeds, peanuts, beef jerky...). Also drink lots of water. Bump your intake so you have to stop at every urinal in order to not piss your pants.
Finally, get to know people, exchange phone numbers, make friends and quit.
P.S. All of the underlined words above are links to locations on this site.
Sincerely,
Pinched

index.php?showtopic=50 (http://forum.killthecan.org/index.php?showtopic=50)
That is how you post roll. On the page scroll down to May 2014
Scour the Welcome Center for starters. We have similar dipping history, if i can do this, so can you.

Does the fake snuff help anyone? I would think it would reinforce behavior that we are trying to break free from?

XCT84 - I'm 45 days into my quit after 30 years of dipping a can a day. The nicotine is what you are addicted to, the mouth fixation is just a habit. I found that the fake dip (Smokey Mountain at Walmart) was a good way to get through my worst craves. Others on here believe it reinforces the need for the nicotine.
I don't know what's better but I do know that after 38 years you will have a hard time getting away from the nicotine and if you need the fake stuff to help you do that then use it. I've used 4 cans of smokey mountain in 45 days.
You have found the right place to quit and I Quit with you!
Read here and post roll every day and it will help.

Let's take things one step at a time. How bout you post roll and quit... Then we can worry about fake chew.
I have a good feeling that you are gonna post roll ... So,
My advice is do whatever you have to do to quit today. If you need fake, use it. It is totally safe. Candy, gum, seeds, water, exercise, ice cream, etc. Whatever the hell it takes to keep nicotine out of your pie hole. Everything is on the table. Keeping quit.. That is the priority. Nothing else matters but being quit.
Now let's see you post roll and join us quitters today.

I posted roll a few hours back in the May 2014 group as directed by an earlier post.

I posted to the Roll Call this morning. I think I did it the correct way this time.
Apogeeammo: You're recommendation of the Smokey Mountain just helped me out. I had a major "oh crap I need snuff" moment. Drove to Wally World, no joy, out of Smokey Mountain. After your post last night I looked at the Smoky Mountain website, saw they sold it at HEB here in Texas. Drove to HEB, bought a can . No dip of snuff has ever tasted sweeter than the Smoky Mountain. Took the edge right off.
Thanks Apogeeammo

Yep, you did it right!
I keep some Smokey Mountain with me at all times. It's in my truck, gym bag, golf bag, etc...make sure it (or whatever you use to beat the bitch) is always on hand, makes a big difference!

xct - welcome to the May 14 group!! Glad to have you join us for the best decision of our lives. I'm on day 9 of my quit and am glad to quit with you today.
PS - the smokey mtn is great stuff. I also ordered some of the Hooch snuff from hoochsnuff.com Theirs is a finer cut which I like and they have a whiskey flavor that I prefer. In case you are looking for something different.

72 hours, here's what you need to do.
Go get you a ticket to the Himalaya mountains. There is a mountain there called mount Everest. Go climb that mountain brother. Take a couple oxygen tanks with you, i hear the air is mighty thin up there. I myself have not made the journey, but this is not about me, it's about you. When you get to the top of that mountain take a good look around. Breath in that freedom. Take a good look at the world without the poison running though your veins.
If this trip seems a little to far and out there just step out your front door. Same thing!
Every day for how ever long you have prepared each day around the poison. The poison dictated how each day you would make the sacrifices necessary to get your fix. We weren't meant to live life lead around buy a can of dirt.
Good job! One day at a time and you can have back lot of what the poison has stolen. Never again for any reason and you can keep it. 72 hours is a great start. If you can make it 72 you can damn sure make it 73. Need another number let me know.

I forgot to mention this interesting little tidbit of information.
My daughter is getting married March 15.
If I can make it through all the BS that's gonna go down around the wedding the next four weeks, including dealing with the ex, and I don't slip up, I can handle anything without the need for nicotine.
-
I thank all y'all for your encouraging words and support.

I'm sure you've seen this on the site already "1 problem + nicotine= 2 problems" dealing with the ex isn't made easier with nicotine. I got married last October and remember the stress very well. If you need a venting buddy, let me know

XCT - Welcome aboard, and look forward to continuing to post roll alongside you in Project Mayhem. As far as the upcoming events in your life, both known and unknown, you're already addressing them the right way: bringing them up in a forum so that you don't have to be alone in the battle. No question there's going to be stressful days ahead -- for all of us. Some of it you might be comfortable sharing, some not. But at the risk of chanting the mantra of KTC, we take it One Day At A Time (ODAAT). Get through today's quit -- that's not much to ask, is it? Hell, you've already proven to yourself and everyone watching that you can do it several days in a row, so what's one more day? Simple: it's your life. You can do this, and we've got your back, especially in Mayhem.
-
XCT,
Sorry to hear that you lost your job. Sometimes one door closes and another one opens.
Just remember 1 problem + nicotine = 2 problems.
You don't need that nic bitch in your life, ever!
PM me if you want digits.
Quit alongside you EDD!

I'm on Day 18 today. For the last four or five days my sweet tooth has been in overdrive. I'm craving ice cream, chocolate, cookies... like a pregnant woman.. has anyone else encountered this ?

Hi there. I had HUGE sugar cravings. Sugar is NOT my friend so the best thing I could think of was to cut up some oranges, limes, lemons etc and make a giant pitcher of ice water. Try it...good luck!

If you have a craving other than NIC... roll with it. Nothing wrong with a little ice cream, chocolate or cookies. You aren't going to want it forever.
Just keep dip out of your face. Everything else is OK for now.
