I've been hooked on nicotine since high school when I started smoking. I quit 5 years later replacing camels for skoal. 12 years later and here I am today.

I go through about 2-3 cans of dip a week. Have made numerous attempts to quit before and ultimately failed. The longest I stayed off was 30 days. Dip has been such a routine part of my life. I crave it after eating, my morning ride to work, at the gym, whenever I am doing anything outside, when I am bored at home, watching TV. It is just instinctive to reach for the can.

I want to quit for obvious reasons. It is gross. I'm tired of finding bottles to spit in. My wife hates it. I am tired of thinking about it at inconvenient times. Health reasons above all else.

So with that said, I thought about why my past strategies to quit didn't work out. I would find any excuse to start again, stress and the need to feel "normal". I need to be more accountable and remind myself that I am redefining what normal is. I've used patches in my past attempts to quit. In fact I still have some left over. Yesterday I put on a 21mg patch and only had 3 dips. I put another 21mg patch today and plan to not have any dips (I don't own a can at the moment). Tomorrow I plan on quitting the patch all together and rid myself of nicotine completely. I am craving a dip right now as I type this :(

My will power is high right now. I am leery about what that will be like once I take the patch off tomorrow. I know the cravings will come and chip away at my will power repeatedly. I have to mentally prepare myself before the cravings happen, hence why tried to identify them in the previous paragraph.

Will post my first roll call tomorrow. I WILL get through today without a dip but with the crutch of a patch.

You are addicted to nicotine. You need to quit putting it into your body (ie: the patch)

Don't quit tomorrow. Tomorrow never comes. Rip off the patch now. Flush all your nic and get this quit started.

Sort of like putting your foot in the pool instead of just jumping in. Should I really just jump in?

Patch = not Quit.

Tear it off and get to Quitting.

There is only ONE method here, only one technique. That is becuase HERE there is only one PROVEN method to Quit.

Post roll EVERY day.

Keep your WORD.

Repeat.

There is no alternative, and there is no discussion past it. Everything else is just noise.

Seriously?

You don't need coddled.
You want to quit. That's why you're here. No matter what "program" of gradual lessening of nicotine, it's all the same at some point... Cold turkey. At some point you go from using to not using. Stop prolonging your pain... Do it now. Tomorrow always breeds another tomorrow. Be bigger than your addict craving. We'll quit with you today.

I just posted roll. I wasn't sure since I started the day off with the patch on. I'm focused on getting through the day. At the same time thinking about how the rest of the week will be a son of a bitch. As I type this, motivation is high, will power is high. I'm not naive enough to think it will stay that way. Will continue to post roll and take it one day at a time. It will get easier eventually .... right?

Today is the day you quit. Your strength comes from that roll post you just did. It locks you in to no nicotine for the rest of today. Today us your day 1. Congrats.

It's gonna get shitty but you can get through it. We all did.

Drink tons of water. Get gum sunflower seeds fireballs etc to help with cravings.

In about 4 days you will start feeling better. Then it's all mind games. YOu post roll tomorrow morning first thing. If you are a man if honor that roll post will keep you quit.

One day at a time. It will get better. Way better. I promise.

It will get shitty as Griz said. Post Roll daily, first thing. The next few days will be hard but us bad-ass quitters are here for ya. You can and will succeed. Today is important. Listen to all these guys. They know what they are talking about. I'm day 6 and loving the hell out of it.

OK dude, you're not going to like me but this is not a personality contest so I don't really give a fuck.

You have made the first step to quit but you are already defeated. Lunch crave, yep it's coming, shit crave, shower crave, morning coffee crave, start the truck crave, get off work crave, proud of yourself congratulatory crave, they are all there. Mentally prepare yourself JUST FUCKING ONE TIME.

Say it, say: IM QUIT, THE DECISION IS MADE AND THERE IS NO GOING BACK. NAFAR.

Personally, I'm not convinced you want to quit. You are just testing the waters to make sure you can go a day without it. Next thing you know you will be handing over $5.50 to Habib at the 7/11 and packing your lip full of cancer. Yeah, you think I'm wrong? Think I'm a dick for calling you out?

PROVE ME WRONG and I will be quit with you. I believe you can quit today so today I'm quit with ya. See ya in the morning sunshine.

I appreciate all the support. I got a ton of PMs from people wanting to reach out. I am great full for the help.

Day 1 on the books. Posted roll for day 2. One day at a time. Body still instinctively reaches for a can only to find an empty pocket.

Awesome stuff...I remember reaching for the phantom can especially after a meal. You will be amazed how your mind will adjust, but also just how ingrained this addiction really is/was in everything you do. It was those realizations, especially in the first 10 to 20 days that led to the eventual epiphany of "Holy shit, I really am an addict and this shit has me by the balls". Keep making your promise and take it one day at a time, continue to document your experience here so you can remember just how screwed up this addiction really is. Never go back.

In the past I have tried fake dip when attempting to quit. The ones I tried weren't very good. I've been a grizzly wintergreen guy the last 5 years. What is everyone's opinion on this? Did you use it to help your quit? There is no nicotine but its a pacifier just like chewing gum or sunflower seeds. One could argue that it may trigger worse craves since its designed to emulate the real thing. I am kin of on the fence with this and was considering trying some different brands of the fake stuff.

Opinions vary, but the only thing that matters is that this is a nic free group. Ultimately, you can pack dirty sweat socks in your lip if they so not contain nicotine. Quit = Nicotine Free. Ultimately do what works for you. I chose not to use fake chew, but chewed the hell out of Trident gum and sunflower seeds. My work buddies were calling me Piranha Boy because I was chomping Trident so much the first 30 days:-) Others use the fake chew for the first few weeks, months and further on. Do whatever it takes for you to keep nicotine out of your system.

Keep doing what your doing, documenting your quit here. Think about your first weekend. What might be your triggers, a smoky bar? or whatever? Make contacts in your group, be prepared to hop into live chat in a moment of weakness, keep your "fake", seeds, non-nic gum handy! ODAAT!

What he said

Have a plan ready. The weekend is full of triggers. Be honest with your friends. Tell them you are quit and need support. If neccesary stay home and nail 2x4s to the doors.

Protect your quit no matter what

Using the fake stuff is NOT cheating. If it works, keep using it.

Do what you must to keep the poison out. While quitting one of the most addictive drugs known to man cheating is allowed and excepted. I used it for the first 40 and tossed it with no problem. Keep your focus on keeping the real stuff out. Quit with you today.
