Title: Day 1, again
Post by: co5volunteer on May 24, 2014, 11:03:00 AM
Hey everone,

I'm only 25 years old, started when I joined the volunteer fire department at 18. Through that time I have seen some of the guys I ran with encounter issues from receding gum lines and tooth decay to mouth cancer. I've gotten lucky, but decided I don't want to risk it anymore. I've tried quitting many times, but haven't been strong enough to just say no. I was doing good for the past few days, but unfortunately had a slip yesterday afternoon. Yesterday evening I decided I was done for good. Initially my plan was to finish off the can and that was it, but after stumbling upon this site, whatever is left will be discarded today. I no longer want to be a slave to Skoal. Unfortunately, the firehouse will still be the hardest trigger to overcome.

Discard that shit now. Don't worry about triggers and firehouses. Just be quit. You can do this.

Welcome and congratulations on a good decision.
You will find that life is a trigger at first but once you decide that you are truly quit...triggers don't matter. You need to be prepared for them but you no longer chew....so don't.
Go to the welcome center and read. Learn to post roll and do it every day. That is our promise not to use nic for the day. That's all you need to worry about is the day. Or, even the moment. You can do anything for a few minutes right? Well, the cravings will pass in a few minutes so grit your teeth and bear down. Breath deep, drink water, stay busy.
Remember that the craves will pass whether you use nicotine or not. But if you use, they will never get better.
A point of order, did you throw your chew away where you cannot retrieve it? The toilet is the best place. Our addicted minds will dig that shit out of the trash if were not careful.
Read all you can on this site because knowledge and hatred of the nic whore is what will fuel your quit in the short term.
Welcome to the good life. Unfortunately, it will suck for a while, but anything worth having requires some sacrifice. Being quit is definitely worth having.
PM me if you need help.

Thank you! I'm at work so I haven't had a chance to throw the rest away, but it will be the first thing I do when I get home. I'm making some all aroundl lifestyle changes, and this is one of them. Hoping to turn a craving into something positive, like a quick workout or going for a run.

Welcome. There is never a better time than today to be quit. It's all we can control anyway.

If you haven't already, head on over to the August group and post your day one, I think you will find the common goal of quiting will make it easier to quit, and many will be ready to offer support. We have all been pretty much where you are today.

Get yourself some fake chew or gum or whatever will help with the cravings, you also should consider laying off the alcohol, a couple drinks can ruin a new quit pretty quick.

You can do this.

Being awake was my hardest trigger to overcome. NO MORE EXCUSES!!!

One day at a time and you can have back a lot of what the poison has stolen. Never again for any reason and you can keep it.

How bad do you want it? If you want it bad enough it's well worth it!

There comes a time in life when we must all decide to honor ourselves and be true to us or to keep pleasing others. I've been there, be true to you and stand up for what you believe in.

It wasn't my biggest trigger, but it was a big one. The fake stuff was amazingly effective at both killing a crave and for filling the gap when I am just chilling at the station. I keep a can of the fake stuff in my bunkers, so if we're at a wreck/wildland/LZ call then I can pop in a fake and beat the crave.

How long have you been with the dept?

Identifying and knowing your triggers is a HUGE first step. Once you identify them, you can fight them.

You're well on your way.

Most of us quitters come to a realization that everything was a trigger, but having a plan for when you are going into a tough spot is key. Keep your phone loaded and ready and reach out if you need to. PM me if you need a #.

Foresight is a key tool for a young quitter. You gotta start looking at your life differently. Look for the upcoming event you know are going to be a test and prepare yourself.

You're not here "by accident".
It is Your time to "be quit".
Flush it all. Fuck the poison. We were not born with it in our mouth, period
little secret: Life is a trigger! KTC is the site with the brotherhood and tools to defeat ALL triggers ODAAT (one day at a time).
If you'll:
Post roll when your feet hit the floor
Keep your word all day (your word is good, right?)
Make it to bed, wake and repeat.
Then You too young quitter can/will "be quit" Today.
If my old ass can do this, I know that YOU can too!!
Welcome to the best of Your life.
