Title: College Student ready to kick the tin!
Post by: tmr5215 on February 18, 2013, 12:25:00 PM
Hello all!

My name's Tim, I'm currently a junior at Penn State. However, I am down in Florida completing a co-op for the semester.

I've struggled with quitting multiple times, about 4 now to be exact and going for as long as 90 days once. I have been hooked on Grizzley wintergreen pouches for the past 4 years and I am ready to quit the habit. I've been on this site many times before for help and advice, however, I have never actually posted roll or been able to navigate the boards. (If someone could help me out that would be great.)

The thing I have learned about dip over the years is that we all dip to relieve anxiety or stress. In a college students life thats usually for finals week, girls or just being sick of all the BS. There's always another reason to keep going such as I have 3 exams this week, had a rough weekend with a girl or just down right complacency.

But the sick cynical thing about dip is that we may dip to relieve our short-term worries, but at the end of the day dip is going to make all of our long-term stresses 100000x worse. (i.e. worrying about grades turns into worrying about your health)

I'm sick and tired of being controlled by the tin. I'm ready to quit now for once and for all! I can't wait to meet all of you and thank you all in advance for your support in my journey.

You learned Wrong.

Dip doesn't help with anxiety or stress. The relief you feel is actually nothing more than relieving the nicotine withdrawl symptoms. Here is how it works in a nut shell.

1. Stress/anxiety cause your body to produce cortisol and adrenaline etc

2. These reduce the amount of nicotine in your blood stream.

3. The sudden drop in nicotine levels trigger withdrawl symptoms. You become more anxious, irritated, etc.

4. You take a dip and feel the relief from withdrawl

5. You mistake the relief from withdrawl for relief from the actual cause of anxiety or stress.

Nicotine is not a crutch, it is an anchor. Nicotine doesn't fill the void, it created it. Having a chew doesn't fix anything or solve any problems, it doesn't make you smarter, better looking, less stressed, or smoother with the ladies. It will not fix a broken heart or heal a hurt. The only thing nicotine is good for is keeping you addicted to nicotine.

Here is a quote and link from whyquit, an anti smoking site but a great resource for nicotine education. Read up.

"Think about it. Once we finished tanking-up with a new supply of nicotine and had satisfied our dependency, the car's tire was still flat, or the bad news was still bad. One of the greatest recovery gifts of all is an amazing sense of calm during crisis, as we're no longer adding nicotine withdrawal atop every stressful event."

What Skoal Monster said........ x 2.

Getting my head wrapped around that concept was key to staying quit. We are addicts. Nicotine is our drug. That will never change. We can never have "just one" again. You probably have already proven that, you just haven't completely accepted the concept yet.

Tsk tsk tsk. 'finger point' 'finger point' You've been brainwashed my friend.

So what about the people at college who don't dip, are they SUPER stressed all the time? I mean surely they have exams too, and girl troubles. How do they deal with all that without dipping? They must be magic gypsies or something.

Nope. As SM laid out, nicotine does not fill any voids it creates them. You THINK you need the dip to relieve stress, but really you need it because you're flat out addicted to it. You use it to ease the withdraw pangs. You're an addict dude, time to face that fact and get on to quitting.

Exams and girls...dude I'd give my left nut to go back to college and only have the stress of college and exams. The "real world" is much tougher, trust me.

Once you realize you aren't giving up anything pleasurable, or anything that makes your life "easier", the better off you will be.

Life is tough dude, whether you have a lip full of cancerous weeds in or not. It doesn't change one Damn thing.

Time to grow up bud, and quit. We got the program here to help you. Use us.

Ok Tim, Day 2 right? lets do this

You only have to do one thing today. Thats stay quit. It doesn't matter if you miss class, piss off your girlfriend, or even get anything done. The only thing you need to accomplish TODAY is to stay quit.

Keep your blood sugar up and steady- sweet juice will do that if you sip it.

Do not skip meals

Exercise- it is a proven crave killer

Watch the coffee/ caffiene intake- reduce what your used to.

TODAY is the only day that matters. You don't have to quit forever, just today. Any fool can quit for a day. Even you.

Day 2 is coming along. I'm actually down in Florida working for the semester so sitting around for 8 hours at a desk sucks thinking about dip pretty much the whole time. This is normally around the time when I would unwind with a lip after work, but I am staying focused about being dip free.

I hate the fog but I have been through it before so I know what I am in for.

Thanks for the support.

Hey Tim, welcome to the site! I'm a pretty recent quitter (day 45) and I can tell you that the "One day at a time" mentality really does make a difference in your quit. When you hit a rough patch, the 'addict' voice in your head will tell you to give in because "you can't quit forever, no way, why even try, you might as well have a chew now". Tell that voice to F*CK OFF. You dont have to quit forever, you're not gonna live nearly that long. Just quit for today. Do whatever you have to do to not put nicotine in your body today. I use hard candy, sunflower seeds, gum (not nicotine!), fake chew (BACC OFF and Smokey Mtn), and lots of exercise. Whatever it takes. Find what works for you, and do it. ANYTHING is better than going back, even if it means you pack on some weight temporarily, due to eating more.

Glad you're here, Tim, if I can help in any way, just shoot me a PM.

Rick

Thanks for the support guys.

Had a long day today and wasn't able to get to my normal workout routine. I have a big meeting tomorow with my boss to discuss my projects and where I want to go for the rest of the semester. The meetings over lunch and man all I can think about is how my mind is going to be in a daze the entire time.

I was looking through some clothes tonight in a suitcase I had packed from this past weekend. I thought I had cleaned out all old dip but I noticed inside an almost full tin of my favorite Grizzly Wintergreen pouches. Man, they were still moist and everything. Pretty much calling my name.

I wanted nothing more to throw in that chew and delay the fog for just a few more days. But instead, I threw them fuckers right down the toilet. Each and every one of them. I'm tired of not being in control of my life and it's about time I take it back.

Goodnight all and thanks for the support, I'm ready for day 3 tomorow!!

Tmr. You're a smart guy with some free time. Pick up a book by Alan Carr called "The easy Way to Quit Smoking".

The Skoal Monster recommended it to me, and it was a real eye opener. Helped my quit tremendously.

Its an easy read and although it talks about quitting cigs its all about nicotine and how it works...and doesn't work.

Its good shit.

Its not 50 Shades of Grey. Sorry.

The quit is strong in this one. If that happened to me on day 3, my quit may have ended right there. Keep up the great work man. I think we are gonna see this one at the HOF and beyond.

You're basically saying the only reason you didn't cave was because you were not challenged like this. Bullshit. Your quit is strong. If you were posting roll on day 3, you would have thrown them fuckers away too.

Of course, if you were flying solo days 1-3, then you're probably right.

The quit is strong in this one. If that happened to me on day 3, my quit may have ended right there. Keep up the great work man. I think we are gonna see this one at the HOF and beyond.
Awesome job brother, that would have been a fucked up surprise to find no doubt. Excellent job keeping your eye on the big prize, your freedom from the nic bitch and ultimately your life. Proud to be quit with you today and welcome to the May quit group. PM me if you need anything

Smokey, you are sharp as a tack my friend. Read my intro!! I found KTC on day 4. :) There is no telling what I would have done or not done on day 3. I will tell you what I know now...... each +1 I pile up, the stronger my quit becomes. The same will be true for TMR.

The important thing to remember is, once you've put your name on that roll the option of caving is gone!! Every +1 for each one of us increases our strength, individually and as a group.

Thanks for the bode of confidence man, I'm hanging in there and I can feel it starting to get better already.

I'm really enjoying the book btw. It does shit on a lot of preconceived notions regarding dip and some of the things it has said have been spot on.

I'm gonna preface this post by you guys are going to think I am a pussy, but to be honest I don't really care because I am having a shitty day and need to vent. Hey and maybe this will give some of you old heads some nastalgia from your college days. (only kidding with you guys)

Ohh and I am on Day 13 and still nic free.

Alright for those of you who have not read my introduction, I am 20 years old and a college student but working a co-op for the semester. It was a big choice of mine to take a semester off being that a couple of my good friends were studying abroad, I'm still not 21 while most everyone else is, and this girl who I have been on and off with for the past 3 years was studying abroad.

So fast forward to today and there is not a god damn thing for a 20 year old to do when he is not in a college town. This girl who I have been on and off with for the past 3 years I mean spending basically every weekend (nights mostly if your catching my drift) together visiting each other at home all that bullshit and talking everyday type of college thing. Well she left two weeks ago and I have no way to talk to her for 6 months. And today I saw some pictures online of her in a skimpy outfit out at a club fucked up with dudes all around. And man do I get fucking jealous!!

Needless to say I cannot stop thinking about her fucking some pussy bitch over there with a faggot ass accent. And thus, I cannot stop thinking about how much I want a fucking lip. And GODMANIT I am so bored.

First off...pull yourself together. You don't know for sure she is getting her sausage wallet filled. Email her and ask her if you want.

Popping in a dip ain't gonna make that picture go away, or change What the bitch is or isn't doing . And it sure as hell isn't going to cure your boredom.

Boredom is a frame of mind. If you pop in a dip your brain doesn't say "Im dipping, I'm dipping". You just THINK it will. Truth is you would still be bored...just with a lip full of cancerous shit in your lip.

The real deal is when you are addicted to nicotine and are not chewing, their is something to miss. If you have something to keep your mind busy that's not stressful, you can go a long time without nic. But when you're bored there's nothing to take your mind off it, so you would stuff your lip full of crap. If you were not quitting, dipping would be subconscious. If you were full blown using again, you wouldn't even be able to remember all the dips you had in a day, just maybe a few. Like the first one or one after you ate.

Nic indirectly increases boredom because it makes you feel run down or lethargic. So instead of doing something energetic you would be laying around all lazy spitting into a bottle relieving your withdrawal pangs. You have been brainwashed into thinking dipping relieves boredom, when intact it is one of the most boring and tedious things you can fucking do.

Go for a fucking jog. Find a fucking gym and throw some weights around, Read a book, play video games, beat off.

Not sure where the hell you are but find some hole in the wall bar and try and hook up with some skank. Even a fat one if you must. You're young, you're not married, go out and have some fun. Don't sit around moping and whatever you do...

KEEP THAT SHIT OUT YOU LIP.

IT FILLS NO VOIDS, IT ONLY CREATES THEM. DO NOT GIVE IT SO MUCH POWER!!! ITS POSION IN A CAN. NOTHING MORE!!! STAY QUIT!!!!!!

Grats on 13 days quit and making the decision to quit while you are still young.

Exercise, can be done anywhere by anyone (almost) even old farts like me can do it.

Take up a new hobby and go research it. Or just research something you think you might be interested in .Either on the internet or at a local library, get yourself out of your normal routine.

Check out volunteer opportunities in your area.

There are always things you can do, even if they are not the most ideal of things you want to try and keep your mind from being idle. Besides drinking an idle mind has got to be the worst thing possible for a quit.

Stay strong, you can do this. PM me if you need another number.

Diesel thank you for adding the term "sausage wallet" to my vocabulary, you know your not half bad for a michigan fan after all. (I go to PSU)

I actually have been doing P90x so that has helped alot relieving my cravings. It just sucks being 20 having a real-job for the semester when I know all of my friends are back at school having a blast.

Thanks for speaking the truth and helping me snap out of it.

Listen to everything Diesel says, including his extensive, um, vocabulary. I expect something new from him every time he posts. No pressure, Diesel. :D

As for you, welcome and please do this while you are young, have healthy gums, don't hate yourself fifteen years from now, and have no fears of getting fucking cancer. Let us live vicariously through someone much, much smarter than the rest of us. Quit now and stay quit. Please. I don't know you and I'm not sure I even like you yet, but I want you to stay quit. Stay strong, you jealous son of a bitch. :D

Not to get off topic or off the real topic, sausage wallet is a new one I've never heard before either. I actually had a younger gal around 23-26 refer to her own CT as "Beef Curtains". WTF sounds sexy about that??? STAY QUIT FOR SURE.

Now you might be pissed at me for bitching earlier without telling you this, but I am actually leaving for a Cancun Spring Break trip tomorrow with friends from school.

So yes, I do hopefully plan to explore some sausage wallets and beef curtains while i'm over there. But more importantly, I plan to STAY QUIT.

Thanks to all for your support.

Thats the plan, man! Keep my meat stick as active as possible and hopefully, I will have some good stories for the forum admidst my return.

On a more serious note though, I have no idea how I am going to post roll when I am down there because I likely wont have access to internet if anyone has any ideas...

Got any numbers from guys in June quit group? If not, get them. You can text them each day to post roll for you (unless "Spring Break Skank #7" won't leave you lap, and for that, I hate you exponentially.) If you need mine or somebody else's numbers to post roll for you, PM us and let us know. We will absolutely do it for you as long you stay quit.

I am really growing to despise you, by the way. And I've only known you a few hours.

PS. If you cave, I won't be joking and the real heavy-hitters on this site will make you feel like you ate your own shit. In other words, don't drink too much in Cancun (or at all.) It's almost a guaranteed cave. Otherwise, have a fucking blast and please let us know if we can help post for you. And when you come back, come armed with pictures!!

Went to Cancun this summer. You can't find dip down there at all, so unless one of your buddies brings it you should be good.

Funnest week of my life hands down, no words really to describe it. One of my buddies down there is addicted to dip and brought it with him. I couldn't help but think those nights he was "too tired to go out" or had to "go grab more sun tan lotion" were because of the dip. I have never been more happy to be dip free!

I quit with you all today my brothers!

Alright, so here I am more than a year later. I grew complacent with my quit after hitting the 100 club with the May group from last year. About 30 days after hitting the 100 club (and after stopping posting roll), I caved. It was easy at that point, what harm would one more dip do? I had already been quit for "so long." I decided I would have just one more dip. I was 20 years old and quite honestly figured it was just one dip. About a year later, that was the biggest mistake I have made of my life to this day. Go ahead, call me a pussy all you want and I agree because I was/am. I owe Diesal and Dlee a special apology as they were there for me every step of the way and I have let them both down. I can say now, I am ready to kick the tin once and for good. I know it will not be easy and I also know that I cannot do it without you. I'm now 21, a month away from graduation and dip has once again consumed my life. I'm not willing to wait till graduation, until I get married, until I have kids etc. to quit. I'm ready at this moment. I know words cannot repair what I have done, but I promise to you all that I will prove it to you all through my actions.

Answer the 3 questions.
1. What happened?
2. Why did it happen?
3. What are you gonna do different this time?

At your age i've read that only about 3% percent quit and stay quit. I choose to believe that's good news because that means you can do it.

I'm good friends with quite a few members in your old group. They have been instrumental in getting me to 407 days. They would have dropped anything to help you get that far also. You would be around 450 days quit right now.

You owe your last group and yourself those answers. Lets make it count this time my friend. Life is to precious to give it to the poison.

Gee...Never heard that story before. Just like most young guys who roll through here , you don't listen. If you did you would have built an accountability network and know that "just one" was the ultimate gateway back to addiction.

You don't owe my an apology, you owe yourself one. And if you find Dlee let me know. He fell of the earth about 7 months ago. Probably knuckles deep into a can right now.

Maybe you two belong together, double teaming a can of cancer.

Good luck on your second attempt.

Like has been said before over, and over again. Guys who leave are MUCH more likely to go back to sucking on cancer weed.

Don't fuck this up again and waste (more of) anyone's time on you.

I don't know what I was reading,, you were in my group. It's early, you'll have to excuse me. You owe me and everyone else in our group that's left some answers my friend.

You would be on day 403 right now. The 4th floor is so much better then where your sitting. Your old group is down to under 20 now, don't know where everyone went, but there is a few real quitters holding strong. People that took there lives back and meant business.

We would have loved to have you still posting with us, but you felt that you no longer needed us or ktc to stay quit. I guess DAY 1 blows that all to hell!!!

Maybe I missed it yesterday, it may be time for me some new spectacles. My vision has been slipping. I couldn't find where you posted roll or your answers yesterday. No roll post today either, but yet you logged on in the middle of the night like some kinda peeping tom.

Maybe next time. A few more years of slavery may change your mind or worse.
