Hello,
I resolved to quit dipping after 24 years. Cope straight has been my mainstay for the past couple years, mixed in with skoal and wolf. The worst time for me as far as sheer volume, 1 1/2 to 2 cans a day was original Copenhagen when I was in the army.
My motivation for quitting is my son who is 8 months old. Daddy needed to quit before my boy turned one. Quitting for my wife is important also, but he is my main motivation. My wife actually found this website and messaged me about it today. She has a harder time understanding what it's like to quit since she doesn't smoke or have any addictions.
I got through the first 10 days using smoky mountain which I had used a couple years ago when I had quit before, but then subsequently relapsed after about 6 months. So far it's been a pain in the ass, which I'm sure everyone is aware haha. The hardest part for me to deal with are the oral fixation cravings, I eat and eat. Probably gained around 10-15 lbs so far even though I try to hike daily with my son and weightlift on a regular basis.
Because I have relapsed before with a non-nicotine snuff, I decided that I wanted to use those as little as possible to get past the cravings. So I'll be reading up posts here for tips and tricks on cutting down on eating to satisfy the cravings and other alternatives that may help.
Thanks for this website and forum

You gotta do this for you man...vocab is strangely important while quitting...yes you do want to quit for your son...but maybe a better thing to say is i want to quit so i can see my son graduate high school...or i want to quit so (insert). I tried quitting for others in the past and it just doesn't work man...the first time your wife really pisses you off, it will be too easy to grab the can and blame it on her (been there). Or the first time your son has a bad day and it seems to hard to bear, you'll grab the can...(done that). This has to be about you bro.
That is my advice...quit on brother...

Where to begin?
1) You never “quit” before, you paused or stopped.
2) You have to quit for you, first and foremost. We are addicts. We do the worst things imaginable to feed our addictions. We lie and steal from those closest to us to satisfy our drug needs. You will not think twice about doing this to your son.
If you want to quit you can. We all have. If you quit on 5/17/13 then you should be posting roll in August 2013 (http://forum.killthecan.org/index.php?showtopic=8141). Every quitter in there is going through the same things you are. Get to know them and post roll every day, first thing in the morning, and you will have them as supporters.
Click here -- Welcome Center (http://forum.killthecan.org/index.php?showforum=13) to learn about the site. Play special attention to the parts on Posting Roll, the whys and hows. That is the backbone of what we do. Post roll. Make your promise. Keep your word. Repeat tomorrow.

Welcome to the site Mike. Just have to echo what the other two said: ultimately you need to quit for you. Fight for your freedom. Then once you've done that you can share your freedom with your son, your wife, and others.
Word choice is really important early on because it sets the tone for your quit. It starts to become the way you think as your brain re-wires itself as nicotine-free. Dareisay it almost is like inception? It can come to define almost everything about you.
Syntax aside get involved in the site, get to know people here in your group or that interest you. Post a bunch right away; the distraction of posting and learning the site will help. As a fellow addict I quit with you today. Let's go about fighting for our freedom together!
-
Good for you man. Way to post up roll you badd ass! We welcome you to August Mike.
All the advice given to you below is exceptional. Just remember your roll post is that you give us your word not to use nicotine in any form, so keep your word and do it one day at a time. Posting roll is an insurance policy for your quit as once you post roll you have no choice but to remain nic free for the day. I have sent you my number in a PM feel free to use it any time! Reach out to others in August. Proud to be quit with you Mike!

Thank you for the words of advice and encouragement fellas. Quitting is definitely for me, I suppose I should have worded things differently. My son gives me the extra motivation to quit. I'm 40 and this is our first child so he's a special guy to me. I want to see him graduate school and hopefully hold my grandchildren before I die. That drives me like nothing else to not jump in the car and go buy a tin.
I want to stay quit for myself, and I feel blessed I have such a powerful motivator to help me get through the rough days. I'm very glad my wife showed me this site, the amount of support and outreach is amazing. Thank you all again.

Hey Mike... I know you're struggling with some things. I suggest you journal them out here so you get support from everyone, not just those posting in August. Plus, it's great to have a journal you can look back at. Quit on man, you're doing great!
-
Thanks LHG I can do that, I suppose it would be easier to read than sorting through the quit rolls :)
-
Mraugh,, good job on your quit and welcome. It looks like your holding strong. It gets better and better man. Your in the heart of the fight right now. A little advice I like to give is read everything you can on nicotine if you haven't yet. Learn your enemy well. The better you know this enemy the easier the fight will be. One day at a time and you got this brother. Give me a PM if you need anything.
-
Mraugh welcome,
It sounds to me like you are on the right track... you have been given good advice and support. The bad asses here are right it has to be done for you, you own your quit. For me like others here once I admitted to myself that I am an addict the desire and drive to keep quit increased. Yep you like me are an addict the difference between us and crack whores is legality of our substances.
It is good to your spouse for support...she may want to read the spouses section of the site. Keep her in the loop that will help provide another layer of accoutability.
PM me if you need anything.

So far so good today, haven't really thought about a dip, had a good workout this morning and the air is pretty clean smelling. I live in Colorado and we are having a lot of forest fires right now, the smoke has been pretty bad in the evenings when the winds shift, enough that it looks yellow outside from the light reflecting and visibility is less then a couple miles. That smoke triggers a crave, memories of sitting around a campfire and having a big ol dip in. Sucks, but what are you gonna do except suck it up and drive on with quitting! Thanks for the support folks, it's appreciated.

You know what's greater than sitting around a fire with a lipper in brother? Sitting around a fire without one. Try it out. Your going to find out in time that putting poison in your lip was useless and good for nothing. All the good times are better without the poison. My worst day without a dip is better than my best day with one. I quit with you.

So today is day 41 for me, feels good, but I'm looking forward to day 400 and day 4000, one day at a time, every day quitting. I feel I've been fairly fortunate as that the cravings haven't been really bad for me this time around and the 3 days of hell were pretty manageable initially. I wonder what trap nicotine has lying in store for me for days 50, 70, and 120. I've been reading here of course and have seen people have problems on those days with cravings. I've got to remain vigilant and not cave. Fuck that, myself and my family are too important to cave.
I quit with you one day at a time.

Day 41 is a good day to be quit my friend. Day 42 will get here soon enough, just worry about today. I can't say when and even if you will have any difficulties. Just take it one day at a time and enjoy your freedom. You are having some good days right now, enjoy them, stay vigilant and don't let your guard down. NAFAR and ODAAT.

Looking forward to it! My family and I have yet another major life event coming up soon. We're moving to England for up to 10 years between August and September. My wife and I have both lived overseas before we were married but this move will be as a family. No shooting for me 'bang head' which is something I really enjoy doing. The benefit is that the dip monkey shouldn't be as accessible except at the shoppette on base. I will get over this hurdle and stay quit!

So 60s days of quit have come and gone. Cravings and triggers are much easier to deal with now. I ordered 12 cans of hooch a couple weeks ago for an emergency stash. I've only used 3 cans so far. Some days I don't need a dip of hooch and that is a small triumph. I decided to tackle my diet also, fuck, if I can make nicotine my bitch I can do this with weight loss too. Staying quit has motivated me and my diet is working, no matter how sick and tired I am of vegetables lol.
Thanks all, yet another step on the road to a life of good health and freedom from the beast. August quitters, I'm quit with ya!

Thanks man, so am I. That fishing tournament I was telling you about that we missed due to the weather? They held it last weekend and my buddies took 1st prize with a 30lb mahi. Hopefully next time I'll get to go haha.

Busy busy busy, 88 days so far. Our household goods get moved next week and my son and I board a plane for PA on the 21st. Stress has been a constant companion. Even worse for my wife since shes leaving for England on the 25th and we wont see her until October when we fly over. Still not gonna cave. I look forward to posting and it will suck when I'm not able too. No internet at my folks place and getting rid of my phone. I'll have to spend some time in the leper colony to make up for that. I look forward to posting roll from OCONUS though haha. Guess we'll have to start an international section for killthecan. I remember bumming a dip from some swedes in Bosnia, shit tasted like alum it was soo bitter. Nothing like American dip. Stay quit my friends, that shit is everywhere!

Howdy from Jolly old England. I have been quit ever since moving here, despite having access to dip on the military bases. Fortunately it's rationed so I never got a ration card. Made it easier to not deal with it. Every great once in a while I get a craving for dip, I just substitute some candy or sunflower seeds. I hope everyone is doing well and I follow the killthecan facebook page.
Stay quit folks!
901 days free as of today.
